I've been teaching English for 25+ years and I read this book when it came out (in fact, I heard Michael Lewis speak at a TESOL conference, bought the book, and asked him for his autograph). I don't follow everything that he says to the letter (as you mentioned, he can get a bit dogmatic), but the ideas of PERFECT being "looking before" and the CONTINUOUS as "temporary/takes time" have stuck with my teaching all of these years. I also teach the simple tenses (past and present) as FACT to help students do away with those arbitrary lists.
I will look into the other book you mentioned- I'm curious! Another activity that is part of my toolbox is x-word grammar. Have you heard of it? I'm not an expert, and don't profess to use it as intensely as those who follow it to the letter, however my students find that x-word grammar simplifies a lot of grammar for them. I have created a sort of mix between x-word grammar and the English Verb.
I really appreciate your videos. I'm actually going back and rereading these books and also looking to see if there is any current science/methods around- a sort of self professional development. I do this every few years and I was delighted to have come across your page. I know this video was shot 5 years ago. Who are you reading now?
    Thank you for your work.

Hey, thanks for the kind words. I regret to say recently my professional development reading has been undergoing a slump. I go through periods where I'm very motivated to do professional development reading, and then periods where I'm not so motivated. (Perhaps similar to your "every few years" approach".) I'm currently reading The Grammar book by Marianne Celce-Murcia and Diane Larsen Freeman. But I've been making such slow progress on it.
I don't think I've ever heard of X-word grammar. I googled it just now, and it doesn't look like anything I regularly do in the classroom. But maybe I should check it out.
