I’m from London and I once did a job on a council estate near Birmingham. I couldn’t understand them and they couldn’t understand me. It was embarrassing.
That's quite relieving and comforting to read 😄😄. If you who's English had a hard time there, it's ok that Liverpool's and Black Country's accents sound unintelligible for me
Don't make me laugh, Iam from Africa but I can understand English from any person, no matter the country where you come from, I use to interpret people of different countries when they come in our church for the service
Had a few comments asking about 'The Black Country.' The Black Country is an area of England, in the middle. It covers a collection of towns and boroughs near to Birmingham. It is called the Black Country because of its industrial history, where the many factories and foundries would create a lot of smoke in the area.
The UK not only has regional accents, but also has economic class accents. A British woman in my country returned to the UK and back after 5 years away and told me that she didn't realize the class separation was so great in the UK until she returned after 5 years. We really don't have such class separation, so it really would stand out comparing the two countries.
Yes indeed, and that distinction is more acute if someone from the lower socio strata ends up on the wrong side of the law. Uk is seemingly amiable on a brief visit, but if you find yourself adjusting to its elitest and hierarchal culture, it morphs a hostile existence unless you share a higher membership.. Truly horrendous, lovely country, but there are reasons why so many Brits leave seeking a more equal and less exclusive climate..
To be honest I m still struggling delving in to the accents , after many years of learning English. As a Dutchman , Rhotic accent helps for me , really spells it out. You are a great teacher Laura, and I love this gem of a video , you nailed it. Overwhelming quality, and all these tips are amazing and work for me .
Laura, Oh my goodness, you are amazing, ive just moved to the uk. I never understood the different accents easily, you made it a lot easier for me, you are absolutely amazing
As a German I found the *Shetland* series relatively easy to understand. Some Scotts told me there are phonetic similarities which makes it easier both ways.
Im german too and I found out, that it depends from the region in Germany. In Bavaria, espascially in Oktoberfest-County😅, where I grew up, we have a strong rhotic accent.
I don't know Shetland so I don't know the local accent. But there's no dialect in the series. In a lot of these series, they just stick the occasional word in to make it sound "dialecty". I had the same experience with Montalbano, set in Sicily. "This I'd easy", I thought. When I went to get my hair cut in a small town in Sicily on holiday, I was trying to understand what the other customers were saying. Not a word! The BBC makes a lot of money from exports!
Amazing! My students complained today about not understanding British people and I gave them your video to watch. Thank you so much for your work. I recommend your channel to everyone
I’m English (born in Kent, raised in Devon, lived in south wales and Worcestershire in the past, currently live in Lincolnshire) but I still struggle with some accents from some individual people. Even a really broad Devonian accent! I used to teach on the edge of Dartmoor and would often see an old man in the morning. I never understood a single word he said!
Believe me, some accents like the highlighted Scouse sound like static radio on phets. Some others though, the Northumberland accent are absolutely beautiful.
Even as a native UK English speaker, mostly northern RP but can naturally slip into the Yorkshire accent, these videos are so entertaining. It's unbelievable how many different accents they are here. There's a distinct difference between a Derby and Nottingham accent and yet they are 20km/13 miles away.
Amazing video, a million thanks. As a catalan from Spain I tend to forget that every language has this great variety of accents. And the way you teach this is super professional, thank you thank you thank you.

After years studying English, I now understand why I had a lot of difficulties understanding peoples in Liverpool ! I felt like if it was another language
Liverpool is an extremely multicultural city. Many have Welsh ancestry, Chinese, Scandinavian, Scottish, Irish, Caribbean. On top of that our city centre has many international students and a diverse group of new immigrants - especially from Sudan, Somalia, Turkey, Afghanistan etc. My neighbours are Chinese, German, Welsh, Norwegian and Nigerian here in the city centre. I'm not sure who you weren't understanding 😂? Definitely the Liverpudlian accent on TV shows is tricky to understand though - because a lot of the time it is made up haha!
