I’m sure someone has mentioned it but the ECU was taken because it was probably bench unlocked. On the G80-82 the ecu needs to be sent out (to Europe I believe) so the old owner is likely planning on putting it into their new insurance replacement.
That's exactly what happen, Cost to much money to unlock the ECU
Just call the first owner, and ask him about the ECU, simple as that.

Its not easy to find a previous owner when you buy car from auction, because usually it’s the insurance company that sells the vehicle and not the owner.

I found my salvage owners info in the car stereo. It had his phone book programmed. I said, call home... I was able to get extra keys, owners manual etc....

That ecu is going to be more headache then the actual rebuild with all the coding needed keys,bcm tcm etc
If you decide to repaint you should do another individual color!

A Mishimoto oil cooler is going to be way stronger than OEM. They make a skid plate too that protects the cooler from damage. Also, the reason the original owner likely kept the ECU is because you have to send the ECU out of the country to get it unlocked before you can tune it. That process is expensive and takes a good amount of time.

Even if it was tuned would be worried about extreme engine damage. Not good no ecu usually means the original engine most likely blew up and they put a junk engine inside the car here is what you need to do.
1. Check the engine mounts
2. Check the bolts around the transmission

Too many rebuild channels driving the prices sky high. Not even worth it except for content.
@Nedinho23 yea, most my personal cars have been from auctions, right now I'm looking for a upgrade replacement, gotta say price have went down from a year ago, still very high for a salvage.. definitely having to dig deeper and be more patient on trying to get a car

Such a dumb looking car. BMW seriously took a nosedive design-wise. And it's not just the goofy grill, a BMW without the Hofmeister kink is not a BMW.

This is going to be a great build! As far as the ECU, any chance it was on the backseat floor boards or the trunk??? I’m sure you looked, but just checking. It’s an exciting build but it’s a real bummer that someone would have taken that out. I don’t know what all is involved in a tune. Ben I hope you and your family had a great Christmas. The old owner probably kept the ECU, I’m guessing it was unlocked and they might use it for another M4 or sell it… it takes a while to unlock the G8x ECU and one of the only options is sending it to Finland which takes time and isn’t cheap

If you crash a car and unbolt the ecu, It's probably to take it out keep it. Not much reason to unbolt it like you're trying to fix something.
Unless... Does BMW do some kind of disabler with the Gauge cluster. like VW does? Maybe it? Wouldn't be worth anything without the Gauges to match it? But then maybe they don't know this or maybe they can program around it.

The big problem with buying cars at auction is that "selling as is" does not mean being in perfect condition since it arrived at the yard to be put up for sale. Between the event location and where the car is located, things can happen along the way. So much so that the car came without keys, without ECU, which justified the "attractive" price. I won't stay if someone shows up wanting to sell something on eBay. Maybe it's even the former owner of the car.

Hope originals owner did not get an insurance payout, would be voided with that much non spec. parts on board. In fact one expects if disclosed on the statement of fact pre-cover the premium would effectively make that owners car uninsurable.
I hope that you can move forward with this built. The $ signs are adding up pretty fast & if you can resale it to make decent profit once you had some fun with it. Maybe the paint job is something to rethink about because of the satin finish.

Bro hell no. BMW are overly complicated. Good luck with this build because it’s going to be a lengthy one.
Did a quick search on ECUs and they are about 750-2000 so its not too bad but its a price.
Looking forward to the end result on this build! The frozen paint is a bit of a pain, get a good ceramic coating on it as soon as you can and it will help with stains. As for the DME (ECU), assuming the previous owner is getting a replacement M4, they could have had a JB4 installed in the wrecked one and wanted to take the next step in the replacement car and snatched the DME out to send to FEMTO for unlock. The DME unlock is an expensive and time consuming process, so having a backup DME is not a bad idea. I hope you can find a used one, my understanding is that it is expensive to replace. Good luck!

@@tnolan3176Agreed, when he’s taking the front apart there are a million little plastic pieces that you just don’t see on something like a Mustang. It’s like they go out their way to make them complicated.
Damn that sucks with the ecu but this build will be great when it’s done just keep pushing through and look at the bright side

He was most likely running a Femto unlocked ECU, and he pulled it to sell, or to use on his replacement G8X. There's still currently no one in the states that's able to unlock these ECU's, so you gotta pay $1-2k to ship them out for unlocking, plus whatever you pay for the tune on top. Lots of G8X guys also need and want backup ECU's, so they don't mess with their stock ones. Anyway, wish you luck and excited to watch this build. 🤙

2020+ bmw ecu is locked from factory. if you unlock it bmw will know when its taken in for service. you can get another ecu unlock it and clone it and then tune it. if you go to the dealership you just swap ecu to keep waranty. good luck with the build.

I owned a g80 and I’m an estimator at a BMW certified collision repair shop in Nashville. I’m telling you know this is just going to get more expensive and the strut tower is cast aluminum. If cracked you can’t really fix it right we have to replace a lot of them. Not trying to rain on your day but wishing you good luck and hope you make best decisions.
This will be interesting Ben. Looks like an easy guess on how the accident happened. Someone caught the rear quarter and pushed it into oncoming traffic???

I like the way you work on your projects. I think this car was tuned and so the owner can use it in his next car, maybe it is that the insurance company did not see tuning.

Maybe the previous owner didn’t want the insurance to know there was a tune on the car because he was scared he wouldn’t get any insurance money? That’s the only thing making sense to me why that ecu is missing.
The only problem with that is don’t you think the insurance company would automatically think it was tuned if the ecu is missing?

I do agree with u to some extent,the goonies do waste a lot of money which I dilike.,but as far as their promo sauces ,watches etc is concerned,u have to understand that almost all You- tubers rely on their content as a source of income,and I think its unfair of u to limit people to only videos,making all this content takes money,so they look to other sources to boost their cash flow.If u dnt like it then dnt watch them,but dnt break ppl down.
