I feel like Andy's GM style is gonna train the ox crew on how to plan/function in a world without impenetrable plot armor and I'm here for it!
It's definitely gonna teach them to not overuse duels, at least.
I really like how tightly Deadlands plays compared to how they play D&D and how Blades in the Dark works. I absolutely love their Blades in the Dark series. That said, I like how little leeway Andy gives them in Deadlands. I like that he didn't make it easy to kill Bellows.
Andy's DMing is great. Especially when he guides Jane and Luke to do the duel rather than try to find silly ways to subvert the situation, much like Prudence and Dob would do.
@@waycooljrplays Yeah, actually... It never really feels like Andy is on the back foot or improvising a way to rerail the session. I mean I'm pretty sure he did that once or twice, but it doesn't feel like it, and that's even better!
@@mar_speedman I agree. I wonder how long he's been GMing for.
I’m sorry I’m picturing a 13 year old going “I believe it’s noon” like a total psychopath and I’m laughing so hard.
Yeah, ever read Blood Meridian by that I mean the one by Cormac Mccarthy?
@@BlackMoonHowlsupdate I’ve read it now and holy shit
I like to think that all their costumes just came out of Andy's closet.
It's highly likely.
I like this theory cause it means since the oxventurers are all different heights Andy bought these costumes for them and just had them ready
@@causewhynot6485 It's kinda like how Batman has a contingency plan for all the members of the JL. Andy has contingency costumes for each member of the Oxboxtra crew.
@@Derixyleth Oh I _100%_ believe that
Especially Ellen‘s. 😂
They way Andy says "Oh right Johnny died." just has me laughing
I didn’t see the end of episode 2 so it was even better for me
@@Pizzaetertje you absolute madman...
I absolutely CANNOT BELIEVE that draw in the last round!!! The storytelling! The drama! FANTASTIC episode!
The only card you need is the ace of spades.
Bless Andy for realising Luke and Jane were never going to work out how the shooting was rigged and just straight up having Ned confess it without prompting. 🤣 Brilliant Marshalling!
I really wanna know what Andy had rigged up what the cheat was.🤣
@nowhereman6360 I figured Bellowes had access to a synchronized timepiece, or anything that let him know the time to the second, and that the kid on the train sounded the whistle at 4 seconds before the hour and Bellowes was drawing on, say, 4.5 seconds before. Even if he was just prepared to draw exactly as the whistle blew, it would still be a split second sooner than his opponent, who'd have to process that the whistle was happening before they could move to draw.
@@banditbanzai3197 Nope. Cheating with a time piece completely wastes the '4 seconds early advantage'
I mean what's the point if he just checks a watch? No, the kid pulls the whistle 4 seconds early because sound takes time to travel. 4 seconds from the train to the duel grounds. 4 seconds where bellows can see the boy pull the whistle before anyone can actually hear the whistle
@@mar_speedman Sir, this is an interesting theory, but that would mean the whistle would be 1372 m away from the dueling street. IMHO that this was just Andy nicely improvising on the spot and giving players what they were looking for without further thinking about it. I believe in the earlier episode it is mentioned, that the whistle is sounded by a passing train, not by a train standing in the town all day.
@@anthonyjackob7192 Well yeah. Basically the theory might crack under pressure when you apply actual math, but then again Andy didn't apply any math either. This is just the most likely use of a 4 second delay.
Anyway it's not really a big deal since Andy kinda implied the whistle itself blows late. I thought it was just physics and sound traveling slowly, but maybe it really is a case of the whistle blowing less instantaneously then it should (how they managed that, I have no idea)
Luke's luck with shooting is quickly shaping up to make a 13 year old kid the most feared gunman in the west
Billacey the kid
@@xanderwarwick9973 inspiration!
He shot the Waco Kid in the ass
Nate really took the communal brain cell with him when he died 😅
So GMing for these folks is not just like herding cats, it's herding all orange cats?
@@octochancan confirm. My orange cat is just..... special compared to the others. Bless her heart.
@@octochanr/oneorangebraincell is leaking 😜
I was genuinely thinking this was some kind of power play by Johnny. Like: "Let's see how the oxventure does without me."
@@chuiduma Yep, I've got 2 orange boys. One has always been pretty smart; he's a cranky old man kitty at 15 years old now. The orange boy is now 3 and he's an idiot most of the time. He can be so sweet, but he really isn't the brightest cat.
Man Luke made it so dramatic with the Ace reveal during the duel. Loved it!
That was intense as hell.
His acting shocked and worried at Bellows' King, but then having the only card type that could beat it (and that card type being the Ace of Spades specifically..?)... it felt cinematic as all heck, but I wonder if there might be a bit of fixing going on there to give us the most satisfying story? It feels like too much coincidence at once
So after rewatching Part I with hindsight in mind, I’ve come to the theory that not only is Nate Harrowed (evidence: his complete nonchalance in the face of certain death and telling Delacy he’ll be back shortly, his wife dying “some time ago” and the number of hindrance cards Johnny seems to have-a side effect of being a Harrowed from what I understand) but that Bellowes is as well. There’s just a lot of foreshadowing: The name of the town being Dead Man’s Worth, the fact that Victoria has hired bounty hunters who claimed to have killed Bellowes only to have “him come back weeks later”(could it be something supernatural rather than her being scammed?) and the cagey way some of the locals like the innkeeper act about the nature of the tournament, like they know it’s rigged since he can’t die unless they shoot him in the head, so he can keep taking people’s money without fear of dying.
Beyond just Bellowes, I’m almost thinking we’ve run across a town of Harrowed. The way the innkeeper got shot 7 times and still lives, and tells the story about how Bellowes “shot everyone” (and doesn’t clarify their fates) when he came to town makes me wonder if it could be more than Bellowes that’s undead as well. Also the way he was talking about being alive being the only thing that matters felt significant and creepy as hell. I don’t know enough about the mechanics of the Harrowed to know if you can purposely turn other humans into Harrowed if you’re one yourself but damn that would be a cool twist if Bellowes could do so.
I think Andy’s got a knack for foreshadowing so I really hope it pays off next week. I would not be surprised if he set up a Harrowed heavy arc to begin the series and that’s why Nate and Bellowes were pinned against each other first round.
Makes sense; Johnny is the perfect person to design a character that way. I can imagine that being a pre-game collaboration with Andy to help set up the idea that no one is safe.
I hope you're right, cause this would be sick. I'm not all that familiar with the settings and the rules of Deadlands or Harrows but while watching the last episode, it was obvious to me that Andy and Johnny somewhat planned that (or at least, neither were going out of their way to avoid Nate's death). I figure there might be some zombie-esque stuff about to go down.
@@neldee7279 I definitely may be overthinking it, but I think a Harrowed heavy plot would be a great way to start the bounty hunts! Really sets the stage for the spooky side of Deadlands.
I mean, if that's not what's going to happen, I hope you can reuse this setting for your own campaigns! Sounds awesome
Oh god damnit Nate has to be and probably has been for some time...HIS BINDLE IS A SHOVEL! He probably has to dig himself out from time to time 😂😂😂😂
Am I the only one who thought it would be funny if Johnny came back to play Harrowed Nate only to find out Garnet and Delacy exploded his corpse? lol
I am honestly surprised, that Delacy's parents are still alive! I was convinced he was some kind of orphan! 😅
Right?
And potentially self-inflicted orphanism, at that. 🤣
Luke and orphans don't mix well. Better for Delacy to have a big, ol' family back in 700miles east at the red house
it's so much more interesting for this type of character to still have parents, and parents that he loves. i really like it
Yeah, that surprised me as well. Mainly because, what parents are letting their child run away to become a bounty hunter?
Andy doing a double take at Delacy just killing the one dude who might have been convinced to help them against Bellows is such a funny moment. Honestly, as much as Slim was built up as being a skilled, no-shits-given gunfighter who had no fear of death, I kinda hoped they'd try to convince him to throw the match and then join them in the shootout.
Lol, Jane and Luke making cannibalism jokes about Nate's body is exactly what Johnny would've wanted
It’s an Oxventure tradition…
This is a fantastic series. Also enjoyed Jane's relatable description "you know when you put a cigarette out on someone's flesh?"
We've all done it.
The acting from Luke in this episode is incredible. And Garnet is shaping up to be my favourite Jane character!
Forget lilliana forget vocatus and all of blades in the dark, I've never been more nervous watching oxventure ttrpgs than that last duel. My watch actually gave me a resting heart rate high notification when Andy flipped that king around.
And there you have it, Nate had beaten Jesus’ respawn time.
Damn speedrunners can't leave anything alone.
May I just say that Andy's acting as Bellows was legit scary, also, can someone explain the 4 seconds thing on the train whistle???
I think it was a red herring…
My take was that in the rules of the tournament the train whistle is sounded on the hour. So if contestants have a timepiece they'd know when exactly when the whistle would be sounded but since it was off by 4 seconds they'd be thrown off and only Bellows would have the advantage. (He was mentioned to have a pocket watch)
I believe the idea was that Bellows had a pocketwatch and was counting down the seconds, so that he would react faster. Andy realized that it was too hard to understand and let them take away the advantage by trading places even though it didn't make any sense.
light is faster than sound (340m/s) so he would see the whistle being triggered several seconds before the sound reached him. it's the same as seeing lightning and counting how many seconds it takes to hear the thunder, to determine the distance of a storm. it's also why snipers use supersonic ammunition. the bullet reaches the target before the sound of the rifle.
he sees the operator pull the rope (or likely the blast of steam itself) then counts to four, and draws simultaneously as the sound from the whistle reaches everyone. his opponent needs to hear the whistle before they can begin reacting to it, and those few fractions of a second are more than enough to give him a significant advantage.
They missed a very funny opportunity where a man with a hole in his chest was successfully shot but no damage was done, should have said the bullet went through the existing hole.
I thought for sure they were gunna say that.
This episode felt like Andy had to suffer through Jane and Luke creating their own red herrings and convoluted plans. I just think back to the episode of Oxventure D&D, where Johnny had to deal with the group following the furniture delivery.
And as much as I am happy for the sponsorship and like how the dice sound, they honestly must be quite horrible to read at a glance, considering how often the crew has to take a moment to figure out the number or raise it to their eyes.
Overall, another great episode and now I have to wait for next week.
Yea, some fancy dice sometimes do the dicey part kinda poorly 😅 I checked out the dice and there are a lot of fancy decorations on the faces along with the number (which is also not a standard font) so it's no wonder they're kind of hard to read. I personally prefer clear and elegant dice rather than overdesigned ones.
To quote Andy in *Bad Chair Day*, "Chair."
I feel like Luke and Jane's planning was so chaotic Andy had to stop it.
@@backonlazer791 I completely agree. While I am quite a bit of a dice goblin myself and love dice that are aesthetically pleasing, function comes first. If I can’t read them at a glance, they mostly turn into decorative pieces, instead of getting used for their intended purpose.
My first set of dice that was hard to read, were the Endless Dice by Sam Zhao. They looked great on the Kickstarter page, but in person are not that nice to read. I had to paint them to get a good contrast between the numbers and the knot design.
@@bugwandis It was especially strange considering the challenge was tailor made for Delacy and Garnet. Delacy great at shooting and Garnet able to buff and debuff or even damage with hexes.
Andy most likely planned to have this great showdown (which at the end we got, after all those other things), but Jane and Luke went “Nah, that’s too simple.”
As I said, I still love the episode, but I feel for Andy. The final shootout with the goons was most likely intended to be longer, but due to all that happened before, was cut a bit shorter. At least that is what happens during some of my campaign, if the players go completely off the rails.
Johnny was so eager to sign up for the gunfight against the professional gunman, and didn't seem fazed about it, so I had figured he was going to be some kind of person who can't die, but when he died at the end of the last episode I was shocked.
Then he just shows up at the end of this one, well played Gents
"Does he hit the bird?" 'Yes'
And it seems Andy's war on avian life forms extends beyond Corazón.
Is it evolution of devolution when the chicken kicker becomes a bird shooter? 😂
@@dee... Well he didn't impale any albatrosses this time...
I am loving the Deadlands mechanics so far. It's so intense to watch, much more than DnD or BitD. Watching Delacy and Bellows' duel had me on the edge of my seat. Also Andy is clearly having the time of his life as a Marshal, and his voice for Bellows was so good, I almost regret that he's dead. But Nate took him out in an extremely cool way lol.
That pokerface on his face was just 👌
Them completely overthinking the way Bellows was cheating is both painful and hilarious.
well the 4 secods are kinda confusing if "look at the guy giving the signal" is possibly everything he needs?
@lauramarschmallow2922 I'm assuming that they were right and bellows was watching Ned's arm and the whistle was on a four second delay.
I think all the advantage he needed was seeing the guy start to pull the whistle.
I absolutely love andy's NPCs. Slim was an extraordinary character concept, almost sad he got throated by Delacy
This has a terrifying level of suspense every episode. Andy is doing such a good job GMing this.

I would love to hear Andy explain if or what bellows advantage was. Maybe on the podcast. I'd be super interested in finding out
I think Luke got it right off the bat when he said Bellows just watches the whistleman's arm, but he and Jane weren't convinced it could be that simple so they started spiraling

True that🤠
I love Andy's accents. His big bad is just the right measure of intimidating calmness.
Watching Jane and Luke trying to solve the mystery of Below's dueling success is so fun. So rarely have these games challenged the players mentally or mechanically but losing a member really gives weight and consequence to their actions.
Amazingly done Andy. My favourite oxventure yet.
Edit: Oh, well, snaps.
The wait for next week is going to be absolutely painful but oh my gods it was so good
He might come back hopefully... Maybe.
These are quickly becoming some of my favourite Oxventure characters, and the fact there are actual stakes, with a character death (sort of), makes me all the more protective of them.
Delacy is a terrifying sweet summer child.
Nate is an old, now undead, slightly wise man.
Garnet is a gambling witch, with all the style that comes with.
And honestly, Delacy's growing friendship with Nate is just heart-warming.
It'll be fun to see how Edith and Silas react to the weirdness of this west.
25 minutes in, and Andy runs in to the classic TTRPG problem all DMs face: The players have asked for the name of an NPC you didn't prepare.
We used to meet a lot of people called "Aman" or "Ofuk", as I recall.
Video starts at roughly 00:00 according to my sundial
I say this with the utmost respect, but can we just appreciate how Andy looks especially good as a cowboy? Hot daaang! 🔥
Very much digging Andy as a bad guy. I kind of wish Bellows had more screen time. I don't know how I can be creeped out and attracted to a character all at once but there ya go! 🤷🏻😅
Can't wait to see the next baddies he plays.
That ending...
Crazy right out of nowhere blam, dead and I thought they were invincible like in most table tops🙃

Whoever did the sound work on this, fantastic job! The music swell as Delacy faces Bellows, just perfect
I audibly screamed a few times during this episode because of the pure drama. I am in love with this series.
Another amazing episode. I am loving Deadlands so much! Andy is marshalling the game magnificently.
That was great. Loved every second of this episode. Andy has been doing such a great job at GMing. There were so many great moments with Delacy and Garnet. And Nate! Absolutely wild! I am really loving this series soo much. Can't wait to see what happens next.
PS: Andy, I have to say Bellows' voice made my skin crawl but I still loved it too. Sooo creepy! Good job!
Now, how to keep it spoiler-free... it was tense at times, at one point chat just exploded, and I ended up happy and waiting for some explanation in the next episode:)
Also, Andy as a GM rules, and his portrayal of Bellows was brilliant! That voice kept me anxious with every line!
My Word, the Outlook on these Microsoft office puns...
Delacy's gonna be out for blood...
As opposed to his usual state, "out for slightly less blood".
@@patrickphelan279He's up for blood ever
thats because hes nearly out of his own blood
I think this might be the episode Andy mentioned on the Podcast where he changed the solution to a puzzle to match what the players had guessed (because they were too far off the planned solution).
I wonder if the train whistle timing was made up on the fly? My suspicion is that maybe it was originally something to do with the statue? The bartender mentions it took quite a while to make. Could it have, say, a secret compartment inside with a hidden gunman? If Bellows always has his back to the statue, then a hidden gunman would have a sight on the other dualist...
(Or I could be waaay overcomplicating it 😂)
Interesting thought. I wonder.

Mötorhead _immediately_ came to mind seeing that.
I hope Johnny watched this episode back, saw the look on Andy’s face while Jane and Luke struggled to parse the train whistle and waffled about shadows and sun dials, and felt cold satisfaction in their heart as they remembered how much time Oxventure wasted in Bad Chair Day being undercover cats and furniture on that bloody ship. 😂
The sundial shenanigans has me laughing so hard, what an absolute crazy episode, very much excited to see what chaos Mike and Ellen get up to next episode...

Andy! What a Marshall. You all have done it again! Deadlands is the absolute bees knees and these characters are amazing.
Beans!
1:23:51 Andy spells out what the point of the whistle advantage was, for those who got stuck in the same trap as Luke and Jane. The four seconds bit is irrelevant, for example:
A person has seven apples and eight cookies on a green plate, and eats three of apples. How many cookies are remaining?
In this analogy, the four seconds early information is equivalent to the number of apples eaten. The answer is connected to the irrelevant information by the “plate” of this analogy, which is the boy who pulls the whistle.
Edit for further clarification: if the guy is visible enough to make out his arm movements (which Andy explicitly states to be the case), then he is too close for the sound of the train whistle to take 4 seconds. Additionally, Andy through Ned says that there is no delay between pulling the whistle and the sound coming out (likely because the whistle does its buildup before it’s time to pull the whistle).
Oh thank goodness, you can rewind a premiering video. I thought I was going to have to wait until it finished to start watching from the beginning.
A lucky joker pull could otherwise bring a gnarley twist of fate. If not then weird scientists are heaps of fun to play and provide lots of opportunity for eccentric characters.
I love the idea of Weird Scientists(though I personally think of them by their original name of Mad Scientists) myself. Running along that Bleeding Edge of 1800's Science with a combination of Brilliance and Supernaturally Influenced Madness....
Congratulations Marshall Andy on creating a perfectly despicable villain for this adventure. Well done!
28:13 we are officially in "bad chair day" territory.

Daaaaamn! So good. One thing I enjoy about Savage Worlds (Deadlands platform) is how things can go from "Oh god oh god, we're all gonna die." to "We are gods and you will explode before us!" with just a couple of rolls XD
I've never been more crestfallen as a GM than when a player one shot my big awesome boss of the scene (that had been chasing down the players through the area until the final confrontation) almost immediately because he ended up with an absurd amount of raises on a damage roll and I literally could not soak enough to keep the boss from getting slaughtered. They were having a grand ol' time with that tho, so I guess it was all good.
... perishable kind of jerky!
... ?
Yeah, sounds like a great invention... 😆
I’m guessing that Andy mentioning that the Main Street curves uphill toward Bellows’ house is the advantage Delacey takes away from Bellows. Don’t have to raise/draw your gun as high when your opponent is at a lower grade/incline than you.
"You don't see any improvised sundials" killed me good 💀
This 2 parter was so much fun.
He is alive!! I knew Nate would rise again. Is it really him though...
Garnet with the magic wrecking shit. Scary.
Ben Bellows was one tough hombre. And creepy.
And as usual Delacy is a scary and chaotic and funny. His voice is the best.
Barely Beheaded Bellows? Also I need to play this game. You are all amazing people and entertainers!! Thanks for all you do
Holy smokes the Tension! Luke, marvellous performance! Not to spoil but the shoot-offs are so nerve-wrecking, I love it!
“Edwin Carbine”, “G. Atling”, and “Gregory Uzi” were kinda real people.
David “Carbine” Williams was a convicted murderer and one of the lead designers for the M1 Carbine. He developed a short stroke gas piston and free floating chambers, both using the propellant gasses to cycle a firearm action.
Richard Gatling was an inventor from North Carolina, along side his gun, he worked on new farming equipment. The Gatling system is still in use, mostly in aircraft like fighter jets and helicopter door guns.
Uziel “Uzi” Gal was a firearms designer, with him designing the Ruger MP9 in the 80’s as an improvement on his original submachine gun from 1954.
This series is AMAZING so far! Andy is doing great and I love how he’s ratcheted up the difficulty/tension

i imagine richard brake every time bellows speaks or does anything.
edit: i actually screamed during that duel omg
not understanding how he was cheating was both extremely painful and entertaining
I think what it was is that sound travels slower than light, so even though the sound of the whistle played instantaneously for the boy, it would be delayed for the duel. Bellows would be able to see the kid pull on the string before anyone hears the whistle.
Not sure how someone from the era would know or explain that, though. It would be really painful for me in their shoes because I'd know exactly what's going on but be unable to express it without metagaming
I still don't really get that, maybe because I was listening while doing something else. Mind explaining?
@@dominateeye All we really know is that Bellows sees the kid who pulls the train whistle from where he is. And that he told the kid to play the whistle 4 seconds early. Under pressure, the kid kinda implied that the train whistle works on a delay, but sorta backtracks and it's not clear how it's on a delay
Either it's just physics, or they somehow got the thing to work on a delay, but I think basically the trick is that the kid pulls the whistle, and then everyone hears it. Bellows sees the boy pull the whistle before anyone hears it
I think it's physics. Sounds travels slower than light, and from their distance, they'd probably have heard the whistle at a delay
@@mar_speedman its reasonably common knowledge throughout much of history, definitely in this period, its not particularly hard to figure out given if you can see/hear the delay of anything moderately far away, anything below .1 seconds difference your brain will just merge, but beyond that its noticed. Not to mention the experiencing or even knowing that echoes exist lol. Seeing the kid was part of it, the other part is the specific timing. Bellows could look at his own or anyone else's time piece, maybe even people specifically put in place for this purpose, either glancing as it counted down or looking prior and then counting down on his own, we know this from the uncanny slipup of the boy at the specific time and then recourse, and when Andy says they took away one of his advantages not just his advantages.
@@imdadirtydan Bellows could've had advantages for being a skilled draw. Also, he *has* done this before, like Jane guessed once. The timing is probably ingrained in him, so that could count as another advantage (I would've made the boy play the noise earlier atop what the crew did to further mess with him)
Anyway I fail to see how the boy pulling the whistle early has anything to do with Bellows knowing the time through a time piece? Those feel like unrelated points to me.
My theory is that his time piece vibrates 1 second before the whistle blows
The statue is the sundial? Or he just watches the kid stop watching his watch and pull the whistle cord
@@nixi7688 I think he just watches as he pulls the whistle cord. I think Bellows told the kid to play the whistle 4 seconds before the time because it's far enough away that the sound that reaches the duel is delayed. So as far as the duelists are concerned, the whistle blows at the exact right time, but the kid pulls the whistle early, and Bellows sees the motion early
I need this sooner after that last ending...
Holy wow! I was holding my breath during that duel. That final card draw is the most suspenseful thing I’ve seen in forever.
This is better than Hollywood!
Well, Chapter 2 was really something...
