- In this tutorial you'll learn how to quickly change your life using Pysop's Cryptomatte instead of object passes.
Special Appearance from Tokyo Megaplex.
Note: If you're using AE, read the comment from Ryan that is pinned below. You can actually click on layers. It isn't quite intuitive.

hey Liam nice vid - FYI it's 'shift+click' on the layer in the viewer in After Effects to pick the colours on the cryptomatte that you want to be a part of your matte - and you can select multiple selections with this method. you don't need to type the object IDs in, that would be ludicrous. unfortunately after effects is very slow when working with crypto matte sequences and I wouldn't recommend it on anything other than a still. I've spoken to the Brendan at Fnordware and he's gone above and beyond to create this plugin for the After Effects users (for free and Open Source!!!!) but it's really going to be up to Adobe to get a decent EXR workflow going in After Effects down the road.
Yeah. I've been talking with a couple people on slack and it has been brought to my attention that you can click on the layers, but you have to have the effect highlighted to be able to do so. There are some other tricks that go along with it to get the other spots filled in too. I think it's awesome that Brendan has done this for free, open source, etc. Adobe really does need to step up here so it can be a lot more intuitive.
Didn't even know you could do that. Very useful!!!
amazing! didnt know cryptomatte existed in AE till now that i googled it. Even exporting cryptomatte selection as jpeg sequence takes a verylong time? cause it would be a great solution once u know ur selections in comp, u dont have to stay procedural.
The updated cryptomatte effect in AE is just left click ( be sure to have effect selected though in the effects panel ).
great and useful tutorial as always!
Awesome. Thanks Liam.
Thanks dude!!!!
Thanks!
thx man! 2 issues over here When I am rendering Multilayer exr out of redshift (containing a cryptomatte and a beauty pass), beauty pass is just black. I used the exr hos split script from reaktor to automatically setup the passes inside Fusion. Any Idea why this is not working? To be honest I dongt know how to setup crypromatte out of a Multipass manual - it just has to many channels
Crypto doesn't do multilayer. It always renders as a separate file. Not sure why the beauty is black.
huuuuuuge monitor!
I don't seem to be able to render a Cryptomatte from Redshift that is working in Fusion. It comes in looking like in the video, but Fusion isn't finding any mattes in the image, and the node itself has a little red dot.
Did you ever solve this? I'm having the same problem... been trying to figure it out for the past 2 hours.
@@MCJamZam I just ran into this problem, and I solved it by using a single frame. But I need sequences, and I'm still figuring that out
Is it possible to get a Cryptomatte as a 16bit PNG? Or it is only available as an EXR?
Ryan Massiah I believe it is only EXR since they hold raw data.
Makes sense. Just wanted to confirm.
hi cryptomatte works in resolves 16?thanks
I’d have to do some real research on it, but from a quick forum read, it looks like it should.
@@ProfessionallyIncorrect yes it works, you need to install Reactor
How did you install into Redshift C4D? I went to github.com/Psyop/Cryptomatte and see nothing for Redshift that gives the custom AOVs.
It comes with Redshift start around 2.6.14 (or approximately there) and up.
Okay now that makes sense. I had downgraded to RS 2.5 for GPU testing. Derp! Upgrading now...
Thanks!
I screamed like a little school girl when Cryptomatte appeared in my AOVs drop down.
Does ANYONE use Cryptomatte in AE for real work? It's so damn slow to playback with 2 objects selected as a matte. At least 3x slower than a regular EXR playing back which is already slow as it is.
Yeah. Cryptomatte in AE is definitely slow.
I had the same observation...I updated my ProEXR to 2.0 and it works a bit faster... still kinda chuggy but substantial improvement over the original plugin/effect. Link:
