It amazes me that I have been using YNAB for seven years and I still learn something new from every budget nerd episode. Kath is awesome and Ben and Ernie will always amaze me 😊 thanks, guys!!
It really resonated with me when Kath was talking about YNAB taking away the mental maths. I am relatively new to using YNAB but I’ve always budgeted. My system ended up looking like some ledger from 100 years ago! (Maybe slight exaggeration) I realised I needed to change when doing my budget was causing me anxiety. YNAB has been great for me, so easy. I’ve just bought a coat for walking which cost nearly £300. I’ve wanted it for ages but could never afford it or justify it. Two months into YNAB and it’s mine! 👏🏻
Somehow YNAB turns the dread of upcoming bills into anticipation! So strange, but glad to hear that, as a recent YNAB devotee, my obsession is par for the course!
The category talks are great! I just started using ynab and seeing how different people use it themselves has helped me round out my true expenses sooner and feel more prepared while im trying to get fully to rule 4. Only a month in and at 22 days AoM.
I’m 2 years away from retirement but just re-did all my categories based on retirement. I did need to do that to see my actual “retirement “ essential expenses, etc.
Mentally, I think I can only do this another couple of years. Realistically, I think I’m another 5 to 7 years out, but I love the idea of creating my retirement budget now and living with those numbers for a while.
❤❤❤❤ I love this!! Kath, thank you so much for sharing, I relate so much to this - I feel like you’re my budget nerd sister! I also use my Ready to Assign in the exact same way - it’s like the cream on top!
This is an excellent episode from someone who's life is as crazy any one of us and really breaks it down. Kath is such a dynamic and motivational speaker and would ❤ to see and episode on how she organizes YNAB for her business!
I started a cash account last November. I like it because my brother pays me cash for his rent. This month I used it for birthday gifts. This way it tracks his payment and tracks who I gave money to. I used to put the money in the bank and then turn around and take it back out.
Speaking of Remit Sethi, he actually does a shout out to YNAB in his book. On one hand he says hes anti budget, but on the other hand, he encourages people to use YNAB if you read the latest edition of his book "I will teach you to be rich."
I keep struggling with whether to categorize dog boarding in travel expenses vs. pet care. Curious why you wouldn’t put it as a travel expense? For us it’s quite a significant amount per trip.
Omg! I love that she uses Ramit Sethis method and YNAB. I just did a fresh start in January and switched to only 4 groups!! And I am with you on the yellow I got rid of all my targets bc I just couldn't 😂😂 love this ❤
I feel the same about the yellow haha I do think the yellow should be a different color since it is so similar to the overspend on credit cards. I love seeing peoples categories! It gives me great ideas
My kids all have a category in my budget where we keep their cash and I love it! I love that when they think they have more money than they do, we can go back and see exactly where they spent it and have a discussion about if they would still spend their money that way today if they had the choice. I'm hoping to teach them thoughful spending. Even though she doesn't get an allowance, my 4 year old has a category, too, where we put money she gets as gifts. I extra love that because when we're out shopping and she wants a toy, it's in the budget and it's her own money. She wants McDonalds for lunch? I don't have to spend the family dining out money! She has her own.
Ooooh, having that record is HUGE! That's just another point in favor of handling my kids' allowances in YNAB. I'm going to have to make the switch! ~BenB
Ben & Kath I just ordered my kids the Greenlight debit card for their allowances. I have a 9, 7, & 4 yr old. 4 yr old didn’t get a card yet but the cash was becoming too much to keep up with and the my 7 yr old started asking when could he get his own card like I have. They give a 30 day free trial (which I’m still in) then $4.99/month for up to 5 kids for the basic plan. The app lets you set up percentages for giving, savings, and spending, you can control how much they can spend at certain places and connect chores or jobs to making money. My kids only have tablets right now and I haven’t checked if they can download the app to their tablet but I can show them at a glance on my phone how much they have. But if your kids have a phone, they’ll be able to see at a glance what they have available and check off their chores/jobs as they go. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for sharing your categories with us Kath 😊
its funny my husband and i have a similar setup. Joint acct for all family spending but personal checking account for his personal spending money. It is %100 percent because i track everything down to the pennies in my wallet and my husband doesn't want to have to track anything 😅
I'd be happy to share my budget, but I have 138 categories as of today, so the episode probably would be 2 hours long 😅. Some of us prefer granularity over simplicity!
We usually skip that during interviews since they tend to go long, but we'll keep them coming (along with another all-YNAB-wins episode planned). ~BenB
Hey, can you guys try not to interrupt the guest so much? It was hard to focus on what she was saying because Ben kept interrupting in the middle of her thought. I could only imagine what it was like for the guest trying to hold on to her thoughts when others were interrupting, because I could barely keep up just listening. This happens nearly every time you guys do episodes like this. It's cool and helpful to hear the hosts input too, just try to make the interruption cleaner, after the guest has gotten out their full thought, is my suggestion. Otherwise, really great episode! I learned some really helpful tips to help me reorganize my budget!
Sorry about that-it's not intentional! This is an issue with the recording software we use. Because we're not in the same location, it's really hard to sync in real time. And I think it's more pronounced with more people. ~Ernie
It is SO distracting and uncomfortable in every interview episode!! 🫣 I came to the comments to be sure it wasn't just me. Thanks for sharing this constructive feedback!!
I think I'm the type of budget nerd that steers towards the other end re: having even/round-looking numbers - I can't STAND a category that is always a perfect "100", "800" or similar; it looks SO fake to me 😂as in it's a category that has never had any movement and it feels sterile or not "lived in" 😆 Most of my categories are literally numbers like "365.84" (yes, two decimals!) and I look at it with satisfaction thinking: Ah yes. Look at all the life in this category. 🥹
We need this series to be more often, please!!!
Hey Libby!! Nice seeing you here! Do you use YNAB? I love it ❤
Yes, once a quarter is nowhere often enough
Agree! Once a month!
Love it

I believe Ramit actually gave a shoutout to YNAB in his book and that you could use it as part of automatic money management
I just finished his book and it made me so happy how many times he mentioned YNAB. I now feel ready to conquer the world!
Yes! Ramit's an old friend of YNAB!
For me, was Netflix > Ramit's show > Ramit's book > Ynab...
I’m at 30 days for age of money!! Yippee
Somehow YNAB turns the dread of upcoming bills into anticipation! So strange, but glad to hear that, as a recent YNAB devotee, my obsession is par for the course!
YES! Exactly!

I’m so with you on the yellow vs light green color for categories!! 🤣
I actually like the yellow. It helps me to assign dollars when the paycheck comes in every 2 weeks.

Seems like Ernie’s audio may be out of sync, especially at the end of the video!
Yes indeed, he was way less involved than normal because of that, I feel

So relatable! I feel exactly the same about cash being just free money!
Absolutely there with Ben - I am meticulous about my budget, but the bit of my brain that controls my food is a literal toddler 😂.

OMG do I relate to Kath about yellow and even numbers.
Oh, I'd really like to find out what she was talking about regarding the group underfunding and whose video she was watching- anyone have an idea?

Thanks for sharing! I've considered Greenlight, but am also fighting for simplicity in money so I can't decide if I want to go all in on it : )

I pay my barber and mechanic in cash. It became too annoying not having a cash account because it was significant money I needed to be accounting for.
Would love to see a full episode on cash accounts!
You're in luck-Ben and I JUST decided the other day to record a cash accounts episode. Stay tuned! ~Ernie
Was there something wrong with Ernie’s audio? There were some really long awkward silences there. Poor Ernie!
I think we had some trouble in the video call with some long delays. We'll get it worked out. So sorry about that! ~BenB
Missing the YNAB wins at the end 😢
We usually skip that during interviews since they tend to go long, but we'll keep them coming (along with another all-YNAB-wins episode planned). ~BenB
Do not use a cash account. All cash goes to Entertainment. If we spend cash on something else, we do a $0 transaction switching the categories.

Case of wine, totally a need 😂
Cash account is where it's at!
Ben and I love cash accounts so much we decided to do an episode on them. Stay tuned! ~Ernie
Is it possible to cover the content in a much more compact and less time?
Please no 😂
@@HenkZ-po4fw haha I'm with you!
We've tried, but unfortunately it seems to be physically impossible to not talk about someone's categories for anything less than an hour. 🤣~BenB
You can go to the settings icon and speed up the video playback speed. I listen to lots of podcasts on 1.25 or 1.5.
I also enjoy the long episodes!

Ok, this is funny and relatable 😂
So appreciate this perspective and totally relatable 😅
Poor Ernie couldn’t get a word in edge-wise! ❤️🫂
