LOL yes it will work for as long as your warranty is still valid. Dell or AW are the clasic example on why us consumer don't have any rights. They changed the voltage through a firm ware update on my original A51 then they send me a refurbished one with a broken (burned) RTX 2080, just one week into the power supply died. If you buy from these people then good luck ASUS never treated me this way. Also the PS5 or Xbox both are faster and produce bettter grahpics and frames and is way more reliable, in regards to gaming. Don't believe me, I can play you Valhalla on this A51 with a RTX 2080, Intel I9 9900 k or a PS5 and watch which one produces a better picture $4000 vs $500.00
That's not true. Power chargers don't top out at around 330Watts. The reason why they decided to split it up like that is because of regulations in the EU. Power chargers over 330Watts are illegal to distribute in most European countries. And since Dell has an international customer base they decided to go with the 2 power brick design.
They don't make adapter with more power anyhow..New and Smaller one come adapter with ucb type c charing... Let face it some of these gaming unit require a lot more power.. otherwise you keep run out of them.

I have a perfectly good Alienware 17R5 with an i9 8950HK and a GTX 1070, with great sound and a 1080p webcam for when I need it.” When a company makes a laptop this expensive with so much powerful hardware and a good size chassis for it, skimping out on even the small things can cheapen the overall value of it.
@zgoaty92 i was thinking of getting the Alienware 17R5 i9 8950HK with the GTX 1080, can you please tell me whats it been like owning the Alienware 17R5 and if there have been any issues or how well games are played on it, i currently own the Alienware 18 which is discontinued now but still great, thanks
Emir hp With the 1080, it might have a better cooling solution, but I would still make sure to undervolt the CPU by around .16 to .2 mV and probably limit it to around 4.3-4.5 GHz on all cores to keep within a good thermal limit. Also, I recommend using Throttlestop to make sure it keeps around those speeds for the majority of the time and also to raise the power limit to 65-70 W on the CPU.
Alright thanks for that info, and what about the gaming experience, how is it from fps to overall performance from your experience? I enjoy playing games as simple as age of empires 3, minecraft and even warcraft 3 to more demanding games like rainbow six siege, overwatch, total warhammer
Emir hp You should be more than fine with AoE 3, Minecraft and Warcraft 3 (especially Warcraft 3); and R6 Siege, Overwatch and TW Warhammer should run just fine, with easily 100+ fps reachable with high settings (maybe not maxed out) 1080p on the latter 3 and older games like AoE 3 and Warcraft 3 the hardware won’t even break a sweat maxed out even at 2160p (4K). Older games like that as I’m sure you’re aware usually tend to rely on single threaded CPU performance, which won’t be an issue with the 8950HK. Just be sure not to use any of the Ray Tracing settings that Nvidia enabled on the Pascal GPUs if there’s any games you play that have the settings (meaning the 1080 you plan on speccing the 17 R5 with), or you can expect fps to tank heavily. Also, if there’s a specific target fps you want to hit, don’t be afraid to play around with game settings to hit what you want, though you probably know this as well.
I like the bit from 35-40 seconds where you can see him first chop the screw out with the screwdriver, then sweep the bits into the machine! (PSA: don't tilt your screwdrivers)
at 6:10 he talks about the key board. I have an alienware 15 R3 that has the same key board and ive never had issues with it. I think the reason dell stuck with the traditional key board is because people like the traditional style a lot better than the new styles. i have the same touch pad too, that's just fine. I do think having the same key board and touch pad as the alienware m15 would be cool but it doesnt matter to me they both work the same. I think the design of this laptop and whats under the chassis is a win win for anybody. The fact that all the components are upgrade able makes it a worthy machine to buy.
Comparing to zephyrous and gs65 isnt correct. Area 51m is for gamers who wants the best for gaming. Gs65 with a rtx 2080 is aprox up to 30% slower in games (fps) compared with area 51m with rtx 2080 . How can this be "better" for gamers???
Mine arrives tomorrow.. Have mine with the I9900 and the 2070 GPU and it topped out at about $2600 tax and all.. It's going to be my desk top replacement for home and on the go should the need arise.. It replaces my 2014 alienware and my even older desktop..
Actually a year later, classic dell happened. And the $$$$ so called upgradeable for marketing reasons just got discontinued and dell daid that they wont be providing upgrades not even an updated motherboard for it in any way so for that reason they made a new version of it with the very fake promises from a year ago
They did on this machine, cant speak for the others. Changing the paste from stock to grizzly Kryonaut only gave me a few degrees off max temps and a couple off average.
I love Alienware laptop especially there desktop towers I know some people like to build there badass setup but some of us can’t do that this laptop is an ultimate experience be is crystal clear as well as with the rtx 2080 graphics cards I would take this any day over a non mobile desktop tower 😂
This is the second review of this laptop with broken keys. I am starting to get second thought about keeping this laptop. It has been great so far thought. Very low temps and I get a little over 3 hours of battery life. If I see one more with broken keys, off it goes.
I noticed something is strange about this gaming laptop that come with two power supplies. I played Cyberpunk or AC Valhalla. if I only plugged in only one power supply. the game will run like it's running low on juice. framerate of 2077 is 30 fps and AC Valhalla is 30fps to 45 fps. but when I plugged two power supplies it was like running at full potential. Framerate is 70 to 90 fps. edited: when I played small GPU requirement game with 1 power supply plugged in. it's around 122fps to 151 fps but with two power supplies it was 221fps or more. edited 2: my old alienware laptop back in 2015 until now on battery mode without doing anything it's 5 hours. but this new laptop on battery mode without doing anything can survive one hours and 51 mins.
I have mx17 gtx 880m, one of the reasons I bought the laptop was that I could change the GPU, but after 5 years of light usage , my GPU is completely dead now. Unfortunately I am not getting any proper support from dell, as their saying that, they are out of stock. At this point I am looking for an advise.
You can't recommend it and then you go on about comparing it with "gaming notebooks"... This is not a proper laptop. Is a Desktop replacement - that is portable! Comparing the both makes no sense (the only thing in common is they look like a laptop).
wonder if any OEM manufacturer bring or dell bring back HDMI in port for their laptops.. and for that performance and price point, it could have at least 2 usb type c (both with thunderbolt 3 function for external pcie card use)
WTF? 5:16 The most this guy does with computers is type on them. Why are these types of journalist reviewing hardware outside of the user experience in terms of user interface. Not hardware manipulation.
Any company using Clevo chassis will be able to match the performance of this machine for a price that is a fraction of this piece, but i have to admit none of those will look as good.
Should be classified as mobile desktop. I don't fault them for not wasting time with ultra-rez monitors on a laptop. It has external support, so you can easily plug this into a real monitor, which is what the majority of people do anyways. A 17inch screen at 4k is stupid anyways.
IDK WTF you're talking about most of the time as like almost all people on this plant I am only familiar with the Metric system. The fact it's not even mentioned makes me question the validity and thoroughness of any information presented here as one must presumably have to be debilitatingly ignorant to completely ignore the most commonly used and understood measurement system in favour of an outdated convoluted in-the-process-of-being-phased-out niche one used locally, right?
Why do you blame your slow internet speed to a perfectly good laptop? Either you upgrade your plan or upgrade your wifi router. Sometimes old wifi routers send out terrible signals to new devices.
@@nixtoshi because physics... aluminum will hold its temperature for much longer than ABS plastics. you will actually lose efficiency in cooling capacity if you use aluminum blades rather than abs plastic blades. this is why essentially almost ANY cooling fan out there for electronics has its blades made out of ABS plastic. bigger is better. computer companies really need to start making laptops bigger and open for upgrades. do not believe your girlfriends because bigger is better your girlfriend is lying to you.
This is an extremely niche product targeted at someone like me. I travel a lot for work multiple countries per year and I am a hardcore PC gamer. I would order something like this but unfortunately the double power brick is a deal breaker for me. I am currently using an MSI GT73 TITAN VR with a GTX 1080. def subscribing very insightful, i recently uploaded a video reviewing this product too! it's my first video and i was hoping if by any possibility you could review it and critique it
I wonder.. how much battery life you would get if you plug a 90Wh battery in your desktop.... You are praising it for having DESKTOP components and later you can't recommend it because of battery life? Show me someone that plays games on a gaming laptop on BATTERY?!?! No one... Sadly, you are contradicting yourself over the course of the review, so I can't really recommend it. The "gaming laptops" you recommend over the Area51m is like recommending tablets to play PC games! (Yes, tablets, not even consoles). I am sorry for being too harsh, but I think you lack focus on your review. PS: Next time please, don't "kill the screws" if you try to disassemble something, as you show in the video (clearly you didn't read the stamped markers on what type of screw driver you need to remove the screws). Also, you don't even touch the aspect that Dell put the whole Upgrade & Dissemble manual online and it's actually dome very very good! I agree the touchpad is not the best, yet, I've never ever used the touchpad on any laptop to play any games (and I've never seen anyone ever doing that). On the other hand, the keyboard it's HAT DOWN! Alienware always had the best keyboards in laptops! Overall, a mediocre not really thought over review. Sadly:(
"Want to throw in a CPU from Intel in a few years? You can just throw that in." Nah mate, that's not how that works. Also, Dell have stated that proprietary GPU may not be supported by them in the future.
Yeah but neither the Asus or Razer come close to the a51 in terms of performance plus the upgradability makes it future proof. It has to be thic.A51 crushes those puny slim laptops.
It is chunky and big but that's why it's better at heat management. I honestly never prefer slim gaming laptops. If you need a thin laptop you should go for a Surface.
On a 17" monitor, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4K due to how dense the pixels would already be fitting inside such a small screen. 4K is only recommended for screen sizes bigger than 23" at minimum. Preferably 27". At 17", 1080p is already slightly overkill. So you would rather get better refresh rates (144hz) than a higher resolution.

Guys last name is, almost like "Hardware". Sounds pretty badass.
With a 4K display it may just last 20mins without the plug 👽
Great honest review, keep it up brother
I like the bit from 35-40 seconds where you can see him first chop the screw out with the screwdriver, then sweep the bits into the machine! (PSA: don't tilt your screwdrivers)
Man I really want this ! Debating between the Razer blade and this Area 51m . Slim is ideal, but I love a clunky powerhouse! . Great review.
It’s been a year did you get either of them
@@Thunderbolt243so funny you ask this! I bought my Razer blade 15 on the 11th this month! 🤣🤣 Still got the receipt from Razer.
RISE9800 nice how is it so far
@@Thunderbolt243 Super awesome. Has been going to work with me since 👌
Very cool laptop. I have one with i7-9700k and rtx2080, really fast and powerful.
Any issues?
Yeah how's it holding up? 😃😃
Jin Zhang ^^
Is this the fully spaced out version
The aliens have gifted this to us
at 6:10 he talks about the key board.
What makes it worse than the desktop is under the hood
Do you have to return those laptops after you review them? If not send me the one with the broken keyboard :)
Rodney Sawh deadass tho I want one too
Comparing to zephyrous and gs65 isnt correct. Area 51m is for gamers who wants the best for gaming. Gs65 with a rtx 2080 is aprox up to 30% slower in games (fps) compared with area 51m with rtx 2080 . How can this be "better" for gamers???
Plus the area 51 will be more future proof because you can upgrade basically everything on it.
I will wait for the price to drop
Awesome
Hope they make one with Slimmer bezels, 15", Full White in 2020 🤞🏻😊
wish dells customer service wasnt so bad my order is delayed for the 2nd time with no explanation just want my area 51m :(
Mine arrives tomorrow..
Have mine with the I9900 and the 2070 GPU and it topped out at about $2600 tax and all..
It's going to be my desk top replacement for home and on the go should the need arise..
It replaces my 2014 alienware and my even older desktop..
David Groves how’s the laptop so far? How’s the GPU for games, FPS etc?
Actually a year later, classic dell happened. And the $$$$ so called upgradeable for marketing reasons just got discontinued and dell daid that they wont be providing upgrades not even an updated motherboard for it in any way so for that reason they made a new version of it with the very fake promises from a year ago
I wonder how its pheremo management performance going
Is it usb 3.0? Why arent the ports blue
Hope this beast got dust filters included
So the laptop doesn't have HDR support. If I buy an HDR monitor and connect it, will I have HDR?
he stripped the screw lmao!!!
Did they finally started using decent thermal paste? unlike the previous generations... Repasting was a must.
I'd save the clicks from the kb and hook up a mechanical kb when i'm home
I’ve had mine for over a year, no broken keys, I’m sure he smacked it in some dumbass way.
Modest review, but gave a thumbs up for the music at the end.
This laptop: gaming powerhouse, has rgb and fully customizable specs
Me: *upgrades to intel graphics*
I have mx17 gtx 880m, one of the reasons I bought the laptop was that I could change the GPU, but after 5 years of light usage , my GPU is completely dead now. Unfortunately I am not getting any proper support from dell, as their saying that, they are out of stock. At this point I am looking for an advise.
Is the 4k 60hz display better for gaming than the 1080p 144hz?
Best gaming laptop nuff said. why? coz its upgradeable
Well this comment didn't age well.
Very nice, honest and sincere review, as always, from Devindra. Well done. Thanks.
m17 or m51
*cries in broken acer nitro 5*
WTF? 5:16 The most this guy does with computers is type on them. Why are these types of journalist reviewing hardware outside of the user experience in terms of user interface. Not hardware manipulation.
Good one
It looks so cool.
You can't the Intel keeps changing the CPU socket every 2 generations
Is it $1950 usd?
is that 2nd hand#? rrp here is $4400
US$
If plug it into a monitor with 1440p can it use the 1440p
Yes. Any resolution for the matter.
Most laptop can do it
Absolutely smashing review! Loved every second of it. Oh and cool laptop.
how much?????????????
Great review, great laptop.
Your complaining about the keyboard? Do you even play PC games?
Any company using Clevo chassis will be able to match the performance of this machine for a price that is a fraction of this piece, but i have to admit none of those will look as good.
But can it run Crysis 🤔
Should be classified as mobile desktop. I don't fault them for not wasting time with ultra-rez monitors on a laptop. It has external support, so you can easily plug this into a real monitor, which is what the majority of people do anyways. A 17inch screen at 4k is stupid anyways.
I Want the version with rtx 2060
IDK WTF you're talking about most of the time as like almost all people on this plant I am only familiar with the Metric system. The fact it's not even mentioned makes me question the validity and thoroughness of any information presented here as one must presumably have to be debilitatingly ignorant to completely ignore the most commonly used and understood measurement system in favour of an outdated convoluted in-the-process-of-being-phased-out niche one used locally, right?
Nommy stay mad
@@TheAustin007powers Expect to be reported for hate speech as I just did when you make wishes like that.
is anyone having slow gaming downloads with this pc (just asking)
No sir. All my games have downloaded very fast so far.
Jeb Hack how long have you had it. I recently brought a Alienware m17 and I’m on my second one bue to horrible download speed .
@@galaxygaming7823 About 3 days now. Still so far so good.
That's called terrible internet speed
Why do you blame your slow internet speed to a perfectly good laptop? Either you upgrade your plan or upgrade your wifi router. Sometimes old wifi routers send out terrible signals to new devices.
this guy did not take a shower before this video
Just bought a lunar white highest specs area 51m, but when I unboxed it it’s BLACK
Do this laptop need review?
Why oh why are the bezels GLOSSY? Seriously, Dell?
I HATE all those others thin pecies of crap finally something that looks like it can survive an Aussie summer
Wow you absolutely roasted this laptop I was optimistic about its concept before watching! 😆 Nice review!
fans are not even aluminum yet? what the heck ??? for the price and specs i won't spend money on this type of gaming laptop
Interesting point. They should remove as much plastic from the insides for aluminum to make it dissipate heat faster
(and no, household or industrial fans don't count...)
even a CNC machine that costs over fucking 50,000$ has its fan blades made out of ABS plastics...
bigger is better. computer companies really need to start making laptops bigger and open for upgrades. do not believe your girlfriends because bigger is better your girlfriend is lying to you.
It’s heavy as shit I can’t imagine two power bricks for it. I will wait for the next generation of CPU and GPU updates before I upgrade
Portable desktop
give me this nootebook?
you look like half awake
is from staidea
If im Alienware ill not send laptops to engadget anymore... They dont like the product.. They just complaining about anything..
def subscribing very insightful, i recently uploaded a video reviewing this product too! it's my first video and i was hoping if by any possibility you could review it and critique it
I wonder.. how much battery life you would get if you plug a 90Wh battery in your desktop....
Sadly:(
Good laptop for billionaires.
No thunderbolt 3? No thanks

Finally
Awwwwww......
Lol area 51
"Want to throw in a CPU from Intel in a few years? You can just throw that in." Nah mate, that's not how that works. Also, Dell have stated that proprietary GPU may not be supported by them in the future.
I fell asleep listening to this guy reviewing the laptop
This grandpa is disappointing
Batman doesn't like it, it's trash
Buddy everything is cool except windows, it's fake. You should buy a original one.
Your voice doesn’t match
So chunky, no thanks. Would much prefer razer blade or asus zephyrus
Yeah but neither the Asus or Razer come close to the a51 in terms of performance plus the upgradability makes it future proof. It has to be thic.A51 crushes those puny slim laptops.
@@coolmodee
Agreed.👍
@@ohlawd3699 Yup plus dell allows you to.take the machine apart. Other manufacturers your warranty will be voided if you take it apart.
@@coolmodee
I like that very much. 😊👍
It is chunky and big but that's why it's better at heat management. I honestly never prefer slim gaming laptops. If you need a thin laptop you should go for a Surface.
Didnt Trump say the US is full? What this guy doing there?
LOL, coming from a person who himself doesn't even live in the U.S... 😂
Is the 4k 60hz display better for gaming than the 1080p 144hz?
On a 17" monitor, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4K due to how dense the pixels would already be fitting inside such a small screen. 4K is only recommended for screen sizes bigger than 23" at minimum. Preferably 27". At 17", 1080p is already slightly overkill. So you would rather get better refresh rates (144hz) than a higher resolution.
