Excellent advice. My dad taught me how to drive with no clutch when I was 14, I’ve had to use it once, and taught both my sisters this. Top video as per always
I made it from Penrith to Charnock Richard services towing a caravan using this method that my grandad showed me. I agree, knowing how to get to safer place could save a life. Kudos for demonstrating this.
You are good at these educational videos, I wish I’d known this that time my clutch packed in in a queue of traffic, I blocked the road for ages til someone stopped to help me push it onto the verge 🙈
Hi I'm Ady from John fotheringhans recovery. I often drive my truck this way. Yes I'm lazy cart be bothered to use the clutch but I also do it this way as I'm on my 2nd clutch and the trucks done 574k miles. I tell all my recoverys with broken clutch about this style off driving. I pleased you put it out there
I'm a new subscriber to your channel so only just come across this. It is something I learnt to do back in the 80s. My driving instructor taught me as I mentioned wanting to learn to double declutch to drive vintage vehicles, and it has been useful for a number of incidents but this is my favourite one. Back about 13 years ago, I was with a newish girlfriend, Sue, holidaying in Norfolk and visiting my God-daughter and family. With all of us in the car in the middle of nowhere the clutch failed. I checked and found the clutch master cylinder pushrod had burst through the back of the clutch pedal. Stupid VAG design that uses a plastic clip to hold it together. No worries, I just asked Sue to find me directions to a Halfords or similar, and I carried on driving with no clutch, restarting when needed using the starter motor. I bought a small tool kit, and a pack of assorted hose clamps from Halfords (the hose clamps were rubbish and I broke a lot of them). I was able to rebuild the back of the clutch pedal using the hose clamps and the leaf springs ripped out of my old spare wiper blades I had in the boot. While I was doing that Sue was playing with the hose clips and found one that fitted on the third finger of her left hand. She called me out from the car foot well, and showed me her hand, saying "It fits!". Me being able to calmly deal with the clutch issue, and fix the car at the road side was the deciding point for her. The repair lasted the rest of our holiday, and the return trip to Manchester. We celebrate out 10th wedding anniversary in June! ❤
Great technique for flat-landers, probably not going to work with the starter on a steep hill though, I learned double-declutching on old cars and tractors.
Nice technique thanks for sharing. Bit like emergency moving a car on the starter motor when the engine won't start. Have a great bank holiday weekend.
I actually drove a high top transit from junction 5 on the M6 all the way to North Wales with no clutch. The bugger snapped I'd only just picked it up from Milton Keynes. Thing made it. No crashes god knows how. And a ton of grey hairs soon followed But this does work. Great video 👍👍
@@Fighting_Torque Not many people actually know it. Nice one for sharing it. Let me know if you want them Ray Bans bud. And they are real lol No made in China anywhere to be seen 🤣🤣
I learnt this technique the hard way many years ago in my first car when the clutch cable snapped on my metro I'd only be driving a couple of months. Awesome advice and brilliant video keep up the good work and looking forward to the next video 👍🏻
Good advice, well worth knowing as could get you out of a horrible shituation. Had it recently myself in my lwb renault master when the slave cylinder failed big time on the motorway.
That's exactly the situation I'm talking about but it was easier to just say clutch failed ha ha. I had the same on our Primastar last year mate. Had to drive it 25 miles home with clutch pedal on the floor.
I've just realised what I do differently to you. I tend to blip it in neutral, then engage the gear as the revs drop back down. Your way's better in newer stuff that's not as free revving.
Very good advice for people who dont know I already know that method about 6 years ago my mums clutch went on her Vauxhall corsa sxi she was stuck in calne in Wiltshire so I used that method to get her home to hullavington a small village in rural Wiltshire it worked perfectly keep the vids coming dude 🤙✌
@@Fighting_Torque yea I grew up down that way and I was down that way when mums car died so I resued her with that clutch method sadly mum is no longer with us she passed 15 th of December 2021 will always miss her she was a legend go right out of her way to help anyone anyway cheers mate and keep the vids coming peace out ✌🤙
Great video once again. Good advice to get people out of trouble. Many years ago I had to bring a fully loaded 8 wheel tipper back to Lincoln from Whitwell stone quarry. The lorry was an AEC Mammoth Major with crash box, not much fun setting off from junction in gear and trying to start it made you feel bloody sea sick 🤮😂.
This is really useful advice and really enjoy the content. Have you thought about doing a video talking about your experiences setting up as an independent operator? I’m looking to take the leap and set up independently and it’s a mine field particularly with insurance, o licence and weight.
I drove my recovery truck all the way from wales down to devon like this a couple years ago when the slave failed lol good bit of advice. But remember if the clutch is burnt out this technique dosent work but still good advise if you lose your clutch pedal
@@Fighting_Torque haha tricks and tips you pick up through life. Yeah very informative video tho it's surprising how many people don't know this when they lose there clutch pedal. I try to explain this to some people when they lose there pedal and they look at me like I'm crackers 🤣🤣🤣
Great video. People doing the technique would be a video in itself 😂. Did it while I was a mechanic many times. With so many automatic cars know that would be impossible but again videoing someone trying to do it would hilarious
careful terminology, as you do still have a clutch friction plate ....... glad you mentioned the mechanically unsympathetic bit...... similar to old school truck driving, doubling the clutch, cannot fault you helping people getting themselves out of the shit
Yeah you're right Nick, spent ages wondering how to word it but for the layperson a clutch pedal on the floor is a nackard clutch... Cheers for the comment mate.
Iv know how to do this for years had to use it in a work mini bus the slave cylinder had failed and had to use the stater as well to get going from lights and traffic but modern manual it's not possible to do this anymore from a stop as u have to push the clutch pedal down to start the car it's handy to know
ive got to 1 min so put car gear 1st start car put foot on gas as car moves lift a bit move gear to middle rev then push to 2nd it will drop in reapeat to 5th , to come dowm drop out 5th rev push gentle to 4th it will drop in if not rev again be gentle all the way to 2nd try not to stop coz if u do stop , turn off car now goto start and read again
I've got no data to back it up, but I would say 9 out of 10 cars in the UK are manual. It's a bit like Americans with the metric system, people think there's something a bit wrong about progressing to an easier way of doing things 😂
@@Fighting_Torque nah mate don't worry you always pick out good subjects and the quality is class, wish idve watched this before I had to learn this the hard way to be fair 😄
Me again..... This reminds me of the good old days and double-declutching. Anyway, I got released early cos they found my body so I went for a drive, I was going down a country lane and thought "I'm gonna do what my mate on UA-cam said" so I grabbed my gearstick and moved it out of drive, I then exit the car via the windscreen cos park is the next one to drive in my car, so I'm sliding up the road on my face and then have an engine roll over me, I think it was mine but I didn't have time to check the serial number, I get to my hands and knees and head for a farm about 1/4 of a mile up the road, the police drive by and ......... well I'm in hospital having craniofacial reconstruction, then they are taking me back to the dock next week to try and do me for curb crawling🤣 On a serious note folks, don't try and do this in a car with automatic transmission, there is no neeeeed.
I have this car 😂. Mines a 2013 model classed as red but more of a purple colour. If you need a demo car anytime you can come borrow my little Twingo ❤
Practice it... Just not in a car you care about 😂 it is more difficult on modern cars because the throttle response is nowhere near as lively as older stuff.
Fair one, I'm limited on characters mate and that's why I clearly state in the video 3 times "if your clutch pedal is on the floor" which is what I go to numerous times a week with folk in vulnerable positions. But yeah, can't please all the people all the time. 🤜🏼🤛🏽
