Have you ever tried topping your peppers? I tried it one year just as an experiment and it was such a success that I do it every year no. Once your young plant has 6 set of true leave cut the top growth off to 4 true leaves. Doing so forces the plant to Bush out instead of grow high (more branches = more support and more growth point for peppers) I do this with all pepper types. My yield has tripled even with bell peppers

I love that you show the time progression of the whole project. So many people just do one day projects that they might do an update on in a few months. This way you can see how they grew and weather the technique was successful. You two are great and I learn a lot.

@7munkee We can have equally gorgeous peppers like this by mid-June. I live just over the bridge in New Jersey. I start my plants indoors under grow lights the last week of January. They get up-potted once in March and again in April. I am planting them outside today! I followed Hollis and Nancys Homestead ua-cam.com/video/o_q2_Bf3w9Q/v-deo.html making only minor tweaks over the years to get the best backyard peppers! =)

@@oliversky8767 - It is true that steps can be taken to start the season earlier no matter where one lives, but you are forgetting how large PA is and on the other side of the mountains it's an entirely different climate, and we don't know where the OP lives. Even then, only the suburban Philly area matches NJ temps. One need only get up towards the Lehigh Valley and it's going to become noticeably colder than it is in Jersey. And if you look at a spring frost map you can see your state warms a whole month before PA does. The 2 states may be next to each other but they have very different climates.

Originally from St. Augustine but now living several hours inland in the country I can tell you the Minocan's brought the Datil Pepper over although the Datil originated in China. The Oldest City has a Minocan Festival which features many products made with Datil's. Datils make an excellent Datil Mustard good on BBQ. Also a red sauce which is excellent in red beans and rice and many more dishes. The seed can now be found at Baker Creek Seed Company. If in St. Augustine in the Spring you can find small plants at any feed store and most local nurseries.

Yes, i beleive they are a chinesne variety like habeneros, ghost, scotch bonnet, reaper....so they really prefer 80F to 90F. (What is that, 40-45C?). Here in new england in the US where its also temperate, once the roots are well established they can grow up to an inch per day when its at the ideal temperature range. Because its early july right now, its only just now getting to optimal growing conditions for these types of peppers despite starting them back in march.
