    The first year I tried to grow eggplant I killed the little seedlings I germinated. The second year I had beautiful plants that were blooming but we moved before any fruit ripened. I’m hoping that the third year is a charm and I finally get a few eggplant to eat.

    I love roasted eggplant. I'll use either kind. Don't have the salt the thinner ones to get excess moisture out like the thicker ones. It also tastes great in sinigang (Filipino sour soup and my most favorite food; Lee doesn't like it, but our son Daniel loves it).

      I've noticed that he doubled the amount of bone and blood meal when he's using pots,,and not the fish in his ground planting

      I don’t use fish in containers because the container soil will not break down the fish fast enough. Becomes a rotten mess

    Happy New Year! Can you tell me what growing zone you’re in? I’m in 8b in SE Louisiana and I think we are in possibly the same climate zone. I’m a big fan of Johnny’s and Black Kow - of course. I’ve been watching for years! Hugs & thanks to all!
    PS: Patio Baby (Park Seed, maybe Johnny’s) eggplant is a great edible & ornamental patio plant. May not need staking! Beautiful shape if you set it for open form, like a tiny fig tree shape.

    Like you, I’m trying to cook eggplants such that I enjoy them. Maybe pickling small ones, in a sweet pickle????? Remember when Ichibana was the only long one in the catalogs? I’m old !!! I wonder if eggplants are any use juiced when young?

    Great Video! I ordered a couple of Asian eggplant varieties this year because the yield seems to be greater and timing is shorter, that's important up hear in the North. Longer fruiting varieties fruit just as we get our first frost. Great video!

    God bless. You made my morning. We grow these eggplants. I couldn't stand these for years. Meet my wife 20 years ago in Singapore and she started cooking them. I've gradually grown to like them, and they are good for you. Three plants supply us with enough... You give me an idea. I'm going to start a few in some 5-gallon buckets and give to some friends with limited space and income and help them get started with their gardening.

    I am Asian, not Korean but I hate purple eggplant (hope that doesn't classify me as "that weird Asian person" type. I just hate the texture of it. It feels and tastes like a sponge to me :). I do love the Thai green stripey eggplants though. However, my husband "blessed him" loves eggplant parmesan (tastes a bit like a fried cheesy sponge) but what do I know?" LMAO! I love you guys.     My eggplant always loses its fruit after flowering. Not in direct sun this time of year. Maybe it needs some phosphorus?

      That is exactly what is wrong. Add much more bone meal in the soil when you plant than you have been.

      I grow eggplant 🍆 in 9b FL in 20 gallon plastic containers using black kow, perlite, and coconut 🥥 coir mix amended with azomite, blood meal, bone meal and kelp meal. I feed them just like my tomatoes on a 2 week schedule and give them lots of sun.

    Can you do a comparison of a plant that is grown in a bucket: 1) Your standard potting mix only. 2) Your mix with Bone meal only 3) Your mix with with Blood meal only 4) Your normal. (Mix, Bone & Blood meal)? Thanks! Love your videos.

    Hi hollis and nancy! Im in upstate NY.
    I tried your method this year(although i forgot the bone meal) and these are the best crop of eggplant I've ever had in 50 years of gardening! Black beauty seed, ate the first one today, about 4 months from starting the seed. Delicious!The plants are loaded with fruit and blossoms. I'll have so many to share. I'm gonna do lots more container gardening using your knowledge. Thank you!

    I'd love to know what you do with all the old compost from the buckets once the plants have done their thing.....Personally I compost mine to rejuvinate it for next years...

    I’ve never cared for eggplant to eat but maybe growing it yourself tastes better. 🤷🏻‍♀️I’m willing to try. I’ll have to find some recipes and maybe make some veggie chips out of it. Who knows. Maybe I’ll like it better if I pick them before they get bitter or pithy like I’ve gotten from the store in the past.

      @@mousiebrown1747 Yup, about the same. You should be fine. We use a physical calendar and record what we actually plant, when they sprout, fertilize, water, harvest, weather
      anomalies. Not as good as the journal we've been meaning to start for years, but still a great quick reference. You're off to a great start. 😊

    Hello, I was not able to find the video about mixing soil, it is important to have right amount of manor . it would be nice to put the link related to the subjects that you mention in your video. success in gardening and have a good harvest is not all about seeding and watering. the trouble shooting and dieses are the most important factors to have nice harvest and in my opinion what truly need to be cover.

    I did eggplant in the five: gallon bucket but I did use hydroponics made myself a greenhouse and us experimenting I was amazed the fruit tasted so good but I’d like to try your method I would like to make more of them

      I've grown them in buckets before, zucchini too. I only had one real problem. and that was getting them pollinated. Since I was growing them on my porch with mainly non-flowering houseplants, they needed to be hand pollinated. Once I figured that out, I had plenty of yummy squash to fry up as well as enough to make the best tasting pickles with.

      The initial fertilizer usually lasts the entire season. If I see them stall and look like leaves yellowing I will hit them with liquid fertilizer as needed

    Loved following the plants' development. I wish you'd given closeups of the harvesting - specifically how close to the main stem you cut to remove the fruit.
