      Yeah, not everyone can afford expensive race ready eurotrash lol. I feel ya, if its a little damp out on a cold start my bike will not start until the 10th kick or so. On a clear day it'll start in less then 5 kicks usually though. Went from electric start to kick start and I can say its easier to start after laying it over in a mud hole (mentally) if that makes any sense

    Another tip I see very few people doing, is to slowly kick the bike 2 or 3 times as a sort of primer. Helps lubricate the cylinder and is easier on your kick starter if the bike doesn’t want to start first kick cold.

Took like 5-10 minutes to get all 3 rolling and broke a sweat. Today I walked out there and found top of stroke perfectly and didn't even kick the shit out of them, just went full stroke, all 3 kicked over 1-2 kicks NO PROBLEM. Quite a library of useful videos that you have put together. Everyt ime I need a little information or direction on something, you usually have something that helps. My son's recent purchase was a used 85, and for whatever reason it would only start with some throttle. We've had some work done on it, like a new piston and ring, and we continued with the throttle to start with choke, and it wasn't cooperating too much. After watching this video, our last ride day went perfect. Every start literally took one kick ---- whether hot or cold. We just followed the tips on this video. Great.

    I bought an 87 yz250 that sat for 2 years and wouldn't start and paid $200 for it. Had it for 30 minutes riding it around the block and it was running strong. A year later still have the bike still runs strong and am confident the bike will start when out on the trails and track. Nice complete dirtbike with a powerful engine and suspension sucks but its in good condition just 80s suspension is miles behind 90s and 2000s suspension that im used to riding

    Hello, Dirt N Iron, I have a quick question for you. I should be getting a bike soon but i'm debating on a CRF250R and a 1990 YZ125 for $1800 which looks and at least says its runs very nice. I know the downfalls of a 2 stroke and also a 4 stroke but I am still unsure. And I am not very uneducated on carbs and engines, I know quite a bit about them, but not everything. I am 13 years old, I weigh about 130 lbs, I'm 6 foot tall, and I am doing mostly trail riding but not very tight trial riding mostly wide trials but some tight trials. I have some dirt bike experience but not a lot, I would start on a 150 4 stroke if I really had to, but its just uncomfortable since i'm 6 foot plus I would like something a bit faster. I have a lot of riding experience on mostly four wheelers, right now I ride a 2013 Raptor 700R SE. Right now I am leaning towards the YZ125, although mixing gas is a con for me. Here is the YZ I am looking at, maybe you could inform me on why not and why to get a 2 stroke especially for trial riding. I have rode a lot on 2 stroke snowmobiles and so far haven't messed up a engine but snowmobiles 2 stroke engines are of course a tad different, thank you! :)

    • @dirtniron
      @dirtniron  7 років тому +4

      125 2 stroke is somewhat lazy from the bottom and rips once you hit the powerband, that's why its not the best bike for technical trails when you many times need to lug the bike in low rpm, you would find it little lazy I think. 250 4 stroke has more linear power delivery and pulls better from the bottom. both can be fun on the trail, they just need to be ridden differently. I definitely suggest to get full size bike, skip 150 4 stroke, I think you can handle full size. If you are leaning towards 125 then go for it, it will be great bike for you. Good experience to have, you can always sell it and get something else if this doesn't work for you, used bikes don't really loose value in a year or two.

    • @colea.j9262
      @colea.j9262 7 років тому

      Thank you for the fast response, I have another question and something to say. It wouldn't really hurt me to rebuild the top end of the engine after 100 hours on a build because I do enjoy messing with engines even though I am not the best at it. The reason I have been leaning away from the 250 4 stroke is because the price difference and I can barely find a 250 around where I live. I love the 2 stroke sound but yet like you said I would probably foul some plugs but I do tend to go pretty fast but not fast fast on trials. Like I said I would really want the 2 stroke but, do you think if I took care of usual maintenance and treated it well it would last me 100 hours till a top end rebuild? My brother had a KTM 125 2 stroke and rode it around everywhere with us and always made it around but he got rid of it and he never had to do engine work to it, he had it for about a year. But I guess it varies. So what do you think would happen to the bike (the 2 stroke) after about 50 hours of trial riding going medium speed. Thanks for the response and any tips on a 2 stroke that would help me please say, thank you. :)

      no thats not normal, good you turned it off right away. there is something with your carburetor, check it the cable works fine, if it isnt shut open, clean the carb, inspect it.. there is something wrong.. make sure you have enough gas flowing to the carb.. sometimes when running out of gas your rpm will go up like that..

      Tommy Emery i would definitely clean and maybe rebuild/rejet the carb depending on how it ran before it sat- idling,starting hard like my suzuki...
      my 125 hated to start even on 80 degree (ferenheight) days i would have to do everything including some crazy things to get it running. i figured out later that the last owner put a racing ignition system in it and that was the problem.
      i would mainly check the carb and ignition system and make sure its not a 20$ ebay kit that does nothing but make it run like junk
      either way i hope you can do your fix and keep riding👍

      Tommy Emery make a video of it running and post it? Just run it for a few seconds don't blow it up then maybe we would have a better idea of what it's doing sounds like your throttle is stuck open tho

    One common problem with carburettor dirt bikes is there is not fuel in them after they have stood for a while and if you don`t put the bike on the side flooding the carburettor you can kick them for minutes without they starting. My WR450 was like that and I see many other bikes with carburettor must do the same.

    Awesome vid Dirt N Iron ! Subscribed ! I like your vids and explanations, refreshing compared to the other stuff out there. I have a question please... I just bought a yz125 New* . When I bought the bike the dealer had the pre mix in and everything was ready to go. I haven't been able to ride it or break it in at all since I got it almost three weeks ago. (sigh*) my dealer has said to me it's fine if I start it up and break it in without draining the fluid and Re-mixing even though its been sitting. By the time I ride it will be about 3 weeks and a few days. I have read online that possibly you should never use pre mix thats been sitting. ( so many opinions on everything) The dealer says its no issue... Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated. Could the sitting fluids cause havoc in the bike? And or could it potential be harmful for break in. Thanks SO MUCH!

      James, congrats to your purchase, you got yourself great bike. Personally I wouldn't worry about gas that has been sitting 3-4 weeks, just start it and break it in following the manual. My 2 strokes sits for a month sometimes and I never had an issue, you should be fine. Good luck bro!

      +James Agostino yea, I think so. They tell me to change top end on my RMZ each 12 hours :) that's like once a month if you ride each weekend. But if it is not too much hassle, drain it and get new gas I bet you don't have full tank. Just because it is brand new bike before break in. I think that's what I would do now when I think more about it. Out of the respect for new bike, she deserves to start her life in a best possible way. ;)

    • @recklessjaye5338
      @recklessjaye5338 7 років тому +4

      Edoardo Mauri on a 2 stroke you shouldn't be able to start the kick start the bike with your pinkie. If you wanna be precise you can go to a auto parts store and get a compression tester and put it in to your spark plug hole and test it. Google the number your bikes compression should be at. If it's too low you'd need a top end rebuild.

    • @dirtniron
      @dirtniron  7 років тому +2

      +Edoardo Mauri you should have good resistance on the kick starter, it should not be too easy, you can get gauge and measure it and then check toward recommend values from your bike. Once it's too low you need to rebuild top end.
