A 1984 YZ250 costs about $1,400, (already had 12" of wheel travel with up-side down forks breaking out, exhaust power valves, water cooling, disk brakes, single shock linkage rear suspension, and my 2019 YZ250 is about the same with a aluminum frame.), and a 1988 CR250 costs $3,200 new. The price doubled in 2 years, because of the production rule. 2) The 4-strokes were not a free market idea, but an idea pushed on the industry, through the FIM/AMA, by environmental groups and government groups, (far from free market), and the price doubled again. Yamaha was the first to race one with Doug Henry on the pegs in 1997. Both times, Yamaha was at the tip of the spear, and I find it ironic that Yamaha is the only Japanese manufacture still making a 125 and 250cc 2-stroke. Wanna bet the cost of a new YZ250 2-stroke is really $6,500, ($7,500 is what they sell for), and for every YZ 250 sold, $1,000 of that profit goes into their 4-stroke program? One thing is for sure. Because of the FIM, the market share has shrunk to 1/10th of the bikes sold in the USA compared to the sales before the 1986 production rule. The FIM/AMA need some good free market competition with objective reasoning, ---or this sport dies eventually.
The YZs first came out with USD forks in 1989. I had one. Jacky Martens won the MX world championship on a 4 stroke Husqvarna in 1993, which was the first win for a four stroke since Jeff Smith won in 1965.
I started riding my first time last year at 38 on a 2011 KTM XCW. Had never ridden a bike in my life; didn't understand power band, sucked at clutching. Been riding past few weeks just taking it slow; messing with powerband springs and figuring out what I like and don't like and learning to clutch. I've ridden a friends 4 stroke since the accident, but I'm gonna stick to the 2 stroke and learn to ride properly. Yes I'm an idiot - was my 4th bone break, so wasn't anything new. To those who feel that the Powerband is too narrow, fit a VHM cylinder head and you will wonder why you did not do that earlier! We fitted one to our 150sx (that was an awsum bike to starters) and we ended up fitting a bigger front sprocket and a smaller rear one to keep the new power under control. Our 150sx is now a 250f killer!

I have a built YZ 125 making 42 hp on VP C12. To say they have less power would be talking stock power out of the box. With the built engine in the light weight 125 i have a far better power to weight ratio than even a 450. I can take them on holeshots even and have several times racing open class. The best part is 2 laps in the four stroke guys are getting arm pump and tired while im still just flicking the light weight machine. I usually get a good start with it and then stick with the leaders for a few laps and by the last laps when they are tired i put the pressure on forcing their mistakes. Two strokes are easy winners if you build them right and learn how to ride them correctly.
Just got myself an 88 cr250r 2-stroke for my very first bike. Started watching your videos and taking mental notes. A little less nervous to start first hand learning😂🤘🔥
I’m 44 years old and I ride a 2005 RM250. Yes it’s hard to ride sometimes but it’s by far the snappiest bike I’ve ever owned. A 2 stroke will make you a better rider because they make you work. Some guys hate that part of it so they ride a 4 stroke fart machine. I’m a kid of the 80’s and 90’s and I’ll ride 2 strokes as long as I physically can.
You can have your stock seat lowered about 1". I had "JB Sport Trim", (Nicole Guild in Gowen Michigan, 616-994-4767), cut mine and put the stock cover back on. I made a cardboard template, (flush to the bottom of the seat, showing what I wanted cut off at the top), so she could see what I wanted cut, and she did a perfect job for $80.00. I gave here $100.00. That is the least you will pay, to have any part lowered on your bike, and them most for the money by far. If you have the suspension lowered a bit, (I went 6% of my travel on both ends too), do not send your suspension to PR2 in PA. I have to redo my shock myself, because they did not know a simple calculation for the spacer thiskness in the shock.
KX 250 2 stroke owner here.... It Is a Brand New 2005 KX250M1....The bike was started for a few minutes to set up the jetting for a performance pipe, and remains PERFECT. With only a few minutes running time, never having been ridden nor seen a grain of dirt in its 17 year life,....I am going to ride it and not keep it as a static museum quality display. 2 stokes are all I know,...and I know a lot. I have had it for 6 months, and thought about the best course of action to break it in, and stash some back-up parts first before going forth,...its all slowly reaching a good point to opt for a spring roll out. I`ll keep you posted....
In Performance? Nah. I’m not even going to argue that. if they did perform better 4ts wouldn’t be used in almost all professional competitions. But for personal use, they are definitely better IMO. Barley any mechanic visits needed, cheaper to maintain, and quite fun. You could argue you want the best performance, but unless you really are serious in racing, you would barley be able to open up the full potential of even a 125 2t.
I love 2 strokes. I prefer the older bikes since that’s what my budget can afford as well. Currently ride a 2001 yz 250 2 stroke. 7 hours in the rebuild.
Can you guys make a start video please? I really need some tips for starts. If i can get my starts down, I'll pull away from everyone, and have GREAT races!
I love both 2 and 4 strokes but I have a ktm sx 85 rn and I It's my first dirt bike, but It's my third day with it and I have already travelled to other villages, cuz I live in one. I love it, but there's no tracks or stuff like that in my region, so the only way I ride it is at the mountains, or the very bad roads. You have to see what kinds of offroads we have here in the balkans. They're just crazy!
Should clarify this is specific to motocross. In hard enduro, everyone rides two strokes. There's also Sherco, Beta, Yamaha, KTM, and Rieju still making two stroke race bikes.
Nice vid, man! We’re 2-strokers-300xc for me and 125sx for my son. You sort of hinted at it, but the lower center of gravity contributes to the lighter feel.
Man, I'd choose a 2 STROKE in a heartbeat over a 4 stroke. The sound, the smell, and more importantly, the big names that made it great on a 2 stroke. De Coster, Marty Smith, David Baily, O'mara, Hannah, Moats just to name a few and the list goes on and on and on. KEEP ON Brrrrrrrraaappppping dude. Keep safe
More people will buy 2t's if channel's like you make more content about them like this. I know for a fact people like me have been asking you to do a tutorial on how to clutch control properly, but our requests are largely ignored.
I hate lock tight. Only use it when absolutely needed, and I almost never need it. If you want to mess up your torque specs, use lock tight. Best to just stick with the torque specs.
I was a 4 stroke guy and switched mack to 2 stroke. Not racing anymore, just here for the fun of it. i love the 2 smoker machine, awesome to work on, ride on, listen, smell the gas. Just more fun overall.
I love them more than anything! Had kx65,kx85,rm125, than i had a yz450...yes it was an awesome bike and alot of fun to ride, but i couldnt stand the engine braking, the heavy weight, the fact that i simply couldnt rebuild the engine.. so sold it! Now i got a yz250 and man, thats just so much fun to ride...sounds and smells awesome, and with a few pro circuit parts its just simply as fast as a 450 in my opinion! Right now i rebuild it to a reverse restyle Version.. old 2002 plastics and airbox, it looks sick and pretty oldschool for a '19 bike. :)
At equal displacement, the 2 strokes power ratio is 1.7 greater. It means that a 250 cc 2 strokes is almost as powerfull as a 450 cc 4 strokes. If not even.
@@fredgarvinMP and the 4 strokes would get smoked every race. LoL you can engineer all you want, a 250 4 stroke will never put the same fear in your heart as a 250 2stroke.
@@jamesordwayultralightpilot I have a question. new to the 2 stroke scene and just put in a new piston and clutch on a 1997rm 125 and I'm used to riding Honda 450crf's ,600cbr street bike ,and Yamaha ttr230 is it just me or is the power very low for my first time riding a 125cc 2 stroke or is the 450 just allot more power than the 125?
Great video. Love the appeal at the end. Funny too. Yes - nothing like a 2-stroke. Especially a 125. Best time of a racers life is those couple of years on a 125. Nothing is more fun than that.
I am not a dirt bike rider, never had the occasion. But in 1994 I bought a Yamaha RD350R (the last version of the legend). I still own and enjoy her. 2 stroke for life: on road or off road...it doesn't matter. They are the most fun.
You don't stop doing things because your getting older. You get older because you stop doing things. Its the same thing, four strokes are for people to serious to enjoy it or people to old to hold onto a real bike. 🤣
@@vadimkargin3200 I know man. I think this video described the difference perfectly. 4 stroke feels almost grounded , 2 stroke feels loose on the track. I do like the stability of a 4 stroke, but no question if I have 2 own 1, its 2 stroke all the way
@@robertdenton6936 yes agree, rode my buddys 2020 kx250 4 stroke. Bike seemed like on rails, and really smooth. I liked the stability but missed the 2 stroke noice. Was wierd to be honest. 2 stroke all day.

Learned how to ride on my buddies cr85 when I was 12, and got me a crf230f when I was 14 but always loved the 2 stroke feel and sound better than that 4 stroke. Yeah modern four-stroke riders get really upset when my 22 plus year old two stroke bike keeps up with theirs and does everything there's can. 2t for life!!!!!!!!!
Only 2brands?! However I'm pretty sure I'm riding a Beta 2strokes... And there's Sherco, and Rieju (which have previous Gasgas engines) If you're talking about dirt bikes in general, make sure to integrate other category than MX ! Just watch one extreme enduro event and you'll see a lot of these bikes.
Most popular in America is Yamaha and Ktm, that’s probably why he didn’t feel the need to list every single two stroke that exist! Relax! It’s just a fun little video lol
@@kellybrown6988 wasn't meant to be offensive, sorry if it seems so! Just wanted to point out other brands as they are common in EnduroGP and Extreme enduro (and are winning a lot). It's always good to know what exists and not only follow the trend or only see the big brands !
2 strokes are way better for trail because they don't run as hot as a 4 stroke. that's all i do is trail and 2 strokes are by far the way to go, even thou the wr 450 is a narlly trail bike 2 strokes are still better.
@@barakbertoch6690 i agree. In your opinion, would a TI 150 be a decent bike for a 6ft 230lb man who doesn’t care about log hopping, hill climbing or rock climbing? I just ride average south Texas trails
@@BigDaveTALKS given the fact that the TI 150 was made for tackling trails, it is all around a good bike and I personally love huskys. so I wouldn't say no but in my own mind more power more fun but also more difficult, but if all your doing is the easier end of trail riding, then a 150 will be the smarter thing to invest in.
Love this content. I’m looking to buy my first 2 smoker dirt bike, coming from an SV650! I’ve always loved watching motocross and flat track, thanks to my brother!
Keep the Suzuki. I miss mine. But also get a dirtbike. I've never had a 125 2t but my dad had a blast on his. The kx 250 was insane and the KX 500 was retarded. I never rode the 500 but I rode the 250 and tried to race my dad on the 500. Big mistake without goggles.
CC to CC, the 2 strokes still make slightly more power than the new 4 strokes. The 250 2 strokes make just shy of 10 HP more than the new 250 4 strokes on average. But if you're talking 250 2 stroke vs 450 4 stroke, the new 450s blow the 250 2 strokes out of the water, especially low in the rev range. They used to be competitive, but now the 450s make easily 10-15 more HP than a 250 2 stroke.
Again it's not all about Hrsprs the power to weight and the sound and smell of 2 strokes beats the 4 strokes all day. Unless you don't ride to hit jumps then get a 4 stroke.
Who here just loves 2 strokes??
Yes and more people need to get not just into the sport but onto 2strokes, I love 2 strokes I had a yz85 and now I have a yz125 and it's shreds

Same here. Current bike is a 2006 YZ125. I also have an 02 YZ125 torn down into Yamabits which will eventually get rebuilt.
Of all the motorcycles I've owned, my YZ125 2stroke is by far my favorite.
Yz 125s are soooooo good!
wait till you try a yz250
Im 14 and I just got a cr125 as my first bike! Its a bit tall but I'm taking it slow and I love it so far!
2 strokes kick ass! More Cody!
💨💨💨 🤘🏻
2 stroke the best!!!!
agreed!
I respectfully disagree
@@eso6626 no option of disagree.
They where the best in the 80s yes👍🏻👍🏻
In Performance? Nah. I’m not even going to argue that. if they did perform better 4ts wouldn’t be used in almost all professional competitions. But for personal use, they are definitely better IMO. Barley any mechanic visits needed, cheaper to maintain, and quite fun. You could argue you want the best performance, but unless you really are serious in racing, you would barley be able to open up the full potential of even a 125 2t.
Hell yeah! I ride a 2008 Yamaha YZ85, and till this day I still don’t regret it, and I never will. 2 strokes for life.
Hi I’m early for once and im thinking of getting a 2 stroke
You should! They're awesome!
Do it!!!
Best engine ever invented!
Do it. 🤣🤘
You have changed my mind. I’m moving up to a new bike soon and I was going to get a crf150r but now I’m going to bet an 85. Save the 2 strokes!!
2 strokes for life 🤘🏻
Love that Cody reps the 2 stroke 🤙
You did a great job with the vid too bro ✌️
THanks for the support!!
Thanks 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻💨
Proud owner of a 2 stroke Husaberg 250 here. Great video, congrats
I love 2 strokes. I prefer the older bikes since that’s what my budget can afford as well. Currently ride a 2001 yz 250 2 stroke. 7 hours in the rebuild.
Been riding four strokes since 2006 , i bought a 2006 rm 250 and a 2002 cr 250 and i forgot how good 2 strokes feel , iam loving it.
Can you guys make a start video please? I really need some tips for starts. If i can get my starts down, I'll pull away from everyone, and have GREAT races!
I believe they did.... If not it was someone else and the video was incredibly informative 👌
Great idea!! We will get on it!!
Good idea tip try to keep you your clutch in just enuff for you dirt bike to be disengaged
Here it is 👊😎

Love to try a beta 300rr or rx
Billy Bolt is on a 4 stroke now, and still winning.
I have my yamaha DT125 for a while now and man that smell, the power it's beautiful
I’m 14 and I’ve just started riding. I currently have an 85cc KTM big wheel (2 stroke) and I love it. Soon I’ll move up to a 125cc because I’m tall
Thats awesome!
I love 2 strokes the smell the soind and just everything about it
I started on a 4-stroke and always said I would never get a 2-stroke. Now I have a YZ125X and absolutely love it!
How much can a full tank last ?
You forgot to add; number 14 ... locktite is your best friend when maintaining a 2 banger
Yes!! we forgot that one!
Sure if you have an old Ktm. With yamaha maybe not so much. And well, with modern ktm is even less.
New KTMs have a 2 stroke counter weight to cancel out most of the vibration.
I hate lock tight. Only use it when absolutely needed, and I almost never need it. If you want to mess up your torque specs, use lock tight. Best to just stick with the torque specs.
@@EarthSurferUSA My sons TC125 manual specifies the use of Loctite on some fasteners in conjunction with a torque spec
I was a 4 stroke guy and switched mack to 2 stroke. Not racing anymore, just here for the fun of it. i love the 2 smoker machine, awesome to work on, ride on, listen, smell the gas. Just more fun overall.
Imagine a 125 monster cup 🔥🔥🔥
Yeah that's why 250 2 strokes race with the 450, pretty cool
@@Frogcaramel They should let 250 2 strokes race with 250 4 strokes. The four strokes have a fifteen year development advantage.
Love my 14 300 XC....Makes me feel young again.
C'mon man! Ride more two bangers!! ✊🏼
I just bought a restored 1981 CR 250 elsinore 2 stroke and a blast to ride, the power band is crazy
Cody you did a fine job on the video.....can you you guys get your T-shirt supplier to make a " when in doubt..throttle out" T-shirt ?
THanks for the idea!
You could do “2 stroke rippin soil spittin oil
Novel idea 😎
Great video. Love the appeal at the end. Funny too.
Yes - nothing like a 2-stroke.
Especially a 125. Best time of a racers life is those couple of years on a 125. Nothing is more fun than that.

I am not a dirt bike rider, never had the occasion. But in 1994 I bought a Yamaha RD350R (the last version of the legend). I still own and enjoy her. 2 stroke for life: on road or off road...it doesn't matter. They are the most fun.
I'm 39 and have never owned a 4-stroke yet. I've been thinking about it for the last year cuz that's all my friends ride.
You don't stop doing things because your getting older. You get older because you stop doing things. Its the same thing, four strokes are for people to serious to enjoy it or people to old to hold onto a real bike. 🤣
not worth it they are so expensive when they blow up and 2 stroke is just all around better
Don't be like your friends lol. 2 stroke baby
Thanks! I just got a 09 yz85 for my first bike Friday. The first time I got into the power band I almost wiped out.
I own a Honda cr 85 and when I’m at the track it is by far the oldest bike there and it turns a lot of heads when people see me flat out trough corners and over jumps
CR85's haul. Don't buy a CRF150
just got a well loved 1995 cr125 earlier this week for a steal. Learned how to ride on my buddies cr85 when I was 12, and got me a crf230f when I was 14 but always loved the 2 stroke feel and sound better than that 4 stroke. This is the first time in a long time where I can say that I feel like a kid again lol.
Do a video on how to prepare for a race
Good idea!
Me and my crew are keeping it alive almost every weekend. 01 rm 250, 98 rm250, 98 rm125, 01 yz250, 86 cr250, 2020 yz250. Been doing alot of trail riding but hoping to get back to the track soon.
I don’t ever ride a 2 stroke but here I am
I’m never selling my 2001 YZ250. It’s as old as I am and that bike helped me up in plenty hard times.
I really wish Honda would've perfected the CR's. The fact that they abandoned them in 07 is a shame.
Cr 250 was legendary
If a 2 smoke was a person , it would be this guy! #14 , the exaust creates a wonderful cologne for all those behind you !!
Don't forget Beta 2 stroke motocross bikes 2021 they make world championship winning enduro bikes now mx!!!!!
Betas! cant forget them!

PREACH Cody!!! Keeping the 2-strokes alive!
Yeah!!!
Just waiting for my YZ125X to arrive...
Got the 250X, loooovvvveee it!
So glad I decided to get a 2stroke. My 300 xcw is way beyond my expectations.
Theae guys are dope im have to take my son to ride school one day with them @TheMxfactory
do it!!!!
Come visit us!
Oh we will most likely this spring or summer
Yeah modern four-stroke riders get really upset when my 22 plus year old two stroke bike keeps up with theirs and does everything there's can. 2t for life!!!!!!!!!
Only 2brands?! However I'm pretty sure I'm riding a Beta 2strokes... And there's Sherco, and Rieju (which have previous Gasgas engines)
If you're talking about dirt bikes in general, make sure to integrate other category than MX !
Just watch one extreme enduro event and you'll see a lot of these bikes.
TM Racing makes rocking 2-Strokes
@@kennedyracing7527 Yep, totally forgot this one !
Sherco make their own engines, they dont use old gasgas engines
Just got a KTM 85SX 2-Stroke! SOOOOOOO MUCH FUN TO RIDE!!!!
Good job. Tyler may have to step it up a little 😳🤣. I just trail ride but am looking to get a 2stroke. The wr450 is great but a little too much.
Got a 1997 YZ 285 ( Big Bore Kit ) with a Smartcarb, VForce 3, Magura hydraulic clutch, FMF exhaust, etc. She rips !
