Why 2010s Movies Look and Feel Different
Вставка

- The 2010s were a time where a lot of the technology and trends we still see today started, and movies from that decade have a certain look and feel to them. Why do movies from the 2010s look different? Why do 2010s movies FEEL different? Is it just nostalgia or is there something tangible behind it?
In this video, we dive into the topic of why 2010s movies feel like 2010s movies.

I think it's a little tougher to see what defined the 2010's because we are still so close to it. Great video, as per usual.
He is a weirdo he acts like 2010 was 100 years ago hell to me 2010 was yesterday I was 19 or 20
The 2010s ended almost half a decade ago (5 years)
@@BoomTribeEntertainmentWhat? 5 years ago was 2018. The 2010's ended 3 years ago when 2020 started. Like cmon man, this is elementary school math.
The full shift from shooting films on digital sensors instead of film is hands downs the most distinct change of the 2010s. I'm shocked you didn't mention it, it completely changed how all films look.
He mentioned it in his 2000s video.
I kinda wish movies were still made by film rather than being shot on digital sensors. I don’t know, but a lot of 90s, 80s and 2000s movie quality gives such a cosy feeling, even if it is a super serious action movie lol. I’m not the biggest fan of how movies nowadays look so crispy clean and sometimes…unsaturated? I don’t know maybe I’m just seeing things.
80s nostalgia started in the 2000s: GTA Vice City, VH1's "I Love the 80s" trilogy, Rock of Ages musical, Michael Bay's Transformers, Turtles Forever, Angry Video Game Nerd, etc... While you credit it to people turning 30, others have already theorized a 20-year rule w/ the 70s being nostalgic towards the 50s, the 80s towards the 60s, 90s towards 70s, and so on. Despite 90s nostalgia also existing in the 2010s (ex: 2017's Power Rangers, Captain Marvel, Girl Meets World, etc...), it's evident that the 80s is still being exploited in the current decade: Top Gun Maverick, Ghostbusters Afterlife, Wonder Woman 1984, etc...
Personally I want the 2000s being exploited one day.
@@nicestoriesnottherealstori3006 There's the new Avatar: The Last Airbender show. Ewan McGregor & Hayden Christensen reuniting in the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries. Though 1990s nostalgia is still in effect w/ the likes of X-Men '97 & That '90s Show.
Can't wait for 2033 so we can have “Why movies from 2020's looks different”
🤣
Great video. I enjoy these a lot. The 2010s are a strange decade of movies for me. A lot of great ones... Blue Valentine, Uncle Boonmee, Unstoppable, A Separation, The Tree of Life, The Turin Horse, The Raid, Warrior, Moneyball, Amour, Samsara, Holy Motors, Fruitvale Station, Only Lovers Left Alive, Pacific Rim, The Grand Budapest Hotel, It Follows, Clouds of Sils Maria, Interstellar, Listen to Me Marlon, The Lobster, Mad Max, Love, Sicario, Raw, Neon Demon, Personal Shopper, Get Out, Elle, Good Time, Mandy, The Rider, Phantom Thread, Annihilation, Cold War, Upgrade, Climax, Free Solo, Shadow, Mid 90s, The Farewell, Pain & Glory, Parasite, Atlantics, Uncut Gems, Queen & Slim, The Nest (and so many more) and then it really starts to fall off in the last few years and a decade dominated by IP. It kind of felt like it could be the last decade of great movies mixed with commercial ones.
Yeh, so many great films! I really hope it's not the last great decade, I hope there is a revival. Possibly a revival of the mid budget film?
Thanks for commenting!
christopher nolan alone could’ve had his own segment in this video
Something I vividly remember from the 2010s is shaky cam and lightning-fast cutting in action movies, e.g. Taken 3 and Alex Cross, shaping up to become the norm, just for John Wick to come along and kill that trend instantly.
It definitely was remnant of the Bourne copycats, I do think that style can work under specific situations
@@Malum09 Tbh I've only ever seen it work for Saving Private Ryan. Even in the Bourne movies it came off as kinda cheap
Major yes to the TV eras!
a video about the 2010's tv shows would be good i think, alot of shows i really enjoyed were from them, really liking these retrospective videos keep it up!
This was a great analysis, though I wouldn't mind this video being "revisited" in another 2-3 years. I'm with those who say that it's too soon to tell what gives the 2010s its own unique signature as a decade, at least in full. But these were all decent points to touch on. Perhaps there's more that can be explored and fleshed out if this video does get redone later.
That's a good idea!
The 2010s movies in regards to every genre, just really a more upbeat but also with cliches, especially horror, I mean seriously, just something about 2010 movies compared to the 2000s or 90s really, just had a right amount of things thatseem entertaining and memorable
Great video guys
Yes, please do the 2010s tv shows
Very nice video!
Thank you!
Side note: I think romantic films still had a small footing in the 2010s, albeit nontraditional ones, like Carol
well yeah compared to now.... romance movies have been dying a lot since the late 2010s.... now in the 2020s, romance movies getting wide theatrical releases pretty much never happens 😔
A lot of romance movies being made today no one really talks or care about at all so that’s why there’s a lack of romance movies getting wide theatrical releases unless it’s something THAT good.@@popmusiclover1000
Great video, I would LOVE a separate vid on the Golden Age of Television. Please, give me it. Right in my eyeballs. As soon as convenient. Thank you.
Some other things to add:
1. Different Filming/Cinematography techniques - A lot of films have a variety of shooting style. With both independent and successful films employing techniques such as entire film being in 'single take', or a harrowing/claustrophobic filming style like in Son of Saul or James White
2. More experimentation - Debatable, but in 2000s, I think there was a certain 'niché' types of films that were considered acclaimed by critics but in reality were pretty much Oscar bait. Whereas in 2010s, I think the industry started being more experimental, and open minded. So, like Wes Anderson, Jonathan Glazer, Alejandro G. Inarittu found more success, and A24 sort of helped to get unconventional cinema n the mainstream.
Solid channel. I'll subscribe.
I’ve only ever had 2 memorable 3D experiences. I had Sharkboy and Lavagirl on dvd as a kid and it had 3D prompts in the movie that made it fun to watch as a kid. Recently, I saw Avatar the Way of Water in 3D and I believe that’s the definitive way to experience it. Most of the time though, I think it’s just a waste of money.
Can you next do 1910s movies or 1930s movies, those are my favorite era of film.
I’d love to see him do 1950s or 1960s movies
I think "Elevated Horror" was the actual type of Scary movie that surged in the 2010s.
Fury Road felt like an 80s and 70s movie to me
I am so interested in a TV version of this video
I am very burnt out on comedy being inserted everywhere, specifically the Whedon style shit. Totally done and can’t stand it. It was fine when it was limited to mcu, but as is with all things, it’s become ubiquitous because people liked it. Also cinematic universes, i basically only wanted those things in the mcu, but now since it’s everywhere I don’t even want it there so much, but it’s kinda necessary for that brand at this point. I definitely don’t need it anywhere else though. Another exhaustion is the overuse and over reliance on CG and green screens! For fucks sake, they need to use more practical effects! That Industry is so burdened and overworked that the cg looks worse than it should, given our tech advancements.
Can’t wait to check back on this channel in 2033 for the the video about 2020s films
😂
Need the television video about the 2010s
Another person pointed it out in the comments here but I feel like the late 2010s was the start of the end of the romance movie genre. Now you rarely ever see a romantic movie getting a wide theatrical release. Back in the 2010s which really isn't that long ago Nicholas Sparks had a new movie pretty much every year, the fault in our stars was a huge success among many other movies. it's in my opinion that romance films are dying really fast I mean romantic comedies do have a place on streaming apps now, but romantic dramas are really fading away. 😞
Yes I would love to see a video about TV.
I knew you'd do it
I know it's not a new concept of books becoming movies but a lot of YA books (mostly trilogies) got adapted into movies in 2010's. I think it's due to the success of Twilight (2008 - and yes I know it's late 2000's but the 2010's really banked on the hype surrounding it [both positive then turn negative]), and the Hunger Games (2012). Most of these adaptations would also have love triangles you couldn't escape from these films. They started out as these major blockbusters you would see in theatres then dwindle down to something you would just find on streaming services (Netflix did a good chunk of these and still are).
Marvel killed 2010s cinema.
Luckily, that course seems be derailing so that's great.
Y
@@jefftakesdscakes30because Marvel is awful trash that has run its course…
lol nah they did not kill the cinema in 2010s phase 1 2 3 were still great until after endgame in 2019

The Lighthouse is NOT a horror movie. It's a romantic comedy and I'll die defending that belief
No 3d was just an annoyance, especially since you usually weren't really given a choice in the matter.
Yes. Finally 🎉
I'm still sold on 3D. 3D Blu-rays are still being made, the movies are being released in theaters in 3d yet, TV don't have 3d as a feature anymore. It's ridiculous.
Probably gonna be the same thing on this decade is over
14:42 um no, it was not a stride in the right direction at all, it's shit actually
Idk man honestly if you look at some of the horror movies that came out in the 2000’s you’d be surprised!! Don’t get me wrong the 2010’s at the start had a bunch of good horror movies for sure!!
Barbie isnt a comedy movie. It is a merchendise movie. Just like Transformers, Lego movie and TMNT.
But unlike those movies, Barbie was much more self-aware and was actually well-made because Greta Gerwig is a good filmmaker (also, who said IP-based movies can't also be comedies?)
@@IVUSERI'd argue that (at least the first) Lego movie is pretty good. But otherwise I agree.
unpopular opinion: 3D doesn't suck, it's just that studios converted movies that were shot in 2d to 3d and so the experience we got was garbage and that is what killed 3d
Nah bro. The diversity one was a L.
Strong case for the 2010's being the absolute worst.
True
In my opinion, the 2010s were the worst years for cinema. Things are improving slightly now, although the fact that you’re talking about them as an era in history makes me feel old.
Really? That's also part 1 of gen alpha era
Ehh I feel it's gonna get worse now, some 2010 movies were pretty good
@@KGBSpyGeorgeCostanzathere is still some good coming up
@@jefftakesdscakes30 like? Barbie and Oppenheimer did rock though, I am on the agreement train with that
No the 2000s were the darkest the 2010s and the 2020s are the best
A24 is starting to hit a dry spell in my opinion.
They definitely aren’t as consistent as they once were (I guess the cons of becoming bigger), but they’re still releasing good stuff once in a while. They produced the show Beef that released on Netflix this year which is definitely worth a watch.

The man is out of his damn mind if he thinks 2010 was a long time ago i was a grown ass man in 2010 i was 19 to 20
Your out of your mind if you think movies have changed in 12 to 13 years you said 2010 movies have not changed a bit since 2010 now I will say movies have changed a lot since 2004 since that was the last good year for movies
This is a video series we do where we go decade by decade. And 2007 is widely regarded as one of the best years for film.
Ok boomer
I don't know a single person who owns or ever owned a 3D television. I guess I just don't know any millionaires or any people with IQs below room temperature.

I was thinking of subscribing, but 14:50 made the decision for me. I'll pass.
i dont think movies from the 2000s and 2010s look or feel any different really
Everything up until 2005 felt completely different from 2006 to 2012 to me at least. I think its due to the lack of color grading and the type of movies produced in that era. However from 2013 to present, I can really make a big distinction other than any thing after 2020 is post covid I guess.
TL;DR: There have been four eras since the new century. 2000-2005, 2006-2012, 2013-2019, and 2020-present.

Outside of the first three years of the 2010s that's a decade i do not miss.
Maybe it’s because I grew up through the 2010s, but I think it’s the best decade. I watched almost every genre have standout movies through that 2010s elevate the gold standard of its predecessors. Think of all the great sci-fi movies we got like Looper, Mad Max, Her, Inception, 2049, Apes Trilogy etc.
