Film vs Movie: What's the Difference?

If you’ve just entered the film industry or the production industry, and you’re one to say “movie” frequently. There’s a good chance you’ll find yourself reprimanded. There’s actually somewhat of a public battle when it comes to the use of the terms film vs movie. And while some will say they’re both one in the same, anyone in the professional world of filmmaking will almost certainly disagree! But what’s the difference between film vs movie and is it really so much to fuss about?

To me, movie is an American term for a more commercially intended product. Film is anything that has an intent to raise and deal with issues of characters in a story that has been created for viewing. I would use film as the more general term, with movie in use as regards, for example, many summer blockbusters. So Marvel or Star Wars would be movies, whereas more serious fare would be film. Sometimes films like Oppenheimer may be a crossover point.

Indeed, movies are aiming for maximum box office and films are aiming for awards recognition so they don't even compete for the same thing.

This whole debate is pretty silly, as “film” is really just something shot on celluloid film. Modern “art” movies aren’t “films” because they were shot digitally.
