Johannesburg city, which is located at 1753 meters above sea level, has not faced a snowstorm of this magnitude in 11 years, AFP reports. This event is exceptional in its intensity. We are in the southern hemisphere and it is the southern winter, but in our regions snow is rare, even at 1,700 metres. This Monday, an amazing episode hit Johannesburg and the entire Gauteng region after a freezing night. The last recorded snowflakes in this part of the country date back to 2012. There are many homeless people in this South African city who try to protect themselves as best they can from the cold, but the snow makes it difficult for them. No sitting or lying in the damp. They gather around cans in which they burn wood, papers, well, what they find... In stark contrast to children in parks who throw themselves on the ground and improvise snowball battles or try to catch flakes.
Just imagine poor people who live s in sharks they will freeze to death the government have to house this people as soon as possible .the weather is gonna get worse coming year s we are embracing global warming people should forget about farming
Snow is abnormal in SA. In the past, there are winters where it never happened or happens once on the highlands and it would be very thin snow that didn't wholly cover the ground in white. However, due to the changing climate (climate change) it has become more and more and more frequent and it is covering a wider area more and more. If things don't change, in the next 20-30 years, almost the whole country will experience snowfall every winter.
The way we build our houses for example, they are not insulated for harsh weather because our winters were not very cold and our summers were not very hot. But in a few years, we will have to rethink about we have to build for better insulation.
Snow is not abnormal in SA, I'm from the EC and it snows in places like Queenstown, Elliot, ect, not every year but it has snowed in the past. Let's not be ignorant guys. The only abnormal thing here is that it's happening in spring.
What is the point of weather scientist and disaster management South Africa? I will always say that having people who can not plan ahead will be the death of this country. This is not the first time that has happened in the country and clearly with past experience we should have trucks that will clear the snow in advance or a total trip shutdown. Even the companies that dispatched there goods did not anticipate what level 6 snow meant....the greed of moola.
