Africa is great settling point if one wishes it to be. However, for us, there is definitely a "beyond". More than anything, the journey to Africa is more like an exploration of Self than a destination. Being in Nairobi we can say now for certain that it is sufficient as a home base to launch more of exploration from.

These conversations are gems, thought provoking and insightful!
Yes, religion and political ideologies are the main dividers anywhere in the world. In Kenya as in most of Africa, there's another layer that supercedes the two; Tribal and cultural identity! As such, growing up and schooling in Kenya even though I profess Christianity, I used to view all other religions with indeference as long as they didn't encroach on my cultural beliefs.
I sat in both Christian and Islamic religious classes to have a feel of everything and I emerged out the richer in terms of perspectives to others' beliefs.
I bet by now the educators especially in Kenya would stick to imparting knowledge within the prescribed curriculum without going overboard with their personal religious beliefs.
Fun Fact: Children In Freedom (CIF) Schools in Nakuru (170km North West of Nairobi) is the only Afrocentric school in Kenya and Africa that cultivates free thinkers devoid of religious biases, foreign stereotypes etc.
    Ramadhan Kareem 🙏

She's right, it is colonization foolishness that some of us here in Kenya keep agitating to eliminate. Kenya need to remove religion from schools. Mohammed looks like he will give up on the Africa project at some point..

Primary school level, all religions are taught but you get that basis of your own religion from your parents. Secondary school goes a little in depth to all religions in religious studies. At university you narrow down to a single religion. Having said that, if you choose a private school based on its founders, then you will experience a single religion to be the only religion offered in the main. Muslims at our primary school were exempt from Christian religion studies, Christians were not exempt from all the other religions (Worldwide historical and current) as taught

Ramadhan kareem family.....wish you could find some Kenyan Muslim friends and enjoy the various types of food (swahili) at iftar...I'm catholic and my Muslim friends always invite and share loads of amazing food with us during this season. Just like our Hindu brothers and sisters share Indian sweets and delicacies during diwali (festival of lights).
Side note have you looked around for Muslim schools there are quite a number....not sure of homeschooling but I can suggest Light Academy or Aga Khan Academy come to mind. Nova Academy is also a good option They have the option of Kenyan and British curriculum. Roselyn Academy teaches U.S curriculum but it's Christian based.

In regards to celebrating western holidays in kenya i dont necessarily consider it a bad deal, kenya is a country made up of 54 tribes from three african people groups Bantus, Nilotes and Cushites, these communities considered themselves independent nations pre colonization and differed drastically in cultures, beliefs, religions etc, the nation state of kenya was created by British and was intended to be a settler colony like south africa so the British brought a lot of settlers who created kenya with such foundations, post independence kenyans adopted things they thought were good from the colonial experience starting with Christianity apart from regions which already had islam like the coast and north eastern somali regions, they also adopted the western holidays like, in my opinion i don't find it as negative, kenya's modern national identity has a lot of infouences from different sources for centuries, swahili language itself has a lot of arabic influence same to foods, there is indian influence in foods as well

You may never find everything working for you here in Africa. But I'll tell you for FREE that nowhere else in the world will African people find peace & harmony but Africa. Other places i.e Malaysia or Thailand may seem friendly for now but still got a risk of turning against Blacks who are moving there. One negative incident & same racial animosities against Blacks as elsewhere in the world could easily get triggered.
Africa is a work in progress, it is a continent emerging from colonization, poverty, ignorance & still trying to redefine itself.
Africa will only be built by Africans including its Diaspora. Africa is a place where Africans should seek to mold so that it works for them. Africans must think of building themselves their own paradise here on Earth. It is the only land Blacks can be truly free....
Ironically other races i.e the Chinese, Indians, Europeans come to Africa & build thriving communities. What of Americans of African decent? Why're they not hardening themselves to say it got to work for them no matter what? Are we a weak people or what?

There were Christian, Arab (Muslim), Portuguese, and Spanish colonizers. There is no particular religion where one could say “this religion belongs to the colonizers”…..all the colonizers represented the various religions and practices (except for African Spiritual Systems, Voodoo etc).
The cities you have been choosing are Christian (Kigali, Nairobi). Mumbasa had the Muslim teaching and curriculum you probably would like….though u may not favor the city.
There are many other Muslim cities and countries in Africa that may give the Muslim teaching and curriculum you like (ie Senegal, Gambia, Dar es Salaam, etc).
Wondering if you like the Muslim teaching but more of a Christian-like environment? Thinking about how you said u missed the Christmas lights and songs etc. and are choosing predominantly Christian cities.
Whatever the case u don’t have to fall under any labels at all (not even the Muslim identity). Rooting for you in whatever choices you make. Best wishes in your journey.
(Note: Black Americans that are Christian do not believe in a white washed version that u see on billboards in Ghana. They believe in the biblical description of Jesus having bronze feet and skin = black. Also, that belief in Christ is something Europeans actually got from Africa - not the other way around. During biblical times those were Africans, people of dark skin). It’s the white washed version from colonizers that is wrong. .

Soon that Asia too will turn around against Black people. It only takes a couple of negative incidents for Blacks to recieve it from other races my friend.
The only place in the world Black folks can be completely free & happy is Africa. Africa is not perfect but work in progress. It is upto African people to build themselves a paradise in their own true homeland. Asia was built by Asians so what about Africa? Who will build Africa?
Black Americans relocating back to Africa need to come with a mindset of building instead of comparing Africa to either the west or Asia. Ironically Asians & even Europeans are moving to Africa to build their own thriving communities. Black people are instead looking to live as parasites in other people's lands..

Just like the black church playing a pivotal role in black Americans history the religious institutions in Kenya also played a big role in development especially health and education, a big percentage of private schools and hospitals are owned by religious groups especially churches thats why you might find religious preferences in private schools or private tutors curriculums but public schools have a choice of religious education between christian, islamic and hindu religious education, there are also Islamic schools in kenya so treat that as an isolated incident not the standard kenya is a very religious tolerant country

Maybe you can ask that your kids not be included in any religious classes. Our bill of rights is new and under progress, not everyone knows how to apply them. My guess is that you may also have an issue with some of what is taught in Islamic schools. It is difficult to have religious debate in Kenya because it has been instilled in us that you have to have faith, you don't question.

Hello Muhammads. Christianity in Kenya as far as I know was first brought about by missionaries like Dr Livingston who was Scottish and Islam was first introduced to Kenya and East Africa by Indian traders when they came over. Someone, please feel free to correct my memory. So I don't understand why it was shocking to you that Christianity is strong in Kenya or many African countries for that matter. I would say that is one good thing I thank God those missionaries did to introduce bibles and God to us because even if they taught it the way they wanted to teach it, we later were able to search for ourselves from our great grandparents and parents and ourselves through the Holy Spirit and we no longer see it as a white man religion because God is not a religion and is not white either. He is just God. His supernatural words can be preached and taught by anyone regardless of color. Those white missionaries some were on a mission to spread the gospel of Jesus and they did their part in whichever method they used. It turned out to be a major blessing for Africa because we then discovered God for ourselves the right way. Kenya is majority Christian most likely 70%, but has maybe 20% Muslims, and the other remaining 10% is Hindu, and then others. But more importantly, we all get along for the most part. Yes, a few times but rarely you will find something like what has been going on with some Muslim leaders in Marsabit county who are not happy with Christians planting churches in those towns which I also don't understand what the big deal is. It's like for example if Christians were mad if Muslims built Mosques in the middle of majority Christian towns. lolest. I would bet you Christian leaders would not be mad at that. Infact they would look for ways to evangelize. I don't get why those Muslim leaders were mad. We all worship who we want to worship that is why Kenya allows freedom of worship. So we should not judge each other because we all have our opinions about other religions that we do not ascribe to. So when you say you were bothered or shocked by finding Christianity in Kenya, Uganda or some African countries, I am shocked that you are shocked. lol. Africa they say is where God lives and miracles still happen, unlike the Western world. lolest. We should all just get along and let God be the final judge. In Kenyan schools many of them have Hindu, Muslim, and Christian religious education so it's up to you where you desire your children to learn and grow spiritually. Just saying.

Shocked by the western methods of celebrating the holidays. Easter bunnies, Santa Clauses, valentines are not apart of any religion so this was shocking to see.

    • @jaynewanjira3541
      @jaynewanjira3541 5 місяців тому

@@TheResidentialTourists Aaaah, now I understand. Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. Okay, I get it. Yeah, Easter bunnies at one point in my life growing up was not a thing. Christians mainly celebrated the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ and did not focus on Easter bunnies like that. Maybe the rich folk back then who had been to European countries or USA had that mindset which was not many in the 70s, 80s and even 90s I dare say. So that is interesting to hear. Valentines Day I am sure most Kenyans celebrate mostly love just like the rest of the world and nothing more even though the meaning of it is wild. I am don't think Kenyans go to the depth of finding out the origin of Valentine's day which was from St. Valentines priest who used to marry couples and kind of made Feb 14th to be a lovers day so he could change it from the original Pagan worship day or something. Santa we have always had since my existence in the 70s and yes that was a European white thing. From the days of colonization, it goes without saying some of those things settled in our forefathers' mindsets. But mostly was for the kids, not adults. Christmas though is and has mostly been set aside to celebrate the birth of Christ even though yes, he might not have been born on December 25th. But it's the thought of celebrating his birth that matters, now having grown up and realized. I am sure God would not be mad being celebrated. As long as we don't sin I think he would be fine with us choosing a special day throughout the world just to focus on only him. Speaking from a Christian perspective. Not sure if Muslims celebrate Mohammed the prophet. I wonder. Do Muslims celebrate the great prophet?
