This could happen to your aorta if you do not stop smoking

  • An aneurysma of the aorta is a bulge of the large body artery, which gradually grows and may eventually lead to rupture of the aorta. ( I wanted to fix my bike tire and found this often repaired tube. I thought it could serve as a good model )
Smoking is a major risk factor for aneurysm formation. Active smoking is associated with the highest risk of aneurysm progression and rupture. Risk of abdominal aortic aneurysma (AAA) increases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the duration of smoking. The risk of AAA is increased by 7-fold for those who have smoked for more than 30 yrs and by more than 12-fold for people who currently smoke more than 20 cigarettes per day, compared with never-smokers. Each year of smoking increases the relative risk of AAA by 4 percent. With smoking cessation, AAA risk declines slowly over time. Thus, smoking cessation is a necessary component of risk reduction in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm.

If aneurysm's are found in time, they can be repaired by vascular surgeons or via an endovascular method (EVAR). But of course it is better to try to avoid their development.
