One thing I found really helped me make my crossovers feel more natural once I was able to just step one foot over the other was to focus less on the leg crossing over and instead think about pushing the other leg underneath me. So like if my right foot is crossing over and hovering in the air, instead of stepping forward onto it, I push my left foot more underneath me so that I naturally want to place my weight on the waiting right foot. Hope this helps anyone else learning!

This video was recommended to me and I'm glad it was. Last Saturday I attempted to do crossovers after seeing people at the rink doing so with ease. I tried three times. The first time I didn't get it and was just wobbly, the second time I fell, and the third time I did it but was very close to falling. Tuesday of this week, this video was recommended to me. Today, I went to the rink and followed the suggestions of this video and I got it immediately. In fact, on my third attempt I felt it click and how comfortable you're supposed to feel while doing a crossover. Thank you for your clear instruction and breaking everything down.

@@Dirtydeborahharry If you have Skate Mates (or could rig one up) and a tripod with bendable legs, you could attach the camera to one of those and have him wheel it around while filming the "whole rink" but still being able to do the close-ups to focus on you and the movement. I got my tripod on Amazon for only around $15! The legs are kind of short on mine, but it works. Not the most expensive thing, yet it has saved me from a lot of - what would have been - shaky videos. Thank you Deb!! Started skating last Nov, 2023 after being off of skates for about 50 years. It was rough going. Your lessons on how to stand and balancing on one leg with and without skates I didn't think of. And I used to be in skate dance competition back in the 1950's. Thank you so much for your help. Oh, by the way, I just turned 83. The reason I'm rickety on my skates is because my right knee is minus some cartilage. I favored it for so many years not realizing my legs were getting weak. I didn't realize how weak til I tried to skate for the first in 50 years and I fell a couple of times that took 6 weeks to heal. But, I decided not to give up. You helped me realize I needed some learning tools. Thank you for showing me what to do.

Where were you in 1987 when I was "walking" along the rail at the skating rink? Lol, I was so mad at myself but I got better quickly and used to be really good. I'm trying to get more into it because I miss skating and need the exercise, thanks SO MUCH for the tips! The "your butt is too high" advice was awesome, I think I'm more self conscious now and less instinctive about my center of gravity.

In 1987 I was a sad skater lamenting the rise of the roller blade and wondering why the hell everyone seemed to be skating on them! LOL! Anyway... so happy you are back and ready to roll. Basically you have a new body that is working with the old brain. The old brain is giving directions to the new body as if it were the old body :) Make sense? Now it is time to retrain yourself and become a new skater who will vow to never stop rolling :) Let's get rolling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is how it starts! LOL I'm in Ohio, though...but 3 of my girls and I go every Saturday at the very least (though it's not surprising to see us out there 3 or 4 times a week). They've started inviting friends - some who know how to skate, some who've only been on skates a handful of times, and some who've never been on ANY type of skate in their life. We've spent many sessions helping those less steady.
I started posting on Facebook when I was going. Our little group used to take up a small booth (4 people per booth, just me and my girls) - now, with the girls' friends AND mine coming - we need at least 2 tables (6 per table)...if not 3! LOL An old friend came with me...all of twice, remembered how much she loved it and promptly ordered her own skates...a friend of hers started coming....and my "middle" child's boyfriend likes to come, so this past Saturday, he convinced his mom to come (old speed skater from back in the 80's, like me), now she's already looking into skates for BOTH of them. One weekend, we had around 22 people show up! It's addicting. :)

Hey Debra! Just wanted to tell you, because this might make you smile, that I went skating yesterday and got to practice a lot of what you’re teaching, and I’m proud of how my crossovers are coming along! I’m still not quite getting the hang of t-stops, my back skate just seems to grind instead of stopping, but I’m gonna try again the next time I go. Just wanted you to know I’m making progress because of you, so thank you!

Really love your videos. Startet skating a few months ago at the age of 46 and it often feels very scary. But I found a society of artistic roller skaters in my hometown. Although I learn much slower then all the kids I really enjoy it and your videos often help me for not asking to dumb questions ;-). Still working on my balance. But with your help I am sure, that I will improve soon! Thank you so much!

These videos are the perfect blend of directness, informational, entertaining & wit! Thank you for your insight and knowledge. That being said, I am extremely right hand, leg and foot dependent so my right crossovers are absolutely perfect BUT when it comes to the left crossovers, you would literally think I just put on skates for the first time. It is soooo embarrassing, because I just do not trust my left side to save my life! lol

I love that you said you don’t want us to get all over mechanical that you want us to get to the flow stage as soon as possible. That makes so much sense and I’m happy I’m on the right track. After skating about 4 or 5 times within a month and half as an adult I am now researching on UA-cam for tips and boy is knowledge key. You are an incredible teacher and u are gonna help me become the bomb ass skater I know I am. I already skate with so much rhythm and funk. I just need a little technicality. That was the realest thing you said “get to flow stage ASAP”

I'm going to start trying these. I love that you use a lot of repetition with what to do. It helps so much because when I go to do a skill, I can hear your voice telling me what to do. I've been working on a transition and it wasn't so smooth, then I heard in my head, "head turns shoulder, shoulder turns hip, hip turns feet."..
Then I transitioned!!! I am not 100% on them, but they were so much smoother when I heard you in my head saying that!
So I think I'll be able to start working on these!!
I've tried other videos, out of curiosity, and you are the queen of teaching... you definitely have a gift!

I was taught crossovers all wrong, and have been doing them badly for a couple of months now and I couldn't work out why they weren't working for me. Now I know.
