      Ok. I just turned 50(gasp!) And have taken up skating again with my daughter. Thank you thank you, THANK YOU! for your real world videos ! I just watched the first 3 and I'm in love with them. I can't tell you how much more confident I feel even just sitting here watching them. I can't wait to go out tomorrow and skate and fall! Without injury and without fear! Keep 'em coming!

      I sprained my wrist roller skating around the same age. I have been terrified to roller skate ever since. Upon watching deb’s videos and planet roller skate videos, at the age of 19 I’m going to go buy a pair of roller skates today and going to the rink for the first time in almost ten years! Never EVER give up!

    • @2danniegrl
      @2danniegrl 4 роки тому +6

      I've been roller skating since I was 3. I did artistic skating when I was young, and took classes. Then I did speed skating and was just a rink rat. At age 23 a kid slammed into me while I was backwards skating, and then 9 months later I was playing a game and reached for the wall, but miss judged the distance and got off balance falling to break my other wrist. It took me a little bit, due to surgery. But as soon as I could I got back out! Now I'm 38, and have had a few more injuries (no more from skating thankfully), but I just decided to give outdoor skating a try.. NEVER GIVE UP. I hope your daughter can hear me say I am still very nervous at times because those 2 broken wrists were awful, but my love for skating overrides the fear! I just take it SLOW ever since.

    I’m 57 just started skating again after 25 years last year, I mostly skate outside and always wear my pads. They’ve saved me so many times!!!. Sometimes falls just happen unexpectedly and because of my pads I’m still skating. I’m not uncomfortable with them and not embarrassed to wear them.

      I was like you last year . I took lessons at a rink ,hoping to eventually go outside. Than in oct I broke my wrist, even though I had pads and wrist guards. I really want to get back on the skates, but I’m nervous because I fall a lot

    • @lonwheels9197
      @lonwheels9197 5 років тому +12

      Kathy Bolj I’m so sorry, I know that nervousness, there’s so many things I want to do that I’ll probably never be able to do but mostly I’m just happy skating. I hope you heal quickly.

    • @lonwheels9197
      @lonwheels9197 5 років тому +12

      Kathy Bolj I guess you’re probably all healed up by now since it was last Oct. I fell a lot before I started skating and have never had great balance but when I fall I seem to instinctively go into a barrel roll which seems to help distribute the weight of the fall. I actually think that skating has helped me improve my balance or possibly my awareness of the ground. I install windows and doors with my husband and I have tripped over and fallen on so many things but noticed this last year has been practically fall free on the job. I hope you are able to get back into skating again it’s such a wonderful feeling rolling along.

    I have discovered that my roller skates are really time machines. I can go from a happy, upright position onto my backside with no time having been allocated to the falling down process! I have also been knocked into the middle of next week when playing roller derby. On other occasions, I believe time stopped for a few important moments where I levitated long enough to think, “Oh .... pick a cheek!” before the inevitable happened. Thank you for another excellent video, Deborah.

    idk, I agree about trying to fall on a soft spot, but like I still wear my knee, elbow and wrist guards at the skating rinks. If I'm outdoor skating, I also wear my helmet and mouth guard. Coming from a horse back rider learning how to skate I love that you made a dedicated video on how to fall because in riding one of if not the first thing you learn is how to fall/emergency dismounts... I feel like the more you practice falling and gaining confidence in how to fall without injuring yourself actually helps you fall less often because there less of that initial panic that makes you overcorrect yourself

    Some advice to any skater. Check the floor first. Skate slow for a few times around the floor, looking and checking the floor for anything out there. I have fell by hitting a small piece of clear hard plastic. But, you are right. Falling is a part of skating. If you are afraid of falling, you will never learn anything new. Never be embarrassed for falling. Everyone does it. But check that floor out first! Something very tiny and hard to see can drop you like a bad habit.

    HEY! That's my line!!!! "If you're not falling, you're not skating!" LOL SO many people scared to get on the floor..because "What if I fall?" That's what I always tell them. Learn at the rink (even wood is "softer" than concrete or asphalt!)...wear whatever pads you feel necessary to feel comfortable and less scared...and get out there and skate!!! :) Once you're more confident, keep the pads and hit the streets as well as the rink. Just DON'T put your hands out when you hit the floor. Too many broken fingers happen as others run over them!

    You ladies were spot on with the whole learning edges and the process of learning basics. I was and still am that person who sees someone do something and say, "oooooo I want to do that." So I began watching the person's movements intently only to fail a bunch of time. I eventually get it, but the route to getting it is not the safest or the best. I have been skating since I was about 4 yrs old, but never took skate lessons. My mom's motto was, "If you want to learn you got to get out there and fall." Finding this skate community and just now learning about edges has been very eye opening and now I am going back to basics and I am enjoying myself learning these and my tricks that I can do become so much cleaner. This video really helped ease some of the fear and trepidation of learning how to skate. So I’m going to think of it like ‘learning how to fall’ as much as it is learning how to skate. I was kinda thrown to the wolves as a kid and never shown how - so I was terrified and falling, abs just remember clinging to the wall and crying a lot.. so I gave up when I like six.

I had 2 surgeries on it and injections and now after 3 years of physical healing, I need some emotional healing. The fear of hurting that knee is real, it's very fragile and one fall could just distort it for good so the bum method is way better. You give me hope that there is a way to direct a fall from catastrophic to okay and even cool. Thank you for mastering your craft. It's so beautiful.

      @@letthetrumpetsound7893 Id say at the age they said, that pads are very much helpful and could really save their body/bones/etc.
      Yes, falling correctly indoors is very important, but being more matured does leave them far more vulnerable to a single fall even if its practiced as safely as possible!

I have loved the process of taking it slow and discovering how it feels to progress slowly in everything I have learned so far; getting to know how to turn slowly and then progressively becoming faster and more efficient; learning the footing and positioning takes time. I started skating again last year at age 49 and always wore gear but after this video I decided to try your strategy. I don’t fall often but was glad when I managed to get low and fall on my soft side.
    The problem is that there are too many situations that happen too quickly such as when the rink is crowded and people crash into you or recently my skate lace came off the hook and my wheel caught so I went down directly on my knee so personally, I’ll keep wearing gear just like I wear a seatbelt … not because I’m relying on it to stay safe but because I love skating and want to improve my chances of avoiding injury! I’ll take gear over ice packs any day!

    I started skating at a really really young age(like 4-5, my skates were so tiny!) And I LOVED it! I used to skate all over the house just doing chores like putting away toys/dishes while practicing. Eventually as I got older I decided to start skating outside on tar and ended up really injuring my right leg(it still causes me pain everyday), but a few months ago I went to my first rink and bought myself a brand new pair of skates. I'm ready to try again outside and I'm so thankful to learn your tips on how to fall without getting hurt again!
    Still probably gunna use knee pads just so I don't cause any more damage to my bad knee but I feel so invigorated to get back into it and find my love of skating again. Thank you!! 💜🥰

He ran into me hard. I had no time to prepare for it. I fell on my left side and elbow. I also hit my middle finger on my left hand causing it to instantly swell up. An employee came over and checked on me. I got up and carefully made my way to a bench. At 62 years old I don't heal as quickly as I used to. I now wear elbow pads and knee pads. When the rinks closed down all I had were crash gloves with soft pads on the palms, handy to go down on your palms when low to the ground and doing extreme turns like speed skating down hills and stuff, some concrete is just too much for bare hands...I sometimes do a bit of a hop to get out of a serious falling back situation at high speeds leaning forward into a speed skating stance or a sort of lunge with one foot forward and the other back on the brake after getting both skates really light or aerial.

    The first time I ever went rolling skating, I fell on my leg and broke it. The second time I went roller skating, it was maybe six years after the leg and I only skated on the carpet. The third time I went skating, I fell flat on my butt and badly bruised my tailbone. That was 2 years ago. I went skating last night and while it took me two and a half hours to build up the confidence to get out on the rink, I had a great time when I did. I tried my best to remember the tips from your video on skating for beginners and it was such a big help. I really struggle with turns, every injury I’ve gotten has been from coming out of a turn. The dropping down thing really does work. I would find myself stumbling and then would remember to drop my hips and it stabilized me right away. This video was so helpful! I didn’t fall once last night and now in the future I’ll know how to fall safely.

I self-taught myself to roller skate when I was young, without protective gear. I have purchased wristguards, as I work on PCs and type a good portion of the day. But I haven't invested in knee/elbow pads yet, or a helmet (still debating comfortable options). Meanwhile, I really appreciate you posting such a video that reminds you not to rely on the gear to protect your fall and you can use your body for support in many safe ways.

    As a Musician cant afford to get injured..but I absolutely love to quad skate with tall swiss wheels..when wheels are taller and not as wide falls may come more often when a ppl..are first learning...also skating outdoors can be even more dangerous..so I NEVER Skate without my BONE Krushers..they velcro onto hands..also "bone krushers" or "bone breakers" come with "knee" and "elbow" protectors...A friend didn't want to wear hers as she didn't think she looked kwel...she broke her wrist and two fingers(outdoors on concrete)..less hurtful indoors..but can still get injured..I fell once attempting a higher jump outdoors on concrete I had my gear on..I stood up and couldn't believe didn't even get a scratch..this was a high long fall down a short concrete embankment...
    Outdoors ppl even wear helmets..my motto not breaking a bone is kwel..Its great to learn to land but during some moves may not have time to use that drop move taught on this video...good to know it in case your rolling slow enough to use..but if not..I say be smart and strap on those "bone krushers"! Peace Out!!
