    Your playing is sooooo clean man. It's quite apparent when you see someone with proper fundamentals compared to someone who memorises a song by muscle memory. Not saying memorising and practicing a song until you can play it is wrong but knowing the theory makes the process much easier and quicker and also you can do improvs with good understanding of the songs.

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  5 років тому +1

      Well put my friend, strong fundamentals allow you to pick up anything and start going at it a lot sooner and with more ease. I think I'm lucky because I've broken down so many of these prog songs for my students, you guys and myself. It truly helps me be more clean and fluid haha. Thanks for your gigantic compliment !!!

    Wei! Incredible video as usual. I absolutely love this song. I had a few quick questions for you about it:
    1) The part you're talking about at 0:36 (the hip-hop groove part), could you think of that as just straight eighth notes at 84 bpm instead of the normal quintuplets? Or is it more complicated than that?
    2) You said you'll be doing more on this song in future videos, will you be going over the groove right after the triplet part, with the keyboard solo? I think that groove is so cool, I think he's accentuating the first and fourth quintuplets but I'm pumped for your video about it.
    3) I made a post on reddit about the time signature change in this song, I thought you might like to read it: www.reddit.com/r/plini/comments/99r6st/plinis_flaneur_the_commutative_property_in_music/

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  5 років тому

      1, 2) Oh yes you can think of it as 8th notes, but not straight, all the upbeats are played a tad late, hence they sound like they're late by a 32nd note. I'll break this down in another video because it's similar to the groove in the keyboard solo section. I think that groove is so cool too, it's pretty much been around in Hip Hop since the 90's and played a lot by drummers like Questlove and Chris Dave. And I am curious whether it was Plini's idea or Chris Allison's idea to put that in the song.
      3) Hey I just read your article, I wish I could have seen it 3 months ago, would save me some time figuring things out hahaha, but it's interesting info that you provide there especially pointing out that the change happens at 4 minutes. I'm going to do the rest of the song anyway so I might reference your article(you'll be in the credits if I do) from a mathematics perspective. I've only thought about it from a musician's perspective so it's really interesting to me to see it described in a different way.
      Thanks for your support Chris!

      @@ArtOfDrummingHQ Thanks for the reply man! That's really cool that each hit is a 32nd note back, it adds a cool laid back feel to the groove. I think Plini has love for hip hop music, if you listen to the mashup he made of Kendrick Lamar's Poetic Justice and his song Away.
      I'm glad you like the article too, I really love this kind of stuff and like writing about it. I'll look forward to your video and a shoutout would be cool! Keep up the awesome work man.

    Awesome! I have had a thing for quintuplets and 5s for the past few weeks so this came just as needed :) I have especially been jamming to two of Dylan Ryche's songs: "A Thank You In Fives" and "Evie". Just a guy playing classic guitar but super fun to jam to! I'll be turning it up a notch with Flaneur this weekend. Thanks! :)
