Dune: A Brief History of Space Travel
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 кві 2018
- In the Dune universe, the Holtzman effect is a scientific theory that relates to the repellent force of particles on a subatomic level. Its discovery would lead to many advancements in technology in the Dune universe. Glow Globes Spencer's the Holtzman Shield and the most significant space travel. Using the Holtzman engine grants the ability to fold space and allows instantaneous space travel from one place in the universe to another.
Space travel is extremely important in the evolution of humanity, it has allowed them to populate throughout the known universe. For thousands of years, the spacing Guild maintained a monopoly on space travel, and their process was extremely expensive. Their pilots were the only ones who could navigate through space, using prescience brought on by extreme amounts of the spice melange. Without them, the extraordinarily complex mathematics involved in producing reliable physical projections of such events would only be possible with thinking machines, which were prohibited by the Butlerian Jihad.
It can be assumed that at least some understood that eventually, the guilds monopoly on space travel would end. The fringe worlds were always pushing the boundaries of their technologies. This is suggested as early as Children of Dune.

I had the Dune Encyclopedia and spent a lot of time pondering in fascination the extraordinary, peculiar life of Ibrahim Holtzman. It was less than a year ago that I was shocked to find out that the Dune Encyclopedia had been declared as non-canonical by the Herbert estate.
Indeed, but as far as I know Frank Herbert gave it the Green light, otherwise it would not have been published. To be honest I find the religious terms quite annoying talking about Dune. Canon, heresy... Pffffff just the opposite of Herbert's message. I have just read random entries, but can't wait to read it whole, it will be soon or at least I hope so. Therefore, keep on enjoying if you like it and fuck the rest.
That is sad to know.
Frank Herbert himself never said it wasn't so why would you care?
As far as I am concerned, Brian Herbert and his Herbert Estate can go screw themselves. He is pissing all over his father's work, he is disrespectful to the Dune Universe. The Dune Chronicles were never his to rework or to screw around with.
thats because brian herbert wants to make money off sequals and prequals.
Thanks so much for reconnecting me with dune. I had read it when I was 14ish and so much of it was lost on me. Re-reading the whole saga at 30 has been an eye opener. Cheers!
So basically drug abuse will make interstellar spaceflight possible.
Will make Interstellar navigation possible* FTL and the Holtzman effect are already properties of nature in the Dune universe. It's just that 1 in 10 ships without proper navigation will be lost.
It made safe instantaneous space flight possible.
Pretty much
If you're using a drug for a specific use you can't call it drug abuse. Go color.
I'm sorry but it's not drug abuse. Its substance use in varying degrees.
I wish you would do audio books. You have a good voice. It's time consuming but you'd sound better than most audio book readers.
Idk man in the last year I’ve listened a decent amount of audiobooks and almost all of em had some pretty damn good voice actors. Dune especially had some good ones. Same with the Jurassic park and lord of the rings books.
I'd love to see dune audio books with videos like he uses in his videos.
really did my man scott brick dirty with this one
I have listened to all the audible book readings and they have amazing actors but you would be a definitive edition.
@@theonlybass8947 Yeah but compare to the older Connor O'Brien reading… Mr. O'Brien isn't a bad reader, but he's only got four or five voices in his register. Two female characters, one of which sounds more like sniveling than speaking.
Comparing these to the Scott Brick et al. half-dramatized version is night and day.
Quinn could be quite the narrator if he wanted to be.
Currently on my third Dune book: Children of Dune, thanks to you my brother. It's captivating and I'm always happy seeing notifications from you. Keep up the amazing work. Space Travel is extremely interesting to me though I still don't understand it very much.
I don't think anyone does, so you're not alone! These videos has rekinled my love for Dune. Thank you, IdeasOfIceAndFire!!
Herbert’s writing style started to wear on me by the third book, but it was worth reading still because his books are so rich with ideas. Just brilliant stuff.
21st Century Afropolitan Stop when you've finished with the original Frank Herbert books. The others done by his son are pure rubbish.
I might be rereading God Emperor. The best book ever. So bittersweet for me.
There's nothing to understand. It's fantasy. Frank himself didn't understand it, he just made it up.
These have become a really nice surprise when they're done. Thanks for putting the effort in and doing such a great job.
The FTL drive is great. You can even use it to charge your Zoltan shields.
Dude, where's my spaceship?
so awesome! I've spent the last 25 years in the dune universe ( recently including the extended series ) .. it's a blast and your videos add to my experiences... thank you
I find it ironic that if it wasn’t for man merging with a machine, the Holzman Effect wouldn’t have been discovered. Great video.
I’m currently about halfway through Chapterhouse Dune. This is turning out to be my favorite sci-fi book series of all time. Thanks for all the great Dune videos.
Really love these Dune videos. Please, please keep making them!
I like that you open a Dune video on space travel with a shot of the Colonial One from Battlestar Galactica. Loving these Dune videos!
Getting ready to binge your Dune series. I really like the way you narrate.
These Dune lore videos are fantastic. Your voice and delivery are well suited to the subject and themes.
Your Dune videos are perfect, thank you! :)
Youd think the incentives to ignore the Jihad and develope thinking machines would be ubiquitous and constant and the first person who did would be incredibly powerful, leading to secret AI research and arms races.
Any such endeavour would require enormous resources and influence to prevent discovery. In short only members of the Landsrat could attempt it, but the power structure that gave them their influnce and riches was conditioned on the current system not being shacken, the Guild travel monopoly being one of the pillars of that system. So while the Nobles were ok with fighting for power and backstabbing ech other when convenient, no one was going to risk turn the table upside down and getting nuked with atomics.
One of the enduring ideas in Herbert's Dune universe that is very different than ours is that human cultures can "learn their lesson" permanently.
Herbert hinted from the beginning that the Ixians had never really ceased tinkering with computers in secret. Few people were allowed to travel freely on Ix because the entire planet was basically engaged in secret research and development. They were pathologically suspicious of outsiders being spies. Herbert suggested that this was not solely due to the risk of theft of intellectual property but the fact that most other Houses distrusted them and considered them strange and even outright immoral. What were the Ixians hiding? Richese was also a technological powerhouse but they were not strange and secretive like Ix was. I think Herbert meant it to be confirmation of this that it was Ix that first reintroduced computers after Leto ll's death.
Are you referring to China by not doing so
the power of religion: the incentive is strong yes, but people believe it's wrong so they don't. The Jihad can't exactly be "ignored".. I think that's the point.
You have really great voice and it fits perfectly into this dune series. I'd love to hear you do an audio book!
Love the Dune series so far
Am I the only person in the World that actually enjoyed David Lynch's 1984 film version?
Mr Glew Its how I was introduced to the Dune universe as a young boy and I was spellbound. Still enjoy it as an adult...so...you are not alone
Thank you mate.
I get the feeling it was attacked by the pc squad
I love the quirkyness of that old flick. Though I have no idea where they came up with the weirding module. Hmmmm asaka! Too funny.
I liked it very much. The only part I did not care for was the very end and the rains. I wish they had not done that.
I know I come into these comments and give people a hard time about the extended (garbage) universe. But these videos are fantastic and I hope you keep doing them. The Dune universe has been a huge influence on my imagination for a very long time so thank you! Also, play Warframe. It's not based on Dune but it has a very heavy influence on the ascetic and story.
This video is one great production.
Great be background information... Very calming and easy to relate to the books Ive read since the 1992 onwards... Ive been following for the past 3 years ....I've read every title,
I read these back when I was teenager along with books like the Foundation series ... I'm thinking that now is a good time to re read Dune; You make it glow with that which is "only" seen through child like eyes.
Congratulations. Awesome work.
It would also be good if you covered information on other planets like Caladan or Geidi Prime.
I hope you get a narrating gig soon. You have the voice for doing documentaries on Nat Geo or some of type of program.
I dig that this video on the Holtzman Effect opens with a shot of Colonial Heavy 798, later renamed Colonial One. I still miss Battlestar Galactica.
I'm enjoying this video series, especially for the concept illustrations from many sources. Wondering, though, how many of the more ambiguous illustrations have nothing to do with the Dune universe.
The parked spaceship at 3:28 in particular - looks an awful lot like Peter Quill's ride from the current Marvel _Guardians of the Galaxy_ movie franchise. 😁
I like the fact you cover both the Dune encylopedia and the extended universe material
Officially the Dune encylopedia is NON canon.
david james , even then it would be wise to cover all Dune material no matter of their official canon status. Some do not consider Brian Herbert's works as canon either.
I am simply not a fan of mixing the Dune encylopedia and Brian Herbert's materials simply because they are so different and contradictory. And if material form different sources is referenced, it would be nicer to mention which is canon and non-canon. Perhaps i am being too pedantic here though.
News becomes history, history becomes legend, legend becomes myth. We will never have an accurate account of the true history of the Dune universe.
It's fiction, please relax.
Gotta say - I love how you guys use those fonts from the book series cover in the presentations.
Great work!
Awesome as always. I hope to see a video on no-ships.
These are good refreshers after having read the whole series. I don't think it needs a movie/series but that'd cool anyway. It's an amazing series. ConSentiency and Destination: Void series are both worth checking as well.
Hypothetically interstellar travelling without spice or thinking machines could still be possible, but it would be much more expensive, both in resources and sacrificed lifes, because of how unnervingly dangerous it would be. It would be a gamble, but a few ships would make it. No one would do it voluntary of course, but it could still be possible, technically spoken.
Damn you have a talent for storytelling. Amazing
I haven't read all the Replies for this topic, but I seem to recall two different-but-concurrent narratives concerning interstellar travel in the DUNE universe: folding space (traveling without moving); and actual FTL travel in which the limited prescience of spice-mutated Guild personnel was required to prevent collisions with stars and other celestial objects.
In Brian Herbert's and Anderson's books-The Tachyon Net!
Thanks man
I want a stellar Dune series so bad!!!
don't put that out there it will be filled with 16 yr olds and boring millennials...thinking they can act deep and intelligent.
I think it's a tough one to cover. You have to start with a 16 year old Paul and go from there...
Your narration is wonderful! Never have I heard a voice so perfectly fitting the Dune saga! The "Expanded Universe" books where my first taste of fandom disappointment as a teen...
So cool, definitely like this content.
I enjoyed this very much
Outstanding
I would love to hear more about the smugglers on dune.
I would really like to see a video on the machine crusade.
It should be pointed out, that in the Dune EU, while Holtzmann developed the mathematical equations it was based on, it was Norma Cenva that developed the Space Folding idea and technology, with the financial assistance of her husband Aurelius Venport who introduced the Spice Melange to the Imperium via his pharmaceutical company. Holtzmann had nothing to do with the development of the Space Folding Ships. She also developed the Glow Globes and Suspensor Fields. Holtzmann did develop the personal shields though.
It should be pointed out, Dune EU is non-canon
@@Dr._Atom
It's canon unto itself.
If you believe Frank Herbert's son, much of it is based on notes his father left behind. 🤷♂️
@@Dr._Atom There is nothing to contradict it.
Please do a series on The Foundation Trilogy
I love that Frank doesn't feel the need to explain everything. It just is. Every good sci-fi writer knows it's the human story that's the interesting bit, not so much the stage.
Opening with BSG ships is a bit distracting. Maybe you could have gotten away with just Colonial One, but adding both the Viper and Raider was too much.
Well done...
great vid
the "extended" universe, I was not a big fan of for the prequels before the original Dune series in the timeline. but I did enjoy them rounding out the story after chapterhouse of dune
The reason why I don’t like the theory of the holtzmen affect in the expanded universe is not because I don’t count them as canon. I just don’t believe time is truly a strait line. This might be a little controversial, but I think that, like planets, the rest of space and time are also slightly curved. But it’s just on such a large scale we can’t notice. So it wouldn’t be easily folded. Just my thoughts.
Wish I could fold space time.
I believe in you!
I wish I could try the SPICE.
George Lucas took alot from Dune and the Hyperdrive systems they use in Star Wars is basically this same concept different naming BUT THAT IS WHY SOLO DID THE FASTEST KESSEL RUN EVER by CALCULATING the BEST FOLDED SPACE trajectory in Space(distance)TIME of PARSECS.
Rejoice! You're already doing it.
Just by having mass, you're folding spacetime, that's the origin of gravity.
I wish I could fold a fitted sheet.
I know the movies have the 'folding space' thing. But I read all the books, and it's been many years since, but from what I remember, space was not folded, or travel instantaneous. The navigators were able to see into the future enough, to determine which obstacles to avoid, so the ships could travel at max speed, and not hit anything during the journey. Or did I miss something in the books?
Keith.C; OMG! Yes! That's How I Remember Reading It Too! And I Recall It Took Weeks, Or Months To Get To Another Planet..At Times, By The Time Of Arrival, A Coup Had Taken Place, Or Someone Was Too Late To Change Some Event! Also, Mostly Dignitaries Or The Wealthy Could Afford To Travel Or Get Off Planet I Seem To Remember There Was A Manifest For Everthing Put Aboard! And It Was Pre-Planned Down To The Navigators, Which Was Usually Two.. It's Been 8 Yrs Since I've Read A Dune Novel"The Houses" So I Don't Remember Which One That Info Was In. (The Young Man Was A Stowaway) On Board I Think, A Brian.H Book! Thanks For Allowing Me To Share!
That's exactly right. If it was just about calculating the numbers to successfully navigate folding space a mentat could do it.
cool stuff ^^
Incredible narrating.
I wonder if Herbert’s world had the concept of “intellectual property”? And if so, how long did Holtzmann’s patents last?
as a kid i dreamed so hard about about mankind traveling through space just like we do with cars in the new millenium , totally sci fi cartoon infested ... but instead we got bribed with internet ... so sad
YOU- - - - ARE GOOOOD.
Thanks. More on the Norma chatacter please! :)
Frank wrote one line about norma in God Emperor, there is nothing more to see there
The purists might explode. She's one of my favorite characters of the KJA books.
Not enough about magnificent work of Norma Cenva!
YES!!! The Dune Encyclopedia!!! The one TRUE canon!!!!
The holtzman effect It's a good literary device
From what I gather about non-Holtzman FTL drives, at top speed it would take 67 years to go from one end of the Milkly Way to the other. It's basically Star Trek-like Warp Drive.
Great Narrator's Voice, Quinn!
Was that Colonial One from BSG in the first shots?
Ok I’m seeing vipers (heavily modified) in vid later so I’m sensing a theme....
Ixians "invented" machines that could navigate interstellar travel. There used to be thinking machines that could do this, but … who knows what a thinking machine looks like now?
The Ixians know.
Did they invent something, or did they re-introduce something?
It was mentioned in Chapterhouse Dune that Norma Cenva invented Foldspace even though everyone thought that Aurelius Venport discovered it. so yeah Brian Herbert got it right
This Guy Is making me want to read the saga
The original Holtzmen explanation was much better. In fact I was of the theory that Holtzman would end up being the great enemy. We'll never know....
fully agreed...
Question: have you ever read any of r Scott bakkers prince of nothing series? He was heavily influenced by dune and I think you'd enjoy it
walterkane great series. The Prince of Nothing and Aspect Emperor series rank just behind Malazan Book of the Fallen.
walterkane thanks for the lead on an author I've never read. always looking for good sci-fi
Silas Clayton thanks for the tip! Gonna look him up right now.
He tried, but Norma finished his work and he took credit for it. She didn't care as she realized spice was rhe key
LOVING your Dune editions!! I’m a big fan
of ASOIAF too but I just started reading Dune and am obsessed! I watched the horrible movie lol I wish they’d remake it into a movie series, it’s an incredible story and deserves to be on par with ASOIAF, LOTR, Harry Potter, etc. Dune is the grandfather of most of those
There is a Sy-fy miniseries from around 2000 that was somewhat better than the '84 movie, giving allowance for TV budget special effects. The sequel miniseries, which compiles both "Dune Messiah" and "Children of Dune" under the latter title has James McAvoy in one of his early roles, playing Leto II.
I haven't seen the first miniseries but I have the DVD set of the CoD miniseries. It's reasonably good.
Though I wouldn't call Dune grandfather to the fantasy series - I do consider LotR to be the grandfather of all modern fantasy though, considering that Dungeons and Dragons took a lot of inspiration from that and it has filtered down into other following books.
LotR I think pre-dates Dune, but I also don't think it's fair to count sci-fi and fantasy as the same thing (even if they do share a section in bookstores). Fantasy harks back to past eras, sci-fi looks forward into the future. They can cross, with sci-fi takes on fantasy themes, and stuff that has both space travel and magic (Star Wars is basically a classic fantasy story in space), but there are a lot of types of both that exclude the other.
Mimi Sardinia I’ve heard about the tv series but have no real interest to see it, ill read the books and if a movie series comes out I’ll watch that, the story is too big for only a couple movies and a tv series doesn’t have the budget that movies do to do it justice.
Also, you’ll notice in my last post I said that I consider Dune the grandfather of MOST not of all time or anything, and in that statement’s defense, a book series that’s over 50 yrs old, that won the 1st Nebula award and almost won the Hugo award in the same year? That’s like the triple crown of sci fi writing, I think Dune deserves a grandfather spot he may have influenced as much at JRR Himself
It is rumored that there's a new Dune movie in the making, maybe that one will satisfy you more than the 1984 version, which was definitely better than the 2000 one.
I always say that HBO should have used the money wasted on Game of Thrones for a proper Dune series instead. The result would have practically been the same, except for the more futuristic sci-fi parts of Dune that could actually require the audience to use some brain matter for the purpose it exists.
Vortimer of Kent ooh I hope so 🤞 On the whole I enjoy tv shows more than movies because my fav thing is watching the character growth. Some stories though are better told on the silver screen. I was really enjoying GOT until they surpassed the source material in season 6, it felt like they didn’t really know what to do with some characters and so their answer is to give them a wicked death, woo woo heh
Keep up the good work with these videos, and I appreciate that you cover both the originals and EU despite the raging of fanboys.
Even though the Guild holds a kind of monopoly on space travel, what happened to any previous ships, that didn't require a navigator and spice? You would think that there might be some Star Trek like warp ships
This channel is wonderful!
Dune is a hard read for me and this gentleman helps a lot.
Those prequel books apparently mixed things up and changed canon.
I've held Dune titles closely since University 1992 and now I'm 48 working in Computer Science's....Long live the fighter's 🤓✨
Its funny that after all the good service Holtzman provided they still destroyed him.
Kind of like Alan Turing.
or the guy who invented plastic
So this is where the Macross crew decided to name their FTL drive.
Mr. Quinn, one question I always wondered. Okay, so the spice allows the navigator to have prescience and thanks to that they can see where they are jumping... but how the first humans got to Dune on the first place? With machines doing the jump calculations? by mere luck? It sounds like the Guild was established after the discovery of the planet Arrakis, right?
The older FTL engines were used to expand initially, with calculations being performed by good computers (but not thinking machines). Holtzman engines allowed point to point FTL, but had the risks. After spice and its effects were discovered on Arrakis, the Guild was able o perform predictive Navigation with perfect success rate.
My wish is that they start to make a series of movies ala starwars....would be great!!!
Interestingly the Holtzman effect sound very similar to dark energy.
And Zero Point :-)
very brief
I know someone with a Doctorate, that is kept in a convenient leather wallet that has assured me on numerous occasions throughout my life, twice by a different person, that time was wilbly wobbly, and timey whymy with a few fix points where the plot demanded it, but never an A to B progression.
He then usually steps backward into the tool shed and makes weird sounds with his mouth between saying things like it’s smaller on the outside and wondering where potato man got too.
I’ve seen him around town driving a beat up 1980’s DMC, he’s been saying how he made a big deal a few weeks ago with some out of towner’s, don’t know what that’s about.
what is the context of this comment?
FTL must have existed for interstellar travel at some point before spice was discovered, otherwise how did mankind ever discover Arrakis in the first place?
Maybe accidentally found out wormholes in our solar system 😅 (just like in Interstellar Pilot games)
So even though instantaneous space travel is common enough to keep the spacing guild busy, it's so incredibly expensive that the average citizen is most likely going to live their entire existence on a single planet or star system much like we do now.
The events in the movie relating to the movement of entire houses to and from Arrakis I take it as an extremely rare event. The Harkonens occupied Arrakis for centuries and it is later said by the Baron that the operation involving the attack on Atraedis cost 60 years worth of income from spice mining.
This limited or restricted form of space travel is another element which sets Dune apart from other science fiction stories set in a distant future of galactic colonization.
So in Dune, is humanity still in the Milky Way Galaxy, or have they expanded to other galaxies?
Honestly you deserve to be in a Dune movie for all the effort you put into your video’s
I started to read dune... But I found Lot of the names a bit flowery and foofy... If that makes sense.... Like a lot Of use of Sci fi sounding space words. When they started using qhizak haderak etc (apologied for typo..) it was a bit laborious. Asoioaf is lot more accessible. I'll give another try. You've made it sound lot cooler
Damn Brian Herbert....Shai Hulud will judge him
But no, see, he has these outlines that Frank "wrote" so its all OK... FAAAAAART
The basic construct of the "Legends" is not that bad. A proper series could pick that up and fix all the errors you guys see in it.
Frank must have left a hell of a lot of notes:)
I guess the legends don’t bother me that much, they can be ignored or written off as KJA is a hack writer. It’s when they started tying that schlock into real Dune... TRIGGERED
10-4 Copy That
What is the name of the song with the flute?
So if the navigators were the only ones who could fold space, then how did CHOAM get around?
The navigators don't fold space, they are just making sure you arrive your destination. You can still fly without navigators, but it's a risky business because one out of ten flights fail and disappear forever.
@@Langkowski Ahhh shit, I just looked up the wiki and it correlates with you.
I thought they did......damn.
Oh well.....not like a fan fic is supposed to be strictly based on canon anyway.
Stupid question new to the Dune neighborhood , but could someone tell me what FTL stands for as in the FTL drives.
MAD N BAD Faster Than Light.
Thank you Mr. James. I wasn't thinking.
So it works the same way as the ship engines in Banner Of The Stars.
What's the soundtrack?
the holtzeman drive is more a fundamental fact/theory than an actual piece of machinery. because of the nature of sci-fi. by the end of the series, covering thousands of years, no better mechanism for traveling through space is discovered. navigating is the issue.
For the origins of 40k look to the dawn of the 1980's and a range called Laserburn...it will guide you.
The Holtzman of Dune
