And that scene where he has the inability to go down the tunnel and the villain notices it I mean dude You see that's the one thing that they don't do in scary movies anymore is that the hero suffers from an affliction and then the killer notices it and exploits it like he could have killed the main character right there but he found more pleasure in his torture that he couldn't get through the tunnel

It's very Hitchcockian, per: Vertigo. DePalma's genius is that he takes these tropes and builds on them in with a very personal signature: it's not just appropriation. I consider him and Hal Ashby as the most creative of the class of "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls," as titled by Peter Biskind

When i was growing up, There’s this channel called Cinemax on our local satellite tv, which i was lucky enough to have access to and get to enjoy these type of neo-noir, erotic-esque films(even if it’s heavily censored) and those weird ass films such as brainscan, the thing or even that human eating plant movie(pretty sure you guys get what i meant) which they don’t normally show on the tv especially because i live in Malaysia, whose the most professed region is Islam. Roughly only 1 out of 50 people knew such film exist.even if they do know, there’s a high chance it’s not their cup of tea. I was looking forward to this review, since you mentioned that you would be reviewing this at a later date (mentioned in your "Schizoid" review way back when!).
I don't know what it is about Craig Wasson, but the first time I'd really noticed him was in "Carny", and I saw him not long after that in "Nights at O'Rears" and I was drawn to him pretty quickly; the only reason I even watched "Nights at O'Rears" was for Louise Hoven who really stood out (for me) in the horror film "Jennifer" (1978). Like you, I was disappointed with his performance (or character) in "Schizoid"; and I remembered you mentioning that you were big on him in "Body Double". Then I happened to see his interview with Bobbie Wygant for "Body Double", coupled with your mentioning that you were going to be reviewing it at some point, then I quickly got around to watching it. I got the impression watching him in that Wygant interview, that he was about to make a big jump in his career. He never did though (IMO), but you can see the potential.
I even watched "Rollercoaster" (Wasson's barely in it) and "Four Friends" recently, just to watch most of his earlier stuff (not including his TV spots).
I know that people say that he looks like Bill Maher (and he does), but he reminds more of a blonde Bono mixed in with a young Breckin Meyer. It's probably a weird comparison, but I think that Wasson picked a lot of movies that don't quite match or showcase his abilities, which is how I feel about Ron Silver. They both have great range, but both actors can get stretched in the wrong directions, or get boxed in to things that cap off their talent. They have also both in a number of less-than-stellar movies (and TV shows).
I will watch "Body Double" again, hoping that maybe the next time, Deborah Shelton survives! That walk...
    Great review as always!

Craig Wasson is quite underrated but I guess he is just too guy-next-door-looking. I think the first time I saw him was in Ghost Story (17 year old me thought he must have had some balls to film that death scene).
When I watched David Schmoeller's 1982 The Seduction (Morgan Fairchild, Michael Sarrazin, Andrew Stevens) for the first time, I thought they had taken some "inspirations" from Dressed to Kill (thematically and stylistically) and then realized, that De Palma had 'paid back' by copying a car chase scene in Body Double, when Jake spots Gloria leaving her driveway and following her to Rodeo Drive.

I've noticed that a lot of De Palma's films end in tragedy, and frequently center on men's inability to protect the women in their lives (casualties of War being the most disturbing example of this). He also loves to start a film either inside another film, or focused on a TV or monitor showing something else. Sisters, Blow Out, Scarface, Body Double, Snake Eyes, Mission Impossible, and Femme Fatale all do this. His films are all very much about the act of watching, and this one in particular.

Great movie and review. Two points: DePalma wasn't never meaning this to be "hardcore" (no studio would ever touch it) however the sticking points were the frank sexual language from Griffith, there was much more sexual simulations of Holly Boddy in film which Wasson watches but the main one was his first casting choice of porn star Annette Haven (her and DePalma were friends) to which at that point Columbia said absolutely not. DePalma did keep her around the set at times as a unofficial "technical advisor" lol Interesting note the MPAA gave him more guff on the drill murder than the sexual content. Go figure.

Annette Haven told she had no idea who he was when she was contacted about Body Double. He basically went counting down his filmography with her and she was "No, haven't seen that." until it came to Carrie.

Let's say when I was a kid. I fell in love with that brunette that did get killed and I thought she was hot and I was you know maybe at the ripe old age of eight you know starting to get a little curious about women, my dad just bought one of those illegal hot boxes on Long Island, and then you know you see her dancing in front of the window and you got to understand this is before the internet boys and girls we're talking two words: side boob
And then I saw the killer with a driller and I'm like look at his face look at it You never see it like this movie honestly for an 8-year-old was everything and introduced me into horror movies I know it's not a horror movie per se but when you see a guy with an effed up face with a drill and that one scene where he drills her through and you see it come out the ceiling
    I was sold

Craig Wasson is a really good actor. Ghost Story and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 are amongst his credits. I'm grooving some Dr Palma now. I'm thinking maybe Sisters. Haven't seen that one in awhile.

6 months late, but yeah, I absolutely love this film...despite the massive plot hole of where the hell is the real wife supposed to be while her body double (the porn star) is doing the striptease dance? That's the only thing that bugs me about the film lol. I guess it's implied in the film the wife is having an affair with someone (whomever she was on the phone with at the strip mall). So, I guess maybe the husband planned the striptease show for nights he knew she was going to be out with her lover? Still...it takes a big leap of logic and a huge suspension of disbelief to believe he was able to plan it that perfectly 😂. I still love it though.
