I have to say. The original was a classic, extra spooky with the black and white. But Dawn set the standard for Zombie gore! Tom Savini, a legend. The helicopter kill was awesome! Gray, blue, green, whatever... It was the Dawn of the zombies in color.
Glad I’m first to comment. Been waiting a LONG time for you to review this one. George Romero is the GOAT and Dawn of the Dead is a landmark masterpiece that deserves even more attention. Thanks for reviewing it!
Sorry to double post but yeah the friendship between Roger and Peter has such a fun dynamic. Me and my brother used to quote the "Hit and run?" "Hit and run." exchange between the two all the time.
George A.Romero worked with Fred Rogers directing shorts he checked out the flick to show his support for up-and-coming filmmaker George Romero, whose first paying job was with everyone's favorite neighbor. “Fred was the first guy who trusted me enough to hire me to actually shoot film,” Romero said. As a young man just out of college, Romero honed his filmmaking skills making a series of short segments for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, creating a dozen or so titles such as “How Lightbulbs Are Made” and “Mr. Rogers Gets a Tonsillectomy.” The zombie king considers the latter his first big production, shot in a working hospital: “I still joke that 'Mr. Rogers Gets a Tonsillectomy' is the scariest film I’ve ever made. What I really mean is that I was scared shitless while I was trying to pull it off.” Romero went on to create his zombie empire several years later, and he says Rogers was complimentary. "He came and loved it. He was always a huge supporter over the years." In fact, said Romero, Rogers called Dawn of the Dead “a lot of fun.” he supported Romero’s projects.

I literally watch Dawn Of The Dead (1978) nearly 3 or 4 times a year. It's one of my favorite 70s films & in my top 41 of all-time(because I'm 41 years old). Been on a Andy Sidaris binge the last week, starting with Malibu Express (1985) & ending with Return To Savage Beach(1998).
I was looking forward to your review. Dawn is my second favorite zombie movie just behind Night and probably my second favorite horror movie ever. It's nice seeing someone give Romero the same amount of credit as guys like Carpenter and Craven.
I watched Dawn when I was 8 years old, scared the shit out of me, and it was my favourite zombie movie (Day has now taken that spot). Peter and Roger are still my two fav characters of all the zombie movies, amazing actors, they had great chemistry you can really feel the friendship. Even tho these were the worst looking zombies, with the exception of a few, it works for this movie and I still look past it. The music is spot on for me, it was fun when it needed to be, cheesy when it needed to be and down right terrifying when it needed it to be. Plus Tom Savini was just a rock star in this lol.
78’ Dawn of the Dead is probably my top three horror movies EVER!!! (The other one of the three is Day of the Dead!) I could watch these movies on a loop forever. 🤘
With this film, Romero set the new standards of the horror genre. His vision of the world was rather pessimistic and that's why he made zombie films like this, with the strong social message.
Excellent review, i love this movie. Definitely gets a trapped on an island rating from me. It is one of my top 5 favorite horror movies. Jaws, Halloween, Alien, Dawn and The Thing
I don’t know how many times I’ve seen this. It used to play the Midnight Movie circuit in the Dallas area where I grew up. Rocky Horror, DOTD, American Werewolf, and Heavy Metal were my favorites.
This film is one of my all time favourites and has been for 25 years. I discovered it as a teenager late at night on TV without even having heard of it before. Blew me away.
#RomeroCarnageMagic!! I love the "mood whiplash" in this movie. The second you get relaxed or think things are ok, some horrible shit starts happening. Great review, my friend
Even though the ad for this film said NO ONE UNDER 17 ADMITTED, theaters let kids like me in with adults anyway. I loved the film but it gave me nightmares for years. Hell, I still have them.
At first I thought Drum Drums what took you so long to see this movie. Then after further thought I realized this movie is not played much or if ever on cable TV (including the movie channels) Because quite often I run across a good movie by accident on one of the movie channels. This classic cannot be reviewed enough in my opinion and you always do a great job.
I just recently got the same 4k release of Dawn of the Dead. I had to because it is my mom's favorite movie and I remember it fondly scaring the crap out of me as a kid when the woman got bit in the shoulder. I heard the reason why this film goes out of print is because the person who owns the rights took a massive loss trying to make a 3D version of the film and instead of cutting his losses he apparently charges distributors an insane amount of money which leads to lack of distribution. But I'm so glad to have been lucky enough to get myself a copy after staring at that 200$ blu ray prices for years lol.
Thank you for this review Lee I havnt done any reviews on my channel yet but this one would be one that I would definately be intimidated to do because it is my all time favorite horror. I would want to do it so much justice. Thank you for giving dawn a unicorn rating its definately worth it. Awesome, epic review Mr. McCoy you nailed it

Day Of The Dead 1985 Is actually my favorite zombie film of all time and I consider It a masterpiece. I usually go back and forth between Night and Dawn for my second and third favorite zombie film. Great review!! I love this movie and the remake surprisingly...speaking of remakes have you ever reviewed Savini’s remake of Night of the Living Dead ?
I will never forget when I first saw this movie many years ago on VHS 📼 I couldn’t think about much else after since how amazing Dawn of the Dead is. Should never have been remade. I was tempted to go after that new 4K UK release but I could never replace my Anchor Bay Blu Ray I got signed by Savini & Romero himself. Great review, brother. DOTD 1978 is miles better than the BS 2004 remake. The zombie apocalypse had just begun so the makeup effects work to fit the timeline here where they hadn't started to rot yet like in Day of The Dead
Dawn of the Dead deserves a Shout/Scream Factory release. Even better, a Criterion Collection release. It's one of the most important Horror movies of all time. 💯🧟♂️🧟♂️🧟♀️🧟♀️🧟🧟
Second Sight release already exists. Just import it from the UK. 4K is region free but the bonus disc is locked to region B so you'll need a region free player to watch the bonus content.
Great review as always Lee! This absolute classic of zombie genre is probably one of the most influential horror films ever made, i dare to say it's even one of the best horror films ever made. One of the best examples of what we got thanks to this film is not only more good zombie films which it inspired, but also some great zombie video games, like entire Dead Rising series. With some changes, the first game could even be the full adaptation of this film. Even the 2004 remake by Zack Snyder is one of the best horror remakes ever made, and it's just what the remake should be, similar but different enough to work on its own. Btw Lee, have you seen the new trailer for Snyder's Army Of The Dead? Man, i was looking forward to it already, but after seeing that trailer, i can't wait to see it!
Can you describe what the Amazon Prime Video version that features you actually is? I really want to experience this classic, but does it have commentary all the way throughout the film, or what? Great channel, and a new subscriber!
Actually I'm not sure haha. I didn't even know they were using my image. I'm hearing that it's a different cut though. I might have to break down and watch it. And thank you!
@@DrumdumsOfficial No problem, man! I’m watching it now, and so far it’s just the actual movie, but I have no idea which of the three versions this one is. The overall time is 2 hours, and 19 minutes if that helps, and keep up the amazing work!
I saw Dawn of the Dawn as a child. Being a horror movie fan back then, nothing ever scared me, until I saw this movie. It stayed with me for days. Because of that movie zombie movies still disturb me. As far as I'm concerned, Romero is THE godfather director of horror!
Yeah, even though it said NO ONE UNDER 17 ADMITTED, the theaters still let me in when I was a kid. I saw it 3 times in 3 different theaters. And I had nightmares for years.
Even though I'm not a huge zombie movie fan, there are 2 that I love: Train to Busan and the original Dawn of the Dead. I even enjoy both George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead and Land of the Dead. Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead was the first zombie I ever saw. I was in high school when it came out. And for the record, I love Shaun of the Dead.
First time I watched I thought it was overrated. After the 3rd watch and thought a little more about it, I was like Oh Yeah! What the hell is wrong with me. I get it. This is great. I love it now but I rank it 3rd behind night and Day.
Catching this at the 2:41 am late night hour, so cool and well review Lee, I’m adding to my list of movies to see. I’ve never seen this I have seen Night Of The Living Dead what was pretty good, and I’m not usually an undead/zombie person but I trust you surely and will venture into the late 70’s to check this out. 🖤🎬🧟♂️ Thank you Lee, hope you’ve been well as can be and safe continuously.💛
I also didn’t have a great appreciation for Romeo. I saw Night in the 80s and thought it was overrated, but i watched Dawn and realized the deeper undercurrent of the film. Day just completes the story! There is always an element of cheese in Romeo films, which gives them such character! I also love the diversity of actors he uses. Way ahead of the times!! 🧟🧟♀️🧟♂️
Great review. The Second Sight 4K is amazing. It's a shame Scott Reiniger didn't go on to other great things as he is awesome as Roger. Fly Boy does the best zombie walk of all time, with the gun dangling off the finger - perfection.
Great review Lee! I've never seen George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978), but I've seen Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead (2004). Definitely gonna try to check the 1978 film out
Your review is spot on! I just rewatched for probably the 300th time last night on Amazon and it was an alternate edit, with a different soundscape, deleted scenes etc. any idea what version this was? I ask because you are on the cover..
I just recently watched Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead, Day Of The Dead, & Survival Of The Dead over the course of 2 days. While I wouldn't bother watching Survival Of The Dead again, since it's by far my least favorite of the 4 films. I'll definitely be watching the first 3 films again, especially Dawn Of The Dead which is my favorite of them all. Thankfully, all 4 of those films are available on UA-cam for free.
It's not OOP. The movie was released by Second Sight... A non US company. I think it is still available through their website and Zavvi. Some places like www.diabolikdvd.com/ get some copies, but they sell out and are slow to get more in stock.
Dawn is playing again this Halloween weekend in Regal Cinemas nation wide. It is in 3D, which should be interesting. The other day I watched original Jaws in 3D and it added a little to it
Luv the video drumdums. Now that you’ve seen movies from the big 3. Can you rate them . Them being Carpenter,Craven,Romero. Or do you plead the fifth 😆.
You should definitely do a review for Dawn of the Dead 2004 remake Lee since you review the original movie might as well do a review on the remake version too it needs to be talk about and it’s a really good and fun remake bro too
This is the best zombie movie ever made and most influential horror movies ever made. I have made many trips to the mall and even got to slide down the pennys escalator because the employees let me do it and they let me ride the elevator years ago. Once in a lifetime moment.
I grew up in the area. Some of my friends and I were extras. It was adults only due to the gore so we weren't allowed to go see it. I finally saw it in 1983 when it came out on video.
It's about damn time Lee lol jk but in all seriousness I'm happy your reviewing this movie now! Night of the living dead and Day of the dead are my favorites out of the trilogy but Dawn of the dead is still very good too. Also you should review the movie called Zombi 2 which is an unofficial sequel to Dawn of the dead! 😄❤️🧟♂️
My favorite zombie's flick of all time. But i prefer the european/Argento's cut, even if it leaves out most of the Romero's vision about social issues and consumerism. The Argento's version is more fast paced, there's more tension and horror, and the fantastic Goblin's soundtrack really gives the movie a very different dimension, more modern and creepier. Like i said, even if most of Romero's vision and intent are left out, the Argento's cut works better as a horror movie, and it's my favorite.
This is George A Romero rip BEST entry in the Of The Dead series I love the characters Roger it sukks that he became a zombie I wish he survived he is a character I reflect myself to I am reckless as he and also Peter rocks too I never cared too much for the married couple they always came off as damsels in distress what I love with the concept behind this movie is the idea of hungry zombies at a mall being a metaphor for consumerism also the Tom Savini with his rowdy biker gang scene is easily my favorite moment in the movie!! This is like I said my favorite entry followed by Day of the Dead and a tie between Land of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead those first 4 movies are essential gems however good things don’t last forever as Diary and Survival were real letdowns.
I just consume anything Dawn of the Dead related... Thank you for the very good review. Fly-boy is the best zombie ever, even topping 'Buuub' from Day of the Dead (which is interesting but a bit comical). Maybe a Day of the Dead review?
Besides Zombieland (which I finally saw in full two years or so ago.) this is probably the one classic zombie movie I want to see! I appreciate the fake looking makeup and fake looking blood considering zombie films aren't my preferred genre, and the idea of realistic looking zombies eating people REALLY rubbed me the wrong way when watching bits and pieces of the walking dead 😒😬😱🧟♂️ I apparently cannot handle cannibalism.
I think flyboy is the better zombie because when he turns its personal it's a character you cared about throughout the movie not just a zombie that has a memorable look
Zombies aren't canibals. They only feed om warm flesh. They don't feed on each other. The movie even has a sceen explaining this. It is the scene before they go move the trucks.
I really love this film!! Honestly though... I feel like it gets a lot of recognition from horror fans but from almost everyone else I've ever seen they always think I'm talking about the remake, hardly anyone I've spoken to aside from huge horror fans have even seen the original. I'll never forget it though!! It's so good. Night, Dawn and Day are a fantastic trilogy, I love all 3. Land isn't too bad... but Diary was pretty awful.. it was so bad that I never got around to watching Survival.
i like the original dawn of the dead 1978 but my favorite is the remake of zack snyder dawn of the dead 2004 that one was a masterpiece and i love the main character in that movie Sarah polley did a great job in that movie and she sure is beautiful and gorgeous and she did a great job in that remake of the dawn of the dead but the original for me is a 7/10 stars and the remake is a 10/10 stars since i think it way better than slow zombies that doesn't look like zombies compare to the remake zombies in dawn of the dead those zombies are much scarier than than George a Romero zombies but overall i still enjoyed the classic for dawn of the dead 1978 film
Dawn of The Dead(1978) deserves to be selected for film preservation
Absolutely
I agree but tbh even that preservation thing is starting to get silly. As always they make it an annual thing and indict a bunch of films at once so sooner or later they will start to select weaker films (and they have) from the 21st century and also will start selecting films that have equal ethnic background characters and gender quality ect to stop snowflakes complaining about every minor thing
The Amazon icon has the same as this videol LOL
The Thing, The Shining, Alien, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Dawn of the Dead are the best horror movies of all time imo.
Boo yah
great picks right there. I would replace The Shining with Halloween but that doesn't make me right! Often not mentioned also which is a stroke of genius is Cronenberg's version of the Fly
I would add Halloween, but a top tier list for sure.

Great review, Lee! Actually, fucking awesome! You did some serious prep work for this one! You definitely did it justice...
0:23 when you get to work and see that co-worker you're not fond of
Haha exactly.
Is there any reason why they used your thumbnail for the Amazon prime video picture?
I have no idea. Very strange.
Nice review Lee? :)
hyped after that Zack Snyder Army of the dead trailer yesterday?
First time I watched I thought it was overrated. After the 3rd watch and thought a little more about it, I was like Oh Yeah! What the hell is wrong with me. I get it. This is great. I love it now but I rank it 3rd behind night and Day.
No wonder Peter thought he could stand up to Mikey Myers...After all, he whipped all those zombie's asses! :D
Foree OWNED this role. It’s no wonder that Zombie wanted him in his actor’s tool belt.
Great review Lee, can you do one for "Day Of The Dead" (controversy-its even better!)
Absolutely. Looking forward to that one.
@@DrumdumsOfficial deffo, I still think it's the best Romero movie.
Love it but always turn off when the bandits come hate that they destroyed everything we went through to control and take over the mall. Anyone else??
Dawn of The Dead(1978) deserves a Criterion Collection release or from Scream Factory or Arrow Video
Arrow did release it. As a 3 disc set on blu ray cost me alot of dollars..
Amazon prime has you as the thumbnail ❤
Haha I know.
I always love Dawn of the Dead and the Second Sight release was best version of it so far.
Good point Kimberely. I think we don't realize how much of a signature he had on his films until we compare them to others. There is only one Romero.
@@DrumdumsOfficial AMEN!
God, I hate the word "cheese"
Did you know that this videos thumbnail, is being used on Amazon Prime in America for Dawn of the dead?
I noticed that too.
Yes I just found out recently. Pretty wild haha.
all the sequels I mentioned including the Honorable mentions for extra clarification are textbook classic examples of how to make an excellent sequel
Great review. The Second Sight 4K is amazing. It's a shame Scott Reiniger didn't go on to other great things as he is awesome as Roger. Fly Boy does the best zombie walk of all time, with the gun dangling off the finger - perfection.
Back to Back Zombie Classics that came out in 1979..DAWN OF THE DEAD and ZONBIE 2!!!!
It came out in 78 though
Great review Lee! I've never seen George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978), but I've seen Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead (2004). Definitely gonna try to check the 1978 film out
Your review is spot on! I just rewatched for probably the 300th time last night on Amazon and it was an alternate edit, with a different soundscape, deleted scenes etc. any idea what version this was? I ask because you are on the cover..
Haha I've been hearing that a lot. I wonder if it's the Argento edit.
@@DrumdumsOfficial that’s what I was thinking. Thanks for the response!
I can’t wait to watch Day.
It's not OOP.
The movie was released by Second Sight... A non US company.
I think it is still available through their website and Zavvi.
Some places like www.diabolikdvd.com/ get some copies, but they sell out and are slow to get more in stock.
Saw this when it came out at the drive in. Too young to see it. Great sequel to Night of the Living dead. Appreciated when watched after I was older
This would be awesome at the drive-in.
Dawn is playing again this Halloween weekend in Regal Cinemas nation wide. It is in 3D, which should be interesting. The other day I watched original Jaws in 3D and it added a little to it
Just ordered the second sight set. Can't wait to watch it for the 20th time!
@@VIDEOgameDROME Nice!
Great review of a classic. Bub from Day of the Dead is my favorite zombie of all time👍 FYI DOTD is on UA-cam for peeps that have not watched it
Can't wait to finally watch Day.
Luv the video drumdums.
Now that you’ve seen movies from the big 3.
Can you rate them .
Them being Carpenter,Craven,Romero.
Or do you plead the fifth 😆.
Awesome giallo shirt where can I get one at ?
..?
I was wondering where can I buy that giallo shirt You are wearing in your video From ?please let me know
You should definitely do a review for Dawn of the Dead 2004 remake Lee since you review the original movie might as well do a review on the remake version too it needs to be talk about and it’s a really good and fun remake bro too
This is the best zombie movie ever made and most influential horror movies ever made.
Damn that's awesome man!
Can I ask you one question how I come you did not do the video about the new Candyman movie I think it's 2020
I did a reaction, and will definitely review it.
This is my goat of zombie movies.. Remero done some classic movies Martin, Monkey shines. The crazies & Day of the Dead. 👍👍Rip George..
Don’t forgot Creepshow and Knightriders
& two evil eyes..
Yeah Roger was so awesome.
You gotta also see Day of the dead, Land of the dead, & 1990 remake of Night of the living dead. Those are also well worth your time Lee!
I’ve seen land, but day in the remake or high on my watchlist.
This movie was so awesome - great review 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Mike!
I can’t believe I haven’t watched any of the movies in this series yet! I need to get on that asap
I still have to watch Day of the Dead. Really looking forward to it.
Watching this makes me want to play Dead Rising again.
Rest in peace David Emge (Skyboy)
Yep. So sad.
Did you know your thumbnail is on the Amazon listing for the digital version of this?
Haha yes. I've been told quite a bit lately.
I think flyboy is the better zombie because when he turns its personal it's a character you cared about throughout the movie not just a zombie that has a memorable look
I agree.
Zombies aren't canibals. They only feed om warm flesh. They don't feed on each other.
The movie even has a sceen explaining this. It is the scene before they go move the trucks.
My bad.
imagine making a fantastic movie that is a mixture of The Road Warrior and Dawn of The Dead(1978)
Lee I thought this particular set is an unlimited edition? Shouldn't be sold out yet. We'll at least I really hope it isn't.
Lee does your set have 7 discs or 4! Lee I was just reading about the original ending and according to Tom Savini some of it was filmed!
4 good sir.
