Good morning GARDEN ANSWER family. Ever since that first container competition... I loved it when Aaron was on camera. I think when you do the highlights when it cuts to show him speaking or a reaction to something Laura has said, it feels like we're sitting right there with you both. So yes it would be like somethings missing if Aaron wasn't there.

I work part-time at a mom and pop hardware store and we had to use a new vendor for our flowers this year. When the truck arrived 3+ days late. I couldn't believe the Manager accepted the load as they were in a hot box without water for days! Upside, I got 100's of free plants that with Bio-tone, water, time and a prayer had the best garden ever! Why? I listen and learn from Laura! Thank you Laura and Aaron!

I'm with you Laura, I've hired people to do things I used to do myself and friends say "why spend the money" my response is because I want to. Can't do some stuff anymore or I just don't plain want to do it. In my area "hiring someone" is enough stress in itself - I could go on and on about finding someone who wants to work, but I won't. I figure I've got one body and I'm going to take care of it. You go girl.

Hi Laura! My husband was a landscaper and I definitely agree about plant refunds. That said, I grow dahlias and sometimes it IS the plants. I ordered some pricy cuttings and when they arrive, a few had tomato spot wilt virus. Thankfully, the vendor made it right and admitted having an issue that they were addressing.

    • @rik80280
      @rik80280 2 роки тому +11

Absolutely, if there is a disease issue, or if it's mail order and it arrives moldy, or it is bare root and never leafs out. Guarantees should be conditional, but overall you garner a lot of goodwill by replacing an item (even if it was totally their fault), it's still worth it to offer replacements. And think of all the things that you actually did screw up on that the customer never bothered to make a return on. It all evens out.

The nursery I buy from pulled this years crop of yellow.peonies off their tables due to a serious issue this year, disappointing but I'll try again next spring. Had a huge one that I divided a couple years ago and my piece may take another year to bloom again, so I wanted another big one. The yellow Itoh peony is stunning, mine had about 35 huge flowers on it and I want more.

I do think that falls into the issue of a "recall" when an entire batch of plants are infected by a contagious fungus. Another scenario would be ordering a bunch of knock-out roses and having them come with rose rosette disease.

Laura, you are so wise to take a step back from the really heavy work (ie:planting the very large B&B trees) in your garden. I, like you have a great love of gardening and all things decorative, especially in the garden. I have the same build as you and have been “strong as a bull” (LOL!) and high energy all of my life. Because of that, I’ve really enjoyed doing both landscape and hardscape, built retaining walls by myself, laid flagstone, did all of my own planting and transplanting and root pruned my own potted trees. But now at 63 years old, because I haven’t taken better care of myself, I’m having back and shoulder trouble, nothing that can’t be fixed with a chiropractor and some physical therapy, but annoying to say the least. So much so that I’ve had to hire all the heavy work that needed to be done this year and will have to continue to let the big, strong, younger men do the heavy work. I have to wear a back support to just do the weeding. I’ve really been limited this year which, honestly, is frustrating and a little scary. Gardening has always been such a stress reliever for me and it has always fed the creative side of me. I really enjoy your videos, not only for the gardening but my husband and I have the same “world view” as well. Please continue to take good care of your body now and protect yourself so that you won’t have any painful restrictions in the future. God bless you and your beautiful family!
    Sincerely,
    Sylvia Stevenson

Note on the predatory mites for your boxwoods... try to research a pad or outside hormone scent diffuser to keep the bugs in the intended area. I have spoken to a few local gardeners in my area that released certain bugs, but the bugs would go somewhere else! They were mentioning ladybug hormone scent pads, so when they ladybugs were released, they would stay very local to your property.

Happy Sunday to you all! Glad Aaron was able to join you for this recap and hope he is feeling better soon.
When questions are asked about soil and soil amendments my first go to would be doing a soil test. All states have cooperative extension offices that can direct you on how to obtain soil for testing and where soil can be tested. A report is generated with PH level and based on what you plan to plant or have planted what add ins are needed. It is a simple step to help insure your efforts both physical and financial are met. Happy gardening!

I’m enjoying the plant refund question. My two cents to the conversation are that small garden centers usually have the expertise to properly care for the pants and plant failures are usually due to customers lack of experience. This is not the case for big box stores and they will sale you a “lemon” plant with limited return policies, so buyer beware.

Glad that you were able to get a replacement tree. It is disappointing to not have a plant or tree thrive after spending $$$ on it.
Had a tree replaced twice! The tree nursery planted it originally and after a year it was still not thriving. Went back and talked to them about it and they came took a look. Brought me a second tree, different variety and same thing happened! Went back to buy another tree and when they learned why they gave me a replacement tree! They came out and dug out the tree, suggested a different spot since the original one had not worked out. Turned out the original spot had cement trash! Ugh. The builder apparently tossed soil and graded over it before placing sod. So frustrating to learn things like this about a company or process you trusted! The last tree an oak, has thrived and is now 20 years old producing the shade I wanted for my backyard.

Yes, Aaron, there is a difference between ‘morning sun’ and ‘FULL morning sun’, at least here in Florida and I’m sure in your high desert as well. With sun as intense as ours, gardeners must be EXTREMELY careful about situating plants so that they get as much sun as they need but don’t end up fried. And sometimes it’s just not possible to make them happy 😢.

The recap videos have always been my favorites. Thanks to Aaron for making the effort this week while feeling under the weather! 🙏. Appreciate all the topics discussed in this one. So sorry the big maple didn’t make it, but glad you made the right call to start over rather than spend the money and end up disappointed with less than adequate results. I also can relate to needing more freezer space. We could totally fill up another auxiliary freezer. At the moment we have two. I recommend getting as much freezer space as you can fit and fill. At the same time, with that amount of investment, a generator might also be in order if power outages are a risk like they are in my area. 💚💚💚

I rarely have a plan. My husband is the opposite. He makes lists the night before, and follows through. We are retired, and get a super amount of work done outside. However, we let housework go and laugh to each other about it. Life can be enjoyable and meaningful either way. I have watched your videos for some time now, and really love what you are doing. It is so refreshing to see you two work so hard and complement each other in such a wholesome way. I love how you involve the children in everything, too.

Good to know that when I'm working in the yard I let my housework go too. I had much rather be working outside anytime over inside work lol🤣

We bought our house last year *first time homeowners* and we put in a huge xeriscape in our front yard since we’re zone 7a with water restrictions. Since then, three neighbors have put them in as well! So amazing how gardening can inspire others. Also, one of our neighbors gifted us 3 magnolia trees! They have a very mature garden and were so excited to see us transforming our yard.

28.28 - Talking about Laura noticing baseboards and windows in a house - I have to share this story with you. My mother passed away when I was twelve and my 4 older siblings were military and lived all over the world, literally. I remember when one of my brothers came home for a visit one time, he made the comment that my mother's house was the only one he knew of where the tops of the pictures were dusted. He was a tall man who noticed those kinds of things and my mother was a nurse who kept our home antiseptic. Such a fun memory whenever I think of it.

Can I just acknowledge, Aaron you are a good husband to Laura. It shows! Your role isn’t as visible to us as Laura’s, but those that follow know the work that it takes to create your paradise. You’re role is that of a Producer and Project Manager, and those that know this role, know it often comes with less recognition. Know this my friend, you are needed and a significant part of the success of this channel. I enjoy your family and your journey. I appreciate all you do to acknowledge your wife’s talents and the bond that is so appreciated and apparent to us all. May the Lord continue to bless your family. Amen!

I think we all love Aaron, I think we all love that your whole family is involved in one way or other. I also think that we all feel as if we’re part of your family at times and love that feeling.I’m so glad that you feel comfortable enough to let us share your family. I’m not sure how I stumbled onto your channel a few years ago, but I do know that it’s been something I look forward to everyday, Saturdays are a bummer, but oh well I’ll get over it. 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃

@Judy McKerrow ~ just a suggestion for your Saturday, unless you have watched all of their videos already, you could watch or rewatch an older video. That way you could still enjoy seeing them and enjoy your coffee watching a video.🤗 My comment is not meant to be rude or disrespectful to you; just a suggestion. Have a wonderful day!

When a garden center plants the tree ( here in North Central, Indiana) they guarantee it for a year. I would think because of the cost of the tree and planting has to be enormous, that company should totally absorb the cost of that one plant and apply it to a new tree.

  • @laurelrosegardens6454
    @laurelrosegardens6454 2 роки тому +4

Return policies can be useful for the garden centers too. If they are seeing a lot of returns or failures of particular plants that could indicate environmental factors for the area. Or it could be bad genetics on a variety. Say, something gets returned a lot because winters and springs are way too wet there even though the zone is appropriate. The garden center might decide not to carry that variety or reduce inventory because they don't want disappointed customers having to return their plants. And for every plant returned there might be another customer who just tosses theirs and says, well I'm not shopping at that store anymore. It's not always user error. And for some people spending $60 on their perennials is their entire budget so that is very costly. I greatly appreciate plant guarantees and it makes me shop more at retailers that offer that.

Sunday’s are my favorite. I really enjoy the highlights video the most. Probably because of the two of you are on camera and the discussion back and forth. Plus people ask great questions that you answer and learn something. Great team, videos, great discussions so if you have to cut videos in the slow months don’t cut this one please.

I think when trees are planted by the grower on your property, has waterlines installed to water it, then it should have a guarantee as it's a big investment.(big difference with small plants bought in containers and planted by the customer). By the way , I think you both together make up a Dream Team! In life and in videos...and Mount Bruno Boxwoods were introduced by André Poliquin in Mont-St Bruno near Montreal ....Yeah! Will plant those in my Montreal garden. Thanks for the info and Hi from Quebec 👋🇨🇦🍁🍂

Your videos are great because they include some of Aaron, Benjamin and Samantha Grace. We listen for the knowledge you provide and suggestions for plantings. Flower arrangements are beautiful. I like the surprise in growing. I recently tried to save a tiny baobab tree that had died to a stick form. No harm in trying?
Watering the tree brought it back to life and also brought forth a ZZ plant!

Plants can fail because of the grower tactics and/or the shipper tactics. So although not technically the nursery's fault, it's also not the buyer's fault. And it can be a one-off situation, so difficult to determine. There's so many things that can stress an individual plant along the way (from seedling stage all the way to final planting location) that it's not something where blame can be obvious.

After watching the weekly recap for a while its actually my favorite. It feels more like just hanging out with a friend. I still love the regular weekly videos, but the recap is my fav. I cannot wait to see the Christmas display this year! I think I know why gardening is such a daunting idea for most people. Unless you grew up with a gardening parent; it takes years/seasons to learn what you're doing. I've had a vegetable garden for 6yrs and only been successful the last 2. And at least vegetable gardens are just a year to year thing. Thinking about permanently placing large trees is scary.

Laura I have to thank you for your philosophy on planning garden spaces. I’ve lived in my home since the mid 2000’s and never landscaped our home because I had “paralysis by analysis”. I was afraid I wouldn’t put the right plants in the right places or the plants wouldn’t work together but hearing you regularly say they are just plants and if you need to move them do it. Really helped me shake off the fear of making a mistake and get started. This year I created and planted 7 large planter beds in our front yard that is 1/2 an acre. Next year I plan to tackle the backyard which is also a 1/2 acre. Your courage in changing your garden to fit your family needs and likes has been a true inspiration for me. From the bottom of my heart thank you.

Back in the day, we just eat the cherries not even thinking about worms and after a few years would just take the worm out and eat the rest.... I don't know if I would do this now. Ever since I came to America and this no bug culture got to me. It took a good few years to realize why the fruits and vegetables have no bugs here. Even though I hate bugs, would prefer rather than using chemicals on food.

I started watching you back when Aaron was seldom in the videos. It is nice to see him in the videos and he is very knowledgeable about trees. Also it is fun to see how much he has learned about flowers and gardening.
I'm glad that you are getting a Replacement Tree. Your situation is very different from the usual nursery guarantees. Lowes has a plant guarantee, if it dies or doesn't come up next year. I have never used that guarantee because it is usually "User Error."
I LOVE the face on the tree. Always makes me smile.
    Hope Aaron feels better soon.
