Our coach was a former Army drill sergeant. Sometimes instead of wind sprints, he would sit in his car and make us push him around the parking lot. We hated/loved him!
I sat on the wall for an hour. It was like a literal form of torture. My back and legs after we're in the worst pain and fatigue of my little life. Made me who I am.

We won the state championship that year, a year after we lost in the state championship game. The entire weight of the city came off our backs. Only time in my life I felt weightless. Didn’t think the 3-a-days were great idea but we won the only football state championship in the history of our city. All road game playoff wins too. Magic. Thanks then coaches!!
I live next to the military chemical weapons storage base so we have a different alarm. We used to joke that if the alarm ever went off for real it was probably too late...

So if you were on a bike or walking, you'd better be in your yard or driveway if still outside. Back then kids respected their parents n authorities and there was none of this hanging out at the park or basketball courts til midnight or later. Nowadays kids would laugh if you told them to be home by then. 🤨😒

My favorite soccer coach (Dave Berman you were the best!) made us run 1 mile every practice (at 9 years old). We won every game easily simply by being 1000 times better conditioned than everyone else. That was the best season ever and a very important life lesson - hard work can beat natural ability all day long.
Had a then coach in football, we were be practicing in the Sat am on a very foggy morning. All ran off in the fog just out of his view and stopped. He came running through the fog caught us standing. We spent the rest of the two hours doing suicides windsprints and running hills. Lost at least 5lbs from puking 🤮 but he made us better players. God I miss when coaches could be coaches

I remember when one of my teammates got his leg broke at practice and our coaches made us run for the entire rest of practice (about a hour) while they took him to the hospital. Good but terrible times.

A couple years ago I once was asked to help with a local youth football team. I was asked to resign when the team wanted “team bonding” and I told them to pair up and run in a 2x2 line until bonding time was over. I guess I was a little intense for these kids

I remember playing football in elementary school. Run 2 laps backwards, 6 forward, he had big rings and would practically punch you in the helmet. During the knee down at end of practice all of our heads would be steaming. Kinda miss it.
Having many “then” coaches when I played hockey between 1st grade and my senior year of high school, they were the entire reason I would make any progress, and the reason i performed at my peak when it was game time. They pushed me way further than I ever thought I could go, and because of that I’m super grateful for all of my coaches proving to me that I was better and stronger than I thought I could ever be. They taught me a lot of solid lessons, taught me to have a relentless work ethic, and just like with everyone else who was lucky enough to have coaches like that, It 100% carries over into adult life.

Yes, my 7 year old says this… I keep telling her that’s not how we talk, wtf! She even took a grade 2 entrance exam for another school. The teacher told her that she should only answer the questions she wants. She told me that she didn’t want to answer any, she just didn’t feel like it. I’m like… do you ever see me or your dad give up….
Had a then coach and remember a 95 degree day during camp and we did a drill for about a hour straight. Sent 6 out of the 14 lineman we had to the training room with heat exhaustion. Everyone else on the team was watching us do that drill in pure terror lol. But hey got me a scholarship cause of that man.

Ran 30-45 min before practice, did doubles the first week and a triple one Saturday. The team made it to states because they could outrun the other schools. Coach retires, new coach comes in, no more running or doubles. First season, the team went 0-15-1.
Man thats so relatable it actually hurts lmao. My soccer team I was with for 6 years, we were dead last the first year playing together (0 wins, a tie and all loses) LOL. For the next 12 months he made us come out every Saturday, even when the season was over. We had to run 5 rounds of the Scotish Mile (entire team runs in a single file line and the last person has to sprint to the front, then rinse and repeat until the mile is done). After that year we went undefeated every season or 2nd place because we simply played the last minutes as hard as the first minutes cause we were so conditioned.
because football is such a rough sport, especially at the higher levels, it kind of is like preparing for combat/war. So a "Then" coach is better if you want to win because you are treated like a soldier. It helps for contact sports. BUT looking back now at some of the things my football coach taught all of us about "This is what a winner is", It doesn't work in real life. It works on the field, but there was some downright narcissistic philosophies that he taught us. Things like, "A winner walks through the door first. He doesn't open the door for anybody." Or another one was "A winner walks in the room like this." Then he mimed walking into the room with his head pulled back, and his chest puffed out, arms pulled back and out, walking very proud and cocky. he taught a very me-first, self-serving, narcissistic attitude. It works for making you not afraid to be a brutal force out on the field, he made us tougher, and he was a mastermind of a play-caller. But i carried some of those attitudes into real life outside of football and if the 2 greatest commandments that Jesus gave us were to love others as if they were me, and to love God with everything I am, narcissism doesn't work well for a life well lived. This is coming from a guy who got a scholarship to play D2 football. I'll take the "Then" coach over the "Now" coach if it is about winning, but the "Then" coaches also treat their players pretty poorly at times too. Sometimes I could not have cared less about what my coach was saying when he is ragging on a player or the whole team for something the rest of us ALL saw it as not that big of a deal. It's like this weird tension between wanting to be a good/competitive team and to improve as a player, while at the same time, I don't want to be walking around on eggshells having to constantly prove myself to my coach/ win his approval every practice. To give somebody that much power over you, who treats you poorly and gets angry at you every time you make a mistake in a game, which is literally full of made-up rules and fake points, it can't be a healthy relationship. It's like, "We haven't even done anything wrong yet coach!" lol Let's see how practice goes before you get mad at us. Bottom line is, it's a sport. Sports are competitive. If you want to win, a "Then" coach can help you do that. How good a coach is, is generally measured by how much they win. So the relationship with a sports coach like that is nothing like a relationship with a friend. It's a business transaction.
When I was playing high school football a couple years back, by the end of the season none of the linemen had paint on the front of their helmets. But then on the line your head goes forward first so it was natural to be the first thing to hit the opponent. We also would pair up and hit each other till one had been driven back 5 yards and the winner progressed till only one was left standing every day during practice Granted this was in Iowa so that may have been part of it
I had a "then" coach in college. Only difference was that all the things he made you do, he did them as well. He was also better at those things I've never had so much respect for someone in my life, and I strived to do the same, both as life long student and instructor
That no water shit made me laugh, the varsity coach in highschool used to hold a pre-try out "champ camp" where we didn't touch pucks for the entire time, just four days of skating for an hour straight. He made us ring a cow bell in order to take a drink of water and wouldn't let us bring it on the ice with us. Also had a 5 gallon bucket at center ice that he called the puke bucket, never seen it used though.

I remember winning out first football game as a school (7th grade). The score was like 72-0. We then got in trouble for not winning by more when we could have. After that game everyone game 100% effort no matter how much we were up by or how much time was left. Edit: To add, we were really stacked compared to other schools in the same division but we also ALWAYS ran no-huddle offense.
The "now" coach is ruining our society, but the "then" coach was bad, too. In 90's middle school football, water was a privilege, and a concussion was "getting your bell rung" that caused you to miss one or two snaps. Both ways suck.
Totally agree. Don't want a bunch of concussions by the time your outa highschool and you gotta stay hydrated on the hot days but also have to be physically and mentally though to be competitive.

One of these guys was a complete moron and another one was a bit of a psycho so it's honestly not that surprising that either of them had taken so many concussions

I remember my Pop Warner football coach wasn't allowed to smoke on the field so he'd make us all huddle around him and he'd take a knee and act like he was giving us a pep talk and suck down a Marlboro Red while we kept watch.
The water thing is the only one I can get behind, only because muscle gains are amplified by drinking a ton of water. If you don't get gains you don't win games is what my old coach used to say.

I think we can find a middle ground between now coach and the coach that pushes people to dehydration and heat stroke. In basic at Fort Benning they regularly forced us to drink water to prevent dehydration.
One coach asked me not to come back unless I was sitting in the stands watching them play. I had to sit on the bench during a game because they couldn't take a chance with me and lose the game. No feelings hurt, and that set me up for adulthood.
My soccer coach just a few years back was a 'then' coach. If we lost a game, even by a tiny margin he would make us practice until we were sure we could beat the team we had lost to.
I remember having to miss practice one time and the next day had to do a make up practice that was 10 times harder than the regular practice. But I never missed another one.
I coached youth soccer, but refused to coach above age 11 (parents were a pain above that age). I was the THEN coach at practice, and the NOW coach after games, which were much easier than practice because we were prepared... Being prepared (even if you lose) is much more fun than not being prepared and being exposed in front of your family and friends.
It's so true. Kids were better off for it in the past. They learned discipline and hard work. Today everyone is so soft and gets their participation trophys just for showing up.
My dad is my softball coach and I told him this year since I saw this video to make everyone run laps and he said “no but I will make them run every time before practice” and I told him to make us have water breaks after practice and he said no we will have one every 15 minutes since we live in Texas which makes since but pretty much told him not to be a soft coach and I have to say he is one of the best coaches I have ever had he’s really funny and strict so it’s a good mix.
My old wrestling coach drank probably 37 cups of coffee a day, smelled like a combination of cologne and cigarettes, and was slightly lopsided from decades of setting up attacks from his power side; usually from a right sided underhook. Wouldn't trade a minute of the 100 degree rooms, stair laps, conditioning circuts and round-robins for anything. I miss that guy.
Growing up in Canada, i had some hard ass hockey coaches growing up, but to be honest, I wouldnt change it for a thing, got you ready for the real world.

Same in 8th grade basketball too. We were talented but we ran alot and were definitely better conditioned.

That no water shit made me laugh, the varsity coach in highschool used to hold a pre-try out "champ camp" where we didn't touch pucks for the entire time, just four days of skating for an hour straight. He made us ring a cow bell in order to take a drink of water and wouldn't let us bring it on the ice with us. Also had a 5 gallon bucket at center ice that he called the puke bucket, never seen it used though.
😂😂😂 To this day, nothing makes me shudder with fear like waiting to get on the ice & see your coach come over w/a diabolical grin, followed by a "you guys won't need your sticks today"

My husbands older than me so he had a “then” coach. His last name is Diller and the coach would call him “Dildo” 🤣 his friends (we still live in the town he grew up in) still call him Dildo when they go to the bars and I love it!
My coach did the “no water” treatment on us and a kid passed out of dehydration. He had to run the next day lmao
When I was little our team used to give skull stickers to put on the back of your helmet to the kid who had the biggest hit of the game 😆

I just remember if I did something good in practice. The coach would praise you and he always had beer breath. Great guy learned alot and later on I coached. I don't drink, but I see why he did. I miss the 90s.

I remember winning out first football game as a school (7th grade). The score was like 72-0. We then got in trouble for not winning by more when we could have. After that game everyone game 100% effort no matter how much we were up by or how much time was left.
Edit: To add, we were really stacked compared to other schools in the same division but we also ALWAYS ran no-huddle offense.

Every coach is the “NOW” when they recruit and turn into “THEN” when actually coaching
The "now" coach is ruining our society, but the "then" coach was bad, too. In 90's middle school football, water was a privilege, and a concussion was "getting your bell rung" that caused you to miss one or two snaps. Both ways suck.
There definitely needs to be a balance. Soft leaders make soft people, but at the same time, authoritarianism for the sake of authoritarianism is dumb
Totally agree. Don't want a bunch of concussions by the time your outa highschool and you gotta stay hydrated on the hot days but also have to be physically and mentally though to be competitive.
@@derekt9974 I knew freshmen in college whose doctors told them they had already taken too many concussions and could never play football again. One of these guys was a complete moron and another one was a bit of a psycho so it's honestly not that surprising that either of them had taken so many concussions

I remember my Pop Warner football coach wasn't allowed to smoke on the field so he'd make us all huddle around him and he'd take a knee and act like he was giving us a pep talk and suck down a Marlboro Red while we kept watch.
The water thing is the only one I can get behind, only because muscle gains are amplified by drinking a ton of water. If you don't get gains you don't win games is what my old coach used to say.

I think we can find a middle ground between now coach and the coach that pushes people to dehydration and heat stroke. In basic at Fort Benning they regularly forced us to drink water to prevent dehydration.

One coach asked me not to come back unless I was sitting in the stands watching them play. I had to sit on the bench during a game because they couldn't take a chance with me and lose the game. No feelings hurt, and that set me up for adulthood.
My soccer coach just a few years back was a 'then' coach. If we lost a game, even by a tiny margin he would make us practice until we were sure we could beat the team we had lost to.

I remember having to miss practice one time and the next day had to do a make up practice that was 10 times harder than the regular practice. But I never missed another one.
I coached youth soccer, but refused to coach above age 11 (parents were a pain above that age). I was the THEN coach at practice, and the NOW coach after games, which were much easier than practice because we were prepared...
Being prepared (even if you lose) is much more fun than not being prepared and being exposed in front of your family and friends.

It's so true. Kids were better off for it in the past. They learned discipline and hard work. Today everyone is so soft and gets their participation trophys just for showing up.

All my coaches are then coaches and everyone loves it and I’ve never seen a now coach at football practice
My dad is my softball coach and I told him this year since I saw this video to make everyone run laps and he said “no but I will make them run every time before practice” and I told him to make us have water breaks after practice and he said no we will have one every 15 minutes since we live in Texas which makes since but pretty much told him not to be a soft coach and I have to say he is one of the best coaches I have ever had he’s really funny and strict so it’s a good mix.
My old wrestling coach drank probably 37 cups of coffee a day, smelled like a combination of cologne and cigarettes, and was slightly lopsided from decades of setting up attacks from his power side; usually from a right sided underhook. Wouldn't trade a minute of the 100 degree rooms, stair laps, conditioning circuts and round-robins for anything. I miss that guy.

Growing up in Canada, i had some hard ass hockey coaches growing up, but to be honest, I wouldnt change it for a thing, got you ready for the real world.
Grew up in the 80’s and “then” coach was the picture of discipline. No golden boys on a team and everyone had give 💯
