Taking a look at and trying out the Icon tools 25 piece multispline screw extractor set from harbor freight and removing a broken bolt from a pit bike.
Bought this a few weeks to extract a broken exhaust stud. Was able to drill the stud with the correct bit, but the extractor broke first time it was used…made my day more complicated as I now had to drill out the extractor.
Thanks for a real-world look at these in action! I've been considering grabbing a set - will probably grab them next time there's a good coupon. I haven't needed anything like this for a while (just knocked on some wood...), but wrench enough that I feel like I'm living on borrowed time...
I was trying to decide when and where I would use a spline extractor. And this answered my question. Never needed one. But lots of things use this type of drive these days.
The hex style and torx style fasteners were the main reason i bought this set. i did have a situation with a broken bolt inside of the head of a motor that i drilled and tried to install one of the smaller spline extractors into and actually broke it off which kinda sucked but harbor freight warrantied it no problem
I’ve got the SnapOn set like that, had it for almost 10 years now. I used to think it was useless except for broken fittings (adapters, sensors, etc). Seemed like I could never get a broken screw out with it. It has saved me a bit but I’ve never had luck with the smaller ones. They either break or don’t bite enough.
I got lucky acouple months ago the snap on set was on sale for about $87 , some type of promotion going on . I used it once since and worked pretty decent
@@alouiciousjackson5812 I’m going to be honest , i might be mistaken actually , it might’ve been $180ish actually 😂 that sounds more realistic from snap on
Now Icon needs the opposite kit set of this one. Such as the high quality and very well made MABLEVI 32 pc. Bolt Extractor set #XS001 and believe Icon will come out with this exact version as it's complete with every size in a nice case. Perfect as a back up whenever you may need it when working on an engine or chassis of an automobile!
The reason that screw wouldn't come out in the first place is because it had blue loctite on it. Some heat from a torch would have made it come out normally. But at least you got to test this tool.
I have always had 1000x better luck with the extractors shaped like square, old timey nails. Proto makes some beauties. Also, get you some real hex keys. Wera Hex plus. The only way to go. A close second is Bondhus, but nothing less.
don’t feel bad, i had a similar experience with a broken off stud that snapped off in the head of a small engine i was fixing. the drill bit either kept walking and would snap or the hole just wouldn’t go deep enough lol. ended having to weld a washer and a nut to it to get it out which i should have done in the first place. these definitely have a time and a place to use them and i guess in my first experience it was the wrong time lol
Do you need to drill it out for this to work? I have the same kind of bolt that I need to get out of my transfer case but it is about 4 to 5 in clearance from across beam so I will not be able to get a drill up in there
Travis I am in the same situation did you try it? If so did you have any luck? I am going to try it out tomorrow at work. hope it works. I am working on a medical device I can't drill at it so I hope it works.
These are all the same Irwin, Mac tools, icon I swear these are all from the same factory I have the Mac tools and Irwin ones man these things suck when they break. Better have that carbide drill bit handy. And they do break I've already snapped 2.
i can relate 100%, actually broke one trying to get a snapped valve cover bolt out of a bmw head and man was it a pain to get it out. i wish i recorded it.
Ama.zon sell the exact same thing in different brands same exact quality.... I go the MABLEVI 25 pcs. Screw Extractor set $37 total and it's the same exact design, cut, shape and material as the Icon....
Yeah, but this icon set has the walk-in, walk-out with a new tool, easy lifetime warranty...that you will absolutely utilize if you ever NEED to use these extractors!

Just went through that on the tractor.
Broke drill bit.
Wow what a day! Heh....
I've never once had a screw extractor actually extract, and often snap them. Good to know this one works!

it is definitely a nice set to have on hand for those times you need them! thank you for watching and enjoying the video!
@@supersonicmotorsportunlimitedWill this work on Hex Style bolts ?

Same just had the smallest one that comes with this icon set break this morning
I have the same set & it good no problems using it
Sweet, looks a lot like the Snap-on set that I haven't been able to afford yet!

@@reneantonio91 That's crazy they're usually around $250!

Wow. These extractors never work for me. I was gritting my teeth when you started to turn it out. LOL!! Good job!
First couple of turns gave me smashed knuckle phantom pains...😂

Blue Loctite doesn’t need heat. Red does.
Heat helps either way. Blue Loctite may need heat, red always needs heat.@@PonderingOne
@@alouiciousjackson5812
True, heat always helps, but the reason the fastener was stuck in this video wasn’t because blue Loctite was used.
I bought the same kit have not used it yet things do happen it’s looks pretty good .
This set saved my shame cave today. Used it to get a rounded off oil drain plug out.
definitely a great set to have for those types of situations!
Icon is pretty much the dyi Snap-On
I'm ready to got to war with my spark plug. Would this work for stuck spark plugs?
the cutting edge gave way on that drill bit as soon as the smoke stopped hahahha
harbor freight bits too am i right
Yeah, they be like that lol.
Left hand d drill bit is your friend here.
Just brought this today for $50…. Never know when this is going to come in handy

Yo los tengo y los recomiendo 100%
I had 2 drill bits that broke right in half and still didnt drill a hole big enough for the extractor to grip too. Another epic fail on my end

He's flying that jet by the seat of his pants 1:29
Never heard anyone call a triple clamp a triple tree lol
The guys at Orange County Choppers called them triple trees.
What if I ain’t got no mawookee?
Time will tell.
250* to release loctite.
Blue loctite doesn’t require heat. Will it help, sure. RED is the real pita that heat must be applied
I would have used a RBRT bit. It would been much faster and easier too
Maybe, but they even have a limit. I had one last week that I couldn’t get out with my RBRT cause it was so rounded.

Gripedge would have taken that right out.
True. But this Icon did. 😉

You could’ve used MAC RBRT bits to get that out. No drilling.
A small set from MAC is $115. Sets with about the same number of bits are around $250.
This set is $60
Not even the same category/comparison..
i got the 25 piece on ebay for 99 the mactools one
