The old one looks way better imo. The the dial, the pointers, the dimensions, everything is on pont on the old one. Only downside is the lume. Seiko had plenty of space on the smaller modell too to lume it well, but still refused to do it. That's a shame in this price range.
Obviously a lot of 813 owners watching this review. The 911 is an excellent looking piece. What matters is Seiko has given the opportunity for people with varying wrist sizes the ability to find a watch that fits them. The 813 looked tiny on my 7 1/2 inch wrist so I opted for the 911. Both great looking watches.
exactly the reason why i went with the ltd edition 909 at the end. had a chance to wear both of them and the new one is just too big for my tiny wrist. i totally second your praise for seiko making sure everybody finds their piece
I have the 813 and I wouldn’t change to the 911. The date disk is not super legible on both. The fully lume is cool but I prefer the overall look of the 813.
I really liked that old bezel with the bend in it, and ironically in moving to a flat bezel they've gone back more towards the Daytona design. It's a shame as the old bezels was excellent, but the new one is more pedestrian-looking and also proportionally too large.
Have to disagree with you. I much prefer the older SSC813 versions. The smaller 39mm size is better, and the DLC coated bezel looks way better than the aluminum bezel on the new ones (and will be more durable). Only improvements to the new 41mm size are the sub dials being the same size (thanks to the larger dial) and all the hour markers being lumed (not a deal breaker since i have tons of divers should I need lume). The older 39mm models looked nothing like a Rolex Daytona except for the bezel and panda colour scheme. The hands, dials, and hour markers were all completely different. Watch collectors were out to lunch calling the SSC813 the "Seitona". I'll be curious to see if the updated Speedtimer models prove as popular as the SSC813 which was selling well over list and hard to get for it's first 6 months of existence.
Well I think the 911 has much nicer handset and I agree the name was out to lunch but then I remembered Rolex owns the patent to black shiny bezels so the name made sense.
@@EscapementWatch Rolex owns the patent to black shinny bezels???? There’s a million watches with shinny black bezels and white dials, especially chronographs. It’s not just the “Seitona” name that was stupid it was the whole notion that it looked anything like a Daytona. The resemblance was passing at best. You might be right about the hands as wells. Put the fully lumed markers and new hands on the SSC813 and it would be damb near perfect!
It was a joke I used to poke fun of the people calling it the seiko tona when it first came out in my black seiko-tona review video!!! I just went with it because although I didn't see daytona in it, the majority did. And all the other youtubers were putting the word rolex in the title and raking up the views.
i had both on my wrist and went with the ltd edition ltd 39mm version. it's unbeatable when it comes to smaller wrists. the bezel on the new one is nicer but i like the hands and more compact size of the 909
Wish they could combine the two. I like the proportions of the older one and the 20mm lug width but the hands, indices, and lume is better on the new one. I also like the bigger sub dial at 6 o’clock on the newer one but hate the black date window.
I went to a store today and tried both. I really like them both but the 911 fits my 7.25 inch wrist better. I also like the new hands and red second hand. Can’t go wrong with either.
The first 813 model! I changed in mine the 2 second hands to red from the 815 model. The whole thing was $30. The red It's beautiful on the white dial. The new model is too big to chunky and the bezel is too wide. The whole watch is somehow not harmonious.
Like the new one much better! I purchased the first and was really disappointed how it fit the wrist. 7.5 in wrists are hard to fit. Looking forward to the refresh.
When the 813 is discontinued it’s gonna be worth 1300-1800 preowned. A small chronograph is simply too rare, and everyone knows this one is incredibly good looking.
I tried the new version today on my wrist and I'm amazed by the watch quality, it looks so expensive and well constructed. IMO it's not a big watch, my wrist is just 17cm and fits very nice! Greetings from Brasil ✌🏽
But you know, you got me to put on the newer one today, and it is growing on me, eapecially after I have been hunting for a pogue. I get it now. Could you imagine if they did this with a pogue face?!
I absolutely love the refresh. I can't wait to try one on. The size should be perfect for my 7-1/4" (18.4cm) wrist. I love the new lumed indices, the hands are SO much better, and the more equally sized subdials is a win. My biggest issue will be choosing between the colorways! I love them all for different reasons.
I'm going to be honest, I didn't see the part where the older design of it was an homage spare the tricompax design? I think the newer one is actually closer to a homage title. The bezel is shaped like a daytona, the lugs are shaped like the ones on the daytona, there is lume on all the markers just like a daytona. If it was not for the dial having almost like a detroit mint mechanic bullhead starburst design and original speedtimer red sub dial/chronograph hands I'd say this is was a clear homage to the daytona, even then in my eyes it kind of is now. Honestly I don't get seiko, they know how to make a chonorgraph and I don't ask for much. Give me the pogue yellow/bronze (Not gold!) sunburst dial, pepsi bezel, vertical bicompax layout and a day/date window with solar and I'd be happier than a pig in shyt. Thd old speedtimer is nearly speedmaster iconic for a very good reason, why leave such easy money on the table? Ideally though, I think I'd want the newer automatic chronographs with the starburst yellow and a inner pepsi tachymeter. That would be close enough for me I suppose.
to be honest on photos the old model looks nicer but i found in person it was actually the new one i think looks better and more refined. maybe its the pop of red colour or the sized a little nicer.
I have big wrists and I tried on the 39 and it was too small. I love the look, and love the red accents better. I'll have to take a look at the 41. The 21mm lugs though? Ugh!
I prefer the looks of the old SSC813, I don’t like the new ones silverish white dial and the fact it’s thicker. Also that bezel is too thick, it’s made the dial look really small.
You can adjust the chrono hand by pulling out the crown, and I believe holding A button then pushing B to go around. I believe I showed the procedure in a sumo chrono video
Personally I prefer the SSC769 better, which I feel it should have been in this comparison, even though the bracelet is not up to the rest but the overall design, particularly the dial, is more Seiko and less Rolex which is a missed opportunity for the Speedtimer line.
Yes. Depending on the quality of the anodizing. You could anodize aluminum to be as hard as DIAMOND! Tudors anodizing is very strong. Here is a company who anodizes aluminum. aka the memo: clhann.com/what-is-anodizing/
I like the SSC911 aesthetic with red touch but the date placement is a dealbreaker for me it feel out of place. I know that it will always bother me when looking at it 😂
I got the 38mm exactly because of the size and nod to the old daytona. It just looks the business on wrist as the bigger ones are not as classy… red accents and silver dial makes it more moder and in my eyes therefore worse.
This is why you shouldn’t let anxiety get to your head. The speed timer obviously looked similar to the Daytona, but the longer that I looked at it the more I could see that it was its own thing. Man, Seiko really messed with this watch smh…
I have to say I like the older one. The chapter ring is quite unique which makes it stand out and the smaller size is better for my wrist. But I agree with the useless 24h dial and Seiko could have put more lume. Overall though both are great watches for the price. Great review, thanks.
I bought the old model after waiting for this one to come out, I just preferred the straight panda dial in the smaller size, on mine the bezel is not aluminium it’s stainless with a black finish, I believe the new version is the same!
The 24-hour sub dial is a HUGE negative, but I pulled the trigger anyway. Would have been nice to have kept the blue lume. I don't know what's wrong with Seiko, but I'm addicted anyway.
Until Seiko can improve their bracelets, they should keep lug width at 20mm so I can easily change to straps. Otherwise I won’t buy it unless I really really really really really like the design of the watch.
I bought one for myself 👍 The bracelet adjustment isn't the best but overall I'm satisfied... Any idea why the second hand (bigger ones) stops at 12? The small second hand at 9 side seems to be working fine.... But not sure why the main second hand stops exactly at 12
Found a SSC909 for $500. As someone who wears a 43mm Seiko, the SSC909 seemed small at first. It's definitely grown on me fast and like the classy, smaller look!
I own an SSC813. It's the first time I've ever suggested not having a complication. I'm wearing it wight now. The date window is illegible and should not have been added. It would also have made a cleaner dial. The bezel on the newer model is why I didn't want the 9 series. When it comes to a sub $1k watch, I prioritize certain qualities over others. I want the best band possible with a sapphire crystal, then the movement. I'd rather have a $650 quartz watch with good specs, than an Automatic with a terrible band and case. The Tissot PRX in quartz is intriguing, the PRX in with a mechanical movement is not.
I'll have to take the 813 for sure. The fact that seiko had to make another one because of it resembling the Daytona is awesome. Those who own this will have a piece of history haha.
It's a pity the 24hr dial could not be set at a different time to the main dial turning it into a GMT. Just purchased the previous model with 30% off and 0% finance for 12 months which may as well be another 5% discount. Can't beat that for money at all.
I prefer the looks of the new ones dial and hand set, i prefer the bezel from the old one along with the lume and the 39mm size. So which one do i want??? The Old model with the new models dial, hand set and size.. Thanks alot Seiko... Now i cant buy either....🤬
This isn't a panda, it's SILVER. The old bisel it's better, the new it's 3/4 grey, i don't like the red touch on 991. The size and proportions on 813 it's perfect!
The 813 might be a clone of the Daytona, but it's a better looking clone. Which might be unfair towards Rolex, since the 813 is one of the best looking chronographs (I've seen).
I don't think they used 911 because it was an emergency - I think it was likely a Porsche 911 reference to keep the motor racing comparison with the Daytona.
The old one actually has the same magnetic resistance according to seiko manual: Magnetic resistance: 4,800 A/m. Where did you see that it does not? I'm curious
Which Speedtimer line is better for you??? If you want to see the LIMITED EDITION BLUE DIAL here : ua-cam.com/video/u2puQP3maP8/v-deo.html -Falling
Where did you get this emoji?
I prefer the old series, as compact chronograph is hard to find.
very true!
Yes! Ive waited a long time for a “budget” chrono that fits my skinny wrist
First gen has better proportions
I still think the 813 is better looking, and I'd stick with that one, but having more options is never a bad thing 😉
Yeah me too, 813 is better.
813 is so iconic, the proportions are sweeet and everything about it is perfect. Got it a month ago and loving it

I prefer the size and styling of the older model. The older model is sporty but can be dressed up easier than the new one IMO. New one is too sporty
Prefer the old one in every way, far more balanced proportions to me although the red chronograph hand is a pretty cool splash of colour.
I know it’s subjective, but the 813 is so much better looking
Totally agree. The 813 is clean looking
Thanks Seiko for not putting mechanical movements in either of those two nice watches 👍

Prefer by far the first serie ... more of a vintage size ... I solved the strap issue by getting strapcode rollball strap
Mmmm. I'm thinking about the Crystal trophy with roll ball
@yvesleroy5740 can you link or give some more info? Thx!!

You know the date disc is so sunken in that even the white on the old I thought looked black. Looking at my thumbnail it also looks black
Wait so can you leave the second hand running on the new one ? Or is it only that small subdial which shows you thst seconds hand
A nice middle ground option is the JDM SBPY165 chronograph. 41mm, but slightly larger crystal/watch face due to the thinner bezel.
I have a 7.5 inch wrist, will this fit well or be too small?
I think the 813 is a better choice for me. The case size of the 911 just doesn't do it for me although I will admit - it does look better.

Great video. I have the SSC813 and just ordered the SSC911. Really liking these Seiko models.

Both look good, but i think for my wrist the 813 would be a better fit. I am envious of the lume on the 911.

The new version is so much better. Recently bought the Pogue and I couldn’t be happier.
813 for me. Better contrast and understated appearance.
Nah i way prefer the 813. 20mm lug, better proportions, better dial. I think the new bezel is too thick. Still nice!

This is why you shouldn’t let anxiety get to your head. The speed timer obviously looked similar to the Daytona, but the longer that I looked at it the more I could see that it was its own thing. Man, Seiko really messed with this watch smh…
Both nice watches.
Thank you for this video. I almost bought the older version.
You are welcome!
I have to say I like the older one. The chapter ring is quite unique which makes it stand out and the smaller size is better for my wrist. But I agree with the useless 24h dial and Seiko could have put more lume. Overall though both are great watches for the price. Great review, thanks.
Will this new version come out in a white dial rather than a silver?
Sure. Any time now.
I'm waiting for a white dial with a black bezel!

Is it taka meter or tech aww meter?
I think both are acceptable
the bezel on the newer one is more like a daytona imo
Yeah I can see that. But overall as a whole, looks more seiko-ish to me. But it will probably be nicknamed seiko-tona 2 or something
I'll have to take the 813 for sure. The fact that seiko had to make another one because of it resembling the Daytona is awesome. Those who own this will have a piece of history haha.
The first one all the way!

Is it a version 2 or a separate model??
I think it is a new version but not sure. I think both will still be in production as long as they sell well.
Glad to hear someone hating on 24 hour subdials. They're a plague.
that 24h dial in this and meca-quartz always make me wonder :(
I love this watch but I really wish they'd gone with a pure white dial...
I have the 911, so far I like it. Date number however, is small for my liking. I really want the SNR049
Cant understand the thickness of this watch...as a quarts it shouldve managed to keep it under 12mm atleast.
Just brought one and once again just like all the other 3 Seiko’s i got rid of previously the chapter ring is misaligned. Seiko’s qc is shit house.
Love the new one and would buy it in a heartbeat if it wasn’t for that 3/4 grey bezel! Why?, just Why?!
As one of the folks with small wrist, I will lean more to SSC813
This isn't a panda, it's SILVER. The old bisel it's better, the new it's 3/4 grey, i don't like the red touch on 991. The size and proportions on 813 it's perfect!
The proportions look off on the new version. I much prefer the 39mm version.
Wish they made this in Titanium...
Just to add the new SSC911 has the Magnetic Resistance 4,800 A/m old one doesn't
The old one actually has the same magnetic resistance according to seiko manual: Magnetic resistance: 4,800 A/m. Where did you see that it does not? I'm curious
The new model came out about a week after I bought the older model....smh
813's bezel is way better. love the "fold" which is absent in the new 911
