The use of the drone to show how the PAPI lights work was cool.
That you sooo much. I’m a visual learner and never understood how these work. I originally thought they were radar use and actually change color . Instead of how they actually work . Thanks again
are you freaking kidding me? The control panel just sits out there in the open and any dumb seagull can walk up and peck at the number pad and change the PAPI! OMG. ROFL that is some high security there! LOL
Interesting. I worked on installing runway lighting on the ice runways at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. I’m on my way to the Marshall Islands to redo the runway lights there and thought I better do some research to see how different they might be from what we had out on the ice. They’re pretty different. Looks like I’ve got a bit more research to do so I don’t get in over my head.

So how'd it go? Did you get it figured out?
Nice video. Even as I'm a pilot, I never seen one up close.
I have always wonder how they worked. Now when landing I'll always remember this video.
Great explanation! Thanks.
I though these things new where your aircraft was this entire time, good video.
That was an awesome video. So what you're saying the one closest to the runway will turn red first and as you fly lower they will sequentially get red as lites go from right to left
You don't want 4 red lights ☠️
Excellent video. I always assumed these used some sort of Radar to ping the aircraft.
My GDL 50 stuck to a glass coaster and lifted the coaster 2 feet off the desk when i went to load my flight bag then dropped and dented my desk and what have you. I agree, stickiness level 99.
I always assumed it was two lights with a solid piece that blocks one or the other.
Such stupidly simple tech and incredibly useful. Just lights and lenses.
My friend wants to know why the cover of the light extends over the front. Can you enlighten us?
Just explaned it perfectly, tysm!
Thank you, that helped.
Happy to help!!
I like how the navy calls their system the meatball
thanks appreciate
Great vid man!
That was a good video. Thank you.
Great video. Can you please explain the P1 P2 P3 Eye to wheel height (EWH). Thank you!
Man, you told me flying drones around the airport was totally legal... Now Gatwick is shut down, and they're looking for me.
OMG....that was you!?!?! (insert omg emoji here)
Ha ha, brilliant comment!
So when you fly into Sarasota and you need approach footage let me know. I can help you out.
Love your Vids!
You're awesome Jon
Great one, thanks !!
This whole time I thought they were powered by unicorn pooh. Damnit.
1:37 why does this man walking sound like eating in minecraft? lol
Hi Joe - Old video I know, but still a good one. What drone did you use for the video? I'm trying to recreate your video of a PAPI and I'm getting the red washed out and unable to see the thing at all at a distance. Our guess is image processing, but wondering if you had to make some adjustments. Thanks!
Mind blown
Does the colour of papi change if we change horizontal position
It does not. The lights will change depending on you position relative to the glideslope.
we dont touch them stands on all 4 of the concrete slabs
Nice video
PAPI's are great. But they can make you a bit lazy (speaking from experience). Look at the PAPI's and the runway sight picture. Landing at more.... ahem... "basic" airfields with no PAPI's, it's good to have that ingrained sight picture of a proper approach so you are not caught out by the lack of tech LOL.
When you got yelled at for flying at the airport, get you have your waiver or authorization handy?
Nice video as always. About one of the comments you made in your video though: Are you serious that you can fly a drone in an airfield in US/Canada without any permission? This act is strictly prohibited in the UK. In fact, that could act as a fast way to the jail. I always had this question How people like yourself, MzeroA and others use drone during their productions. I got my answer now :-)
Thanks for the video. Tower doesn’t give you any troubles for walking within RSA, or the Runway was shutdown? :)
No tower!
Great topic. It is very easy to forget how complicated those things are, and when we are in the glide path We just care about light colors:). White we are alright, Red We can end up Dead.
Wow! Had NO idea how they worked. Only fly flight sim. Thought they somehow sensed the aircraft..LOL.
Whats that big scar on your right forearm?
why does the speech audio sound like I am inside the cockpit?
I suspect he was using some sort of waterproof enclosure on the camera and didn’t have a mic on the outside... it happens...
whats the difference between VASI & PAPI?
Hesham S I think VASI uses two rows of lights while with PAPI system all happens in one row 4 lights. On the airports I know all VASI were constantly being replaced with PAPI, which supposedly give a better precision.
Y diff degrees on diff lights when the standard is 3degrees GS
If they were all set the same you would see the same light from all of them. The one furthest from the run way has the lowest degree so that it turns from Red to white the soonest. As you get closer the degrees increase. If you notice 3 degrees falls between the middle two lights. This means in a 4 light system when you see two white and two red you are right on 3 degrees.
Nice video but man, the audio is terrible!

Unfortunately I'm color blind,
norman matura the you can't become a pilot. It's only useful for them during landing so you have nothing to worry about.
I am color deficient, I have a red/green perception issue. Of course this just means you can't fly at night without an instructor.
No 1 eyeball is a better system
Not when it's pitch black out and you can't see what's between you and the runway and you know the runway is surrounded by tall trees. Just saying.....
@@fahnestockjohn I'm sure they are useful for the big boys. I have a strictly VFR microlight licence!
They are a great tool to assist pilots of not only large aircraft, but smaller ones as well. Puts you on a nice stable approach to hit the 1000' markers
Who disliked this video?
What a waste of time - no teaching how it works.
Hey Adriaan, thanks for watching! What explanation exactly were you looking for?
What distance should it be mounteed from begining of runway??
In the touchdown zone, generally 800-1,200' from the threshold
