- LiFePO4 batteries are at the heart of our off grid lithium setup with a huge thank you to Battleborn.
We make room for 1350ah of Lithium before shoehorning them into the bilge. Lots of near toe smashing and back breaking hip twisting lifting and they are in. next step, cutting crimping and routing ~80 feet of 4/0 cables 😬
So what did we get:
5x 8d 270ah Battleborn LiFePO4
2x 12/3000 Victron Multiplus
2x Lynx Distributor
2x Solar Charge Controllers
Plus a bunch of goodies to connect it all and help it all talk to each other!
You can find it all on battlebornbatteries.com/

Here's what we think we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. See • We Buy a SALVAGE SAILB... for how we came to own her!

How we've started making subtitles
try.rev.com/3q9Tjr
Hi Brett and Jade. I recently moved in with my elderly aunt to help take care of her. She lives near a boat yard, so whenever I get a chance I take a walk there and admire the sailboats I am 62 yo now and always dreamed of owning a boat like EVA but life sorta got in the way and it was never really in the cards.
Long story short, my visits to the boat yard got me googling about sailboats and I somehow ran into your VLOG. As I watched many many of your videos I started to realize that your DIY boatyard is the same one I visit almost daily.
In episode 4 @ 7:46 in you can see my aunts house in the background as you two are walking up the road. It's the white house on the left, it is the last one on the left before the boatyard. I would have liked to say hello and tell you that I have enjoyed all of your work, including the awesome videos as well as the beautiful work you've done on EVA (and love the doggos too). It appears I may have just missed you though. BTW, Jade reminds me a bit of my niece, she has the same smile. Anyway, I will keep my eyes open and continue enjoying your videos as you move forward.
Jade. I just watched the episode in which you mentioned people giving cruel inappropriate comments and it saddened me. You kind of said it all about how you don’t take it on, that’s great. These people are criticizing you because they feel bad about themselves. Men who are not capable of achieving the multitudes of skills, abilities, happiness, wisdom and kindness, that you do. These men are threatened by you especially because part of their disfunction is to think women are inferior. So this type of comments can be expected from people who feel they are not enough.. Their comments say nothing about you they only speak of them. I am a 67 year old man with many artistic and craft skills and I have nothing but awe, respect, and happiness for you, it’s people like you who are changing the world just by being yourself. Keep it up.❤️
Wow. Do you appreciate what Battleborn did for you there. That is some gift. Could not have happened to a nicer couple. Love your channel Jade and Brett.
Good for you Battleborn!
What I absolutely love and admire about jade is that he is a beautiful female who is not afraid to get her hands dirty she's not afraid of work. He just picks up that battery and goes off with it. I've seen her on the boat in other episodes he's not afraid to break a nail I'll get down in it. I can't say the same thing about many many females do you have any idea how many females would have stood there and looked at the batteries and they looked at Brett like honey I think you better get with the program trying to get these batteries no she just goes down and picks them up herself and goes off to the car with it I love it dude you're lucky to have her she's a keeper
Two items of note: 1) When Jade carried the electrical cabling in and made the comment about dead bodies she played the perfect straight man which was very funny, 2) Brett, your explanation of critical cable length was the best I have heard. You guys are doing a great job! Thanks for being you.
WOW! Each of those old AGM batteries must weigh more than Jade does. Seeing her throw around the new LiPO batteries like they were toys was awesome.
“That’s where you’re mind goes”
Had me laughing so much. Been watching from episode 1. Love your videos. Much love from north Wales in the UK.
Those smiles when you opened up the battery boxes and laid everything out in the hanger-Priceless! "That's where your mind goes?" You have to admire a girl that is always thinking (lol). Thank you for the fun Friday evening video.
“That’s where your mind goes?” Said with such surprise 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 thanks for the laugh. Great to see you almost have 100K subs and also that it’s so true that “the harder you work the luckier you get”. You two deserve all the “luck” you are receiving. Well done, keep smiling. Thank you for posting. Fair winds, Elaine ⛵️❤️
I definitely watched that over and over lol
Very funny
You've got the coolest wife bro.😊 That was a compliment to you both.
Lfp batteries are life changing. We built our 20kw (32 cells 800ah @24v) system 8 years ago, before most people had heard of lfp. Many were scared of it and didn't understand. We do not have a generator on board and we have air con, watermaker, hot water heater etc etc. You are going to love them.
Your “Holy yessness” was epic.. LOL love it 🤣
Dingo's favourite spot on the boat is the one location you cant sneak off the boat without him knowing, clever boy :)
Thank You for paying so much attention to wire lengths. I have been an electrician for just under 50 yr doing mostly heavy industrial construction and 4/0 wire is frequently the smallest wires I work with. Equal lengths is critical to balancing the currents on conductors. 1 thing I do not get the point of on the last several electrical DIYs is the MASSIVE 12VDC battery banks and size/ampacity of equipment to service them. To me it would make much more sense to have a 300/600ah 12VDC House bank (maybe Hybrid , Lead-acid and Lithium) and a 500/600ah 48VDC Lithium distribution Bank. Then all major loads (Propulsion, Windlass, Watermaker, Inverter/Charger, Fridge/Freezers, Elect Outboard ?, etc...) would run off the 48VDC Dist Bank, a DC/DC charger off the 48VDC Bank would keep the smaller 12 VDC House topped up at all times for all you Lites and Navigation, etc... All charging (Solar, Alternator, Shore Power, etc..) would run into the 48VDC Dist Bank. This would great reduce fuse, wire and equipment sizes and weights making it all very much easier to install and maintain. Also having the higher voltage Dist Bank servicing all those larger loads leads to higher efficiancy of that very much lighter equipment thereby reducing your overall displacement (more efficiant sailing) and you still have aprox the same 1200ah setup. To me it is like only having Piggy Banks that hold quarters for all your savings. Fine if you are only going shopping for some milk and bread, but you would need a pickup truck to do a larger grocery run, where if most of your Piggy Banks were for $1:00 coins you would only need a wheelbarrow
You need a decent set of cutters to cut rigging but for the heavy cables, use an angle grinder. This gives a nice cut that does not compress the cable making it easier to fit the crimp-on (or solder if you have enough heat) terminals. Look after you back, good to see BOTH of you use good posture to pick up those batteries. Stay well guys.
Not sure if I would do that without looking into the contamination of the copper (tinned ??) conductor
And that's probably MTW wire. (Machine tool wiring)
I.e battery cables.
In a pinch a side grinder with a cut off wheel will work for 19 strand THHN.
But for MTW...
Get a good set of Cable cutters.. Greenlee...
"If I needed to get rid of a body, all I have to do is wrap it up in this cable."
Brett, sleep with one eye open brother.
And if your walking around deck be sure you're tied off to the boat... don't let her sneak up behind you.
She's just waiting for you to get the batteries hooked up.... Then, well, you know...😂🤣😂🤣.
😁Leaving a comment each week is going to get boring for you 2. Cause how many times can you say i just adore you 2 so much🙈😂Love seeing you each week none the less. Stay safe sweethearts.
Not a dog (or really an animal person) but your dogs are so well-behaved. They seem to understand you and move when you need them to. Maybe an episode or segment on them and how you work that magic.
Battle Born !! Off Grid Super Hero !!
FYI, the scrap yard will give you cash for old batteries. Good choice of batteries. It’s so cool once you have your solar panels wired looking at your battery monitor and seeing 100%!
That’s over $12,000 in free batteries including taxes and shipping. Nice score guys! I’d be grinning like that too. Smart move for Battleborn, best advertising money ever spent based on who watches this channel.
Love the description "bucket" vs battery, you totally nailed it!
Great decision. Fair winds and following seas. Enjoy.
Currently surfing Battle Born’s site since I’m in the middle of the same project. Great video guys! Stoked that you found them to join your project 🙌
One tough lady 💪.
Love you guys.
I have install many 24cell battery arrays. When cutting the wire, tape both sides of the wire , then cut between the tape. The battery connectors all should have dielectric grease and test the connection with a voltmeter. Great project.
Man that was a beautiful thing don't you love it when a plan comes together.
The dogs look well adapted to boat life. Different cable lengths have different resistance.
So that is why your dogs are always tugging at the leash "cable," they are just trying to check on the resistance; clever, clever doggos. Always checking for the Q.
Really nice, good sponsor👌🏻, take care of girlfriends back!!!, see you soon👍👍
"That's where you mind goes?!?!?" The way he said it was so concerning lmfao
I've worked on a lot of different things in my 53 years, I'm a believer when it comes to over building something. If you want it to last, That effort is never waisted! One step at a time. You both have done an exceptional job! If their is a way to protect your boat from a lightening strike don't hesitate to get it done.
I'm super excited to see next week's episode.....it's like we are back in the boat fixing episodes and I'm kind of a geek about it all.
Wow! Well over 10k in lithium!! Just goes to show yall be blowing up on the UA-cam scene! Congrats and keep going!
Hi u 2! no matter how equal the lenths of the cables are there will be some difference in internal resistance between the batteries. So you will need a balancing device anyway to keep them at the same SOC.
And guys, take care of your generator, because there's no way you could fit enough solar panels on a sailboat to charge that bank in a day's sunshine. I have 31 panels serving my 860 amp hour bank, and mine are flooded batteries, which means I can only drain them halfway. It's not night you have to worry about; it's cloudy days. And don't count on the rated output of the panels; that's full sun, high noon, pointed straight at the sun. When it's really hot (like in the tropics ;) ) they lose 20% efficiency.
Just be mindful of your power use on those cloudy days (and when the panels are in the shade of those big beautiful sails), and keep plenty of generator fuel on board. And keep up the good work!
Nobody has worked as hard as you guys, whether it was months of rebuilding or a couple of days of moving batteries. Jade, I hope the hip has recovered. Always love the smiles, joking and laughs no matter the problems at hand. Be well guys.
Great video, love to see you two so happy and enjoying the life!
Nice analogy on resistance. Great video and the interaction and enthusiasm is a joy to watch.
See.... and you had second thoughs (many times) about YT being worth it. You guys definately deserve the generosity from Battleborn!
YAY, Battleborn. This is a big project, and will keep you busy for a while.
great job thanks for sharing...! I was a electrician my younger life !
Bret, it was great to get a chance to chat with you last weekend at the boat show, thanks for the time and comments. The batteries are going to be awesome!! Can't wait until we see how you hooked them all up. Safe sailing as you head south, and don't be to harsh on use still up in New England this winter!!
Interesting to learn about those batteries! Happy sailing!!
Incredibly, galactically and stupendously great video! I got tired and took a nap after watching that one! You guys are a crazy great couple!
Congratulations to both you and to Battleborn for recognizing each others' worth!
That really is a nice set, especially when solar panels are added. With the right tools ( 20:05 ) it's a easy job.👌
Thank you for the lesson on the new batteries very well interesting learnt a lot👍
I've watched your "how much did it cost" video and compared that to boats on the market, and watched some of your labor. I'm not sure that economically this was the most efficient way to get this boat, but Damn, you've done a great job! Enjoy watching you.
Battle Born you guys rock, best Li systems in the market.
Good choice guys.
Congratulations on such a score with "BATTLEBORN"! The grin on your faces even as you were working so hard was priceless! Great filming, and you are correct the you will remember this and absolutely love the power you will soon have onboard!
"Holy yesness" 🤣🤣🤣 I'm so stealing that 😉🤣🤣
Great video, love watching you guys 👍
Great episode!
You will be heading South soon. So happy for you both. I was happy to see you using proper form when lifting and carrying those batteries. You are both a true inspiration in determination to achieve your dream and to do it with positivity and Love.
You guys are awesome, so much fun to watch, so entertaining, you brighten my day...
Hi Guys, never seen you so excited about a project, such huge grins , Cheers, have fun.
It was so nice to run into you guys at the boat show, it was fun to talk to you in person since we have been watching you on UA-cam for some time, looks like an awesome battery setup
great job guys. good luck getting out of the cold...
String for checking wire length. Simple, accurate, cheap. I smiled seeing that. That’s serious power there. Nice!
I would recommend that you add wind turbines to your solar plans so that you can maintain the batteries at night and for extended stormy periods. S/V Delos employs them very successfully in their Ketch-rigged boat. Those Li-Ion batteries are so much lighter than the eight Group 8D AGM batteries in my motor coach and much more capable.
Yeah!!! Diamond Natural, my dog's name is Clark and he loves it!
You guys are amazing! ❤😊
Brilliant 👏 👏 👏
Truly enjoying this channel. Keep up the hard work you two-- then enjoy!
Well you won't need weights day for awhile! Oh to be young and strong again. Congratulations!
The house I lived in is powered by Battleborn. Off grid, batteries died right after full lock down. Called them, met home owner at factory in Sparks Nevada and got new house batteries.
AWESOME COMPANY! (They are only about 3 hours away by car.)
I believe you are right this is your guys' destiny. You are so impressive, great examples of the human race. What a strong team and to be able to share your love with each other 24/7 is just about perfect as you can get. Can you tell I'm one of your great fans? Love you both, keep up the great work! What a beautiful couple, RSE
I swear the 2 of you are amazing beautiful ppl? Thanks for sharing your lives with us and Fare winds an following sea's ✌🏻💗😊❣️
Dude you are so lucky... you have a stud for a wife! Just awesome. Happy for you guys.
Man you guys can't catch a break you have a noreaster up that way now. Have a safe trip to Maryland....Stay sharp and stay safe.
I was very happy I got to meet you at the You Tube booth Friday. I have enjoyed watching you bring your boat back to life. I wish I had half your energy. Jade, you are a Dynamo. I plan on adding Lithium batteries to my boat when I get it. I enjoyed watching you getting ready for it and I look forward to seeing how it turned out.
Exciting times ! Great episode. Good luck storming the castle!
Happy for you guys! That's first class
next week I'm going to say ... Congrats on 100k subscribers..
Let's make it happen. Everyone here convince a a friend to subscribe right now!!
Yessss!!!!! So close!!! Let's get them there THIS WEEK!
Do you know how blessed/lucky you both are?! OMG!
I have the Victron in my campervan. really great piece of tech. Great job guys.
Aahhhh this is my favorite kind of project!
I enjoy the heavy wiring. I’m looking forward to seeing the cutter you do get. I got a great one off of Amazon that would cut that 4/0 wire like butter.
Being a mechanic I was always told," if you can explain what your doing in layman's terms and another person who otherwise wouldn't have a clue actually gets it, then you know what your doing". That was one of the best analogy's of how electricity works I've ever heard!
Holy crap your going to need a lot of solar to keep those charged & wow two 3000w Amps is more than what comes standard on 45ft catamarans. Congratulations and good for you!
The "Grave Detail" Dad joke... I approve of this
It is very interesting to find out about these batteries. I look forward to you getting them wired up and hope the trip south goes with just enough excitement 😀 All the best
Another entertaining episode !!!!!
I think you’ll need to eat lots of Wheatys to use those beautiful little, emphasis on “little”, wire cutters on 4/0 cables. Everything was looking so good time wise. I hope someone close to you s your dilemma and lends a hand. You once again have made my day. The sheer joy you show, even with the it’s bits you wire cutters, always lightens my spirits. Thanks again,
Nice job and kudos indeed to Battleborn for coming on board. I confess that I was feeling a little nervous watching that 500lb plus load in the floor of the dinghy and worrying that the dinghy might not like the weight..... I’ve seen it happen before to a couple who were loading new batteries up in Port Klang - about $1000 of batteries ended up on the bottom of the Klang River after the floor gave out just a few metres from the dock
Ouch that would be gutting!
Did you see the video on this dingy? It is ridiculously oversized for a cruising boat. They have a 25hp outboard amd it isn't too big for this dinghy. It is more workboat than dinghy. I bet they didn't even overload it with all this stuff on it by the official factory nameplate numbers -plus Jade and Brett themselves don't even come close to 300lbs put together.
Jade is awesome! She is a strong young lady🏋️♀️
That where you're mind goes... 🤣👌
So incredibly jealous. Good for you guys
Great explanation of the wiring, you did your research well! I also like the redundancy in inverters and chargers. To make it perfect, a separated emergency bank located at a higher position would be helpful, because given some water intrusion, you will lose this bank and not be able to run electric pumps. For regular operation things look very promising.
good stuff
Great video. It’s a funny thing upgrading to LiFePO4, such a good feeling and the only real difference is the huge % remaining all the time 😆. The charger inverters are the thing most noticeable as the power sockets work all the time! Amazed how much power you’ve installed. I did 400 Ah and you have several times that. so you are really able to use electricity without stress at all - good job!
Good job🐳
At 17:10 you are a hilarious lady!🥳
Felt unrest when you sir didn't flow. Better be cool if you want this fine, smart lady to stay around!
Belittling is just ugly to watch really...i am direct i know, i want you to succeed🙏peace
All that battery moving made me a bit tired need a nap now. Can hardly wait for the install, good video guys.
Wow that’s a lot of batteries good for you!!
Reno represent! Battle Born!
What an amazing gift! Yall are so lucky and I'm happy for you two!!! You deserve them. You 2 have worked so hard and this is going to be a game changer!!! Now, to get them wired. It's pretty step by step simple or it seemed to be when I watched Brian from Delos put theirs in. But I'm just a virtual friend and subscriber so what do I know lol.. But I have faith in you guys and I'm sure if you need assistance it's just a call away. Now, get er done!!! :)
Awesome power bank 😉
Thumbs up your joy is catching
Congratulations on your "powerful" system, Lithium & Victron are awesome. Another quality job well done by team Evans! A tip I learned from a pro that you may like @11:18 for any future painting projects that you need to cover wires & or hoses from paint, aluminum foil works great. Fair Winds & fallowing Seas ~~~⛵
Jade my mind went there with you with the body and the cable 🤪😜😂🤣
Jade, you may look like a frail little girl... but you're an Amazon! And always with a beautiful smile. You two are tops.
