How to refill a grease gun

  • The method I show here on how to refill a grease gun works for many types of guns. I currently use four different types, from pneumatic to large hand lever types and it works for all of them.
The grease gun that I show in the video is the Advanced Tool Design model ATD-5002 pistol grip grease gun. Bought from Amazon about 2 years ago and it is still working great.
    Amazons product page: amzn.to/2yIywoS
    What you will need...
A pair of disposable gloves (or ones that you don't mind getting grease on)
A new tube of grease. The type depends on what you are greasing.
Disclaimer: All products used in this video were purchased by me and all video content is my own and has been edited by me, Matthew Fox.

Thanks for making a simple process in a short video, too many people want to make 11 minute videos of this.

    This is an exemplary video.
    I'd like to see one more step added;
probably 70 percent of the refills I have done in the past fifty years,
and with every grease gun I have used,
it has been necessary to bleed off the air
    trapped in the gun.
And I've never found a convenient and reliable method of doing so.

Don’t screw in the barrel all the way. Release the handle and turn it so it grabs the plunger inside the barrel. Then push on the handle and grease should start squeezing through the threads. There should be no air left. Then tighten the barrel down and release the plunger so the handle can be pushed inside.

My 72 year old Father enjoyed watching your video as a refresher. It has been a while since He replaced a grease cartridge. He mentioned that His grease gun is same model as yours. Now He can grease His repaired John Deere 24T baler and put it to bed 'till next Summer.

Good video but I would like to offer the following. Grease guns I have used in the past used the pull out lever to actually compress the grease, so that a positive pressure was applied to the small piston that supplies the grease. For some reason most of these grease guns allow the piston on the rear spring pullback to slide right thru the grease and do very little. A trick i have applied is to add more grease to the cartridge, this is a small fix, but a better fix would be to find a rubber washer the same size as the hole in the cartridge, and then allow the spring loaded disc at the bottom of the gun to do a better job.

This is my go to video saved in my notes for doing this but question: anyone else have to put tip against something in order to get the new tube of grease to get the grease to start pumping out? That’s what it takes for mine if I don’t I just keep pressing the handle forever even after I’ve pressed the air button

  • @HDDforme

You can remove the old tube easier by leting the rod in, most times you can shoot it into the trash but at least it comes out enough to grab the outside of cartridge. Good video
