I work at a big box pet store and I always suggest your videos to people who have fish questions. Y'all are a great resource!
i do too and the last thing i do is recommend any one source, the people that come in havent done any research and the info we tell them is their research so i tell them to read and watch as many sources as possible, there is no right to this hobby but there is a wrong so you want to let people figure out whats right for them on their own
@lruddy8820 Oh, yeah, of course. I give them a bunch, but I'm commenting on a KGTtropicals video so I highlighted them lol. I agree, unfortunately most people that come in have no clue what they're doing
So I have a fluval 107 in a 10 Gallon Betta and Amano Shrimp tank. Without Modification, that current is definitely too strong. I picked up the fluval spray bar kit too, used 1 bar and pulled the cap out of it so it's a flow thru and the spray holes add even more flow reduction. On the end of the spray bar I put on a coarse Sponge prefilter and that diffuses the flow Extremely well. The 107 is on full flow and my current is just enough for the stem plants in the back to flutter their leaves down the back wall where the spray bar holes are aimed. The Shrimp have zero problems and seem to be loving their Home. I haven't bought the Betta yet, but after dropping in some Accu Clear and watching the current of the water as it spreads. it's a very slow flow in the tank. ( yes, this filter is completely OVERKILL for a 10g betta tank. BUUUUT I will eventually upgrade to a 20 gallon and this filter will be there for it)
Drill out the holes on the spray bar to reduce current. Did it to my Eheim pro 3 on my 75G. Worked like a charm.
@@GOwBorgs I didn't even think of drilling out the holes, great suggestion. I might give that a try with the other bar, then I can remove the prefilter sponge from the end. but that filter is just MORE media for the bateria to grow on, and the shrimp have been feeding on it too.
Another great video! I love Carl... it would be funny to make a montage of all of the "cat-bombs" you've had over the years... adorable!
I’ve tried lots of different filters of different brands and I keep going back to hobs. The water looks great and they’re easy to maintain.
Go with a central filter system for a bank of tanks (sand with U.V. and Ozone along with auto water changing systems). A good medium size rapid sand filter with a variable motor will be able to handle around 5 k gallons of water.
The tank looks amazing! The new filter system seems to be doing the job.
I'm doing this on my tanks:
29 gallon tank = Tidal 55
45 gallon tank = Tidal 75
65 gallon tank = Tidal 110
75 gallon turtle tank = 2x Cascade 1000 canister filter
95 gallon tank = an FX6 + A wavemaker (around 30 mbunas)
125 gallon south American tank = 2x FX4 + 2 wavemakers
180 gallon peacock/ hap tank = 2x FX6 + 2 wavemakers
I'd use a sump on a tank over 210 gallons.
Wow... the 360 looks fantastic 👌
Just bought a prostar rimless 230 which is a rimless 180 gallon with a 50 gallon sump. It came with all the plumbing, minimal setup. It has silencers in the over flow. No noise. If you open cabinet there is a little noise where water enters sump but, no noise when cabinets closed. I have in my living room. I added a 6x6 and two basements jacks below… my discus getting upgrade from the 75
heavy planted low stock 63 gallon doesn't need a filter just a bubbler for water movement. however it does have a sponge hidden away seeding in case i need to set up an emergency tank . the 95 US gallon African Cichlid tank however has a Fluval 407 and a tidal 55 running and between them hey do a decent job (sizes may look a bit odd to you that is because i'am UK based and have converted Imperial gallons to US gallons )
I got the FX2 for my 55 gallon tank and it's just perfect, it was pricey but setting it up was a dream and the flow is just right, a gentle breeze that doesn't blow plants and fish around. Just wish it was a bit quieter, it isn't as silent as the Eheim canisters.
I might end up with a 75 eventually, think the FX2 would be a good fit?
@@AgxntAqua The outtake has two outlets for two directions, depending on how many fish and what kind of fish I think the FX2 would do just fine, the flow breezes through your plants gently without bending them forward and fish seem to to enjoy the gentle flow.
Let's talk filtration. On my 210, which wont even make the top five larges tanks in your fish house, I have the following.
• Three (3) Power filters/HOB
• Three (3) Canisters
• One (1) Lg Sponge filter
• One (1) Wave Maker - Which I know isnt a filter, but it helps move the debris out of the dead spots so the filters can pick it up. Needless to say, it's exceptionally blowy in there and nobody minds. Not even the Angelfish.
That seems like overkill ngl
@@AgxntAqua It definitely is.
I bought two tidal 55's for my 75 gallon tank and they didn't fit over the frame of the tank so I bought the tidal 110 and have that on my 75 and ended up using the two 55's on two 10 gallon aquariums. I just keep them turned down which I have mixed feelings on since the motor runs the same speed. They don't create too much current and the tanks stay clean.
Glad to see Carl helping. How many out takes of you getting him off the table?
We have similar filter ideas. In the 40 and below I run SharkPro and Sponge. They back each other up keeps a sponge ready for a hospital or quarantine tank.
Pleco in the background looks really cute
I have a heavily planted 75G that's pretty lightly stocked (I think). 6 angels and 15 red eye tetras. I'm still adding stock so it'll get a little heavier but not much. I really wanted to do a Tidal 75 but the acrylic cut outs wouldn't fit it or any other HOB with an in water motor. We have a lot of power outages where I live so I ended up with an FX2.
Very happy with the decision. I get good flow through the tank but there's not much heavy current so the angels are fine anywhere other than right in front of the outlet
Is the sicce magafiltra (sp?) Pricepoint going to compete with the FX6, too?
My 40B Platys, Yo Yos, and Otos has a sponge filter and a Fluval 407. Heavily planted also.
I run a Tidal 35 on my 10G, but it has neon green rasboras that love to swim in the flow.
Great video! That really did help me a lot! I have a lot to think about 😊
I run a Tidal 75 and supplement it with a Tidal 55. Along with my plants in the tank my water is well filtered and I keep flow turned way down. I still have plenty of room to add fish and was thinking Angelfish for centerpiece potentially but still undecided.
OMGerd, you have personal preferences. How dare you, 😆. I'm glad you did a follow-up on your Tank Talk to clarify. Hope you recover quickly. Did Lisa throw an LED strip light at your toe?
This is an issue ive been trying to figure out myself. I was hoping to find out more at Aquashella but i didnt see the ones that Ive been reaearching.
That being said, I was looking at putting a Oase thermo on a 10 gal. They have an input/output flow adjuster but can you get it down low enough for a 10 gal? I like them because it’s a filter and heater together. They are planted community aquariums.
I'm a big fan of the Marineland canister filters and I have a SunSun 704B
Great video good information thanks👍, have you tried a wave maker in that poop factory behind you to push it all to one corner or will those man eaters break it. Thanks again keep ‘em coming ✌️✌️👍😉
My tanks
29g: some random 75 gallon HOB filter
40g: Tidal 110
65g: Fluval 207 w 75 gallon top fin HOB filter and wave maker
Thanks!
How about adding wave maker directed to sweep your 360 gallons bottom part? Will oscars and sevs can handle such current?
I have the cheap Pet store tetra whisper filters and I believe that they are almost garbage. Lol I’m gonna buy new filters soon.
Last time I came to this channel was around 3 years ago.. awesome beard.
For the price the Tetra min is best for a 55 gallon tank.,You can adjust the water flow and they are quite.🐠🐠🐠🐠🐟🐟🐟
My regular 20 has a hob and a Fluval 207. Platys (too many :), Hatchetfish, and Nerites.
I stick to hang on the back filters... I struggle with cannisters... I need the "Cannister Filter for Dummies" brand cannister filter! lol
I run a Marineland canister filter and a shark internal filter on my 55 gallon Axolotl tank
What is an ideal cannister filter for a 60 gal Mbuna tank? I have used a HOB+wavemaker for a year and then switched to an internal canister filter but I'm still not satisfied with it because my fish spit rocks into it making me do constant maintenance to keep the water flowing.
I can not wait till that mega filtra is out I want it for my 125
Hi, love the channel. I am purchasing a 6 foot x 2 foot x 2 foot aquarium. I will be housing peacocks and haps and planning on using 2 fx6s. Would this work? Thanks
I have 5 oscars in a 300 gallon pond and its fully planted. All depends on the fish
Whatever has changed with the camera settings you look better. Wider, fuller and stronger.
Carl is giving you support!
Serious question. I'm building a 75 gallong tank that's gonna have tetra, danios, small Cory's, and possibly angles what would be the best filter if ima do a moderate amount ot live plants
I have 3 kribensis 1 apistogramma 😅 1 geophagus 1 rainbow shark 2 tigar barbs in a fully Heavily planet tank. And 2 great big sponge filters for know John. Waiting on my tidal 75 to come everyone tell me I have a weird Variety of fish in the same tank but they all seem to get along for now,, my rainbow shark definitely chase the tigar barbs around the tank when I feed them,, the bigger krib and the albino krib chase each other around and my little albino krib chases the apistogramma around and my geophagus. But another great video john sorry about your foot that does suck when you drop something on your toe
I run the Sun Sun 704 B and the bigger Marineland on my 125 African cichlid tank
The most paradoxical thing I've heard in fish keeping is "sponge filters for nano tanks" (>20L). It's the one that makes the most sense... and the one that takes the most space... in a tank that has no space 😂😂😂
Diy sump for monster tank aquarium! More economic and very reliable.. If you do it right!!!
Sorry your hard to listen to John those oscar are beautifully distracting 🤷♂️..
I am unable to successfully keep fish. Betta, neons, guppies, goldfish none do well. 29 gallon tank with just a few fish - doesn’t seem to work. Water parameters are fine, filtration system more than adequate. My friends say I fuss too much over the tank and cause my own problems. Enjoy seeing your tanks and listening to you talk. Guess I’ll just watch and wish. Thanks for your channel.
You could try a few Platys. In my experience, they've been very hardy.
I have the same problem with mucing about in the tanks too often, my solution was my first day off each month I can trim plants, add plants/decor, or rearrange stuff all I want, theother 29 days the only things I do are look, add food, and do weekly 10-20% water changes
The best canister filter on the market is the Hypermax 4500 and it isn’t even close, I have 2 fx6 n a fx4 and they are good. Running hypermax 4500 for 2months now and I’ll never buy another fx filter.
It's your L eft hand for the L ink. Hope that helps you remember John!
Anything Less then 30 Is TINY
Older you get, the longer it hurts,I know, got 20 years on you
❤❤
Pov you have a TIdal 110 on your little 40g tall tank
I don't even own a 40g tall
You need a nicer chair
can't peopole think for themselves ?
Yes, they can. But why would you want to make the same mistake someone else did when they are freely willing to impart information on the exact path you're wanting to take that could make a huge difference in staying on said path or leaving.
I have a FX6 on a 55 and yes, it's very blowy in there. Its mostly in there to seed it for later redistribution and the fish is an adult Red Texas cichlid and it doesnt seem to care.
Jokes on you, I run a 125g with 37 sponge filters, a single betta, and a VERY confused pleco.
My tanks
125g fx5 and fx6 2 wave makers
55g 2 aquaclear 55 2 wave makers
Fluval edge 12g 1 aquaclear 20 1 small sponge filter
Have been running the Tidal-55 on my 29g planted tank for years. Love it. Works well. Edit: I wish seachem would change that blue dial to black. such an eyesore.
I do have it turned down and moved to one side to give my Angel spaces to rest. He's near 8yrs and happy. I run the Tidal towards the left side of the tank, and the sponge on the right. My hillstreams love that thing. breeding like crazy for me.
About to go to a 50 to 60 gallon tank, and deciding filters now. Inclined to go with a Tidal 75, but considering a canister. on the fence about it atm.
I have a Sicce Whale 350 on my 60 gallon tank, but that's because it's full of African shit factories
You want to talk overkill I have two FX6s on a 125. I pretty much ended up making one of them strictly a biological filter. But then again I used to have Oscars and boy are they dirty and they're crap is huge and a lot of it and the python cleaner wants nothing to do with it.
Dude I'm sorry to hear that! Hope you heal quickly. Thank you for the tips! I love your videos, I do get distracted by your gorgeous tank behind you and your cat so I have to watch them a couple of times 😊
you guys are accident prown bless you lol
John I have a bunch of space Eko. I love the easy cleanup. But seem to clog easy. Not sure I’ve ever heard you talk about them
I see the the Sicce Shark Pro has 2 new nano versions! I would love to see a review on those!
I like the hangonback to but I just got a all in 1 tank is that good to
My 10 gallon and 15 gallon have tidal 55 and 2 sponge filters. My 29 gallon has tidal 35 and a 75 with 2 sponge filters. My 36 has a space eko 100 and tidal 75 and 2 sponge filters. Over filter, over feed, over stock baby. All the outlets have custom baffles. My live food tanks have just 1 sponge filter at least.
How does the tidal 55 work on your 15 gallon tank,i have a 15 gallon tank it work out ok
@@MadGuNNer316 it works great. The 35 doesn't have the intake tube so that's the basic reason I've been using the 55. I have custom baffles from Etsy on all my tidal outlets so it's not too powerful of flow.
I have a 20 gal ‘high’ (16.5”) aquarium. Will the Seachem Tidal 35 filter the water at the bottom of the tank without a tube extending down, or would the Tidal 55 be better for a ‘high’ tank?
Aquatop makes some nice small hob filters. They have adjustable flow, but sadly are not self priming.
Made a mod to my aquaclear 110 by putting a bulkhead in place of the motor and plumbed my marineland c530 into it on my 125 gallon tank so I get the surface benefit of the HOB while getting the efficiency of the canister filter.
One sump on a large tank will
Use less electricity than 3 fx6’s. Sumps store tremendous amounts of biomedia. Easy to service system with less disturbance display tank
I have a 75 gallon with 3 electric blue acaras and a gold severum and had 2 tidal HOB. As my severum grew it was harder and harder to keep the tank clean. I finally decided to bite the bullet and bought a canister filter and it was the best purchase I've made for my tank.
I love that you reiterated that if what one has is working it is the best filter in the world 😊There are soooo many choices for filtration and let's face it, lots of us fishkeepers have FOMO (🤣) and want to try the latest and greatest. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If your tank life is happy and balanced, hell to the yeah!! Leave it be. And, let's face it, not everyone has the means to try every new product, no matter how much they want to. Again, if it ain't broke...
I love your content (and Carl) so much....😁
I got whale 500 on a 55 gallon tank absolutely amazing filter. I put 4l of media. and pound filters at the bottom
I have juwel aquarium that come with internal filters very good , plus if you get a new aquarium you can swop filter sponges about.
I have a 20 high and went with a sponge filter for 2 reasons
1. Ease of use
2. Shrimp and Fry
I dont mind that its a little ugly if its going to be the safest and most efficient option for me. My pump has 2 attachments so I have an airstone ready to go incase I end up needing more gas exchange
Very good advice! I know if I move up to a 125 then it's gonna cost me lol those filters aren't cheap
I have a tidal 35 (from John) on my heavily planted 10 gal betta nano community tank and it works perfect. I have it on the lower flow and it not too much at all.
I like aquatop filters
I have a tidal 35 on a 10 gallon shrimp tank lol. I had it already so i used it and adjusted the flow to a really low setting.
Damn that's a chunk of lumber! hope you feel better soon and get some ice on that toe
