    I've said it before. I'm saying it now... and I'll probably say it in the future.
    Generators are life changing.
    I bit the bullet a couple years ago and hired an electrician to change out my breaker box to be more modern. While he was at it, I had him set it up for a generator to plug into. Was it expensive? Yes, yes it was. Has it removed a mountain of anxiety from my shoulders every time the skies turn grey? YEP!!! I'd say it's the second smartest thing I've ever done in the fish room. The first being the Python - the single greatest invention in the hobby.

      I have my equipment plugged into a back up battery so stuff keeps running in case of power outs. Although the battery doesn't last long when the power goes out unfortunately. Definitely need a generator

    • @Whips_World
      @Whips_World 18 днів тому +2

      @@Sean3D2Y That's the trouble with battery backup. They don't last long. We've lost power for days at a time. Without the generator, the basement would have been flooded (because the sump pumps aren't working either) and the fish would be dead. The battery backup stuff is nice for short term events though, for sure.

    when i started up the hobby again the first thing i got was a first aid kit for my tanks. For instance my clownfish started acting they they had parasites and i had onhand exactly what they needed. I bought it when i could afford it and therefor had it when i needed it, and i am regularly getting stuff to keep onhand for "in case i need it in the future" things. ALSO youre talking about power outages and we have a lot of them for no reason lol so i keep all my setups able to be ran off just airpump filtration like sponges or undergravel filters, so the airpumps and heaters can be ran off USB battery backup generator rechargable with solar pannel

  • @cammiluna

    batteries explode. :) That's the bad thing about them.
    My fish got injured last week when his forehead got sliced by a loose suction cup. I put aquarium salt and seachem paragard in the tank that I had lying around and he healed up in five days! Pet supply stores are all in car dependent territories where I live and I can't drive, so I order meds and stuff online and make sure I'm fully stocked because I can't run across five miles of parking lot to a petco if anything happens. Only thing I don't have is a generator/battery and I keep procrastinating because my town only gets power outages for an hour at a time whenever some car crashes into a power pole. I really should stop procrastinating.
    Great video!

    I'd say it isn't cheap but for some regions, an overnight battery backup connected to a solar panel could work too, but that would really work better for areas that get a lot of sunlight.

    Great vid! Very valuable info! A tip I can give on keeping tanks warm is to get yourself a box of hand warmers called Hot Hands. Open up some packs of those and place around the sides of the tanks and cover the tanks with towels or blankets to retain that heat. Check the temperature periodically. It totally works and has kept my fish comfortable during a power outage in one of the “winter” months (I put winter in “” quotes because this is Southern California lol).

    Now that’s what I call Goldfish aquarium!!! Also the water in the big boy tank looks clearer on camera and I can tell your work is paying off John!! I got me some battery operated air pumps for emergencies. I have found that my fish can handle poorer overall water quality when I had to take a trip out of town for work and got extended a month past the couple of weeks I was supposed to be gone and when I finally got home and tested my water and seen how nasty and desperately I needed to do a water change. That tells me in a power outage situation that at worst seems to only last a couple days here where I live(obviously a worse case scenario is possible) as long as the water keeps moving and I have a few days buffer on the water quality side before my fish suffer because they are very hardy. P.S. Lisa that goldfish tank makes it very tempting for me to get another tank and risk my landlord telling me to get rid of all of my tanks lol.

      @@kasperkjrsgaard1447 yep, not sure. It’s just my female bettas. I got them from the same batch. I don’t know why they have had issues. All my other fish in the aquarium look great. Very healthy. And while I was gone, I guess the cats somehow unplugged the pump and my husband just didn’t notice it right away. My hubby has never really kept pets. I am in charge of that, in general. and yes, I really didn’t allow him to feed them while I was gone. My instructions were: 2 small pinches for the 55 and 40G and just a finger tip for my 20 and 10 gallons. someone mentioned my other fish might be healthy but the female betas might be having problems because my pH was too high and it WAS a bit high. A good video but, I think you had to cover equipment failure too as that will happen to everyone who stay in the hobby for couple years or more. This is a big one too
    For electricity: I’m not in a flat so I can park my car near by. I have a 12dc to 220ac converter (in Europe, for you it would be 110ac). I plug that in car, extension lead to the filter and I can run like that with hour car off, 30min car running … but this is for short outages… not a solution for 24hrs…

    I have the meds but I’m not sure when to use which medicine. I recently bought some fish from a pet store, I had been looking for these fish for a long time. I brought them home and they were fine for a week. Then they started dropping. I didn’t know why, but I treated them with various things to try to stop the carnage. I lost 13 fish and I’m still holding my breath. It makes me so sad to loose fish. Thank god for a quarantine tank, it could have been so much worse. My question is, what’s the first thing you do when you see your fish acting weird? And can u treat a planted tank with salt? There’s just so many things I’m not sure of. Love the video, cause I learn so much. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it’s appreciated.

      The best thing is to have a quarantine aquarium. If you buy new fish from the dealer, keep the new fish in quarantine for at least two weeks. If they have shown no illness by then it should be fine to move them to the major aquarium.
      If the fish should start acting weird the first thing I do is do a massive water change. If it doesn’t help I’ll may add some salt and raise the temperature a bit. I haven’t had any medics for ages and haven’t had the need either.
