    My dad was involved in NYC transit, high up enough that he got to meet Cuomo on more than one occasion, and he's pretty much your average Lib, of the type that was fawning over Cuomo during the pandemic and such, but he despises Cuomo, both personally and professionally after having to be in his presence for more than 10 minutes. He's basically said that if Cuomo decides to run for president (which he's been angling for basically since he first got the governorship), he will personally make it his life's mission to do everything in his power to prevent Cuomo from winning the primary.

    It happened all the time when I was working as a manager at Blockbuster. Parent asks me why a movie/game is rated R or T or M, and I say "language and violence". Then they say "well, is there any nudity or sex in it"? And I say "not really, maybe one scene", and the parent says "ok kids, you can get it!". Cos there's obviously no problem with exposing kids to gratuitous violence and explicit language but we can't even mention or show anything regarding sex to their children, and wonder why people have such strange beliefs when it comes to the human body and human sexuality.

    I saw it back in 2018. The lib darling for Iowa's governor race had a Me Too moment when several women came out with sexual assault and sexual harassment allegations against him. He ended up having to withdraw his candidacy for governor a few weeks before the caucus (we have a caucus and then a primary - the caucus results are only really relevant if no one gets more than 50% in the primary, which is in June. It's a stupid and ridiculously complicated system). When we then pressured him to either resign from his position as a state senator or to at least withdraw from running for reelection for his state senate seat, we were hit with all kinds of push back from libs - the exact same ppl that cheered on Me Too whenever it was against ppl in Hollywood or Republicans. My favorite was the refrain "Hasn't he been punished enough?"
    Me Too died the moment Dems had to face the fact that it's not just distant powerful media figures and Republicans that do this kind of sexual assault and harassment - Dems do it too. Dems couldn't handle criticizing their precious party and that's when suddenly they didn't want to bother talking about it anymore. I heard the same kinds of stuff I hear from the most conservative misogynistic rape apologists coming from the mouths of "woke" liberals - "what was she wearing" "was she drunk," "how was she behaving," "what did she expect," etc. He still has his seat in Iowa's State Senate BTW.

    I can't speak for other industries, but construction funded by my employer is expensive because:
    1. We have saved relatively little institutional knowledge over the decades and have to very literally reinvent the wheel all the time.
    2. Pay for technical staff has a pretty hard cap, so most people who stick around long enough to actually learn something seek promotions to useless managerial roles so they can afford to send their kids to college.
    3. Rather than coming up with a few good, standardized designs that we can efficiently copy-paste everywhere, we do every project mostly custom with all of the inefficiencies and unforeseen problems that entails.
    4. When we do reuse designs for efficiency, they tend to be bad designs, and we waste more money trying to make them good enough for reuse than we would have just starting from scratch.
    I realize I'm focusing on design and not construction, but basically nobody's even thinking about construction or construction costs during design because of all the other problems.
    TL;DR: We don't know what we're doing.

    • @matthewbadley5063
      @matthewbadley5063 3 роки тому

      Everything you mentioned except for point #2 is because of environmental laws giving local communities the ability to block infrastructure projects and hold them up unless construction companies cater to them by altering their designs a bunch. This causes all projects to need to be frequently redesigned. The EIRs are also expensive and take forever to do and cause more delays.
      There are some general problems, like the fact that everyone always tries to cheap out on projects but it always backfires and costs more in the end when people need to fix cut corners. A big problem with government contracts are legal requirements to go with the lowest bidder. I'm not sure how often it can be avoided, but the idea of making the government accountable to lower costs will usually fail because voters want legal blocks on how government officials can do their job (they basically want the gov on autopilot).

    • @TheRealE.B.
      @TheRealE.B. 3 роки тому +4

      @@matthewbadley5063 In other industries, maybe. In my employer's case, I assure you that all of these problems are 100% self-inflicted.
      Low-bid contracting is the worst. Environmental studies and economic studies are bollocks because the powers that be just keep tweaking the numbers until they get the answer they want. Which probably contributes to the slowness of the process. Tweaking numbers instead of changing strategy is not an efficient process.

If built, such a network would be the largest in the world, surpassing Melbourne's 250km network. $10 bln is also in the range of "new nuclear power plant" if calculated for western building costs.

    When I lived in Fort Lee, NJ (Right across the George Washington bridge) The quickest legitimate way to get into the city was to catch a bus that would go all the way down to Port Authority. Eventually though I realized that you could easily hitchhike across the GW bridge because people wanted that carpool toll discount.
    So they should just create a hitchhiking mandate to solve the port authority issue.

    • @sweetpeabee4983
      @sweetpeabee4983 3 роки тому +10

      LOL!
      Fishing imo is like a lot of outdoor-centric hobbies, like gardening or birding, in that if you get two people together who are both actually really into that shit to talk about it, the enthusiasm that oozes out of them is weirdly infectious, even if you otherwise have zero interest yourself. So the fact that the Cuomos are too self-aware to be able to have a non-awkward conversation about fishing when they are being observed is both hilarious and tbh deeply sad.

    So, as a New Yorker (well, Staten Islander), who loved the name Tappan Zee Bridge, the renaming of the modernized bridge "Daddy Please Love Me Bridge" really stung. One thing I want to bring up was Andrew's money grab of redesigning the NYS license plate, and charging drivers to fund the new plates. You might remember the vote that accompanied the roll out. In the election, the voters had a choice of five designs. Four of them featured the beloved Statue of Liberty, and one feature the aforementioned "Daddy Please Love Me Bridge." To me, it was an obvious example of trying to split the vote. Giving Statue fans four plates to pick from and leaving only one design for everyone else - the DPLMB. Despite his attempt to stack the deck in favor of the Daddy issues bridge, the voters still ended up picking a design with the Statue of Liberty. Poor Andrew.

    1:06:10 Yeah, in Switzerland the typical load per platform for large train stations is something like 10 trains per hour per platform but with well organized stations (like the new parts of Zürich main station) we can double that.
    Edit:
    For example the RBS (a terminus station so not exactly ideal) part of the rail station Bern has 4 platforms and during peak it operates at 42 trains per hour.
    So my number is probably outdated and it is more like 15 trains per hour per platform.

      With all due respect, please don't compare New York to Switzerland, it's not a fair comparison at all. The Swiss actually believes in funding efficient public infrastructure and taking pride in the infrastructure they build whereas in New York everything is slap sticked together so that it barely works. Also in my visits to Switzerland, I've yet to encounter a train that's more than a minute late, whereas in New York you have to build 15 minute delays in to the transit you're taking.

    What the hell?! I lived three thousand feet from that Renassler Polytech building when it was going up! My housemate worked there and I walked through there all the time with art supplies and fertilizer, and in one unpleasant case, a car battery.
    I wish I could say that in retrospect I now know why they were installing solidified baked ziti into the foundations or other blatant corruption stuff, but I guess all the cool and glitzy corruption stuff was already done with by the time it got to Mckownville, which is appropriate since nothing exciting survives prolonged contact with Albany. Anyway the pizza place on Route 20 at the time had the worst pizza I've ever tasted that wasn't a Lunchable, so if they did put in ziti, the building probably tastes like garbage.
