  • How To Port Your VQ35DE Intake
    Hey guys here's another video on the VQ intake from my 350z, this time we're porting the intake to remove the casting marks and pitting on the inside of the intake manifold and plenum to allow for better airflow to the head.
    From what I could find in the forums most people say that the heads on the VQ35DE is not that restrictive which is why I only ported the intakes.
    This job was very cheap as it only requires the tooling and A LOT of time and patience. However the job itself was not overly difficult and I would recommend to anyone considering doing this as its a good chance to familiarise yourself with your engine.

    I did a lot of the same work on my intake system. I really focused on making that 90 degree bend in the upper plenum as smooth as possible. I worked my way up to like 3000 grit wet sand. Great info here!

      That’s awesome I’ve heard the choke point on stock manifolds is that 90deg bend, some people have even cut it off and refabricated a bigger and smoother corner🤙🏻

      It is a bit tedious, good to use a spare one as you can take as long as you want and still keep your car on the road 👍🏻

    How was your power after the port? Plenum is definitely recommended but the lower manifold will reduce velocity if the diameter is opened up past just a polish. I definitely regret porting my manifold on my HR as I lost a good 10ft/p of torque throughout torque band except for right up top it picked up maybe 5-10ft/p so definitely less powerful overall. Just a tad more power at redline. I recommend port matching the manifold but blend to normal diameter by half way down at the latest. Then just sand the casting from there down. Loosing velocity means loosing volumetric efficiency and therefore loosing power especially under 5k rpm. opening the diameter in the lower runners does not give you more air, just less velocity.

      It’s already designed well from the factory. You wouldn’t buy a 30,000$ Trombone and port it.

    Did you port match the heads? Intake to head is the most important part of port matching. Port matching was started years ago carburetor-intake port,intake-head.

    • @ReubsModifications

      I didn’t match the heads, I found a few forums that said there isn’t much gain from doing the heads 👍🏻

    Good idea this. Any idea on power gains from it? Not expecting anything much but could be handy especially when I get to installing ITB's

    • @ReubsModifications
      @ReubsModifications  2 роки тому +4

      I got a retune afterwards and power gains were minimal, the restriction of the intake is the elbow at the throttle body. Going ITBs will get rid of that restriction so you should see far better gains than what I got 👍🏻

    Wouldn't you want the intake surface to be a bit rough to help with fuel atomization? I thought polishing was only for exhaust porting...

    • @ReubsModifications
      @ReubsModifications  2 роки тому +1

      that is one concept, the other is better airflow i think both are fair points. I did get minor performance gain after retuning however.

    • @Sam_Missile
      @Sam_Missile 2 роки тому +1

      @@ReubsModifications that's true. I believe however that since the VQ is a multi pojnt fuel injected engine, air and fuel get mixed in the intake manifold and it would benefit from some extra atomization, where as a direct injection engine would benefit more from polishing and flow since air and fuel only really meet in the combustion chamber. I guess we'd have to see a comparison to really tell witch concept works best for the VQ

    • @ReubsModifications
      @ReubsModifications  2 роки тому +1

      @@Sam_Missile yeah that’s a very good point, you would have to compare both side by side to be able to see the difference. I think it would be a very minor difference and would probably vary throughout the RPM 👍🏻

    • @Cant_C_Me
      @Cant_C_Me 9 місяців тому

      Post injection benitfits from rough surface as with direct injection benitfits from port and polish as the fuel is added after the manifold. DE benefits from less turbulence and more velocity from port and polish.

      They're rotary sanding pads. They come in a few sizes I think I was using 2 inch pads in various materials. You can get sanding discs in different grit and scotch bright pads. Try searching rotary tool sanding disk. Here's a link I found to one but it doesn't include sanding disks

      Considering the cost was very low I'd say its worth it if you have the time to do it yourself. I gained some mid range torque and gained 3kw at the wheels for peak power. The tune was required after the porting as the idle was all over the place.
