This song is timeless. Carly is an incredible songwriter and singer. I'm here for it if you're going down this rabbit hole! Her songs "You Belong to Me" "Let the River Run" "Coming Around Again" and "Nobody Does it Better" are classics.
Carly Simon is an amazing singer-songwriter. Her father, Richard, was one of the two co-founders of the famous Simon & Schuster book publishing company. She was married to fellow singer-songwriter James Taylor ("You've Got a Friend," "Shower the People (You Love With Love)" and "Fire and Rain") for 11 years from the early 1970s to early 1980s. They had two children together. Supposedly, she based part of "You're So Vain" on actor Warren Beatty, whom she dated for awhile. You might also enjoy Carly's songs "Anticipation" (whom she wrote about fellow singer-songwriter Cat Stevens, who was running late to pick her up for a date) and "Nobody Does It Better" (from the 1977 James Bond movie "The Spy Who Loved Me").
An amazing artist for sure. The ambiguous lyrics are genius, so many people get upset by them, but she is talking about multiple people, so it does make sense and just so clever. Great that you're checking out some older stuff on here, always love to hear your thoughts and this is no exception. Thanks so much. ❤
"You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you" is - for me - the smartest and most scathing lyric in a pop single of all time. Just shade doesn't come shadier. It'd be lovely to see you follow this up with reactions to "Coming Around Again," "Nobody Does It Better" and "Give Me All Night." Thank you for what you do here.
Carly Simon is great... she's got a bunch of classics. I would recommend her live version of That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be, or the duet with her then-husband James Taylor, Mockingbird. But my favorite of her songs is Right Thing to Do.
Beatty thinks this song is about him but Carly says only verse 2 is about Warren. Each verse is about a different man though. And to this day Carly will not reveal them
@Randy A By all accounts, Warren loved himself, maybe its just me, but I get the feeling Carly didn't want Warren to know how much he hurt her, Strange nobody got called out, but what the heck it's a great song
This song was great in many aspects, one of the more obvious being the denunciation of a certain "upper class male model" shared in a more hidden way but that everybody knew. Of course the lyrics also have the aspect of the hurt shown by the character of the singer which give it so much personality. But what impressed me more was how easily the lyrics shocked me (the "You're so vain. You probably think this song is about you") if i was just a little too focused on the song. Am i so much more vain than i ever though? That is one of the strengh of this song. It is so easy to impersonate any of the characters depending on the ones gender. It is always something when a song makes one think about our self and they make it in such a smooth way. I am a straight male by the way and happy to be it with all the good and bad.
She's great! Extensive discography. "The Right thing to do" and "Night Owl" are two of my favorites and of Course the song you covered "You're so Vain". You should look up "Linda Ronstadt".
While this is her most well-known song, I think her true masterpiece as a singer/songwriter is "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be". I don't think I know another song sung from a young woman's POV that's as full of anger as that song.
This song always made me smile, because the whole song is actually about him lol.

Another fabulous 70's real artist with a massive catalog of masterpieces 💯
She's great, so many excellent songs, including Right Thing to Do, Anticipation and That's the Way I Always Heard it Should Be.
Janet Jackson sampled this on Son Of A Gun... which also features Carly.

Now you're going Early 70s....Carly was a great singer-songwriter, had a really amazing voice. Supposedly this was about Warren Beatty.

Thanks for watching, as always! ❤️

Clouds in my coffee
T-Bone Wolk on bass. RIP, my old friend. 🥺🥰
Mockingbird; live with James Taylor. Yeah, I love the back up singers on this too.

She's such a talented woman, my favorite songs are this one, Mockingbird, and Right Thing to Do.
Nice choice of new artist to check out.
Excellent 👍🏻
I think the song is about her relationship with actor Warren Beatty
According to her the 2nd verse is about him but the other verses about two other men.
Beatty thinks this song is about him but Carly says only verse 2 is about Warren. Each verse is about a different man though. And to this day Carly will not reveal them

The girl knows how to pick 'em doesn't she.
You might like Fleetwood Mac (personal favourites: Go Your Own Way; Little Lies; Everywhere; Save Me; Big Love)

This must be the OG diss track. Love her voice so much. 😍
maybe from the movie "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days " with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.
She never has said who this song was about, I don't think, but Mick Jagger did sing backup vocals for it. Her autobiography is worth reading.
She did auction off the identity for charity.
His Friends Are Fond Of Robin is my favourite of hers. Such a wistful song
Hell has no fury as a woman scorned.
She's great! Extensive discography.

Let's not forget 'Why'
Umm, but the song WAS about him wasn't it?
Apparently it was about 3 different men. So...yes and no. 😊
I always say that every time I hear this song. The song is about him, it’s not him who is vain.
Supposed to be about Warren Beatty?
