In the studio original, Mick Jagger joined in for some background vocals, "Yer so vl-yenn." In an interview, she said the song was about several different men, but the incidents mentioned all actually happened.
Mick Jagger sings backing vocals on the studio recording of this song, which is what used to get played on the radio all the time back in the seventies. Klaus Voormann played bass and Jim Gordon played drums on it. Voorman designed the cover of The Beatles Revolver album and played with John Lennon after they broke up. This clip appears to be from an awards show or anniversary show or some such. There's another clip out there of Carly Simon performing this song in a concert held near a marina of some sort where she plays the piano instead. Simon kept mum on who the song was about for decades. Now she says the song is about more than one person and only the second verse is about actor Warren Beatty. You might know him from the Oscar's mix up a few years ago where they read out the wrong name for winner of best picture. Otherwise, check out the 1998 comedy Bulworth, or head directly to the 1967 classic Bonnie & Clyde.
This is from a concert on the Queen Mary ship in Long Beach , California. The other concert was on Martha's Vineyard.
……(1972) released on the album “No Secret” reached #1 in U.S. Canada,Australia, New Zealand in early (1973) 🔥❤️🌹
Such a great songwriter, performer and personality. I used to listen to Howard Stern before he went to satellite and she was one of the best guests I ever heard in his show.
I don't know how old this video is but she's 80 ! Her music was huge in the 70s !
I hadn’t ever seen this version - loved seeing her perform
Love this song.
James Taylor and Carly Simon, "you can close your eyes 👀 ", they're done heaps of duets
If you listen to the original studio version, at the very end before it fades out, she does say, 'Baby this song is about you'.
Always loved her. No one really knows for 100% sure who she’s singing about. It is rumored to be several possible men, including actors Warren Beatty and Robert Redford.
She ain’t in the Hall of Fame for nothing. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That is a travesty.
Carly was part of the Amazing Singer/Songwriter hit makers of the 70’s!
This is my favorite Carly song.
Best line “your with the Wife of a close friend”…actor and womanizer Warren Beaty.
n August 2003, Simon agreed to reveal the name of the song's subject to the highest bidder of the Martha's Vineyard Possible Dreams charity auction. With the top bid of $50,000, Dick Ebersol, president of NBC Sports and a friend of Simon, won the right to know the name of the subject of "You're So Vain". A condition of the prize was that Ebersol not reveal the names. In November 2015, Simon, promoting her about-to-be-published memoirs, said, "I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren (Beatty)" and added that "Warren thinks the whole thing is about him". Simon added to the mystery by including “Now, that doesn't mean that the other two verses aren't also about Warren,”
Peace out.
This song is supposedly about actor Warren Beatty.
Verse 2 is about Beatty, HE thinks the entire song is about him
Man, I loved this song as a little girl. I liked the passion she put into it.
There is another live version with Carly on piano at a younger age, which is they way most people sre familiar with hearing, that is fantastic.
Love Carly, many hits.....She was married to James Taylor. They sing You Can Close Your Eyes together. Great talent!
He sounds like a narcissist I had to leave. So toxic.
One of my favorites by Carly Simon is Let the River Run, 1989, from the movie, Working Girl. The song won an Academy Award. I still love it.
That was fun. Carly has kept all intrigued for decades, wondering who she was singing about.
Great songstress she also has many other good ones " Haven't got time for the pain" and "Thats the way i heard it should always should be" and others.
This song was written for Warren Beaty, in the 1990 Dock Tracy movie with Madonna.
In the song she says “Yacht”. I’ll leave that there.
Mockingbird is another great song with her
Ex-Husband, James Taylor as a duet.
Some of the song is about Warren Beatty, but Carly released this in 1972.
Carly Simon "COMING AROUND AGAIN" original video ❤️
You are killing it today!!! All are great!
😆 Studio version is what imo is a must first listen. This is good though.
Danmn Biz - Carly callin' out a Player to his face. My girl is laying down the facts. Sounds like she fell for the game; players are always playin'.
Great song, her best song I think, but I like the studio version better, mainly because I think her voice sounds better in it. In an interview, Carly said that just one verse of this song is about Warren Beatty, but he's so vain, he probably thinks the entire song is about him. For your next Carly song, I'd say go with either "Anticipation" or "Nobody Does It Better".
She is my favorite female singer-songwriter. It's hard to recommend just one sing. . At the top of my list frim het amazing portfolio of songs would be LET THE RIVER RUN. But I also love You Belong to Me, Coming Around Again, Anticipation, and the utterly depressing but beautifully written Thats the way I Always Heard it Should Be.
You'll recognize many of her songs. You've heard them used in advertisements. One was written as a James Bond movie thene, Nibody Does ut Better ( The Spy Who Loved Me) Enjoy her genius 😊
I really did like this performance. It felt like she was performing for friends. ❤️✌️
I can totally imagine Warren Beatty doing that little French dance gavotte move while watching and admiring himself! He was quite handsome!
Gavotte is a French dance, that rhymes with apricot. guh-vot☮
Not sure when this recorded, but she is 80 years old now!!!
ROCKIN IT!
It's about Warren Beatty. Warren said it's all about him. She said at least one verse is about Warren. It's _all about_ Warren Beatty.
I thought it was now widely accepted that the main subject of this song was Warren Beatty. I couldn't disagree more about the "gaslighting" accusation - that *really* isn't what's going on here. She's calling a guy out because he's a sleazeball and a serial womaniser.
It's not her best known song, but I *HEARTILY* recommend you try a song of hers called Summer's Coming Around Again. It's from her second album, before she became really famous, and not many people know it (and no one's reacted to it as far as I know), but everyone I've played it to loves it.
I see Carol King on background vocals. She has a great discography as well.
Nobody Does it Better is another fantastic song
This song was inspired by real men and it’s one of my favourites❤
I remember this song as a kid!😁🔥❤️
Live performance in New England.
Her song was written about a famous lover and she took the hook as a lot of niave young women do to guys that are less than honorable.
History!
❤
To my understanding she singing about James Taylor I guess they had a thing going Batman bizmatics you into all kinds of music
I heard that this is about Cat Stevens.
Now this is a Soap Opera.
I know when the song came out the guy in the song seemed a total egotist. And that takes a measure of vanity. Maybe the times were less vain in general than they were after the social media revolution .... anyways...personally i prefer some other live recordings of this. she's not in top form here
I use to be that dude
Have a big crush on her
you should check out the Foster Pussycat cover of this song 🤘
Carley Simon was born with a gold and platinum spoons in her mouth.
He father was a co-founder and co-owner of Simon and Shuster publishing.
She has never wanted for anything financially.
She was a good songwriter and much loved. The Simon and Shuster families are Jewish.
In her early years, she was married to the Great James Taylor.
''She was a good songwriter and much loved.''
Your only line with relevance.
Why'd you have to mention what religion they were? If they were Protestant or Catholic would you mention it then? I have a feeling you wouldn't.
Ugh! Cause all Jews are supposed to be wealthy? Is that your point?
Funny that you have to be a narcissist to even think she's writing about you 😅. Gavotte is a dance.
I don’t know why you picked a live version of her in later years
You are totally on the wrong side of the coin on this song. Gaslighting? That word did not even exist back then. This guy obviously thinks the world revolves around him and we need less of those people. Those who are really hip and cool don't flaunt it and usually don't even know it.
And she does imply that the guy is going around sleeping with everybody else's wives and girlfriends. I suppose you could call that having your shit together but, not really.
A narcissist
Gaslight is a 1944 film starring Ingrid Bergman. It was based on a stage play of the same name written in 1938. The story is about gaslighting. It lent its name to the practice. So the word did exist in that usage back in the seventies, but its use was very limited, especially compared with its widespread use today. I agree there is no gaslighting going on in the song.
These geriatric versions don’t do the songs justice.
That song wasn’t about me?
Wow, her voice got pretty raspy in her older years. Not a good showing for this gem. Should probably stick to early versions of these old folks singing these gems.
Wonder if she is a smoker- it has that effect on the voice.
Cringing....I wish reactors would stop with the random Live versions the first time they hear an artist. She was a bit older here, voice sounds a bit hoarse, not the best. Great song and artist tho!
You should always do the studio version 1st.
