    The Korchnoi Variation (B16) is a more solid continuation than the Bronstein Larsen after 5.Nxf6, because by taking with the e pawn, you are reinforcing the defenses around your king.

    The Korchnoi Variation is the simplest line in the Caro-Kann for black to learn because it only has one good move for each side for the first 15 or so moves. Of course, both sides could deviate at any point, but black should be able to understand the subtleties of the position easily.
    It occurs after the moves:
    1. e4 c6
    2. d4 d5
    3. Nd2 dxe4
    4. Nxe4 Nf6
    5. Nxf6+ exf6 - With this move black is doubling his f pawns and weakening his pawn structure. In exchange he gets quicker development than white and great attacking prospects. White gets a strong central d pawn which is not contested by the common Caro-Kann structure with pawns on e6 and c6, and is thus likely to become a passed pawn in an endgame. All in all, this is a balanced variation and a great weapon for 1…c6 players!

    Middle game plan for that variation. Exactly what I was looking for. After a few moves in the opening, I often end up with an equal position and no idea what my long term plan should be. Now I know!

    Great video for White too. I ran into some struggles as white when faced with Korchnoi variation, not knowing what my plan should be. This was helpful. Pressure h7 pawn, and plan to push d pawn.

    9...h5 is now the preferred master move in this line. GM Rambaldi recommends it, as does Stockfish 15 at a depth of 57 (eval=.24).

    U said that white has a slightly better structure at the end if peices get exchanged. But in your latest video u told that queenside majority is better.?????

    • @HangingPawns
      @HangingPawns  5 років тому +2

      Hmm. Well, neither side really has a queenside majority in the Korchnoi. Black has a pawn on e7, and white on d4, which makes them central pawns still. White has the potential to achieve a queenside majority. I wanted to say that white stands better in the endgame if the pieces get exchanged off because of black's ruined pawn structure - the doubled f pawns.
