  • Hey guys, had some people ask for a drive drain refill procedure. Make sure you use Volvo approved Gear Lube. This is on a Dp drive. If you have an SX do not pull your prop. The drain screw will be on the front of the Bullet. Pull the plug then the 9/16" plug on top and drain. Refill to dip stick mark. Please Subscribe for more How To: videos.

    You don't just over fill it then drain it down to proper level. There's a screw beneath the cover you fill to, then the level is perfect every time.

    This might be and older drive bc when i fill mine i take off that front cover and there is a screw on the side that i remove. Once i fill it i wait for the oil to come out of the hole on the side and thats how i know i have enough drive oil. At least thats what the manual says to do. Filling it up until it comes out of the top seams counterproductive.

    Nice vid! A few suggestions...always replace drain/fill plug gaskets or O-rings, this helps prevent leaks and I always coat the prop shaft splines in OMC/Bombardier triple guard grease, this will prevent the prop from seizing on the prop shaft. Once a year the props should be removed and the splines greased. Same as when you pull the drive at the end of each season, coat the driveshaft splines in triple guard. On Volvos and OMCs that is the only way to grease the drive shaft splines. My boat is moored in salt water with the drive all the way down 6 months each year and the prop will literally just slide off the splines. Triple guard is the best water proof grease I have ever tried.

    Thank You, great video. I've got to do a DP real fast and can't find any yards around that can do it within two weeks...I got this.

    If you have an electric shift DO NOT shift the drive into gear without the engine running. You can destroy the internal neutral safety switch on the shift actuator which causes the EVC system to not power up. Simply place a 2x4 between the prop and the cavitation plate to prevent the prop from turning.

    A grease gun is perfect size to get the inner prop nut off. I also blow air from dip stick hole once down to thin stream. I find this pushes out that stubborn oil you really want out. Someone else said they remove front cover and and open the filler screw next to shifter to see when fill is at proper level. I do it, less messy n wasteful.

    Doing the maintenance on my DP right meow.
    On the 2nd (inner nut) I pulled out a torn rubber ring of some sort. What was that and does it need to be replaced?
    Thanks

    Very informative video. I have DPH outdrives and wondering if same fill procedures? Prop on/off etc look the same. Well done, thank you!

      Correct. Same thing. Only difference to those is you will have a 14mm bolt plug rather than an allen key i believe.

    There's a note in the book stating to take the back cover plate off and loosen the fill screw to ensure your filling completely, is this a little to much extra effort than doing it how you did it by over filling? Also, on the oil drain screw at the bottom do you check for any shavings attached to the magnet drain plug? Thanks love the special tool, easy enough to make.

    • @Schneids15
      @Schneids15  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Paul, yeah take off that back cover. I am usually in such a rush and let that oil flow back into the pan til the dipstick is good. Proper is to pull that cover. Metal shavings shouldn’t be present like the dog clutch system. The cone clutch system will not produce “regular” shavings like other systems.

    Great Video, Thanks. If the prop nut turns the engine through the compression, Can I use a impact gun to remove the prop nut?
    Any rule against using an impact gun on the prop nuts for removal?

    • @Schneids15

      No sir. You are good to go. Just torque it on the way back in.

    • @Schneids15
      @Schneids15  5 років тому +1

      If still having issues wedge a board between the props to stop twist. I usually just grab the prop and twist and it come right off

    Thanks again Schneids15. Do you know if DPH can be filled from above? Also, the mechanic would "burp" the unit when filling. What i wrote down was "fill at 35 degrees, burp at zero, back to 35 and top off" Thank you for the help

    • @Schneids15
      @Schneids15  4 роки тому

      You could fill from the top but you run into the burp issue like you say. If you go from the bottom you can’t beat gravity it bleeds itself.

    What was the fitting you used on the lower filler hole ? Looks different then the screw in style for Mercruiser.

    • @Schneids15
      @Schneids15  3 роки тому

      Sometimes they have a flathead screw or a bolt that goes in for a plug. The fitting on my gear lube pump is brass and just has a o ring on the end. You shove it in and it won’t leak.

      80-90 high performance gear lube. Volvo makes a full synthetic i believe a straight 90. Either way a 80-90 marine is perfect.

      Volvo’s are particular. Use mercury high performance gear lube or sierra high performance or volvo yes.

      Sourced from Hamofa.com, their part number OR981 @ $1.21. Do not try to substitute with standard o-rings as the outside diameter is critical for proper sealing. Pretty sure the OEM number is 955981.
