I offer this pro tip... I had the predecessor to this unit the Moen I/O. And, after 9 years, the valve unit failed. Called Moen. Buy it for looks, buy it for life? Yeah, well, the life of the technology maybe. Moen discontinued the I/O series and, guess what, stopped supporting it. No valve or parts available. Now, if I had followed the directions and just run the control wire through the studs, I'd be screwed at this point. However, I'm a son of an engineer and I thought ahead.
I ran the control wire through conduit and left a fish rope in the conduit. Yeah that was fortunate to say the least.
So, I pulled a new wire for the U by Moen, had to re-do the plumbing, but got the thing in. Works.
Run your control wire through conduit folks!

Moen: some feedback on the installation process. You clearly intended this to be used with PEX water lines - this video shows the adapters. But somewhere between design and installation, there was a breakdown.
I just finished installing the 2 outlet valve, but I'm confident the 4 outlet has the same problem. The connectors you include in the kit require an adapter to be sweated on before the PEX can be connected. The retainer ring that holds the metal connector on is plastic. Sweating the adapter on requires high heat - hot enough to create solder flow. Plastic melts, so the ring can't be left on while soldering. The retainer ring doesn't fit over the PEX adapter after the adapter is soldered. At least none of the 3 brands my local home improvement big box store carries. End result - there's no way to install this unit with PEX lines unless you do something not covered in the installation manual. Something involving a grinder (to slim down the adapter) and a dremel (to widen the hole in the retainer ring). Something I'm sure your design people would frown over, but there's absolutely no other choice, given the items included in the box.
The solution is simple, just machine the brass connectors to end with a PEX connector. Problem solved. I'm guessing you're going to wind up with some torqued off plumbers, and higher returns than you expected.

Two solutions: If you sweat the adapter, then you can use a heat shield cloth to protect the plastic body. OR you can use ProPress to crimp copper to pex adapters on. ProPress is a "newish" way of handling copper fittings. No soldering.

Using sharkbites here is the best option for DIY'ers.... These stubouts can be removed, but the black plastic nut cannot be removed as it will not fit back over the newly sweated fitting. You can remove the o-ring if you're concerned with too much heat. I'm not a pro, but I have sweat a lot of pipe over the past 20 years... I could not get a good, clean sweat joint between the moen stubout and the pex fitting. I ultimately paid the extra cost and used sharkbites.... Pex stubouts for this system should be an option and would make install a lot easier.

Couple questions, how does the copper cap connect to the plastic piece in order to cap it off? Also the battery backup is meant for a power outage of several days? Well if you don’t have power you won’t have hot water and if on a well you won’t have water either.

Hello CP H. If you are referring to our U by Moen system, there are no caps included. It is a 1/2" brass outlet and any compatible 1/2" cap would suffice. The battery backup provides the opportunity to shower for 2-3 days, which will be dependent on your hot water environment. Should you have any questions, you may contact us directly at 1-800-BUY-MOEN (1-800-289-6636) or email at www.moen.com/customer-support/contact-us.

I feel confused about where to install the controller? What is the maximum distance between the controller and valve? We'd like the controller to be outisde of the shower, on a wall next to the shower door. What happens when the GFI trips?

    • @moenfaucets
      @moenfaucets  5 років тому

Hello Adam. If the GFCI trips the outlet will no longer have any power. This means that the shower cannot be used unless the optional battery back-up has been installed. The battery back-up kit is part number 179573.

Which in this setup, is behind a wall and can't be reset. You would need some way to access the in wall GFCI. Does your suggested design include an access panel?

Hello Adam. An access panel is required for installation and is covered in our installation instructions:
"Access panel opening minimum 14" wide by 29" high to allow access to valve shutoff's and electrical outlet for servicing."

Please Note: When pulling a data cable, power cable or the like, NEVER FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE 6:22 illustrated in this video. ALWAYS grasp the data or power cable plug by the body of the plug. The life of the cable is shortened and, in the instance of the line voltage cable, a fire may occur causing loss of life and property damage.

Good advice, although this is a low-voltage cable.

After only a little over 1 year, my customers control box started leaking internally. Please be aware this product is not made very well. Looks like I will be replacing it and definitely not recommending to any other customers.

it's made of plastic and literally covered in potentially leaky connections. But if you installed it right, it'll work good. I did it and I know literally nothing about plumbing. And it works fine. How much did you charge for install?
