Dude you are the F ing man! I have been searching all over the internet trying ot get a pic of what the motor mounts look like for these engines. You would not belive how hard it is. Thanks for taking up through this. Good informative video!!!!
Dude, I love your channel. Every time I turn on my phone it seems you have another video out. Unlike having to wait a week or two with the other guys. Keepem comin dude.
Interesting, you make it look easy, but I realize there's quite a bit of experience that goes into this swap! It gives me the confidence to do a 3.8 replacement, LOL. Yes, just taking the blown 3.8 out of my wife's (otherwise mint condition) 97 RS and putting a low mileage 3.8 back in it. I'm sure that's considerably easier! She blew out an oil line, ran without oil for about 6 miles of highway, and pulled over when she heard a "clunk" and it started running poorly... Ignoring the flashing warning lights, and the other symptoms prior to the rod snapping in half. I don't really want to put the v8 in it because, frankly, she would just get in trouble with extra ponies, and the 3.8 is available in 25 different cars and should just plug into place. (might have to swap a bunch of accessories, the oil pan and other things of course)
You shouldn't have any trouble just replacing the 3.8. Like you said, maybe swap accessories and oil pan but otherwise it's just pull out the old one and put the new one back in place.
It only looks easy because I condense hours of work into a short little video, I can't show all the head scratching, cussing, and trying to figure things out, it would be a very long and very boring video.
The v6 and v8 k-members are different, you eithe rneed to swap the k-member, or they do make adapter kits also to make your v6 k member work with a v8. Thanks a lot for the support and for watching!
yeah... nothing is cheap any more, I remember buying stuff when I was a teenager (early 2000's) for $100 or so and those same parts are $300+ now. Inflation sucks.
I like you video the best! Tons of others had music like you did. However, yours wasn't obnoxious. Yes very informative! except is it a 4.8? 5.3! 6.0! 6.2? what ever it is thanks for the information. Great job! ps looked cold in the garage. Propane heaters talk to the shop gods..
Awesome video..I have a 97 lt1 t56 car that I'm ls swapping.Im installing a 6.0 with the holley term8nator x . Question is ..how do I use my factory gauges?
No the LM4 isn't any better than an LS1, they are substantially less expensive though. I got mine from the LKQ Pull Your Part near me for $400. The transmission I bought used on facebook marketplace for about $900 if I remember correctly. The engine came complete with accessories, harness, intake, computer and everything. The transmission was just the transmission, no clutch or anything with it.
yes correct, I did have the engine mounts switched though which had the engine offset too far to the passenger side, the passenger header wouldn't fit. After I switched them it was still offset to the passenger side, but not as far. Both headers fit and the steering shaft cleared.
Dozens to choose from. Can't remember exactly which one it was www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchResultsPageCmd?q=camaro+ls+k+member&storeId=10001&catalogId=10002&langId=-1
The k-member I used is a BMR K-Member, but I ordered it from Jegs, they were the only place that had them in stock at the time. This is the exact k-member I used www.jegs.com/i/BMR-Suspension/142/KM013H/10002/-1 but there are several different versions, different engine mount styles and different steering rack mounting styles. I'm using an F-body ls1 oil pan, I ordered the pan with new pick up tube and gasket on amazon.
I got this one out of my local LKQ pull it yourself junk yard. I also part out GMT 800 trucks and GMT 360 SUV's so I have a pretty much unlimited resource of Ls engines. Try searching for 99 to 06 gm fullsize trucks and suv's that are being partedout or sold for parts.
Hey man. I’m about to do the exact same thing to a 02 firebird originally a 3.8 but I’m going to drop a 5.3 in it. Ik it’s been a couple years ago but you wouldn’t know like the part number or anything to that k member you got. I’m trying to find one for mine but not having the best of luck and did the engine mounts come with that k member or was it separately.
I don't remember the part number of the k-member, but I do remember it is a BMR Suspension part and I remember BMR had like 15 different versions depending on what you want to do. The one I used came with the engine mounts.
I want to swap a 4.8 or 5.3 into a 96 RS camaro what can you recommend I need to make it fit and would the same K member you are using work on mine, thanks in advance
based on my experience and what you're trying to do, I would try to get a 99 or 2000 4.8 or 5.3 to swap into it, it will have the fewest differences in electronics but still will not be completely compatible. Since there was no Ls option in 96 it'll probably be easiest to do some kind of stand alone engine management, either with a factory computer or something like Holley, and adapt the original gauge sending units to the new engine. It should be too difficult to get the oil pressure, coolant temp, and voltage to work, but tach may be tricky. Yes the k-member I used will work for you as well.
Yes I used the V6 rack and steering shaft. Here's the deal, the V8 rack and shaft are different from the V6 rack and shaft so if you're going to use a factory k member, you'll have to get a V8 rack and shaft as well. But they make aftermarket k-members for Ls V8 that use the V6 rack and shaft. So if you're going with an aftermarket k-member, you can keep your V6 rack and shaft, just make sure you order the right k member.
the 5th gen camaro is a much different animal, you'll need and engine and transmission, harness, and pcm from a 2010 to 2013 camaro to swap it. You'll also need hptuners or a similar software/programmer to remove all the security features and reprogram the TCM. There's probably more you'll need as well but I haven't done one so I don't know all the intricate differences. I do know that GM dramatically increased the complexity of their hardware and software in 2010 and newer vehicles which makes them much more complex to swap.
Either is a great option. My advice, try to find one you can see and hear run, that way you'll know it's a good runner and won't need to do anything to it besides upgrades if you choose. And find yourself a complete wire harness and computer from as close a year as possible. I believe the 3.4 was pre-98, so I would try to find a wire harness and computer from a 98 camaro or firebird that came with the same transmission (automatic or manual) and an LS to make the wiring as close to plug and play as possible.
Hey buddy just wondering if you Possibly have a part number for that K member from BMR? I'm trying to get me 14 my 95 Camaro that I'm putting a 6.0 LS in it And cannot seem to find the right k member so if you possibly have a part number that would be extremely helpful

If you haven't already, check through the first 3 or 4 videos in the teen dream playlist, I thought for sure I showed the box and part number in one of them.

You never re use any gaskets. I bought a full gasket rebuild kit for the 5.3 Brand name is Big 3 Gaskets bought it off ebay for 130 bucks. Well worth it when rebuilding and installing a LS or any engine at that.
I re use gaskets that are intended to be re used all the time, haven't had any issues so far. I figure if an engineer with far more education and material knowledge than me designed something to be re used, it's probably safe to re use it. I'd rather spend the $130 on an ebay turbo than gaskets that don't need to be replaced. From time to time I do come across leaking or damaged gaskets and those I do replace, but if it ain't broke, I don't fix it.

@@MohawkMotors awesome thanks man. Im sure you have all that. Also if you can get a 5.3 Ecu with vats turned off you should not have any problems keeping it running or starting it up. I bought a Ecu from Ebay for DBC, with Vats delete, rear o2 sensor delete. Speedometer delete, and no torque management. I will have to be careful not to red line my rpms.

The main differences will be the f body accessories, and the intake manifold, if you can find an f-body LS1 with the accessories and intake still on it that will bolt right in, if you can only get truck engines they will bolt right in also, you'll just need to get a shorter intake manifold to clear the hood and f-body accessories to clear the radiator.

I find tahoes, suburbans, rusted out pickups, etc on facebook marketplace all the time for under $1000.
