    Your skills are amazing, I love your work and both welding skills and wood work skills are top notch. I wish you all the success, and I hope people will see your work and filming skills, because your channel deserves to be recognized and loved by much more people. Keep up your awesome work and love for your boat and van. Thanks from Martin from Norway 🇳🇴

    Maybe not relevant, but I went fishing on a de-commisioned Brittish mine sweeper named the Admiral out of Morrow Bay.
    All alluminum boat was the loudest vessel I've ever been on. Sounded like a city bus.
    But I did catch 4 albacore in the 40lb range, so it was a win, but holy crap what a loud boat.

    • @SailHub

    Great start to a new adventure! I'll be following along for sure.
    Getting a bare hull from Switzerland to Scotland is an adventure in itself. I think you mentioned the French canals, but the Rhine is also navigable from the Swiss border at Rheinfelden all the way to Rotterdam. A 20hp outboard on an improvised bracket, plug some holes, a bit of ballast and away you go.
    Best of luck from Pete in Wanaka, New Zealand.

    UA-cam made a great suggestion at last! Nice project, I have an aluminium Koopman 35 from 1982 with wooden topsides and interior, no idea who built it though. Being in Spain the issue becomes getting materials and finding the skills to do the work I cannot do. Previously I worked for VT, Pendennis and ANT which took me to Blohm & Voss and Lurssens as a Marine Electrician / Electronics technician and having spent time working on a wide variety of small craft and super yachts I know good design and workmanship when I see it. I'm imagining your project will be a cross between Sampson Boat co. and Distant Shores, so my only advice is "Keep It Simple" as I can see you are already very quality minded.

      Sounds like quite the adventure you have been on! Koopman’s are just wonderful boats! Super lucky there chap!
      As for our plan, we don’t really do simple, it’s just not in the genes… but, we’ve struggled to enjoy a lot of sailing for to working on things so this time we’re gonna make sure we get the sailing and traveling in. The quality can wait sometimes I guess!

    lots of good boats done in aluminium , they can withstand a lot of punishment if one misses the water ever ,and land on a reef or other inconveniently dry object . my only sail on one was a bit off putting , a roughly made all out race boat ,looked very dodgy ,and actually the keel fell of a few weeks after that ,middle of a race [ they lost that race ,even though the weight reduction could theoretically have been advantageous , the mast slowed them down ,as it was creating a lot of drag ,underwater .]. You may have to bend the all electric a bit ,put a donkey in it ,to motor through the french canals and up to your build home .

      Hey Bertie, great to have you join us! Thanks!
      The tax…. Urgh… there’s a thing. It’s an open ended question, we’ve spoken to all of the relevant people who were actually brilliant. As in really brilliant. Basically we give them the price paid and pay the tax on it, unless of course they bekive I were taking them for a rid and then it’s to market value… I think that’s fair really, they have got to stop fraudulent behaviour 🤷‍♂️🤞

  • @casybond
    @casybond Місяць тому +1

    Aluminium is the best! But, LiFePO4 batteries on average have energy density of ~120 Wh/kg. That of diesel fuel is almost 12,000 Wh/kg. So to replace one jerrycan of 20 liters = ~17kg of diesel, you'd need 1,700kg fully charged batteries. For that reason I have serious doubts if going for fully electric is wise; I'd go for hybrid (like Distant Shores) if you plan to make ocean voyages.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  Місяць тому +1

      Yup, I presume you think we don’t know about energy density.
      Our journey is to document the evolution of electric. In our eyes it doesn’t work yet and we intend to get as close as we can to making it work by building an ongoing prototype test bed.
      We’re putting the reality out there for people to see so the fact is, we’ve got a something in common, your comment is exactly what we’re showing. It’s not the usual build and we’re thinking outside the box in every way possible to reach for better efficiency etc. it’s an interesting journey and to date we’ve just been planning the first year!
      Anyhow, it would be cool to hear your thoughts as we progress,
      Cheers, Chris

    Thats an insane price to ship that boat. I believe you could ship that across the US for $2-3k. Its not a very large boat hull and probably not very heavy. I guessing my Dodge Ram pickup would be able to tow this hull.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  2 місяці тому

      Your dodge would be perfect for the job. I’m told she should weigh 5T with the ballast on. The problem isn’t the distance, it’s four countries and the time taken for import export paperwork and finally putting it’s all on a ferry to our little island. Still, a frightening cost!

Really interested in your interior design but mostly happy it will be done by some skilled people. You could of made a plaster and glass mould of the other bulb ,25 - 50 mm thick would have been enough then thicken it up when you got home. this would have given it some drying time as well . i have made bulbs using this method before and it works . mixing the plaster and raw glass no resin just allow time for all the moisture to be gone . then place the mould in a sand bed for pouring . anyhow that's a great looking boat you have found , looking forward to see it being finished off. Beautifull go anywhere and fast yacht. Congratulations. Top choice.
    If you want to do the initial work to get it afloat and motorised in CH please be aware of stay limitations and customs for parts you'll need. The plan to sail your boat up to the Uk may cost more then the quote you got. You'll need a crane ond oversize transport anyway to get near the water. Friendly advise : ask several hauliers for qoutes providing as much detail as possible (wt/dims/plans/lift points)...the type of crane they think they'll need for example can make up to 500 EUR difference per lift. Giving a large time slot for the job can also help the price. Don't just ask locally. The most competitive companies for those jobs are located in the Netherlands. Good luck !

      Hi, nice to hear from you, we’re not sure yet… a few ideas but we will need to figure it out properly closer to the time. We have a few maybe’s, I guess we just see what happens closer to the time. If all else fails I could strap a rib to it and posh the thing!😂🤦‍♂️

      @normanboyes4983 to be honest I think an outboard will be fine for a while. I sailed a few boats with outboards, they are kinda cool in a simple way. We have so much to think about I think keeping it simple until we can figure something out properly is the way forward!

      Cheers David, yeah we’re pretty stoked, so.. The original owner wanted to build it in northern Switzerland. So it’s ended up there. Simple!
      I know a lot of people do this for tax reasons and then take it down the Rhine from Basel to the Med. To be honest I’m not sure why their plans were, we took over it as an unfinished project and we didn’t feel it was right to pry.

    What a lovely boat. Aluminium is such a good boat material. Look forward to seeing how she develops.
    How about the rig. Are you sticking with the standard, or something more interesting. The beauty of having a boat at this stage, significant changes are not so great an issue For me that boat would be great with a free standing mast, with some form of aero sail. Ideal for short handed.
    Will you be fitting waterproof bulkheads.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  3 місяці тому

      Hi Mark,
      A few ideas here and there. I will stick with a sloop rig though. It’s just easy for everyone. We want people to be able to come and sail with us easily. I’m also want to optimise performance by retain as much reliability as possible. We’re in talks with mast companies at present but nothing concrete yet.
      Bulkheads, for sure a front one, not sure about a fully enclosed rear one, probably though but it will need a hatch to access the steering.

    • @markthomasson5077

      @@SailHub ok. But I would consider a good old mast head rig. I like to be able to sheet out to 90 deg.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  3 місяці тому

      @markthomasson5077 yeah, I think for most cruisers I would do the same, it’s a great rig and great advice. This thing has a 27° spreader angle though, a gooseneck 4” off the mast step and no kicker in the plans. Clearly designed to generate enough apparent wind to not need that 90°.
      At the moment I’m leaning toward somewhere between a 3/4 and a 7/8 fractional. I liked our old Najad 373’s 7/8 fractional a lot.

      Criekey, that’s pretty hardcore on the door front! I don’t think we need to go that far. It’s not an Amel! Mind you, I flippin’ love a proper adventure vessel. I just don’t think this is really one of them.

    How do you transport the lead bulb? Assuming made in Scotland.
    Perhaps make a temporary concrete bulb so you have enough stability to motor.

      @markthomasson5077 for sure. A sprinter or a crafter could do the job easy enough… as for the springs… I guess that’s the beauty of hire vans!
      We got some quotes to have it taken for us but because it’s transiting 3 or 4 countries it’s too expensive. That’s multiple countries is the reason transporting the hull is out of budget too.
