Larry Chen travels to Indonesia to study the car culture and finds a unique Mitsubishi EVO 5 that has 600HP produced by a twin charged system. The first half of the intake and power is produced by a supercharger. After hitting 5500 RPM, simultaneously, the supercharger disengages with an auto clutch system and a butterfly valve releases directing air into the turbocharger to achieve that high end power band that most desire. Complicated, but very clever system!

Proud of the job Norris have done building this unique kit and we are glad it's getting the attention it deserves. We are proud to be part of a kit like this. A 76mm turbo for a 4cyl street car is a heavy turbo but combined with a supercharger is an epic setup. Great job Norris! Also congratulations to these customers at Indonesia for putting together such a unique build.
YES! First thing I thought too.. LANCIA.
I wish they had paid homage to Lancia's contributions, not just to this but so many other developments in the automotive industry.
It's a ac supercharger lol it works the same as a ac clutch but for a sc
That's friggin sick. I've always loved the unique twincharged builds found on UA-cam.
There’s a kid in the El Paso area posting on YT ripping around in a twin charged 3rd gen manual 4Runner. Block has never been opened. Neat truck.
@@Dusty_marlow We know, it’s just cool to see it on a small displacement Petrol application.
This isn't a 2 stroke lol. It's a twincharged 4 stroke.@@Dusty_marlow
@@Dusty_marlow You're right, I'm aware of that. I misread your comment.
Is it SAND PATROL? @chaseteter
Another Lancia invention that wows us 40 years later
If you search "Triflux Head" maybe it will blow your mind. Trust Me
This system is built from testing and from the ground up, Norris motorsport have pursued this for a decade or more.
This is a real functioning thing you should see the time attack footage !
The volvo usei supercharger and turbo charge in your cars
1.4 & 2.0 tfsi VAG engines from 2006. Awesome supercharged and turbocharged engines.
@@Whateverpoopiepants Lancia used this system in 1985 and 1986 in the WRC Group B Delta S4.
The builder is so humble. Great story.
Simon Norris @ Norris design is the builder this guy just assembled the kit from Norris, anyone can buy this kit
@@markcozzie yes fs simon norris is the building the kit,he already mentions he got it from norris, but the guy in the viideoo is still builders that cars for his customers tho
@jamesGnire didn't he say he needed 12 months? ay..dont tell me you don't watch the full video 💀, Man I got what you mean abt might be the different definitions of building the cars, but since the video is too short, i say there's still 50-65% contribution of his job with the kit from norris design, so c'mon Just appreciate this man with this EVO 600hp supercharged
@@markcozzieanyone can buy the kit sure but it took him 12-15 months to build the car himself. He completely tore the car down and built it up. In fact he said “it’s not plug and play”
It is unbelievable how much these Japanese engines can take! This fellow has some serious mechanical skills.
He had the engine modified. He mentioned increasing the stroke length. That's where the extra 100ml comes from. 2.1 vs the 2.0l base.
But yeah. You need a solid engine in order to do something crazy with it.
You also need solid suspension and brakes and transmission unless you want things to break.
Norris has been building some of the fastest street worthy Evos for a long time... Larry should pay a visit to the UK.
My thoughts exactly.
The SWB Evo IX would blow his mind.
There was a guy building twin charged evo's even before Norris... back in 2001.
The comment I was looking for....I was away to write the exact same thing...
I love this Indonesian series Larry, please come again!! Hope you can get more sponsors to support you to visit here again.
Not only the engine setup is unique from this Evo, the number plate is also unique. This custom number plate setup is only possible to get by asking the government to make it for you for around usd 2000 for 5 years... The owner definitely love this car 👌
It's not realy that unique... look up Simon norris and norris design he has been building twincharged evos since 2009🤷🏽♂️
this reminds me of an Evo 5 in the tuning shop i work in. it’s currently waiting for a billet engine block, and is a full time attack build. it’s twincharged and even with the old block, on JUST THE TURBO, it made over 1000HP. truly a mental build, can’t wait to see it reach completion
Hagerty is top notch. Chen & Camissa both make this the best auto channel on youtube, and I'm subscribed to almost every remotely popular one.
The 400whp brio just casually being the camera car on the evo’s runs. Siiick!!
I've been shooting so many awesome Evos recently, which brings me to the question. What happened to Mitsubishi? They were so cool 😅
Their mainstream offerings fell way behind the curve (and didn't sell) so there's no extra capital to invest in niche cars.
@@oambrosia The bonehead decision to offer 0% down, 0% interest, and $0 monthly for the 12 months basically killed Mitsu Motor in the US. While it got lot of buyers in the beginning, most cars had to repo after those buyers(who could not afford to buying a new car in the 1st place) couldn't make their payment.
@@xraymind If they made compelling products they wouldn't have to be so aggressive with incentives.
Mitsubishi and Honda tried to move away from the boyracer scene as they felt it was hurting the brand overall believe it or not
Accountants happened, dude!
Twincharged engines are fascinating. None of the drawbacks of only a supercharger or turbo, but all of the benefits. I'm in to boosted bikes, I hope someday I can run twincharge on a Suzuki Bandit 1200. Incredible build, extremely well done.
The ECU tuning must be absolutely nuts on this thing.
That's what blows my mind more than even the excellent mechanical skills it would take to make this run.
Phenomenal vehicle and hats off to Andre for his skills and humility demonstrating his build.
Im so proud of Larry Chen making his way across many channels. Inspiring as an entrepreneur...
I'm absolutely ecstatic hagerty titled the video what it is! This is a TWINCHARGED setup! So badass I'd love to find an HKS TWINCHARGED kit for my supercharged MR2 someday.
Talk to Simon Norris @ Norris design or Richard @ TTS performance if you serious
Twincharging the aw11 is easy, I've been playing with twincharged aw11 4ag since 2007. Don't need a hks kit, build it yourself.
@@feral4mr2 thoughts on twin charging the sw20 with a 2gr base??
@@nauxah anything is possible if you're prepared to do it, though there's not much space with a 2gr even in a sw engine bay. I have a few mates with 2gr sw20's.
Twincharged builds are some of the best builds ever. Love to start a build like this.
I just love the rabbit-hole that led me to finding this car, this builder and the absolute passion in this video so soon.
Thats the most gorgeous EVO I’ve ever seen
Love the build.
That pulley setup plus a supercharger with a by pass valve and Mad Max interceptor setup IRL. Seriously I wanted to do this ever since I first saw it on screen.
I remember when Koenig put twin-turbochargers and a supercharger on a Ferrari Testarossa back in the late 80s, so it's nice to see the setup in a more "normal" fast car.
You should check out the 900hp Prototype AWD Mark lV full carbon fiber body that Audi built years ago. Thing was nasty.
That motor trick is older than forty years. A similar set up was done with a original early side mounted super charger and opposing side mounted turbo on a racing flat head straight eight from late twenties, early thirties era. A European manufacturer.
IM COMPLETLY OVERWHELMED
100/10 THE SOUND THE SYSTLE THE COLOR OMG
Twin Charging with SC and TC is best of both worlds... as long as the SC is Roots or Twin Screw. Depending on boost requirements, you can add a ton of power with zero throttle lag. This car is awesome on both Street and Track.
We have set up several with and without cutoff clutch on SC. When force-feeding pressurized air from TC to SC, parasitic loss is almost zero. We have even overcharged the air from TC to SC, the SC helps balance out the exponential power curve the TC produces. SC has a linear power curve.
I run full compound with no sc clutch. Power delivery is awesome and flawless.
@@feral4mr2Thanks for comment. People started putting clutches on sc's to lessen parasitic loss at high rpm. But if pressurized air is being force fed to it, the power needed to turn sc is much less.
@@SJR_Media_Group Correct. And both sc and turbo are more efficient in full compound, iat's are not very high either. I only run 28psi with mine, w2a intercooler setup, rarely seen higher than 40 deg celsius on the track iat's.
@@feral4mr2Appreciate comments and feedback. I have seen where extreme high performance diesels are running up to 10 bar boost. That's almost 150 psi. They don't have same problems as do gasoline powered engines do.
@@feral4mr2Allow me to ramble... Another thing we are looking at are electric centrifical compressors. They don't have some of the plumbing issues tc's have.
Wish someone would come out with an electric roots / twin screw sc. Centrifugal compressors don't have the nice linear boost curve like sc's.
But with decent boost control, pressure on top of boost curve more easily handled. But who wants to waste boost out a waste gate. In fact we want to make as much boost as possible, even 10 or 20 bars.
When you deliberately over boost to 10 or even 20 bars, the heat can be removed more efficiently. That is how an AC works. Fluid is compressed then pumped through air to air heat exchanger. More btu's can be removed this way, the hotter the fluid is the better.
When the AC fluid pressure drop at expansion valve, fluid changes into gas and it gets really cold. Like using a paint can. When to spray paint, the can and fluid get cold. Or same as using your Gas BBQ. As Propane goes from high pressure in tank to low pressure, tank gets pretty cold.
If air was pumped up 10 or 20 bars then put through heat exchange (water / air/ or even AC), then allowed to drop in pressure to 5 bars, temperature drop is significant. Excess pressurized air could be stored in a compressed air tank. Heat exchangers could be internal and external. This is instantaneous power, even more than naturally aspirated or roots / twin screw sc. Imagine if this was used with sc.
When he said Norris Designs supplied the kit, I wasn't the least bit surprised (in a good way). That outfit has been doing solid Evo stuff since forever 👌
Wow this is incredible. The magnetic clutch for the supercharger is so smart
Mercedes has been doing this for some time.
The toyota 4agze has done it since the mid 80's. I prefer no clutch on the supercharger for my twincharged setup.
That change over sound 🤤
I love mine, it has been super reliable and is an absolute beast to drive. I'm running just over 700bhp. Same colour too, although mine is a 7RS. It was built in 2018.
I love that he kept a regular exhaust catback, not a big fan of a hole in thr hood or cut off or str8 pipe. Love the way it sounds!
This was so cool. I could watch videos with Larry every day. I hope he continues to make videos showing us all the cool stuff he does and sees.
The whine, whoosh, and flutter all sounds great together!
Reminds me of the HKS Twincharged Mk1 MR2 HKS did in the early 90s👍
I love the chill vibes on Larry Chen's show. And everything is just shot so beautifully.
It's a mood.
THIS is what I like on the channel, thank you🙏😇❗️
Superturbos are so awesome
That lancia's turbo-supercharger setup was so good back when the delta beat everyone
I had my turbo blow through my supercharger. Worked great with instant boost. The supercharger would suck spool the turbo and the turbo blowing into the supercharger would reduce the parasitic loss. Did about 400whp on a 1.6l mini cooper.
Wow I thought parasitic loss would be higher but you doubled the air flow of the supercharger if this was a a stock roots blower!
Full compound with turbo feeding the sc is how I've done it since 2007, power delivery is awesome and flawless.
What am I about to watch supercharged and turbo charged I'm amazed
30 seconds in i clicked on the I'm OBSESSED button. What an amazing build
Great work to all involved its not an easy thing and even with new tech its complicated. Interesting to think though i saw my first twin charged Evo about 15 years ago in NZ as we had lots of unique JDMs around and i have a bunch of the parts needed to do this just not the time or money.
Don't stop dreaming cause with 3d printing etc the sky is really the limit and people are artists we can't stop them creating
@ 2:48min FINALLY SOME ONE WHO UNDERSTANDS HOW TO BY PASS HOT AIR....compound set-ups are finally going to work with this setup....I had this in mind but he bet me too it.....congrats bro it's a next level build
this is by far the most awesome inline 4 build on this type of engine would love to personally built something like this some day beautiful job you've done hear with such a machine
The owner wanted an unique setup and hes got it 🔥
Such a beautiful, clean build. Fantastic job.
This is indonesia bro,car culture is very attached in here,Engine modification and tuning, famous bodykit like Karma, car convert, Drifting, drag, indonesian people even do the same thing like in america and japan, illegal drifting on the street,do a illegal street race, this is indonesia,i love my country🇮🇩
such a distinct sound
In indonesia, we keep the km/miles in low condition, in case we are bored with the car. Because here we love the car in low miles it means low maintenance cost, especially for collection cars

He is the man, the legend, the myth.

I normally don't like colors like this green but it really looks good on this car. And he complemented the interior nicely with the color not overkill and ricey.
Lol seriously? It’s clean, but super ricey in that color with the matching interior. And a purple valve cover too.
@@constructionbootgazer it's well done. The green stitching and everything. I'm talking about those dudes that wrap every piece of plastic in the car some hideous glossy color
@@constructionbootgazer I don't think a color itself can be ricey lmao it all depends how you use it.
@@constructionbootgazer or when someone plops a different color seat in. That's awful when someone has a black interior and a completely red seat for example. Like the fact that the seats are still black is fire.
Love the builder, he is so humble, but seems like such a fun guy.
Very cool! Im in the middle of a twincharged project now. Its a blown bbc with twin gt45s in a 79 cadillac 🤙
Cool car, there is a call to prayer too. Good !!! Thanks Larry & Hagerty
Finally a video of these set ups, been waiting one since the day I got my Tiguan twincharged 1.4TSI but to a higher scale. Amazing!!!
A driving piece of art is best compliment I can give.
Norris designs get in love the evo so much fair play colour of this is amazing
I’m most definitely doing this
Easily the best build I’ve seen in recent years.
This is a Dream!! Since i was 12 iv wanted this exact car & evo 6 mr Since 16. iv imagined it with this twin charged set up.
i can't believe it hagerty comes to indonesia, welcome to indonesia !
I came up with a different idea when I thought of how I would combine a turbocharger and supercharger. I like the butterfly valve.
No need for subtitles, - amazing work at always Larry!!!
That is one packed engine compartment. I'm sure it gets quite hot with the hood on.
Gua kira dari negara mana tadi ternyata dari Indonesia guys, wow sekelas media hagerty ke Indonesia, gila 🔥
An absolute masterpiece. Well done. 👌
This is an awesome engineering!
Doing a 2.1L build on a 4G63 is awesome. You get more N/A torque, but unlike a 2.3 stroker, you can rev it higher than the 2.3.
Not true... there are 2.37 4g64's that'll rev over 9k.
He's is truly car builder ..evidence show n his build...Good job sir and Good interview Sir 🔥🔥🔥
Norris did all the hard work this guy just assembled it
Very nice car. I own a 650BHP Evo 6 as well. It's mental. Greetings from Spain.
The supercharger clutch is the next level. Mad max had it on his motor.
the builder/driver is so humble cnsidering hes riding atop of a dragon, fair play, really cool car!
I wish someone evos in malaysia build this.. Congratz builder & Owner!! so much respect
Absolutely beautiful car and the 10 on the building behind the car is very fitting!
Thanks for the cool graphic explanation! ❤
My cousin did this with his Contour. 700hp/720lb. Same idea. It had a 11krpm
Twincharge ftw!! Love the power delivery of my my twincharged aw11 mr2.
Redonkulously fast and love the color!
Never should have stopped selling the evo, still one of the best cars ever made
Why do we need the subtitles? His English is very good and very clear.
Evo 3 and 5 have always been my favourite evos.
There are heaps of evos here in New Zealand. We even have evo only clubs here
6:37 The owner wanted a car so unique that he would never drive it. Wow!
6:05 the sound of the adan in the background was incredible ❤
No replacement for displacement?
EAT THIS
It has a Meow charger :} and i also love the entire build of the car just awesome!!
wanna see a supercharged 4b11t next❤
I'm 15, can't wait to get an Evo! 😁
i've owned 3 evos and have driven more, and i got to tell you, they are expensive, but are worth every penny. you got this bro!
One can only dream behind a screen. Still, we can enjoy what other people have this way.
thx larry, thank you for coming to indonesia
Actually there are plenty of fast built "Evo" in Indonesia that converted from Base Model Lancer as well. It's fully converted so you cant tell it from the outside unless you read the VIN Number or the papers lol. Also some of them already can reach above 500hp.
Doing this to my 2013 G37 Coupe.. Got AAM building me the 4.3 stroker. Running a SOHO Supercharger right now on stock bottom end. Soon as the AAM motor done going to slap a huge rear mount Turbo on it. 3000 stall converter. IPT built 7 speed and 4 09 gears.
Beautiful country with a beautiful Evo ridding around there . that would be amazing to experience
Respect the dedication involved..
Saya pikir awalnya ini konten mobil orang jakarta, ternyata hagerty yang upload konten ini. Ga nyangka. Goks
4G63. one of the best engine ever.
AIR CON with a big turbo and supercharger??? DREAMS ARE POSSIBLE MY FRIEND
Genius! We need more of this
Even without the engine setup, thats an extremely clean evo
Amazing job, congrats from Brazil
As fond of over complication Mitsubishi is I'm actually surprised they never did this themselves
This is deff an epic build. Love it.
