I remember one time a woman saying she was in a grocery store shopping and one of Karen's songs came over the p a system and almost immediately, everyone in the store kind of stopped shopping. The carts stopped moving and shoppers were milling in the aisles, just looking at the shelves while taking in the song! As soon as the song was over, it was back to shopping again. How many artist, with just their voice, can bring a crowd like that to a stand still, out of the blue, after all these years?

"As a record producer and Karen were walking out of a restaurant in LA, John Lennon was walking in. John stopped and just said to Karen: “I want to tell you love, I think you’ve got a fabulous voice”, and he just walked on. Karen couldn’t quite believe what had just happened. She kept asking Nicky Chinn if he thought John Lennon really meant it. He had to reassure her that of course he did. Why else would he say it?”

It's not just her voice though it's the fact you can actually understand the lyrics and the story she's telling. The arrangements and phases of her songs makes, it all makes Katy Perry and others look like children playing with a new toy...i.e... music today sucks in all genres.

I particularly like these current musicians who are not so popular but are significantly waaay better than conventional 2019 pop "artists":
      Paolo Nutini
      Corrine Bailey Rae
      Rumer

Karen was actually a drummer but was persuaded to become the vocalist much against her will. In fact it was not Anorexia that actually killed her but the punishment her internal organs suffered, including her heart, as a direct result of the medication they used in those days. The real tragedy is she was actually on the mend when she died. One of the saddest and most tragic losses to the world. Despite her preference for the drums her voice was unique and beautiful beyond words.

Hey, who the hell are you!? Ups, sorry I was just admiring comments on Karen "Angelic" Carpenter and saw you there. Dating sites are a let down so why not? "Crazy earth" I can empathize with that. I'm in psychology and among the scientific wisdom in it you learn that really it's a quite sordid society that causes disorders. Therefore, the truth is this term disorders with its stigma paradoxically is natural. What's not natural is not having so called disorders. The best anyone can do is help themselves in helping those who want help as it heals and that is wisdom.

@@mikek5958 I guess we have different memories of that. I remember that Richard tried for many years to get her help for her eating disorder. Grew up during this era as a kid, I remember all these classics, still listen to this day. This was music at its finest, raw talent, no autotune, no dancing in skimpy outfits and costumes. It’s tragic what’s happened with the pop music industry and image today. Video really did kill the radio star. So many great artists wouldn’t have been given a second look because they couldn’t be made into the right ‘look’, or weren’t also coordinated enough to dance they way society thinks needs to happen today. Forget looks, forget ‘moves’ ... what about their ARTISTRY? Can they SING? Can they emote? Can they draw you in and take you on a journey just with their voice? The rest is just window dressing.

Nice to see you guys continuing on your journey that I started 40 years ago...was a 12 year old washing my dad's car with the radio on when this song came on the airwaves..I didn't know who it was but imagined that's what an angel would sing like from heaven..made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on the high notes and sent a shiver down the spine on the low notes..takes an incredible talent to sing as flawlessly as this and playing the drums at the same time is even more remarkable...Rainy Days & Mondays hit no:2 on the US billboard hot 100, as did your previous review of We've Only Just Begun..there are also 3 number ones that you haven't reviewed yet, together with a batch of others that all made their way into the top:10..Here in the UK both of these songs featured on their album The Singles: 69-73..it was one of the best selling albums of the decade and spent over 4 months at no:1 on 4 different occasions and remained on the UK album chart for 2.5 years after it was released..the enduring appeal of their music is still very evident in the UK today and compilations of their songs on subsequent albums topped the UK charts in 1990..reached no:4 in 2004 and no:2 in 2014...quality songs like these just get bigger and bigger over time and it just goes to show that you don't need to shriek your head off to sing a song as most female vocalists do nowadays.

Karen never felt worthy. Her parents, especially her mother, idolized her brother and Karen felt left out in the cold. No one even knew she could sing for the longest time. Karen did not feel pretty, thought she was too fat and got trapped in Anorexia Nervosa. Sadly, just as she was getting better and getting over her disaster of a marriage, her heart gave out. She was just 32 years old. We lost her perfectly angelic voice and her delightful self forever. Rest in Peace dear Karen.

This is what gets me with modern singers-they don’t know how to sing a song as-is. That’s what Karen did. And the thing is, if you can’t sing the song as-is and make it sound good, then you don’t actually know how to sing that song. And that’s how it’s going for a lot of our pop stars right now. They do all these vocal gymnastics and get gimmicky. And for what? To hide the fact that they don’t actually know how to sing and they don’t know their craft nearly as well as they think they do?
I think we need to get back to basics. Real voices, real instruments, and songs with some real substance to them.

she was the ULTIMATE story teller of every sang she ever sang! a TALENT AND ART THAT MOST SINGERS NOWADAYS do not even know how to do! she was also the epitome of the singer who sang TO YOU, NOT AT YOU!....

    Such a beautiful song ,period.
Some of the best songs are about subjects that are not very nice like ‘Every breath you take ‘ is about stalking . Janice Ian’s ‘At 17 ‘ is about the alienation of youth . ‘Cats in the cradle ‘ is about an absent father . People need to listen to the lyrics and hear what the song writer has to say . It’s modern poetry.
