For anyone trying to boot into safe mode. Do the it the easier and less risky way, wait for the startup to finish, then you'll see the sign in option, in the bottom corner you'll see a power icon. Hold shift button and click restart, then you'll see a blue menu, click "startup settings". You're welcome!

The repair did find corrupted files to fix. A note to others, I got a lot of notifications that the default apps for opening certain file types was reset to default. My files that I had worked on the previous use were still there. I was able to shut down my computer and start it up again normally afterwards.

Didn't work for me tried to safemode it. It turned all the graphics very low and stuff like it usually does but it still asks me to sign in on the corrupted account.
i fixed this by enabling the admin account then swapping the folder names... but i can't create a new account with system i realize that you left your comment 2 years ago but yea that's the solution
@@bobgonzales7719 fallow these steps if you can't access safe mode make a admin account with the windows DVD get into setup wait tell you can move the mouse on the blue screen hit shift + f10 (opens cmd) now enter this net localgroup administrators /add reboot PC now you have a new account called admin in order to move your files to admin account enter regedit load the profilelist registry folder and you will have 2 files named simular to this S-1-5-21-3909149986-767486190-1199297503-1002 S-1-5-21-3909149986-767486190-1199297503-500 swap the 500 and the 1002 500 is the admin account that you made if you don't see 2 accounts like that use the cmd and make another account localgroup "John Doe" /add reboot/logoff after tell me if that works if you know what i am saying

Thank you so much. It even worked on windows 11 with the same problem. Note: there's no Refcount in win11. Don't worry. Just follow all the other steps and it works like a charm. Also, you can boot into safe mode just by pressing shift and clicking the restart icon in the logon page.
What I don't understand is this video is done 6 years ago but has a screenshot saying 100% works in 2024. What is 2024 it did not work for me so that's not 100%
It works perfectly in 2024. If it doesn't work for you, it means that your problem is more complicated and has different reasons, even though the outcome is the same. I would simply try to create a new user account and transfer all data to that account. Then, remove the old account and its folder in C:\Users
This is the second time im using this trick. Both these times my profiles dont have a ref count for me to reset to 0 i do however have a folder in the profile list that says S-1-5-18 that does have a ref count the first time i changed it to 0 because it was the only ref count i could find. It didnt turn out well. This time im not going to change it and see what happens.

Obviously this answer is too late, but I had to hold down the 4 key while it booted to be able to select safe mode. It was passing through the boot menu too quickly, and I had to try several times before succeeding by holding it.
If you only have one long chr. folder with numbers do the following. • remove the .bak at the end • Double click RefCount and type 0 and then click OK • Double click State and type 0 and then double click OK • Close registry editor and restart your computer • Log in again and see if it worked

I have the same exact problem. After changing the 'Value data' for 'State'... I don't have a 'RefCount' folder listed anywhere above the 'State' folder as you have on the video. I looked at the other lines under 'ProfileList' and found only one profile that has a 'RefCount' folder (the 1st one listed). PLEASE HELP!

Right click in an empty space. 2) Click on "NEW" 3) Click on "DWORD (32 bit) Value" 4) Type in: RefCount 5) Press ENTER 6) You should now have a RefCount entry in your list. 7) Click on "RefCount". The value data should already be set at 0 (zero). If it is not, change it to 0 (zero). 8) Exit Regedit and Restart your computer. Done. It took quite a few minutes for my laptop to load up, but apparently 'slowness' is another problem that came with the new windows update. As if locking me out of my laptop wasn't enough. Anyway, Good Luck, I hope this fix works for you too :)
Everyone who showed this method are not aware that it no longer works. I didn't this meticulously in different ways from different videos about this. Something tell you to delete the temp file. While others tell you to rename them. None of it had worked. Every time I restart my computer. And I enter my password. It says me right back into the same temp file. At this point it seems that I may have to copy my files cuz nobody has a solution. And every time when I post my issue the person who creates the video does not reply.

If this doesnt work you're gonna have to download your windows version onto a flash drive using another windows device. Once the windows version is downloaded onto a USB stick, plug into the problematic PC. When you boot up use SHIFT + Restart. Trouble shoot then in the advanced options portion, choose UEFI firmware settings. Restart using that. You should be at the BIOS screen. In the BIOS settings, restore defaults, by going into the save/exit portion. Then go back to settings and select the "boot" menu option. Choose Boot Option #1 > UEFI USB Key> F10> enter. Then set up your windows version manually.

I had only one .bak file
Could not restart in safe mode but in cmd i was able to restart with shutdown /r . Issue still remains. Please help on that.

Your PIN is no longer available due to a change to the security settings on this device. Restart your device to see if that fixes the problem.

Trouble shoot then in the advanced options portion, choose UEFI firmware settings. Restart using that. You should be at the BIOS screen. In the BIOS settings, restore defaults, by going into the save/exit portion. Then go back to settings and select the "boot" menu option. Choose Boot Option #1 > UEFI USB Key> F10> enter. Then set up your windows version manually.
It is also not opening in safe mode after pressing f4 it returns to same situation instead of getting in . Plzzz helpp 😭😭😭
