  • Rise from the Ashes is the fifth case in the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game. It’s generally considered to be at the very least “good” but for example, go on the Ace Attorney subreddit and search “Tier List”. You’ll notice that the results vary from being top-tier to mid-tier. In this video, I will answer the question: “How Good is Rise from the Ashes Really?” I had it ranked #4 in my video ranking each trilogy case, but I’ll get more in-depth here.

It seemed to me more that Edgeworth is sick of the case and just wants to be done with it so that it never bothers him again, as evidenced by the "You want a minute? I'll give you three." line. At first I thought this was the case because he found the case tedious (though this is my projection more than anything), but on second thought, I think that Edgeworth had the feeling that the evidence was forged and the guilt was eating him from the inside. He wanted to face the truth rather than hide from it.

The thing I loved the most on this case was the absence of Mia, it's the thing that I hated the most throughout the trilogy and having a giant case without a cheap solution like Mia magically appearing and saving the day felt so good and satisfactory. But yeah, going into JFA afterwards and not having a case like this or any reference of the characters from it for the rest of the trilogy felt really disappointing as a new player.

      > as a new player
I mean, as a new player myself with the Switch release, I at least knew these were GBA games first, and got a bunch of rereleases. So when we get to the end of the game, it says "BONUS CASE" and it's full of DS mechanics, it was pretty obvious this case was added after the fact and that the sequels would have none of this.

The best way I can describe this case is... eerie. The almost entirely different cast and the length, difficulty spike, and completely new methods of investigation would be enough to make it feel distinct on their own. But IMO what makes it stand out so much from the other cases is the atmosphere.
The intro is much more dynamic, mysterious and ominous than most other cases - I don't think any other one has such a powerful combination - and the pictures are also very striking and violent (more explicitly so than other cases). The characters are more mature - you talked about Phoenix, Edgeworth is still reeling from DL6 and its consequences on his world view, and most of the cast is involved in this dark, ominous secret similarly to Turnabout Sisters, but cranked up to 11. Lastly, the theme of forging evidence is deeply entwined with the mystery and violence of SL9, and has a huge impact on the characters; it's the only time it's examined in the trilogy, and the next time it's mentioned it's in AJ, where we learn it cost Phoenix his fricking badge.
Even though I don't enjoy playing through it because of this ominous vibe, I think Rise from the Ashes is a great case with a unique voice and role in the story. The only cases that rival its atmosphere (in strength and nature) are, for me, Turnabout Beginnings and Bridge to the Turnabout. Thanks for the video, great work as always!

I remember playing this case for the first time after hearing about it before, and something clicked. The reason why this case feels so long is that it's basically 3 smaller cases back-to-back
Each investigation-day section focuses on a different crime scene, a different murder taking place, and a different set of characters each. I think that rationalization made me like the pacing of the case a lot more when I separated it into pieces like that-

Rise of the Ashes is one of if not the best cases when taken as a stand-alone. It’s still top tier to me by any categorization, but the fact that it’s technically a filler case while having all the emotional weight of a concluding case for a game is just incredible to me. I also personally love how long it is. I am sometimes sad at how short some of the ace attorney cases are, and this is one of the few cases that truly feels like you get down to the wire as it takes the full three days to resolve, which is doubled down on the fact that the SL9 incident was about to be permanently closed due to the evidence transferal. Damon Gant is one of the greatest villains in the whole franchise and all the side characters are not only enjoyable but most are also deeply layered in a way that most side characters in the franchise usually aren’t. Overall I love this case and it’s clearly a top 5 case in the franchise to me.

The important thing to remember is that RFTA was never made to be "part" of the trilogy or the first game, it was written and marketed as it's own miniature game that acted as a gaiden (side-story) for the previous games. That's why it feels so disconnected from the rest of it, it's meant to be its own self-contained narrative.

Ema, Lana, Gant, Angel Starr, Jake Marshall (ok except Meekins, I hate him and I hate how he's the only character other than Ema to return to the series). I'm extremely sad that Jake Marshall and his banger theme didn't come back :( It's especially weird because with many other characters they frequently use the "joke" possibilities of their themes or characteristics as much as they can (e. g. Grossberg's hemorrhoids or Bikini's back problems), and they had a great occasion to do that with the return of Jake and his cowboy theme. But they just... didn't give him a return, which to me is just so unlike them :T

What's terrifying to me about Gant is the sheer level of power he has. A villain with institutional control will always be more frightening to me than one that is just acting alone, even if other villains can take more direct actions. That he had the power to fire so many detectives and keep Lana wrapped around his finger so long implies to me that there could be far, far more that he was able to cover up. I personally love this case, though it is, as you said, very clearly written after Trials and Tribulations.
Emma was a fun sidekick, and her being scientifically inclined made her stand out from the more spiritual abilities of Maya. And one of my favorite things is taking down Gant. He feels larger than life and absolutely untouchable for most of the case, and I, like most English speaking AA fans, first played this case immediately after finishing Turnabout Goodbyes for the first time, so I felt like an absolute *badass* taking down von Karma and Gant back to back.

  • @Valvadrix

As someone who dislikes whenever Mia helps Phoenix solve cases, I appreciate having a full case without her, even if it's inconsistent with Phoenix's competence after this case. The added minigames are also nice, but I agree that their placement in the series is awkward and makes the other two games feel like a downgrade gameplaywise. Maybe they should have placed it after Trials and Tribulations because the case is so self-contained that I don't think it would have made a difference.
I really enjoyed the writing and thriller of this case, especially Edgeworth's portrayal and having a deeper look at the setting's police force. I agree with the criticisms that it's too long, though. It takes up almost half of the first game's playtime and there's a lot of filler they could cut to make it in line with the other cases. I also don't think it was necessary for it to have 3 days.
Also, a small bit of trivia: the English script for Justice for All didn't acknowledge this case at all in the DS and Wii versions, and only said that Edgeworth's last trial before his "death" was his own trial. It wasn't until the HD remaster on 3DS that they finally adjusted the script to mention this case as well. I don't know if this error was in the other languages, but it caused a lot of speculation on whether Rise from the Ashes was canon until Ema and Meekins appeared in Apollo Justice, 2 years later.

A lot of it to me comes down to not minding the length, liking the Skye sisters as individuals, finding Gant an intimidating and worthwhile challenge in spite of his easily identifiable role in the grand scheme, and brushing aside the retcon with Edgeworth's retirement. RFTA is excellent... in Japan. In America, it's only okay.
Now I know what you're thinking, "what are you TALKING about? They're the same game!" Quite. But the context is different. In Japan, RFTA is a special-edition bonus case. It's a prequel case for people who have already beaten the trilogy to sweeten the deal on rebuying a game they already own. Thus, it's the hardest game in the series so that it offers a meaty challenge to fans, it exposes neat lore stuff that those fans might enjoy, and it also gives them a sneak peak at the new mechnics and characters (well, character) who will feature in the shiny new Ace Attorney game currently in development. In that context it's amazing. In America... it's a giant difficulty spike that comes out of nowhere, it's long, it's weirdly placed, and probably turned a lot of players off.

For my part, I really liked the trial sections of Rise from the Ashes (outside of the fucking blue bastard video), however I found the investigation portions dragged on far too long, and were often pointlessly convoluted with what evidence you needed to present to whom to carry on with the investigation (especially given there was so much bloody evidence in this case). Honestly, outside of Apollo Justice (which has a similar approach to investigations as RFTA) this case has the most irritating and pointlessly difficult investigation portions of the entire series, which is why I think it just doesn't feel like it fits in the original trilogy. Still a bloody great story though, nailing Gant at the end was almost as satisfying as the end of 3-5 for my money. If you're going to play it use a guide during the investigation segments liberally. My #1 issue with this case is its length. I LITERALLY called it a marathon right after I finished it. While the intro looks cool it's not REALLY accurate to the actual crime.
That being said I do agree that this game helps justify Edgeworth's actions between AA1 & AA2.
On a side note: still can't believe Edgeworth was never formally accused of murder. Or that Mike Meekins was accused at all after looking at that video tape.
Oh, and if Ema wasn't so likable I would have loathed defending Lana at all. It doesn't help that Phoenix doesn't even WANT to take the case until Ema BEGS him.
    Other odd points:
    1) Evidence Law MATTERS all of a sudden.
    2) Perjury is actually mentioned (I don't remember it coming up in any other case in the trilogy).
    3) Phoenix gets fired as Lana's Attorney (but it's ignored?).
    4) Gumshoe gets fired by Gant (but it's ignored?).
    5) This case almost feels TOO self contained to the point of feeling seperate from not only AA1, but the entire trilogy.
PS- I love the Blue Badger and his themesong. :)

      1) - The evidence law book given actually doesn't contradict a single presentation of evidence in the trilogy (Fun fact, it actually does prevent the presentation of the last piece of evidence in Apollo justice's last case!)
      2) It isn't, but it's definitely good that it is, and it's a trend that gradually improved in Takumi's games to the point where in Tgaa almost every single case of blatent perjury (At least, for the first time per witness) is admonished directly by the judge.
      3) - Edgeworth immediately objects to Lana's statement and basically says "That's horseshit someone is clearly manipulating you"
      4) - Gumshoe presumably is still fired during day 3, and is re-hired after Gant is proven to be the mastermind and stripped of his power.

I feel like this was one of the more f*cked up cases.
The meekins video was straight up eerie and creepy and having to look closely at bloody fingerprints made me uneasy.
Not to mention the B plot of this case is all about the corrupt and unjust ways prosecutors put people in prison.
There were people who lose their jobs, family and free will because of the old case that was completely based on fake evidence.
Also the villain is kinda messed up. Grant was really intimidating to me, just his natural sprite staring into my soul as the music fades out made me know how powerful this man was. He was a lovely man at first and I enjoyed his nicknames and funny quips a lot. But he activated my flight or fight reflex every time I felt like we made him mad or said something we shouldn’t have.
The way he killed Neil Marshell freaked me out. We were lead to believe that no matter how you look at it, Neil was killed in some way during the fight with Joe Dark, we just don’t know who killed him or how he died. But then it turns out that he WASNT killed during the fight and was just unconscious when Grant found him. So Grant PICKED UP AN ALIVE MAN AND SKEWERED HIM ON A SPEAR.
The case was just kinda more f*cked up in some places and more serious I think.

I loved this case, and especially the cast. I feel it adds more context to Edgeworth’s arc in JFA, and the Skye sisters are some of my favourite characters conceptually in the original trilogy. Gant manages to feel on par with Von Karma in terms of threat, and the final trial moments versus him is the pinnacle of AA1 imo. It certainly has problems, such as the length (the speedrun for RFTA is the same length as 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 and 1-4 combined) but the cast and brilliant twists more than make up for it for me.

Still my favourite case in the canon, for three reasons:
    - The creepy atmosphere, particularly caused by the fact that you are partly investigating an old serial killer case. Even the name "DL-6 incident" sounds creepy.
    - The overwhelming feeling from early on that you were uncovering an enormous conspiracy, and you didn't know what it was, who was friend and who was foe (or sometimes, who was both)
    - Less of the supernatural. I am actually not bothered by this aspect in the series, but in this particular case the absence of it was perfectly appropriate.

I think this may have been better situated after the trilogy. However, I honestly loved the plot, as well as how Phoenix does this mostly under his own merit with some help from Edgeworth-there are no spiritual tricks or Mia coming from the dead to save him; he and Edgeworth trap Gant by themselves. I was disappointed though at the time when Rise from the Ashes had no relevance to anything else in the trilogy- for the 2nd and 3rd game, it's as if that case didn't exist. I also thought it was weird for Phoenix's arc that he disliked all prosecutors in case 2 of Justice for All, saying to Pearl that they were "all the same" when he just defended Lana earlier that year.
I now of course understand why that's the case, as it was written after Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations, but at the time I was hoping and actually expecting one of the characters from that game to return cause of how strong they were.
(No spoilers for later games please, I've only played the trilogy).

I think my biggest problem with this case is what it did with Edgeworth's character. Turnabout Sisters sets him up so perfectly as a scumbag with the updated autopsy report, and then the rest of the game serves as a redemption arc that culminates with his return in Farewell, My Turnabout. But this one retcons his character so that he only ever presented false evidence once, and it was by complete accident, meaning apparently the updated autopsy report was completely legitimate and he never had anything to atone for in the first place.
Like your complaint about how it felt like Phoenix was written as his post-T&T self, Edgeworth felt like he was written with an understanding of where his character ended up, but with the writers having forgotten where he was at this point.

      Thank you!
      That's exactly how I feel!
I mean, think back to Turnabout Sisters
Phoenix and Maya were at some of their worse moments, both from an emotional and psychological perspective.
If Edgeworth was willing to "update" an autopsy report (first trial) just to spite the defense, and was clearly all for allowing an obviously shady individual in front of him (during the second trial) to get away with everything, who knows what other atrocities he must have committed under von Karma's guidance? 'Cause you can't tell me that Dracula wasn't all up in Miles' business during his every-day life too...
Edgeworth was an absolute dick here. (also in 3-4)
It would have bene so interesting to see his development from there. What a wasted opportunity...

I disagree with that for two reason. Firstly, RFTA only establishes that he didn't knowingly forge evidence in this one case. It doesn't mean that he didn't do it in any case before or after it. Also he definately did abuse the system to put innocents behind bars during his career up until Turnabout Samurai.
The second reason is that I feel it retroactively improves his decision to leave and his eventual rebirth in farewell. He doesn't just leave because of the trauma of Von Carma's case. He leaves because of the realization of what he had become. And that comes because of what Gant tells him near the end. "We're the same you and I. One day you'll understand"

    • @barahirmjh7596
      @barahirmjh7596 Рік тому +3

I've never interpreted the revised autopsy report as forged, though I guess I can understand why someone might. But ever since my first playthrough I've always thought it was a legit second autospy that Edgeworth kept secret as a gotcha trap. A jerk move and still kind of shady, but not a forgery.
I think the implication from Edgeworth's dialog in 1-5 is that even if he didn't know the evidence was forged, he was overly laser-focused on getting a guilty verdict above all else. So he looked the other way on a sketchy case, not asking questions about shaky evidence when he should have known better. Which is certainly not as bad as doing the forging, but he feels more responsible for it than a simple "accident." It makes sense he'd have an existential crisis over it on the heels of 1-4 and I think it fits pretty well with his character arc ((also Justice for All does reference this case in the updated script).
I actually think that "demon prosecutor" Edgeworth would push the law to its limits (including in sketchy and probably unethical ways) to get the guilty verdict but wouldn't cross the line to outright breaking it fits better with his arc and characterization as a whole through the series than someone who deliberately forges evidence. If he didn't care about justice at all he wouldn't have helped you with Dee Vasquez, and that was before he had any major personal event that would change him.

This case has always dragged on and on for me either watching or playing it. I've never hated or even disliked the investigation segments, I actually enjoyed them in a lot of contexts. Here, it felt sometimes like it was either incredibly, annoyingly clear where to go, or not clear at all what to do.
There were also some plot holes that were explained and covered in the end, but they made it hard to get through the earlier parts thinking that something wasn't thought through.
Imo, though, if you can get through it all, the last part of the final trial is absolutely worth it to get through. It was so fun, it made up for the weeks it took my friend and I to finally get around to finishing it. We were both loudly brainstorming and trying to guess what was going to happen, and I was shouting about evidence law like every other line for a good half hour. This is a case that, if I was going to play it again with another friend, I would follow a guide to skip through anything boring/mostly unimportant so we could just get to the good bits already.
Tldr: I'm not a big fan of it overall, but it is 100% worth playing through for the final trial ladder #2 alone. That and the full finale for the case are incredibly well done, and produced some of my favorite sprites/poses in the entire series.

i agree that edgeworth leaving the prosecutor's office because of this case is way better than because of turnabout goodbyes, but it sucks that the aa trilogy didn't capitalize on this in any rereleases. like jfa still goes on pretending rfta never happened in the aa trilogy releases.
the case itself was insanely long and it felt like after every day you get more and more evidence you only use one time. holding on to that screwdriver for three days was testament to that. also i think i might just be lucky or something but i first tried the badger-vase thing both on ds and on the hd trilogy, so it wasn't that bad for me. the evidence room video section still sucks though.
however, the case was also very interesting and exhilarating at points though. landing the finishing blows with edgeworth at the end were amazing, and the killer's breakdown was incredible. gant's "damage" sprite is still one of my favorites in the entire series

As a new player...I liked it a lot! My partner played the original trilogy as a kid but I hadn't, and since it was recently on sale for the Switch, they bought it for me. So when we got to this case, we were both experiencing it for the first time together since it didn't exist when they played as a kid. I really really liked the luminol and fingerprinting and was impressed they found a way to make it work on a system that wasn't the NDS.
The stakes in this got me too, I waffled for a while trying to determine whether to present the leather cloth (ultimately chose not to implicate Ema, then got chastised by Edgeworth after the circumstances changed). The fact that it is possible to get a bad ending is a thing I appreciate a lot. To be honest I struggled more with the moral dilemma here than I did in Farewell My Turnabout. Gant is a guy I love to hate because he's so sneaky and smarmy but slick about it so he's hard to catch. Cornering him was extremely satisfying.
The Blue Badger is easily the worst part of the case. Traumatized by that thing and its theme song. And yeah I'm pretty sure we tried doing the jar the "right" way, couldn't get it, tried some other ways, looked up a guide, and were like "oh come ON we literally tried that first!!". I will also add that I wish Ema had more of her own personality in this game as opposed to just being Maya 2.0. That said, if they ever release Apollo for Switch I'm sure it would be very up my alley.
I'm pretty biased but of the cases I've completed so far (all of the first two games, still playing through the third in the series), this one is very near the top for me. Both Farewell and Ashes are I think my two favorites thus far, followed by Goodbyes and Reunion. Samurai felt very long, Big Top has the fatal flaw of all the side characters being unlikable, and Sisters, while good, is very mid-tier compared to those later ones.
Still, overall, I'm having a blast and thoroughly enjoying myself! I can usually figure things out on my own fairly quickly so most of my frustration is being two steps ahead of where the game wants me to be and having to back track to figure out how it wants me to get there.

Rise from the Ashes is definitely in my top 3 cases of all time, only beaten by Bridge to the Turnabout and Farewell, My Turnabout. Yes, the investigations and cross-examinations are long, but neither of those things bothered me that much. I think a big reason why it was so good was because of Damon Gant. That man still ranks as one of my favorite villains of all time. Even better than Manfred von Karma (feel free to fight me on this one). His sarcastic, yet intimidating personality all fitted so well with him. The more I play RFTS, the more I like it. I can't speak on behalf of anyone else who feels differently about this case, tho. I can clearly see why this is such a controversial case. Some people love it, some people hate it.

If I look at it in a vacuum, RftA is my favorite case in the entire series. I think it's amazing. However, I can agree that it's out of place being pushed as the grand finale of AA1. IIRC, in Japan it was released as a side-story, rather than just a part of the first game, and I think it works better there.

To me the bads in this case pale in comparison to the goods. I liked the new forensic tools and the 3D stuff a lot (except that fucking vase). Watching the security camera footage and trying to find clues was so cool, it made me feel like a detective going frame by frame (although I agree on the music being annoying part). Also figuring shit out without a guide was SOOOO satisfying, holy shit, especially the final piece of evidence showing that Ema was innocent.
Also Gant is so intimidating, my god. One of the best villains in the series, period. The twists were fantastic too, thinking that Ema of all people killed a dude, even on accident, was so bitter. And Edgeworth and Phoenix teaming up to bring Gant down was awesome.
9/10 would play again. I just wished there was a "Story Mode" like in the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles to fast forward the slower parts.

I think the only gripe I have with it is the difficulty spike. I'm now starting the second game in the series and wow it is such a comforting breeze after Rise from the Ashes. Seriously, I had only searched for a guide once and that was for that loch monster case thing, and for Rise from the Ashes I had to keep searching what the contradictions were like 6+ times D:. But yeah, the story was really immersive and it was great!

When I first played this game way back when I considered it the best case in the first game and I still do even though I do now feel it's just slightly too long. In terms of a tier list I would give Rise From The Ashes a strong A verging on an S but still below other masterpieces like Farewell, My Turnabout and easily the best case in the entire franchise, Bridge to the Turnabout.

I have mixed opinions on this case, right now I look back on it and think ‘that was really good’ but when I was actually playing it I was confused and felt like it was dragging on forever
I was confused for a couple reasons; first being the completely new cast
second being the fact that the story was isolated from the rest of the cases in the game despite it being labelled as case 5
Third was The slightly different style (more mysterious intro, new game mechanics like fingerprinting)
And when I say confused I mean really freaking confused to the point of thinking my game was a dodgy copy or something
But anyways I searched up the case, found out some info and got up a walkthrough (cause i’m dumb and get stuck a lot)
I did like investigating edgeworth’s office though: the gifts from Wendy and the chessboard being set up as the red knights with ‘edges’ surrounding the blue spiked haired pawn made me laugh
In conclusion I think the case was good but could have been made better by being presented as a completely isolated bonus case

I somewhat enjoyed this case, but it seemed way too long to me, and i also had to use a guide several times. The game expected me to present the same vase over and over, and i was honestly a little frustrated because a case of this length was way too much for my pea brain i guess. But i still liked the story a lot and found Damon brilliant, both because of his somewhat friendly and charismatic tone in court but also because of his plan.
But i personally prefer aa2s last case because again, its not as long as RFTA. Not sure about aa3s yet, as i just recently started case 5, but i am hopeful it will be pretty good.

I feel so mixed about Rise from ashes and a lot of my problems really comes down to this: This case really should been after Trails and tribulations. Both Phoenix and Edgeworth characterizations feels like it was straight out of T&T as you said. And I really didn't like that Edgeworth turned out to not have partaken in forgery, I feel like it kind of undermines his character development of going from a corrupt lawyer to a guy who will strive to find the truth as fair as possible. It would've made more sense that Phoenix stopped taking cases for a bit just rest up and reflect after bridge to turnabout and would also very easily explain Maya and Pearl absence as they'd do the same. And of course, the length and the gimmicks that overstate their welcome is a huge factor in my problems with this case. And there is a lot of other problems I have that will be basically a huge essay. But man I can ignore those problems when it pays off with Phoenix and Miles teaming up to taking down Gant. That's one of the series biggest highlight and line of Edgey saying to Gant "Just sit there and feel the noose tighten around your neck!" is one of the most awesome lines in video games ever.

God, I fucking hated the part where I needed to cross-examine her, because her testimony was full of holes. I know she was lying, I just couldn't prove it for some reason. Definitely the most frustrating testimony in the original trilogy, if you ask me.

I absolutely love this one. It's not quite my absolute favorite but it comes close. Ema's character in this case is easily one of my favorite in the series and I love her character design and personality here. (sadly AJ did not do her justice...) and seeing her trauma and all the pain everyone had to go through only made me more motivated to find the culprit. The whole mystery involving SL-9 and how Edgeworth and Lana were being manipulated by the insanely great and evil villain Damon Gant might be one of the best stories in any case.
The length was definitely a bit much, but I didn't mind it too much. I also liked the lack of spirit channeling stuff. Don't get me wrong, I like the Feys and their story but I much prefer the realistic half of everything.
Overall, absolutely great case. I do think 2-4, 3-5, and I2-5 beat it out but that's it. Easy 10/10 case

My first exposure to the Ace Attorney franchise was this game on the DS around a decade ago. The cases prior to this one were all great, but the gameplay was getting a bit stale by the end. Then suddenly we get a new case with new gameplay elements including forensics. It surprised me and got me hooked on the rest of the Ace Attorney games. I still look back on it as one of my favourite cases in the franchise. I could imagine it being long and tedious on repeat playthroughs, though. Despite some crazy moments, the first game is by far the most grounded in reality. I love the rest of the trilogy, as well as Apollo Justice and parts of the Investigations games, but the first game will always be the one I look back most fondly upon.

As someone who only played the first game and half of the second, I think Rise From the Ashes is the best case of the entire game.
Phoenix is amazing in this case. Despite his triumph against von Karma, the guy found himself without a purpose. Maya is far away, Edgeworth is doing his own thing, so he's basically with no one there. No one he cares to help. That is until Ema showed up, and he kinda rediscovered his reason the become a defense attorney: help people who are suffering injustice.
I personaly liked the investigation system that Ema introduced. I really like examining stuff and getting new comments about what I find. I also like how smart Phoenix is in this trial. He's not a rookie anymore. He has beaten someone who was considered a god of prosecution in 2 different cases and gets him arrested in one of the worst scandals of the country, and he acts as the badass lawyer he had to be to pull all of this off. I think this was the most important episode for the character of Phoenix Wright, as he find his purpose once more and wins the trial without depending on one of Mia's channelings. He is a pro on his own and it's great to see him being treated as such.

I don't like the case either. I actually skipped it when I replayed the trilogy earlier this year. Some of the random mechanics like evidence law suddenly coming into play just felt out of place. Edgeworth suddenly becoming someone who never willingly forged evidence made his redemption in JFA feel not as earned if he wasn't actually that evil beforehand. I also don't know why he suddenly cared about the truth in 1-5. His moment of glory in 1-3 where he saves you by turning against Vasquez was difficult for him, but in 1-5 he seemed to not have much of a problem going against Gant for the sake of the truth.
      Look what he says here:
      Edgeworth:
The exposure of truth sometimes results in tragedy... However! No matter how tragic the truth may be, it would be an even greater tragedy... to avert one's eyes from it.
      Edgeworth:
Our purpose is not to accuse Ema of any crime. There is only one thing we seek: the truth. No matter how painful it may be.
How different is that from 2-4 Edgeworth who seeks the truth above all us?
I'll admit that taking down Gant is satisfying, though.

This is my first game and I just finished this case today. I was very engaged into the story that I had some sleepless nights trying to find the contradictions and even caught on a bad ending too! I thought at first Mia is going to help out more than just the first trial (Ms. Starr), but turns out we're completely on our own on the final day; it's quite the leap, I mean Phoenix could have been just stepping up because of the stakes, but you're definitely right, he leapt heaps and bounds above his rookie standing there, like he's already a veteran! I'll need to be prepared to be dumb again coming into the 2nd entry lol. It's not going to be easy to get used to it XD
