the everly brothers, simon and garfunkle, the beatles, and the beach boys were the ones where, after hearing them for the first time, i remember sitting there gobsmacked that someone could think of those musical harmonies. esp "good vibrations", it has such a haunting quality for all its peppiness
I said the same thing. Christine Mcvie's vocals are perfect in between Stevie's and Lindsay's... Plus, you can really hear the vocal vibrato with Stevie and Lindsay...
Exactly! All the Eagles' songs feature incredible vocal harmony. I heard them live about 6 months before Glenn Frye died, and they were amazing! Just as good as they were 40 years ago and as good live as they are on record! Best concert I have ever attended!
Christopher Van Buren idk maybe because it isn’t an original? But def one of their best. I’ve sung it with a group and it took us quite a while to get it lined out. It’s just amazing.
For Simon And Garfunkel, they really should've used Scarborough Fair. Not some concert version, but the original. Take a listen to it and tell me if I'm wrong.
I agree, they laid down the harmonic style for all bands to come. The beatles said they were inspirations. The Bee Gees should have been in there over some of these new harmonies.
Limiting this to 10 was the first mistake. Leaving out Chicago, Three Dog Night, Hall & Oates, Earth Wind & Fire, Isley Brothers, Doobies, Steely Dan, Hollies, Four Seasons, among others... mistakes 2-10! There’s so much good music.
The Beatles "Because" is a delightful surprise. One of the band's underrated gems. Also, did the Everly Brothers ever not make a song that isn't almost completely harmony?
Generally agreed, with everyone on the list except The Bee Gees and The Association should have made it, and the Everly Brothers should've been #1. Not only did Don and Phil Everly harmonize perfectly, but they were in sync in their harmony as they changed to a new note. BTW: And they did it with one microphone and none of today's technologically superior sound equipment.
I think the Righteous Brothers were excellent in numerous songs such as Rock and Roll Heaven. But, that's just me. There were so many harmonious songs you could probably have made a top 100 vocal harmonies.
The Platters and Drifters should have been on this list. The Platters' "Only You" is hard to beat in vocal harmonies, as is the Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk", written by Carol King.
Excellent list. However, The Righteous Brothers perfect pairing of Bill Medley's baritone with Bobby Hatfield's Tenor on "Lovin' Feeling" belongs on it. Thank you.
My sentiments exactly and I just finished posting that very thing; leaving out 2 wonderful talents like The Righteous Bros. was excruciating to watch. "Soul & Inspiration" is another great one from Bobby & Bill.
Moody Blues, Jackson 5, the Shangri-Las, Bee Gees, the Supremes, Sony & Cher, Temptations, Chad & Jeremy, Peter & Gordon. This list is impossible, there have been so many great harmonizing groups
Just listened to the whole 50th anniversary Abbey Road album. The entire thing is tight - it's just very very very good. And from my POV, very very very enjoyable.
*Let's ask Paul Simon what he thinks of Art's voice..."He has a perfect counterpart to my natural key"*( *He also says for some years now "When I was 12...I created a 'Frankenstein's Monster' of my own when I gave life to Art's voice"* ) *"We been arguing since "Tom & Jerry"...sometimes more and sometimes less...and we had a helluva' lot of good times too in the '60's like everyone else did...but I'm a 'supreme egotist' and so is Art...the difference is he doesn't know it and I do... and when I look back now, I was happier 'busking' street-corners in London by myself before "Bridge..." became a 'Hit'*
*That'll NEVER happen!* ( *Simon's health is so poor he could 'clock-out' any day...and I don't think he'll mind because music's been his whole life and he can barely sing now...and 'AG' doesn't seem to give a fuck about much of anything anymore either...that shmuck was a first-class ASS-HOLE to Laurie Birdand let her die without so much as "I'm sorry" to her* ) ( *she was "The Girl" in the movie "Two Lane Blacktop" and would've been a 'Star' w/o 'AG' in her life ,pissing-on her looks and talent...he just couldn't stand the idea she wanted an identity of her own, like Sinatra with Mia Farrow* )
The best harmony performed by a rock band has to be the Bee Gees. When they sang together, they sounded as one. Their harmonies are legend in the music industry.
Gazzer - They were labelled Disco by the media, because of Saturday Night Fever. The had already written that music for their next album, when they were asked to donate music for the movie.Their music is more RnB.
Carole Pearson and listen to 60s beegees. Perfect harmony, and its “rock” ill give you an example, listen to harry braff or to love somebody (not really rock but non-disco beautiful harmonies) and the best one imo from the 60s is let there be love.
The Hollies were a good band, but lost more than stature when they lost their high harmony, Graham Nash. His following band has made some of the world's best harmony and music.
The beach Boys have harmony fantastic harmonies. I know just 3 BB's songs without vocal harmonies : girl don't tell me, Caroline no and busy doin' nothin'
I was seriously about to write a scathing comment during the Honorable Mentions portion right before coming to #1 because you hadn't mentioned The Beach Boys. So glad you got this one right. No band harmonized like The Beach Boys. RIP Dennis and Carl.
The beegees has some of the best harmonies ever they belong here on this list as much as the mama's and the papa's and the Beatles people think of the beegees as a disco group and forget about all of their great 60s early 70s songs. No respect for this amazing group
I was in middle school when All I Have To Do Is Dream came out, that is THE song that taught me harmonies! They were ground-breaking back in those days, they should be number ONE here for their influence on pop music in general!
+iSynthh I don't know. My 10-year-old daughter and I can do the "Nowhere Man" harmony (we actually performed it), but we haven't been brave enough to tackle "Because". Also, "Because" is nuthin' BUT harmony, whereas "Nowhere Man" has a lot of solo. (I know that's not a requirement...just my feeling on it).
Karen Fahel but perfected down to the beatles' standard? To each their own I guess, I love both of them too Alex...they had countless great harmonic songs
yo, electric light orchestra is pure genius. I'm surprised the millennials haven't "discovered" how cool they are yet. this was my favorite band as a child :)
Millennial here, most of us have heard ELO and will enjoy their music on occasion, I don't know any millennial or even gen-z kid who doesn't know mr blue sky and so many of their songs like roll over Beethoven and strange magic are in so many movies people would instantly know them. I personally have time of our life and don't bring me down on my most listened to playlist
@Spork Spatula this is true but the Beegees were singing disco in the 70's and was in the rock and roll genre way before that time. Abba's music although in the disco era was folk influenced.
That entire Crosby, Stills, Nash debut album has the best vocal harmonies on it. I bought that album and turned all the lights off lit a blunt and let it play and it changed my life. Favorite album all time.
Mojo you are marvelously spot on. In my bands over the last 30 years we often focused on songs like these and have done 7 or your 10! New Kid In Town won a special Grammy award that year for best vocal arrangement, an award no longer given. (b.t.w. Glenn Frey's last name is pronounced "Fry" not "Fray"). A few you left out are: Uncle John's Band by Grateful Dead; Carry On by C,S,N,Y; Africa by Toto; and so many more by the Beach Boys (God Only Knows; Warmth Of The Sun; Wouldn't It Be Nice) and Beatles ( Paperback Writer; In My Life; This Boy).
The Everly Brothers are number one, hands down. They performed for real, no studio help. Way too much studio adjusting on most of the others to really count as "harmony".
As a side note, I heard a 1958 version of the Everly Brothers "Problems Problems", performed by the Collins Kids (Lorrie 16 & Larry 14) that I think is actually BETTER than the Everly Brothers! Search out the "Collins Kids" on YT; they are worth the effort!
On the studio versions, yes, they used the technology of their times. But most of these groups proved they could also perform those harmonies live, beautifully.
Rag doll definitely has harmonies, Sherry has a lot of good harmonies. The Everly brothers are not any more rock and other songs listed like Simon and Garfunkel sound of silence Is borderline folk.
Everyone has mentioned some great examples of harmonies and I think it is the key to making a hit. For my 2 cents worth I would mention Seal & Crofts Windflowers, and the Beatles' If I Fell. Both are beautiful to sing and everyone can find a part that suits their range.
Absolutely agree! Oddly enough, everyone thought about McCartney as the balladeer, but the best harmony songs were Lennon... This Boy, Because, Yes It Is.
"Knights in White Satin... never reaching the end..." "Are you Reelin' in the years Stowin' away the time Are you gatherin' up the tears Have you had enough of mine?" PLUS what many guitarists consider the best solo ever.
@@scottishlisa3463 only difference between the Ramones and the Knack were lyrics and guitar tuning. Stones had pop songs. Angie. Led Zep was in its own world, I concede that.
@@DontKnowNoSnakes Hard to argue with you on Sloop John B. But everything on Pet Sounds is magical. But if I had to pick the most popular song of the Beach Boys which are almost all harmonies, Good Vibrations is the right pick.
These lists always toss cookies! I have no respect for such a list that does not include Bobby Hatfield & Bill Medley who as the Righteous Brothers refined harmonies with the Wall of Sound in the mid 60s and have not been rivaled since. This is subjective of course, but to not have them on a top ten list of harmonies is silly. Their harmonies continue to amaze generation after generation for more than most of this list of talented vocalists. Oh well, typical for Mojo, they do this to create controversy to engender comments, sharing and 👍🏻 and 👎🏻 to push their numbers for advertising purposes.
The everly brothers cathy's clown was one of this black 60's chick favorite songs forever. Great harmonies and the song was everything rock and roll, gospel, country, gospel, rhythm and blues and soul. Its Its timeless and I love their vocals and harmonies.
Once a song is recorded with multiple tracks or over dubbed, it should be put in a different category. Comparing Bohemian Rhapsody's harmonies with the simple sound of the Everly Brothers isn't a good comparison. At the time, "Good Vibrations" had the record [no pun intended] for multiple tracks at 72.
Tracie McMillan Very Valid statement. Any Beach Boys, Beatles, Everly's, Peter Paul and Mary .... the list goes on. Harmonies of the 50s 60s and 70s evolved as technology advanced. Nowadays I don't even know what one would call the absence of true harmonies... "Shyte" perhaps!
I dunno though... if it's about the complexity of the sound, who cares how it's made? Harmonization is just one aspect of a tune- there's rhythm, dynamics, 'ambience' and more, besides.... Musical labelling is a pretty weak concept anyway, 'coz there's always going to be one aspect that folks will argue about (like how the harmonies are constructed) that will tip a tune across a category border. It's very subjective, I reckon...
If I was going to pull a song from The Eagles catalog and use it for it’s harmonies it would be Seven Bridges Road. If you do a harmonies list the Beach Boys have to be number one.
Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell had harmonies that were hauntingly beautiful. My favorite vocal duo.

the everly brothers, simon and garfunkle, the beatles, and the beach boys were the ones where, after hearing them for the first time, i remember sitting there gobsmacked that someone could think of those musical harmonies. esp "good vibrations", it has such a haunting quality for all its peppiness
Fleetwood Mac. .The Chain has the best harmony. Better than Go your own way.
I said the same thing. Christine Mcvie's vocals are perfect in between Stevie's and Lindsay's... Plus, you can really hear the vocal vibrato with Stevie and Lindsay...
I would've easily went with The Chain over any other Fleetwood Mac song. I think I would've went with Down in a Hole for Chains too.
You got the wrong Eagles song for harmonies -- should have been SEVEN BRIDGES ROAD.
I thought the same thing. How did they miss that?
Agreed
Same
For Simon And Garfunkel, they really should've used Scarborough Fair. Not some concert version, but the original. Take a listen to it and tell me if I'm wrong.
Oh, you're MORE th*n RIGHT! I've he*rd this M*NY times!
Agree 100%!
I just listened to that song. I do not know what was going on in the studio when they recorded this song. But. All I felt was Love! Amazing!!
The SONG they pl*yed w*s "Sounds of Silencce"
Scarborough Fair/Candice is amazing.
How about 3 brothers on one microphone? Barry, Maurice & Robin: “Too Much Heaven”. Big oversight.
Ahh Yuppp!
Yeah
Amen!! Can’t believe The Bee Gees didn’t make this list!!
Bee Gees were up there with Beach Boys harmony! Loves both ♥️♥️♥️
You can't have a list with out the Gibb brothers.
The Everely brothers were so perfect in harmony
Sandy Ellis Ellis So were the Everly Brothers as well
I agree, they laid down the harmonic style for all bands to come. The beatles said they were inspirations. The Bee Gees should have been in there over some of these new harmonies.
Im related to the everely brothers
I wish I could’ve liked this comment more than once!
I loved the song, you lost that loving feeling.
Not credible that something by The Bee Gees was left out. Come on, man.
The Bee Gees were everything but rock..
The Bee Gees were masters of harmonies before, during, and after the foray into disco. Maybe there were too many to choose from.
Carlo Dallapiccola I could not agree more.
Indeed! If Simon and Garfunkel were here, then the Bee Gees ought to have been.
The Bee Gees should absolutely be included
Limiting this to 10 was the first mistake. Leaving out Chicago, Three Dog Night, Hall & Oates, Earth Wind & Fire, Isley Brothers, Doobies, Steely Dan, Hollies, Four Seasons, among others... mistakes 2-10! There’s so much good music.
I would like to suggest The Beatles "Paperback Writer" .
Way ahead of their time.
Paul Bekanan Great Guitar riff
I agree.
Hell yeah
Nowhere man, this boy, think for yourself.. most of their songs really
The harmony vocals in it are spine chilling
I think you missed one of the best vocal harmonies ever in TURN TURN TURN by the Byrds.
Right on --and not just Turn ! Turn ! Turn !
Yup. The Byrds are one of he best harmony groups ever.
My fave is If You're Gone with the gorgeous background shimmer.
Of course, Crosby's harmony singing with the Byrds was second to none!
God yes. Add Mr Tamborine man as well..
Bob bsing yes!, what an oversight! They were near perfect!
The Beatles "Because" is a delightful surprise. One of the band's underrated gems. Also, did the Everly Brothers ever not make a song that isn't almost completely harmony?
In "Because" it was exclusively harmonies. 9 I believe. They triple tracked themselves. The Everlys were awesome, but they were playing guitars.
Double negative... When did they ever not make a song that isn't completely harmony? Oh, you fool.
Yes, they did a few. 'Yves' is just Phil until Don wails at the end. Nice song, too.
Definitely missed the BeeGees.
Absolutely
Agreed, except Carole wrote 'Up On the Roof'. 'Under the Boardwalk' was written by Kenny Young and Arthur Resnick.
... along with the Mills Brothers ua-cam.com/video/sztbEQFRzFI/v-deo.html
Cool fact: The Everly Brothers were one of The Beatles' main inspirations
And Simon & Garfunkel's come to that.
The Mighty Keith Richard talks about The Everly Brothers and state they were a Big influence on him ¡😎¡
So was Chuck Berry at a higher rate. John Lennon acknowledged it.
and for Simon & Garfunkel also.
Always, Ask the other contestants. Who wrote this? And we can never forget Peter, Paul and Mary
Excellent list. However, The Righteous Brothers perfect pairing of Bill Medley's baritone with Bobby Hatfield's Tenor on "Lovin' Feeling" belongs on it. Thank you.
RIP Goose
My sentiments exactly and I just finished posting that very thing; leaving out 2 wonderful talents like The Righteous Bros. was excruciating to watch. "Soul & Inspiration" is another great one from Bobby & Bill.
Karen Kristine was going to point out same thing
Totally agree with all of these people. How on earth could you leave out The Righteous Brothers? Any one of their songs belong here.
Yes, it certainly does belong at the top of the list, my opinion.
Moody Blues, Jackson 5, the Shangri-Las, Bee Gees, the Supremes, Sony & Cher, Temptations, Chad & Jeremy, Peter & Gordon. This list is impossible, there have been so many great harmonizing groups
“Because” should have been higher, the harmony on that song is so tight
Just listened to the whole 50th anniversary Abbey Road album. The entire thing is tight - it's just very very very good. And from my POV, very very very enjoyable.
Alex Huey amen to that
100%
I would put it #2
It's an excellent song.
Yep... Anywhere in top three
This Boy is another good one
Art Garfunkel can hormonise with a blender. He is a legend
LOL!!!!
@@gerrynightingale9045 they both need to get over themselves before they die.
Paul Simon's voice is lovely but Art sings like an angel.
I’m surprised The Bee Gees weren’t on this list
The best harmony performed by a rock band has to be the Bee Gees. When they sang together, they sounded as one. Their harmonies are legend in the music industry.
They were not rock
Disco my guy
I agree. Their voices were a perfect blend.

@@yuritarded4774 I was just about to type the same. And he says it twice!
:songs from the Bee Gees.
Bee Gees deserved to be in that top 10. Too much Heaven is flawless harmony 🌈
Seals and Crofts?
I don't think they are a rock band, they are disco
Gazzer - They were labelled Disco by the media, because of Saturday Night Fever. The had already written that music for their next album, when they were asked to donate music for the movie.Their music is more RnB.
Carole Pearson and listen to 60s beegees. Perfect harmony, and its “rock” ill give you an example, listen to harry braff or to love somebody (not really rock but non-disco beautiful harmonies) and the best one imo from the 60s is let there be love.
Espy Slays - I agree, I’ve listened to almost all of their songs
Where are the bee gees? Talking about harmonizing!
The air that I Breathe with Hollies is for me one of the best harmony!
The Hollies were a good band, but lost more than stature when they lost their high harmony, Graham Nash. His following band has made some of the world's best harmony and music.
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and California Dreaming. Yup
I think the harmonies in Somebody to Love are better than Bohemian Rhapsody
Thank you
I think so too
Mater Destroyo me too!!!
What about Killer Queen?
Words from a wise man
The Everly Brothers probably inspired most of the harmonizers on this list. They are the gold standard.
"In My Room" by the Beach Boys was one of my favs for harmony.
Awesome recording!
I only agree with the list because The Beach Boys are at the top.
The beach Boys have harmony fantastic harmonies. I know just 3 BB's songs without vocal harmonies : girl don't tell me, Caroline no and busy doin' nothin'
For the Eagles, i submit Seven Bridges Road.
This list needs a part 2,
At least.
Lots of good suggestions, but I’m thinking of
“The Association “:
Never My Love , (or)
Cherish.
Jeff King never my love- yes
Doobie Brothers - Black Water - A mix of voices in several different ways that is hard to get out of your head.
The doobies are great
Black water is not just a harmony, it's the best rock "round" ever made.
Certainly miles ahead of #9 Alice in Chains - No excuses - simply not on the same level of sophistication
I was seriously about to write a scathing comment during the Honorable Mentions portion right before coming to #1 because you hadn't mentioned The Beach Boys. So glad you got this one right. No band harmonized like The Beach Boys. RIP Dennis and Carl.
And no Auto-tuning in sight! These people had talent, unlike most of today's "music".
Number 1 in my estimation, without a doubt in my narrow mind, is the Righteous Brothers , "You Lost That Loving Feeling"
I guess Because was a good choice for The Beatles, but i really like Nowhere Man as well....the harmonies on it are beyond amazing
They're both great!
Karen Fahel but perfected down to the beatles' standard? To each their own I guess, I love both of them too Alex...they had countless great harmonic songs
+iSynthh My favourite Beatles song! The Beatles like the Beach boys & Crosby Stills & Nash had a lot of songs that could have been here
+iSynthh If I Fell has some awesome harmonies too
The Brothers Gibb - huge oversight
Especially in the 60's
You should hear Hanson doing an a Capella version of the Bee Gees. (Plus Hanson does it without microphones!) Awesome!!!
Maybe not so 'Rock' (?)
Betsy Barnicle - Billy Joel said it best, It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me.
You're right. Falsetto harmony, not easy to do.
yo, electric light orchestra is pure genius.
How about Van Halen also
How about the BeeGees “Too much heaven” or “How deep is your love” and ABBA “Dancing queen” or “Fernando” ?
@Spork Spatula so why is Everly brothers included in this top 10?
@Spork Spatula this is true but the Beegees were singing disco in the 70's and was in the rock and roll genre way before that time. Abba's music although in the disco era was folk influenced.
@Spork Spatula hahahahahaha I can agree with you there!!!
@Spork Spatula Did you watch the whole vid Spork???? If so you think all the featured songs are Rock???
@Spork Spatula But The Everley Brothers + Mammas and Pappas are?
Helplessly Hoping by Crosby Stills and Nash may be the most perfectly harmonized song ever
Good point. That is an awesome song. 😎
That entire Crosby, Stills, Nash debut album has the best vocal harmonies on it. I bought that album and turned all the lights off lit a blunt and let it play and it changed my life. Favorite album all time.
The 5th Dimension - Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In.
Should be in there !
Yes indeed. Paper Cup, and Nyro's Save the Country.
Not really rock, but I love the 5th Dimension. If you are going to include Soul and R&B, bring in the Temptations and Four Tops
Bradley Davison Rightly said !
Naw, I don;t think so. . a CLASSIC (from Broadway, of course) but not really a top ten song
Carpet Man.

California Dreamin' is definitely one of the best ever.
True, the best is Brother Alice in Chains tho
AIC was my first thought when I read the title but I didn't think they'd be on here. I'm impressed.
Me either last time I saw something like this they got honorable mention.
Ive always thought that Layne & Jerry's harmonizing was the best. I never get enough AIC.
Yes if you have to make it happen in the studio it's not the same thing, as what the Everly Brothers and the Bee Gees were able to do
I guess the four seasons never harmonized!
not really
Also definitely more known as a pop band than a rock band
@@SweetSirenia what?
Rag doll definitely has harmonies, Sherry has a lot of good harmonies. The Everly brothers are not any more rock and other songs listed like Simon and Garfunkel sound of silence Is borderline folk.

Everyone has mentioned some great examples of harmonies and I think it is the key to making a hit. For my 2 cents worth I would mention Seal & Crofts Windflowers, and the Beatles' If I Fell. Both are beautiful to sing and everyone can find a part that suits their range.
I agree on "If I Fell." The harmonies are so clear and open and beautiful.
The Beatles' "This Boy" also has one of the best harmonies I've ever heard.

@@DontKnowNoSnakes Hard to argue with you on Sloop John B. But everything on Pet Sounds is magical. But if I had to pick the most popular song of the Beach Boys which are almost all harmonies, Good Vibrations is the right pick.
"In My Room" is another good forgotten gem.
Brian Wilson was a master.
Totally agree with Good Vibrations. Hearing it the first time was like a religious experience. Also like the Byrds double lead and moving harmony.
What about The Righteous Brothers? They were one of the greatest duos ever, and I'd love to have seen them on here.
Who
They were outstandingly soulful,

The everly brothers cathy's clown was one of this black 60's chick favorite songs forever. Great harmonies and the song was everything rock and roll, gospel, country, gospel, rhythm and blues and soul. Its Its timeless and I love their vocals and harmonies.
Once a song is recorded with multiple tracks or over dubbed, it should be put in a different category. Comparing Bohemian Rhapsody's harmonies with the simple sound of the Everly Brothers isn't a good comparison. At the time, "Good Vibrations" had the record [no pun intended] for multiple tracks at 72.
Tracy McMillan Good point!
Tracie McMillan
Very Valid statement.
Definately. That is the definative Eagle harmony.
