For some drummers, electronic drum sets are simply BETTER THAN acoustic drum sets. But why? It all has to do with the situation you are in. But, once you decide that an electronic drum set is better for you and your situation...what's with the massive price differences? What do you get for an extra $1,000? Is it worth it?
In this video, I teamed up with Sweetwater Music to look at the TD-17 and the TD-27 electronic drum sets.

Modules and kits keep evolving very nicely but the real magic of e-drumming is unlocked through a quality VST. I've used a few but have settled on Superior Drummer 3. It's incredibly well done, really easy to expand into different sounds and very intuitive to use. The difference between professionally recorded, infinitely customisable real samples in a variety of environments vs module sounds is chalk and cheese. I went with a TD17 vs TD27 and put less than the difference in software and very glad I did.
If you have an e-kit but don't use VSTs it might well transform how you use it. For a few hundred dollars you get access to a myriad of different drums
I'm a novice drummer and I recently got a TD-17 myself, and despite those noticeable differences you mentioned it is a great kit. I absolutely love the quietness and flexibility of an e-kit being able to have tons of different sounds and plug headphones into it, not to mention the MIDI, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity using things like Melodics for practicing. I would actually eventually like to upgrade to a TD-27 and this video has cemented that for me. The differences there are very nice, and I think I'll appreciate them as I get more experienced. E-kit has worked for me for about 18 years, it has been upgraded several times and the ability to play quietly has been the biggest point. Thanks for this video…
Both type of kits have their place. I use both equally for live, recording and practice. I started on acoustic kits but have been using electronic kits since the late 90s starting with the Roland TD10.
The one downside for drummers who start on an e kit is the setup. They can be very compact and easy to get sound out of and switching to an acoustic can be exhausting.
When I had the smaller Roland pads I always set the center of the toms the same distance from the center of the snare as it is on my acoustic kit. The reach was the same and the height was the same and same goes for the cymbals except I use the edge nearest me. If that makes sense.
My current electronic kit is an acoustic conversion with a 2Box drumit 3 module. It's a mirror image of my acoustic kit. I've been using it more for recording lately through Superior drummer and EZ drummer. I've used it live for smaller clubs too. Its set up to send 4 signals to FOH sound. Kick, snare, toms and cymbals. They seem to really appreciate that.
I use the td17kv at work to teach on and am saving up for the td27kv ii for myself. I bought the Drum-tec download pack for the td17 and have to say it sounds amazing. I played the td27 a couple of times in cologne at musicstore. The digital pads and cymbals are awesome. Don’t get me wrong… I love my Gretsch and Meinl cymbals, but to teach and practice on, both are great options. Thanks for the great videos and have a great Christmas 🎄
As a new self taught drummer I believe that my Roland VAD e-kit had allowed me to progress much faster than a standard kit would have. Not only do I have more opportunities to play it, but I didnt have to invest precious time in learning how to tune it. It also allows me to keep things fun by finding drumless tracks (most with drum charts) on UA-cam, playing them on my iPad and connecting it to the drum module by Bluetooth. I know the VAD are expensive, but they make me WANT to play unlike the look of traditional e-drums. The feel is hopefully close enough that I can add a traditional kit one day and not have too bad of an adjustment period. The look and feel of lower end e-kits, and the noise of acoustic have kept me from my dream of learning drums for over 40 years…
As a side note, why does everyone insist that e-drums need to sound and feel the same as acoustic drums? Imagine all of the music we’d have missed out on if the electric guitar was met with the same resistance and pigeon holed like that!

I mean, there are pianos and keyboards. They look similar, but ... these are different instruments. I would say.
The same goes for acoustic and electronic drums.
I have the TD-50K2 myself and that just like the TD-27KV2 came with the digital ride, snare and hi-Hat and mine also came with the TD-50X module which has separate outputs for each and every single tom, the snare, the kick and the cymbals (ride, crashes and hi-hats)

anyone notice while he was using the Td17kvx at 5:17 the ride cymbal was backwards? roland cymbals are not 360 triggering you have to have the roland logo facing away from you to have the best sensitivity/response
If it weren't for an e kit, I would hardly ever play drums. It came down to , this lets me play when ever or that I can only play sometimes. Love my TD 9 still.
I got the Roland TD-17KV and the Roland HD-3 V-Drums Lite. I love both kits!
I had the same problem where I had to stomp on the pedal really hard to play closed hihat sounds on the roland drum kit TD-17KVX. I fixed it by tightening the knob on top of the hi-hat, going beyond what the collaboration on the screen recommends. Just play around with the knob, dont follow the colaboration. This completely fixed the pedal issue and allowed me to play closed hi-hat notes easily.
Regarding the base drum moving, i just slid an old drum stick across the 2 legs and it holds perfectly. Just sits slightly further back which works better for my longer legs
tuning a drum needs a drum key and ears... tuning an e-kit doesn't need either.
Roland TD-25KVX with a 20-inch bass drum. (Love it) Have done multiple gigs with it. It's worth every dime.

I have to play on electronic as living in appartement, I've mixed acoustic and electronic: mesh head and triggers on a drums plus gen 16 for cymbals. Because the size of cymbals and toms always feel weird for me when playing electronic, next upgrade gonna definitly change the sound module and go for a digital snare, and I think it's gonna be the closer from acoustic but electronic xD

There should be one expansion output next to where Crash 2 connects on the TD 17 module, unless it's a different version from mine
I went with a VAD504 and a couple of extras, so that's a TD-27 and all the cool drum shells (which I wrapped myself) carefully reduced the depth of the kickdrum and plugged it all into SD3...it's killer, spend some time tweaking velocity and you have great nuance and control of dynamics. Hey I'd rather have all acoustic...but I can play 4-6 hours a day if I want...it's a no brainer really.
I bought a Saturn 5 acoustic kit, converted to e-kit got a strike pro module and trigger Superior Drummer 3. Can go acoustic anytime.
I was surprised by these, most E-drums I can tell aren't acoustic, which I like acoustic more, but those two sound pretty good. I'm not smart when it comes to drums though, I know the basic parts but I'm a bassist so I don't know to much about them.
What do you think about the Yamaha DTX6K3-X? I got one and for me it sounds quite nice, only thing that’s a bit tricky is the size of the pads, but its kind like the DTX Pro makes it worth it. Dunno also if the smaller pads could be considered “an advantage” in the sense that you need to be more precise where you hit, while the acoustic ones pads are larger so more space, what are your thoughts?
I got the store demo TD27 for $1500, it was barely touched so basically brand new so I grabbed it immediately. I combined it with other Roland Pads I have and now I have 8 cymbals and 7 drums, plus room for more stuff if I wanted to (I combined the TD27 with the TD11 module).
I'm a beginner drummer with about 20 hours on an acoustic kit. I bought a td-17kvx2 recently. I'm not getting along with it. The pads seem very bouncey and it just doesn't feel natural to me. Granted I just need to spend more time on it but when I eventually move I'll probably be selling the ekit. When that happens tho I'm worried I'll be used to the ekit and dislike my acoustic kit haha.
First thing to do on any e-kit is lower the head tension. I set mine to about the same I'd feel on my acoustic set. Still has more rebound but alot better. I've also heard going to triple ply heads will help but I haven't wanted to bite the bullet on that cost yet So can't confirm that
@@calebpettis9971 I'll try that. I've read you don't want to go too low on the tension though as you'll have problems with triggering.
This is part of the reality I'm sorrry to say. I find acoustic much more satisfying to play both physically (more fun to hit!) and dynamically (sound level is zero to infinity with infinite steps in between). The other reality is sound control. I practice at home and rehearse with edrums and have been gigging with them the majority of the time over the past couple years. And I just bought the TD-27 so, yeah, that's how it goes 😁

I’ve bought (and sold) 2 different E-Kits, one being pretty high end. It’s amazing how far they’ve come tech wise but I’m always left wanting for real drums after only playing E-Kits for a while. If I had money to burn then sure I would have one but until then I’ll just continue annoying my family with the acoustics 😊
I only have 2 kits. One is my DW collectors kit with low volume cymbals and the second is my Roland VAD with digital cymbals. Best of both worlds. I can play acoustic during the day and the ekit during the night. I'm old. No flexing here. Basically, you can work on learning a song with the ekit quietly, then blast away with the acoustic kit. My neighbors only hear the polished product quietly since I have everything muffled. Learn the song and pattern with the ekit and expand on the acoustic kit.

The samples and sensitivity is getting much better but I think the best way to go for recording is a kit like these but with real cymbals/HH . The biggest problem I still see is when you do a steady roll on a particular drum, it sounds like a machine gun, they've got to fix this.
The digital snare fixes this issue but I agree with you on the toms. The entire kit needs to move to a digital sensitivity
I remember seeing a Roland kit in the late 90s being used by Sevendust. As a drummer I think it takes away from the aesthetics. It would be like sending out your favorite guitar player with a keytar. They do have other uses other than live venues though.
My reccomendation for students, that can't use accoustic drum-sets due to noise levels:
Get mesh-heads and low-volume cymbals (made of some alloy with hundreds of tiny holes in them),
don't use an E-kit module, or unplug it.
That way, you can actually work on your tone.
E-kits are basically sound-boards on steroids, they can't mimmic how a real physical drum reacts to changes in input parameters
like stick-angle, stick-weight, etc.
I may not be quite as fun at first, but hearing the not quite as loud sound of the mesh-heads and low-v cymbals
gives you a better idea of how you'd sound on an actual accoustic kit.

It should be noted that the TD-27 with the digital hi-hats is the TD-27KV2 and not the TD-27KV. The TD-27KV2 is worth it as it comes with the digital ride, snare and hi-hats
I got an e kit for Christmas only 2 days ago 😂 I’ve always wanted to start playing drums and I figured this is a good place to start they’ve been great and I’ve already learned a lot, (mostly from your videos!) and if this seems to be an interest that sticks I might look into saving for a proper kit! (Obviously not for a long time)

I considered these, but went for the Efnote 5 when it was on sale for €2100 (might have been a mistake by the site, but I got it for that price). Bought an extra cymbal (4 total) and an Efnote 3 tom and have a pretty awesome kit now.
I contacted them trying to see about getting a unit to check out. I've heard a lot of good things about them. Never heard back though. I would love to give an opinion but I can't if I've never played em. I hear great things though
Have the Efnote 3x. It’s fantastic. Module is pretty basic but the control is there if needed and out of the box the kit sounds great and is fun to play. Paired it with a Porter & Davies and it feels like I’m back at a HoB rocking out.
@@StephenTaylorDrums The hardware is really good, all of it. The cymbals, hat and toms are all great. Roland hardware triggers just as good or even better of course, but the sizes and playability of the efnote is just more comfortable for the same price. The module is a bit of a chore to operate, but it's okay and has lots of in- and outputs. And out of the box the kits sound better than the Roland, plus all of the kits are actually useful. It's really plug and play and for a home practice kit you can't really fault it.
I think it was an odd choice having the segments with the TD-17 without music but included music with the TD-27 clips. It makes the TD-17 sound less impressive, but I’m unsure if that’s because there was nothing accompanying the drum sounds, or if the TD-27 is actually a way better sounding kit. Knowing Roland’s reputation, they’re likely both really great kits, but in a comparison video, I would hope that they’re both represented fairly.
Stephen, could you please answer this and anyone else that may read it? I’m thinking of switching to an E kit exclusively because I cannot hear my acoustic drums through my in ears and Mics without turning the volume of the music up too loud and further damaging my hearing the bleed is too much even with custom in ear monitors and gunshot headphones over that When I’m just practicing I like to just sit behind the kit with no hearing protection any hearing protection I’ve ever used makes the drum sound crappy so I just play cold turkey. I can’t do this anymore my tinnitus is really bad. I’ve done that through my whole childhood. I’m 44 now I played on the Alesis strata prime at guitar Center, but I could only play on it a little bit with no songs to play along too just drums From what little I played on it I very much liked it Is it safe to assume that if I got an kit with headphones on playing music through with drum-less tracks that I would be able to hear much better and have better clarity and a better experience than my current set up with Drum and Mics what would be the difference between the two in your experience Thank you.
Yes, there will be much better isolation and no bleed from the acoustic drums. But, I would go to a music store first and ask them to try it out. That will tell you what you need to know.

As someone living in an apartment, I am forced to play an e-kit... and my kit is _expensive_ (probably around 5 or 6k by now).
But: A considerably cheaper acoustic kit is still way more enjoyable to play, and I'm talking about a kit below 2000 USD in total.
One of my basic issues with e-kits: Yes, they are sensitive, but they are still limited in dynamics. An acoustic drum is a simple, direct translation of the force you put into it. No matter how hard you hit, it will _always_ sound different. An electric drum just tops out at a "sensible" velocity. Another issue is that rubber cymbals, no matter how great they are, still behave very differently than acoustic ones, not to mention that not even the digital ride from Roland comes close to the fun you can have with an actual piece of metal that will sound different in every single spot you hit it.
Also, the direct nature of acoustic drums is a very "primal" thing and, to me, is just a lot of fun.
So... yeah, an e-kit is my only option, and I got a pretty good one that absolutely is enjoyable to play, but I'm still looking forward to every single time I get to play on an acoustic kit (happens about two to four times a month).
PS: If you already have a laptop, do yourself a favor and get drum software of your choice. Superior Drummer 3 or Slate Drums are both pretty fantastic, and both sound _way_ better than anything Roland offers. In my opinion, Slate Drums is quicker to get a nice "produced" and finished sound, but Superior Drummer has better options for "natural" sounds. So, if the _sound_ is the one thing pushing you from the TD-17 to the 27, for example: Just get the TD-17 and some drum software for your laptop.
Great review. My only complaint is that you don't show us what the kit sounds like if you're not wearing earbuds/headphones. ie, How apartment friendly/quiet is it?
It's very quiet. The only thing you would deal with is if you have downstairs neighbors and a thin floor. The vibrations might be a thing. But a ton of my students play ekits in apartments with no issues
If you are a heavy hitter, the thumping can be a bit loud (rim shots and BD) but if you are a controlled player and you have slab floors between apartments, you should be good. I recommend a trip to a music store that carries e-kits and then shop around online for the best deal.

I think you hit the obvious pluses but you missed a huge benefit to e-kits. The progamming makes the e-kit 1,000 times better than an accoustic. I don't play tom rims so I programmed various percussion on the 3 tom rims. I programmed 2 different cymbals on my 2 crashes, splash and china on cymbal top and 2 crashes on edges. Then there is programming drumsets. Dial to another set and the HH is a bass drum for doubke bass. Another set has a tambourine on HH, another has a cowbell with the HH sound so I can play the cowbell with my foot. I set up a latin kit where my floor tom (rim and head) is a conga, the snare (rim and head) is a bongo, and the HH plays the snare. Another amazing feature you lightly touched on is the recording ability. I can patch inputs into my kit, or even go with Bluetooth, and record to the built in SD memory card slot for perfect noise free recordings. The options are unlimited. Hands down, a good e-kit is better than an accoustic. Having said that, it is satisfying at times to really smash on an accoustic kit, but I will forever be an e-kit advocate and they are far cheaper than buying the equivalent in accoustic gear.
So this is an area I haven't explored a lot. I play mostly acoustic but many times I've thought "you know, if I spent some time learning the nuances of programming all hittable areas it would be a game changer. Thanks for pointing that out
My drummer hasn’t played his kit since May due to a new baby and nowhere to play it. He also keeps mentioning trying Fiverr or some other route for some income (he’s a great drummer and taught kit for years). I keep saying edrums but he won’t take the plunge. He just brings up all the bad edrums he tried in the past.
I’m a big fan of electronic kits for practising and recording but when playing live I use an acoustic kit with drum-tec triggers to give me the sound I want. Yes I could get that sound properly mic`ed but I’m working in an amateur situation where the Sound Guy really isn’t going to do much to make those drums sound the way I want. Here’s the thing I never hear anyone talk about… if you are playing electronic drums in a live situation and you don’t have a pristine sound environment where everything is compressed and mixed beautifully you are going to get buried in the mix. I don’t know how many times I’ve had sound guys who don’t like drums just shut them off. You’re at their mercy if they don’t like drums. The other thing is that if there are no compressors on the vocals and you have a powerhouse singer, she/he is going to get so loud that all you will hear from the drums is the clicking of the sticks on the pads.
I started on acoustic and prefer acoustic-especially the cymbals. I haven’t been able to own an acoustic set in years, but I have an electronic set. I enjoy it, but I’ve yet to hear electronic cymbals (including hi hat) that sounds authentic.
Sometimes i wish i had bought an Ekit instead of my set i bought. At least you can tune the cymbals to sound how you want which is a money saver and time saver. From what I've understood anyways.

I’ve been playing ekits since 2012, been playing drums since 1973,
I had an acoustic kit, it was cheap, sounded bad and annoyed everyone around me. It was also fiddly to play along to a song. Bought a yamaha tdk-700 on special (ex demo kit $1000 off), it sounds ok, lets me play almost anytime i like and, it has an internal mixer so plugging my ipad in and playing along to a song is super easy.
So for me its e-kits all the way. I’m just trying to find a really good, but affordable, speaker for the times when i want to make some noise. Thats the other thing, you can adjust the volume!

just about any decent powered monitor/pa speaker will do (mackie/samson, etc). i'd steer clear of the branded speakers from the ekit makers (roland/alesis, etc) - you're overpaying for the name and i see a lot of complaints surrounding them. you'll also have to get familiar with your module to optimize the sounds/kits.... the default levels are most likely to sound like trash the first time you play them on speaker
Love it for home practice; hate them for live performance and the power goes out. Happened twice; said never again, LOL :D Still not a fan of e-cymbals. Last used e-kits over 20 years ago; so not up on the latest e-kits.

I haven't played my acoustic set in over a year now since I moved to a place where I can't. I keep checking out videos like this one every few weeks to try to convince myself to get an E kit just so I can play again, but every video I've seen leaves me prefering to not play at all. I mean $3k before you get something that feels somewhat like an acoustic set...but still sounds not that great IMO. I'd rather buy a new set of Zildjian K's and hang them on the wall.
I’m a hobbyist guitarist, and I 100% prefer playing with drummers on e-kits. The sound quality is so much nicer and the volume is so much more manageable. Playing with acoustic drums makes my ears feel like I went to a top fuel drag race. Who cares if your hi-hat feel isn’t quite right. E-drums can handle 100% of all beats the rest of the band want you to play.
Yikes. You know they make ear plugs right? E-drums are useful tools...when they work, but there's no substitute for the full-on real deal.
...get custom earplugs. Acoustic drums will always be better than E drums. Have better drummers that tune their gear.
I dont know. I have been playing guitar and bass in multiple bands since the early eighties. I prefer drummers that use actual drums.
Acoustic drums will always be ideal, but electronic kits have gotten really good!

I guess I will always prefer acoustic kits for their sound live. Electronic kits have come a long way from their early years and some of them are quite versatile and sound great. I hope to get a Roland TD 27 in the future. I currently have a PDP Double Drive, 8 piece acoustic kit and an old Yamaha XTreme IIS that I used to practice with. I bought it from a friend for nostalgia reasons, but it is outdated and not suficient for my current needs. The new DW Ekits look exciting also.
i hear a lot of different church setups and ekits are a million miles better than acoustic in virtually every application - assuming someone knows how to mix and eq the onboard sound - otherwise, you may as well be playing the percussion sounds off a keyboard (how it sounds in this demo)
I use real cymbals on my electronic kit.
I find this is a particularly weak area on most e kits.
What's the difference between this hihat of 1.152 $ and a Lemon Hihat of 170$ ?? What do you believe? I personally never pay for a hihat too much money as Roland costing his products!! This price is a non understantable situation!!!

ANY drum set is a Good Drum set! (as long as they are a real instrument, and not a "toy". Parents so often by their children a "toy" for their first drums and then wonder why their kid doesn't play it. It's a toy, not a true musical instrument. That's why).
Its the same as acustic gutitar and electric guitar. Two different instrument. Roland is the scam to much expensive. I used to have Roland TD9. Now i am using yamaha dtx multi 12 with extension and my acustic kits.
I get all the reasons why e-kits are great (volume control being the biggest one, either in practice or playing live....like in a church). I guess I'm just OLD.....nothing has quite the sound or feel of a real wood kit. I know there are no sponsors for "used" equipment, but for $3k? You can get one hell of a used drum kit hardware and cymbals. Is it going to be an 8 piece kit with 15 cymbals? Probably NOT (although there ARE deals out there), but you aren't getting that with an e-kit either.
The ONE thing about an e-kit that makes it interesting, is the ability to have several different kits in one.....whatever someone has sampled out there. So you COULD have a sample of a 1960s Rogers kit, and a Bonham-esques ludwig kit, and Steve Gadd's Yamaha kit, and on and on. In ONE e-kit, you COULD have an 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 bass drum sampled.....you COULD have 6" - 18" Toms sampled....you COULD have a 26" Ride and 22" crash cymbals sampled.
OR.....you COULD own all of those drums and cymbals separately ...... LOL.
Yeah i would like an acoustic but I’d never be allowed to play it. With three shift workers in the house and neighbours all around, my life expectancy would be very short.
I prefer acoustic drums because of the sound and feel during impact, but electric ones can be pretty useful.

Roland or Roland. Nothing says unbiased like not entertaining other high end electronic kits. Try Boom Theory. My spacemuffins kit by boom theory from the early nineties plays better than any roland kit I've sat behind. These are the two ekits I own. Shall I speak about ekits I've never played? I never said these were the best ekits. I simply compared the two and offered reasons why an ekit might be better for some people. Calm down. I honestly hear ef notes are fantastic but you won't hear me speak on one until I've played one. I could care less if you buy Roland or Alexis or efnote or any other ekit brand.
@@StephenTaylorDrums the way you presented this entire video was as of your trying to sell your fans on buying one. Even the video name suggests that. I'm perfectly calm, but Roland is way overpriced over hyped stuff. Their modules are their best part. Their cymbals come in second, but their drum pads are severely lacking. IMHO
With those sound it is not even close up to cheap acoustic drum set.
The higher models have some pretty insane sound banks to pull from. As well, you can load your own samples. Just really depends on the situation
i honestly don't know why edrum modules ship with such poorly mixed and EQ'd default sounds. you can get excellent professional sound out of ekits suited for any venue size with someone who understands sound and actually knows how to navigate the menus (no need to purchase additional sounds). most people who complain about ekit sounds are technologically challenged and think cranking everything to max is the solution. i understand just wanting to hop on and hitting skins, but ekits are a totally different beast in many aspects - and in many ways, so much better

@@StephenTaylorDrums I did. Been playing for 35 years, started when l was 10. l go to a lot of shows, and played A LOT of gigs myself. I haven't seen an e kit on stage yet. The 'feel' of an e kit is totally different than acoustic. If you live in an apartment or something then l understand. But eventually you gotta play acoustic. Yes it's more work, but l have NO problem putting in the extra work. I respect your opinion, and I'm not being a hater.

Let's talk about this...I say no to more reviews than I say yes to. I contacted sweetwater and said "hey. I've got a ton of students that play ekits and have no clue what the difference is for different models. I am going to do a video on this, do you guys want to be a part of it?"
The idea was mine, the thoughts were mine, and these are two ekits I consistently suggest to my students. You will not see a product or drum reviewed on this channel that I do not use myself or have experience with. The only reason I work with sweetwater when I come up with an idea that might work for them is because they welcome the good, bad, and ugly. And if I work with a company, I say so at the front of the video.
So I get it, we've been conditioned to think that the review is biased because someone works with a company on a video. But that's not true. I have made a career of being honest and open on this channel. It would be silly of me to change that now just to do a sponsored video with a company. You are welcome to think what you want, but my history on this channel and honesty on all fronts should speak for itself by now (I would hope at least).
If you ever visit my studio, both of these kits are setup for students to play. And I don't keep crap at my place...only good gear 🤘🏻

The only bias I saw was that he preferred the higher end kit because of the better snare, hi hat, and ride. He was very clear that there is a big price difference, though. So I didn’t see anything misleading. Both kits were reviewed. He just prefers the higher end model. What’s wrong with that?
