Great video! Always producing quality content. I seen you just became aware that multiple receivers could bind at same time. Not sure if your aware that us wing pilots have know about this for a while now and use it to bind two elrs 5 channel receivers and use channel remapping available in web configurator to set them up so we have up to 10 full resolution pwm outputs and or various redundancies or receiver diversity. Tons of new options and things to learn ans explore with elrs. No doubt best New thing in rc control links in a long long time.
I think this mainly applies to the pwm elrs receivers us wing guys use. Most of them have 5 pwm outputs. Channel 5 is mostly useless because it's arming switch.Only high or low. We can remap outputs of the receiver though so that channel 5 output will use channel 6 instead. Channel 5 however still works internally and arms/disarms elrs. So we map output 5 to be controlled by input channel 6. By binding to two receivers at the same time though we can map the second receivers outputs to use channels 7 8 9 10 11 or whatever and effectively have loads of pwm outputs and its still tiny and light weight. We use higher latency full protocols to take advantage of full resolution of alot of channels. As in 150 full or something around that. Anyway. Its just another cool thing that pertains to ability to connect to multiple receivers we wing guys take advantage of.

And a melding of this would be since you now know multiple receivers can bind at same time and that pwm receives can have there outputs remapped to output whatever channels you'd like then a utility quad or cinema type quad could utilize a second receiver with pwm outputs to control grapling hooks or things used to recover a lost quad or control pan and tilt or all kinds of whatever one could imagine and be piggy backed onto existing receiver. So.....primary receiver connected to flight control using first 6 channels and second pwm receiver also bound and set to output channels 7 thru whatever to control various other functions.

Surprised how well it does outside in a little breeze on 1s.
Frsky's micro R9m TX module, on ELRS, with heat sink and fan mod (at your own risk) can also output 2W. So the Ranger isn't actually first. However, R9m hardware operates on 900mHz, so maybe it's pioneer in the more popular 2.4gHz frequency spectrum?
Been holding out only because so many options. But now RM has one designed to work with their radios. Looking more at it. I new to RC and new to RadioMaster. I have a 16s Mk II with the 4 in 1 on board. I watched your video on the RadioMaster external modules for ELRS. I understand that the Ranger has the highest output at 2W. But you didn't really discuss whether there were any major differences (other than power and some external controls) with the other two modules. From their website, it looks like the Ranger fits with the micro adapter and the Ranger Micro would be a direct fit. The Ranger Nano would fit other transmitters. Is that correct? If you not looking to go to two watts, is there any real disadvantages to using the Ranger Micro?
Your right about that express lrs module by beta fpv. I got the same one a while back and it was impossible to flash. I had to look online and find a video showing how to do it. You can flash it if you take the module apart and hold down a tiny button on the board the whole time it’s flashing. It took me 6 months to figure this out. Almost gave up because first time I held the wrong button 😂
Great review as usual, with the motion controller it only works when there is no quad armed or flying when you put it down, at least that’s what I heard. It would be a nice module to get. Stay safe
Please can you do a power test of the micro version as well. I've seen 2 other reviewers reporting lower power. I'd be interested to see if you have the same issue with your module. Thanks
Awesome video thanks for all the info. I’m new to the hobby and still don’t understand. The controller situation with the ELRS or 4in1. So if I get a radio with ELRS does that mean I don’t need any of the modules for ELRS because they’re already programmed into the radio. Or does that radio will only work with ELRS modules? I’ve been trying to find a video that explains this for complete noobs with no understanding, but can’t find one.
@@JoshuaBardwell thanks for the reply and the help. If I get a controller with built in ELRS. Can you still use an external module that is ELRS? I’m trying to decide if I get the Ranger and for some crazy reason that module stops working I can still use the controller with the built-in as a back up. Or should I get a controller with 4 in 1. Just use the ELRS as the external module. Update: I watched more of your videos I now see on the radiomaster16s. You can enable and disable internal and external module. Does someone make four in one external modules for this radio?
I pre-ordered this in November.........stated shipping starts in December and it now January and no one has them .........review samples were sent premature
Any chance of a PPM compatibe ELRS Tx module? The low packet rates are fine for long range fixed wing operation, and telemetry can be done via a different channel (e.g. LTE/4G).
@Joshua You're not comparing apples to apples. The big one is like the big CRSF one, which is priced at 249 USD. That's like less than half of TBS asks for their top of the line hardware.
Great show .Big J can you yell at them all and tell them to off IPEX plug for the SMA on the RX boards ! Look at the rx plug under a microscope , the circular belt is only fastened by two microscopic prongs ! who wants a jar full of perfect RX's with ripped off plugs !
Great reviews and information. On getting a new Ranger ELRS I have noticed the fan noise on higher wattage setting even 250mW and above as the fan gets faster which is annoying. Often a trait of small fans. As it was not mentioned in your video review either I have a lower quality fan / manufacturing issue in my unit or its not something important enough to report on i.e is considered acceptable / normal fan background noise. Perhaps this issue is more common in the Ranger module and there is a fan upgrade someone has done to remndy this?
Regarding the open-source 'ExpressLRS'.. why isn't the DX9 listed in the 'Hardware Selection' page? What transmitter / receiver combo would you recommend for use on a budget drone, like the Holy Stone HS720E or DJI Mini SE?
DJI Mini has its own controller and does not work with 3rd party systems. I don't know anything about the HolyStone but my guess is the same conclusion applies. DX9 can technically be used with ELRS, but I don't recommend it.
The comments about "low standards" in the FPV quad world are really interesting because it's not something I really think about often. It's an especially interesting comparison to other branches of RC where things are more reliable, but also simpler and more expensive. Just compare the TX16S to something like the DX8 or a Futaba radio: you know you're getting reliable hardware, but they also cost 2-3 times more and you also don't get anywhere near the same development speed, compatible software, or cutting-edge features
What elbow are you using on the Ranger to the attenuator? Where did you get it? I am thinking of leaving it on as well to reduce wear on it being I remove the antenna every time I box it up for transport. Maybe even thinking of a straight one, instead of a 90° one.
Jeez! my Happymodel TX tops out at 100mw.... 2watts is wild! Think i need to swap out my Happy as ive had rare and random failsafe's at less than 100 meters in the past. Good vid!
You may be suffering from the oscillator issues that have recently been discovered that cause frequency drift which can lead to a lockout. There is now a test that you can do by flashing firmware with a special command to both transmitter and receiver and check. Basically helps identify if the frequency is matching or out of spec. New hardware is already emerging with temperature controlled oscillators to help remedy the issue. There is a page on the expresslrs site called "ExpressLRS 3.0 Crystal Oscillator (XO) Frequency Error" that give the info. I would look into that as it may identify and solve your issue.
Great videos JB. I was hoping you could clear something up for me. I have and love my Spektrum ix12 and I want to add the ranger module to my arsenal. I've messaged back and forth with people from horizon hobby, radiomaster, getfpv, pyrodrone, 2 discords, and a few FB groups and everyone single person except one said they've never even heard such a scenario. Literally, never even though of it. Which threw me cause all of my fixed-wing buddies have Spectrum transmitters and are seriously interested in ELRS One guy on a discord said that Crossfire accepts PPM but ELRS doesn't. So though there may be a connector on the back of the ix12 for a crossfire cable (SPMA3090), it still might not work. He then sent me to page 246 of the ix12 manual but it doesn't specify how it's sending signals to crossfire. I think he's convinced that the ix12 sends out PPM signals that get converted in that crossfire cable or in the crossfire module to CSFR. If that's the case, its a no go. Please lmk what you think.
The 40$ price range looks good, but at some point in the video you mentioned there are also some good alternatives around 60$ with a led screen? You mentioned AxistFlying Thor, but if I remember correctly those are something like 150$?!
No problem with my betafpv first batch nano tx. I simply have to open up the module every time i flash and press a tiny button throughout the whole flashing process. lol
Have you examined Express LRS with the EP 1 and EP 2 receivers for penetration. I plan on using it inside in warehouses, large houses etc so curious about penetration at different mw output from transmitters, receivers and refresh frequencies. Thanks, love your videos. Have watched enough of the to have earned a Masters Degree from Bardwell University. If Joshua doesn't know, no one knows.
Josh, I am pulling my hair out. Have the Ranger Big Boi model, but motion detect setting....is not a setting at all on my unit... i scroll through the menu on the Ranger and it just cycles thru power, handset, wifi, etc, but NO MENTION of motion detect... everything else is linked and working, but my transmitter (TX16xs) power is getting depleted fast. Thinking if the motion detect was on, it would help a alot. and when i flip the radio upside down- the lights and screen on the Big Boi stay on >:(
I am just wondering, why Wezley Varty has removed all the ELRS videos from his channel. Further ELRS range challenge table doesn't have his experiments.
Jb I'm going to get either your tx16s or the bunker? Or whatever that new one is called, but I don't want that screen. Anyway, I have the qx7 taranis, I don't have an rf power meter. Do you think my qx7 can do 500 and 1000mw? Thank you
Is there a storage solution available for a tx16s with a ranger module? It seems that it's not good to remove the antenna all the time, or the complete module. Without the antenna it will fit the foam case, but that will kill the SMA connector eventually. And removing the module every single time seems harmfull to me too.
@Joshua Bardwell I have a question : those modules are using rp-sma connector, and if I want, can I disassemble it and chang a picktale or use rp-sma to sma adapter?
Good video. Unfortunately it seems that on fccio for all of this companies different products the highest output power tested compliant is 170mw ... so ?
JB what is that silver cylinder (and what is the purpose of it) @ 11:27 that is connected between the TX and your power meter? I have the same power meter by IMRC and need to know if I need something like that. Thanks!
It's a 6 dB attenuator. The power meter has max input power 1 watt, so if the unit you're testing goes near or over 1 watt, you need an attenuator to bring the input power down.
Correct. ELRS requires arm to be channel 5 (aux1) and high = armed, low = disarmed. It does this for things like dynamic power and other underlying mechanisms that benefit from knowing whether you're armed or not.
@@JoshuaBardwell Interesting. What if the user wants the modes tab in Betaflight set to high = disarmed? Can the user reverse the channel to achieve this?
Weird, my betafpv nano module works flawlessly. Is there batch variation? I haven't had a hickup in flashing or using it. What is the issue with that happens with it?
Is the big boy can work with other radios like car radios like a crossfire can? Can it receive ppm signal through that port for futabas? Or it just something like sbus port? Can someone check it please? I must know that before I buy it. Thank you!
@JoshuaBardwell please advise. TX16S Mark II Max Radio Controller (Joshua Bardwell Edition / ELRS / M2) has ELRS in-built. Is this in-built ELRS module different from the Ranger module (not the 2W version but 1W versions)?
@JoshuaBardwell Looks like the Tx16S can not go beyond 250mw. The FCC certification documents in downloads mention output as 0.2 something. Am I understanding this correctly?
That is correct. Sorry for the confusion. It's the same as the Ranger in that it's 2.4 GHz ELRS but the internal module won't go to 1W without active cooling. That's why the Boxer goes to 1W and the TX16S doesn't.
@JoshuaBardwell no problem. Thank you for confirming. Just ordered Boxer Crush using your radiomaster affiliate link. The resources on your website are very helpful.

I keep trying to get to the 2W video and can’t find it, it just keeps saying that it’s private.
@11:45 If you're like me and you thought "ELRS requires ARM on AUX5?!", He means on CHANNEL 5, which is AUX1.
I have always wondered which end of the antenna the "beam" came out of! Boom - answered.
It depends on the design of the antenna.
Great review as usual, with the motion controller it only works when there is no quad armed or flying when you put it down, at least that’s what I heard.
It would be a nice module to get. Stay safe
Holds up a DX6E - the exact thing I'm trying to a upgrade from
Please can you do a power test of the micro version as well. I've seen 2 other reviewers reporting lower power. I'd be interested to see if you have the same issue with your module. Thanks
Yes I did test it in this video. It was fine.
@@JoshuaBardwell sorry I must have missed it. I only spotted you testing the nano and full size one.👍
Glad to see a in depth review on this
Thanks!
If you buy a radio with built in ELRS, then you do not need an ELRS module. You can bind to ELRS receivers using the built-in module in the radio.
I pre-ordered this in November.........stated shipping starts in December and it now January and no one has them .........review samples were sent premature
good video ,,,, the switches on the new radiomaster boxer are they short or long ,,,,, im ordering switch covers and need to know what size
Great vid bro! ELRS all the way!!!
How again do we get to that 2 watts??
Any chance of a PPM compatibe ELRS Tx module? The low packet rates are fine for long range fixed wing operation, and telemetry can be done via a different channel (e.g. LTE/4G).
Can you do a short video of how to do the 2w hack as his videos are gone.
Hello does thiswork on radiomaster pocket ?
@Joshua You're not comparing apples to apples. The big one is like the big CRSF one, which is priced at 249 USD. That's like less than half of TBS asks for their top of the line hardware.
Great show .Big J can you yell at them all and tell them to off IPEX plug for the SMA on the RX boards ! Look at the rx plug under a microscope , the circular belt is only fastened by two microscopic prongs ! who wants a jar full of perfect RX's with ripped off plugs !
Thanks for the great video. Can the big module used with the Radiomaster TX16S first edition?
Is the amps enhough for the maximum 2 watt?
Great reviews and information. On getting a new Ranger ELRS I have noticed the fan noise on higher wattage setting even 250mW and above as the fan gets faster which is annoying. Often a trait of small fans. As it was not mentioned in your video review either I have a lower quality fan / manufacturing issue in my unit or its not something important enough to report on i.e is considered acceptable / normal fan background noise. Perhaps this issue is more common in the Ranger module and there is a fan upgrade someone has done to remndy this?
On 11:45: You meant AUX1, right? (Channel 5 in your case?)
Yes aux 1 that's correct.
What happened to the 2w hack's video link ?? The one in the description no longer works
I'll take my preorder any day.
you still waiting?
Jeez! my Happymodel TX tops out at 100mw....
Which threw me cause all of my fixed-wing buddies have Spectrum transmitters and are seriously interested in ELRS
One guy on a discord said that Crossfire accepts PPM but ELRS doesn't.
89 sometimes on sale- I own it and it’s a beast.
NamimnoRC Flash (2.4GHz) or the Voyager (900MHz) - those have OLED screens too..
The Betafpv Micros both have screens as well.
No problem with my betafpv first batch nano tx. I simply have to open up the module every time i flash and press a tiny button throughout the whole flashing process. lol
Amazing you were able to get one, Radiomaster seems to be ghosting me, where meh sheaaatttt beeeaattchhhh!
Radiomaster recommend do not use the XT30 input on your Ranger Nano or Ranger Micro.
DX9 on top… this is compelling actually
Josh, I am pulling my hair out. Have the Ranger Big Boi model, but motion detect setting....is not a setting at all on my unit... i scroll through the menu on the Ranger and it just cycles thru power, handset, wifi, etc, but NO MENTION of motion detect... everything else is linked and working, but my transmitter (TX16xs) power is getting depleted fast. Thinking if the motion detect was on, it would help a alot. and when i flip the radio upside down- the lights and screen on the Big Boi stay on >:(
I'm thinking of getting the micro for the mambo and Tango2 for some whoops. Even though it seemed to be beaten by the nano
if you power it externally you can drive them all up to 2W.
Thick boy comes with the Moxon antenna and the T antenna.
I just bought a RadioMaster Zorro and I want to buy an ELRS module for it. Can you advise me on which is the best ELRS module for this Radio? Thanks
9:05 😂 I bleeping love you man
I am just wondering, why Wezley Varty has removed all the ELRS videos from his channel. Further ELRS range challenge table doesn't have his experiments.
Because he got fined $3k by CASA for his flights violating local rules.
@@JoshuaBardwell thanks for the info, but so sad for him 😢...
Jb I'm going to get either your tx16s or the bunker? Or whatever that new one is called, but I don't want that screen.
Anyway, I have the qx7 taranis, I don't have an rf power meter. Do you think my qx7 can do 500 and 1000mw?
Thank you
I don't know for sure. You might want to use an XT30.
As long as you unplug it real quick, it's probably gonna be fine. It's one of those 5 second rule things. ;-)
(mad's tech also released a teardown video just yesterday on these so no need to scratch your pretty new TX's)
I have bought the nano and i have a radiomaster boxer controller . Are there any available adapters?
Is there a storage solution available for a tx16s with a ranger module?
It seems that it's not good to remove the antenna all the time, or the complete module.
Without the antenna it will fit the foam case, but that will kill the SMA connector eventually. And removing the module every single time seems harmfull to me too.
Thanks!
but you didn't say if external lipo is protected against discharge below safe level
@Joshua Bardwell I have a question : those modules are using rp-sma connector, and if I want, can I disassemble it and chang a picktale or use rp-sma to sma adapter?
really good video!! really good!!
So I need a separate power supply for it on my tx16s?
Please radiomaster make a pistol grip style elrs controller for rc trucks boats Please 🙏
Is the nano module compatible with the Boxer transmitter?
That motion thing is odd since you can already set variable power mode.
How to unbrick Radiomaster Micro Elrs module after update not working?
Good video. Unfortunately it seems that on fccio for all of this companies different products the highest output power tested compliant is 170mw ... so ?
I'm frankly amazed they submitted to the FCC at all.
You aren't going to find someone selling a part 15 certified 1 watt transmitter if that's what you are after.
Will the Nano version fit in a FrSky x9-Lite ? With the slightly recessed Nano bay
I hope this question gets answered since I am currently using the Nano module he keeps on using as a bad example (in my Taranis x-lite radio) ;-)
@@UnlimitedVertical and will it fit Frsky Tandem X20, which claims to accept nano modules and does take the betafpv nano module?
@@3dflyer347 I guess we'll find out eventually. In the meantime the betafpv nano module is working fine for me.
When are they going to start shipping I ordered my thick boy a week ago 😂
are you saying the micro is not pure 1 watt power tx?
JB what is that silver cylinder (and what is the purpose of it) @ 11:27 that is connected between the TX and your power meter? I have the same power meter by IMRC and need to know if I need something like that. Thanks!
It's a 6 dB attenuator. The power meter has max input power 1 watt, so if the unit you're testing goes near or over 1 watt, you need an attenuator to bring the input power down.
You say it works with the Spectrum DX, so will it work with the NX series seeing how they are a better line?
Your arm switch MUST be on Aux 5 and MUST be in a certain position in order to use ELRS??? (referencing 11:45 in your video)
FYI: Wesley's video is now marked as private.
Just asking but I have a 4watt 2.4ghz booster will this work as well on the Zoro radios for distance?
Weird, my betafpv nano module works flawlessly. Is there batch variation? I haven't had a hickup in flashing or using it. What is the issue with that happens with it?
So j can use this with my X lite Pro?!
Are any of these modules compatible with the FrSky Taranis X9D Plus?
Is the big boy can work with other radios like car radios like a crossfire can? Can it receive ppm signal through that port for futabas? Or it just something like sbus port? Can someone check it please? I must know that before I buy it. Thank you!
Whay has it an Accelereometer?
Is it compatible with taranis x9d + 2019?
@JoshuaBardwell please advise. TX16S Mark II Max Radio Controller (Joshua Bardwell Edition / ELRS / M2) has ELRS in-built. Is this in-built ELRS module different from the Ranger module (not the 2W version but 1W versions)?
This is the same as the Ranger yes. 2.4 GHz elrs.
Wow, that is very similar to the full sized crossfire module
It Will be Good for my old taranis plus ???
Hi I have a question about the Ranger ELRS it does not start anymore When i connect via USB it start blinking yellow after a while it change to blinkingGreen yellow is it bricked?
Ima try n watch this whole video but I'm really just tryna figure out if a module will give me better range than built in elrs on tx16s mk2
Yes the module can go to 1W while the built in ELRS only goes to 250 mW.
As usual, your review is the best! Does anyone knows if i can use those module on rc cars radios?
Please show us the Bluetooth gamepad feature 😢
So the Radiomaster Elrs boxer comes with same 1 w module built in ?
Looks nice, but they need a 915MHz version.
