Your method worked beautifully! I decided to push the limits and do a very short "mild" winter in the fridge, only keeping the seeds in the fridge for 1 week. I pulled them out and stuck them next to a vent, and within 1 week nearly ALL of my lavender seeds had germinated! I assumed I would only get 50% germination at best, so I started too many seeds (probably close to 100) but I picked the best 25 and put them in jiffy peat pellets. I'll transplant them to my garden in about a month and get my lavender hedge going. Thank you so much for making such an excellent video!
Wow! even I am impressed. It's good to know 1 week sufficed. (I had not tried that) PS- it's not my method, but I'm glad to share it :-)
Beans & Greens I’m glad I read your comment. I have zero patience. I’m gonna try two weeks and see if that’s enough.
After one week it in refrigerator what is next step plz explain? 😐
@SHELLEY ROBICHAUX I bought my seeds from Seedville USA on Etsy. Here: www.etsy.com/listing/509582108/500-true-english-lavender-vera-lavender?ref=shop_home_active_4&crt=1
Good luck to you, mine sprouted like crazy.
Beans & Greens
This is the ONLY method that has worked for me. I love it!! Close to 100% germination. THANK YOU!!!! Blessings from Nova Scotia
Looking at a big blue sky in rural Australia listening to your album Taproot... ugly joy cry, you know? It's beautiful.. no words, just gratitude 💖
What’s your favorite song? If I may ask?
Yours is a great method. No problems, I stratified as you described and had the first sprouts within 2 days of putting the plate under light. I'm only 4 days into it now, and have 36 tiny but sturdy-looking plants potted up already. Thanks for sharing!
Just following up, 2 weeks after my initial post. I got very nearly 100% germination, and each of the germinated seeds transplanted to tray cells in starting mix, and are doing very well. Most already have their first true leaves already, even though the seedlings are still very small. I also want to say "thanks" for putting me on to the tool you use--have had one for years, but never thought to use it for working with seedlings.
Oh goodness, thanks so much! I was so frustrated by my absolute failure with lavender last year. Now I feel like I'll have a fighting chance.
Jordan Chabbert ..agree too frustrating to wait 2 months & fail..err. Lol
Jordan Chabbert did it work?
I propagate my lavenders from cuttings. Works every time. I'm going to try growing them from seeds next, just for the experience. I love how you're never afraid to take the road less travelled and experiment in your garden.
I've always wanted to do them from cuttings but what time of year? Also where did you learn to do it? I'm wondering if there is a video I can watch on that process
How? 😂
What a great video!! Loved this one a ton!
Thanks Luke!
I find myself watching your videos over and over (and sharing them) in order to remember all of the wonderful information. I am trying your method of growing Lavender here in the South. Please keep posting these entertaining yet educational videos. You have a style that is truly unique!
Just took my seeds out after being in the fridge for 40 days and they started sprouting under my florescent lights in three days :) Lots of them! Thank you so much.
Even I am surprise at just how well this works
Is your environment warm of cold for it to germinate?
Did you put them in dirt under your lights or left in the paper towel
@@apocalypticbehaviors1560 hi I literally was just about to ask the same question lol. Let's hope she can get back to us. Natalie 😀
I'm thrilled I found your channel. Right now I'm growing about 15+ different veggies/herbs/fruits at the same time with some different varieties of flowers and growing/propagating succulents. Sometimes I feel in over my head! So I'm glad to find such helpful videos. I already see mistakes I've made but that's ok, I know for next time :) Just subscribed.
You're not alone Sharon Triana ... I feel the same way ... dang, I only have 5 seedlings so far ... didn't do it this way though. I'll try again
I always get great results when I start my seedlings in coconut coir soil. Most of my current veggies started off this way. I would say you should try it out next time you're starting some new seeds.
I'm pretty sad though because I had started some cucumbers from seeds and they were finally growing into some nice sized cucumbers when iguanas came and chomped on all the cucumber plants, not one saved. Here in Florida it's been taken over by iguanas. I need to find a way to keep them away.
This works I have grown lavender like this before 10 out of 10 would recommend.
I used this method and it works! Placed the seeds in the fridge for a month, then sowed it in the potting mix (70% coco peat 30% vermi compost). Then in 5 days, some of it has been germinated. I live in tropical weather, and i failed germinating the lavender in my previous attempt. Thanks so much the information!
Fantastic!
Did you also water the seedlings after planting them in the potting mix? I want to try this and I'm excited but I'm afraid not to overwater them.
@@adelaivascu9129 no i didn’t, apparently the water didn’t dry out in the fridge for almost a week. However, after germinating, you need to place in cool temperature (i.e. in air con room). Otherwise the plant wont survive if it is too hot
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I have tried to germinate lavender but I always failed but hopefully I will have a lot of lavender this summer. I used two packs of seeds (approx 120seeds) I had 107 germinated, healthy lavender seeds. I transferred them and can’t wait to plant them in April! Thank you so much again🙏🏻
great, like a surgeon with that tool. thx for the family friendly stuff as always
You know, I'm glad plants can't sue for malpractice. :-)
What is that tool? I would love to find one as I have my lavender chilling right now!
Hey you, fancy seeing you here ;)
It looks like a 'urethral sound' which is a medical device for probing and dilating passages in the body ... such as the urethra. They are also used for sexual gratification/stimulation in men. They are readily available online through the usual big box suppliers. Not all styles have the wide, flat end ... handy in keeping the sound from being inserted too far into the urethra. They usually come in sets of different gauges and are tapered on one end. Now we have yet another use for them.
No, it's a tool for sculpting sold at harbor freight. It is a bit sharp Stephen
Perfect timing on this video! I have some lavender I want to grow this year. Thanks so much!
Awesome. I hope it works well with you. Make sure you have new seeds.
@@suburbanhomestead help me, I tray sereral time, but fail
I just got a ohhh moment. Never could get mine to grow. This explains a lot. Thanks so much for the info!! Will be trying this for sure.
I tried your method and got almost full germination on the whole batch! Thanks so much for your great advice! I got several good sized seedlings, then through the summer (after putting them in beds outside and basically ignoring them) I still have about 60% of them that stayed up and grew strong in spite of my neglect!
Melissa Fields how long did they take to sprout after coming out of the fridge? Mine have been out for a week and I got one sprout almost immediately, which I’ve planted, and no more yet
Laura Chapman Gaasemyr they all sprouted their baby root shoot within about the same amount of time... within 4-5 days as I recall. There were a few stragglers that took a bit longer but didn’t do well after planting on soil. The energetic starters seemed like they did the best overall.
I'm glad that I found this video. I plan to pick up some lavender and start some plants for spring time. Thank you for posting.
OMG!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have failed twice trying to plant Lavender by seed. I can't wait to try this on the rest of my seeds.
Hope it works. You do need brand new seed because they loose viability.
Well I've tried more than a few times to grow lavender, I just thought I wasn't doing something right, n now I know, .. I wasn't! Lol
I'm sure going to give this a try ! Thanks so much for sharing!
Oh my, I wish I had known this years ago. I too love lavender but have resisted buying the started plants. Several times in the past few years I've bought a packet of seeds, planted them, waited...not one sprout ever. I can't wait to try this. Too late this year (July 28) but next spring... Thank you!
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. My husband and I are going to begin watching all your videos from the first to the most recent. Delightful, refreshing, positive, informative, whimsical, creative, calming, mouth-watering those are some words I would use with having seen but a few of your wonderful videos. I wish you were our neighbor.
Siloe and Mirian, thanks for putting this together. I never tried lavender by seed due to knowing low rate of germination. Doing this tonight. thanks for all your direction.
This was a great video. I watched it again as a refresher. Now that I am a little further ahead in my gardening experience I offer two more options that I have used. You can put the starts in individual cups as you demonstrated. I have also put the seed start in a soil block and let continue growing and then transplanted. Soil blocking takes less space and the block is packed with nutrients (manure). Lastly you can take the seed start ant put it in an AeroGarden. I have even rooted cuttings in an AeroGarden. All of these are successful methods.. The one you choose will depend on how much life time you have. Lavender grown in an Aero Garden is really robust and healthy and grows fast. Again thank you for a great video.
I'm not sure how long ago you put this video up but, I found your method of sprouting lavender interesting. I followed your advise with a small packet of seeds I picked up at the end of the season sale. I had so much success with the seeds I'm excited to grow more.
It is great to hear that. Thanks for checking back here.
I'm from Malaysia and didn't have high hopes for germinating lavender. 4 days out of the fridge, a couple of seeds sprouted! Thanks for the instructions! Hoping to see it grow now.
Omg I love your filming and production style and this was so helpful!!!! I’m hooked on your channel!
I hope those little plants appreciate all the hard work and love you invested in them!
Beautiful filmed video well done ✅
I just placed my seeds in the fridge as u suggested . can't wait for them To germinate..thanks for the info and for taking your time to make it....it's muchly appreciated. Thankyou
OMG finally a good lavender video thanks so many people with their crazy vids just of them talking and talking not saying anything with real information ℹ️ thanks for yours it’s a good vid 😂😂🤣
inspired by the creativity at team Oliveira. appreciation from Austin, TX
Glad I watched this before potting up my seeds, which have been in the refrigerator in a baggie with a moist towel for 34 days.
I will be doing this today. No wonder I had no luck last year.😮 Thank you.
Thanks for the great video! I have been attempting to grow lavender while quarantining and just noticed yesterday that after several weeks...I have a couple teeny seedlings coming up. As you noted....the germination rate is abysmal so I'm really looking forward to trying your method. I just ordered more munstead variety and hopefully I can contain my excitement for 30 to 40 days before I give it a try. Thanks again...I would have never thought of this.
Some people in the comments did only 7 days in the fridge. Maybe you can try a batch like that to see how well it works for you
By this method I have over 40 plants now from one pack I bought :) Thanks for the tip.
no wonder i'm having trouble. i've been trying to get mine to germinate since feb. 8th. i didn't know they needed the cold first! thank you sooo much.👍
you are welcome. I tried and failed many years until I stumbled upon this secret. Even with this process they are still slow, but way better. Buy new seed and try this.
P. C. It worked for me in 7 days for germination the ones i did freeze. The ones i didnt freeze i planted directly in the potting soil in a little pot and it is still not getting germinated
I find them almost impossible to root and I have green thumb..so to speak, lol..way too time consuming to wait 2 months & fail. Easier buy small ones at Lowe’s or HDepot, even WalMart sells small 4” size..
I will start this today! Perfect timing too. I have a container outside now using the Winter Sowing method. But will differentially do this today! Love all of your videos. How are you loving this warm winter we are having here in MD? Had a kick start on direct sowing this week.
I’m so glad I saw this and will definitely be trying it out… I’ve just moved to an island on the equator with 30 precious lavender seeds so need to get this right 🙏✨🌈💜
Thanks so much for this Siloe. I used your method and had hugely successful germination too, and my plants did terrifically well. I'm starting more this year and am excited to have found your video again and will follow!!! Many thanks!
Wow, such beautiful and strong plants. I'm amazed!
Thanks!
I know this is an old video but I wanted you to know that your process worked like a charm. I'm only at the point where I've taken my 2 baggies from the fridge (one is blue lavender, and one is pick lavender) and placed them in a warm, sunny window for germination. I'm at about day 6 in front of the window, and about 50% of the pink Lavender has already germinated. I see a few of the blue Lavender (Munstead) has germinated, but it's still pretty far behind the pink. I have many days to go yet, but I'm very encouraged! Thanks for the video!
Nice to hear that. Sometimes you also get bad batches of seeds, so if one of them germinates less, that could be it
@@suburbanhomestead Thanks for your reply! That's disappointing to learn. You'd think there'd be some form of quality assurance in the seed industry, but I guess not. Is it worth it to plant the seeds if after another week they haven't shown signs of germination, or is that just a waste of materials? Thanks again!
I tried this method and it really did improve germination rates. Hopefully my seedlings will continue to grow well. Thanks for the tip!
Great to hear!
Thank you! Many of the other methods for germinating lavender seeds don't mention taking them out of the refrigerator after the 30-40 days. I was about ready to thrown the seeds out since there wasn't any growth. But now I've taken them out of the fridge and put them in a sunny spot. Here's hoping they sprout!
@@SS-lr6kz just don’t leave then in direct sunlight while they are still in bag as that can cook them. As soon as they show signs of sprouting, transfer then to soil.
@@suburbanhomestead Around 30 days in the refrigerator, and only 1 day out and they're sprouting! Amazing!
I'm thrilled that I found your video!!! First time I watched it was April 27, I did what you said and today I have my plate of sprouted lavender seeds sitting by window, I was just checking back to see how long before I put them in soil.☺️☺️☺️
Great to hear that it was very useful to you. Make sure to transplant them to soil as soon as you can. You don't want the seedling to stretch.
@@siloeolive thank you ☺️ I love all of your videos and garden tips, your gardens are beautiful.
Best video I found on lavender thanks a lot I'm struggling growing it now I know what I got to do try twice nothing I'm going to do that stratified and then with your plate message thanks buddy 😁😁😁😁😁
I later found out that 2 weeks in the refrigerator is usually enough, and remember that after taking the plate in the bag from the fridge, leave it at room temperature for at least a week near bright light, but out of direct sun, because you don’t want the seedling cooking or drying up inside the plastic.
Great video. One question: when you put the seeds out of the fridge, do you leave the bag closed or slightly open?
Leave it shut so it does not dry out.
Great tutorial on lavender. I was hoping to find out how to save and use the seeds from existing plants, however. Will have to do more research on that.
Wow I have been trying to grow lavender for years with no success.Thank you so much am going to try your method.
Traditional method only gave me 2 out of 20 seedlings. Gonna try this method now at 7 days stratification! Thanks!!!!!
Well done. Thanks so much for sharing. We're trying lavender in our entrance and would love the scent and beauty to welcome all our parents. Also, love the way you put this together!
I think I got my bokeh quota for the month. Great to hear your lovely voice again, my friend. I had to make myself a new transplant tool out of old copper wire- the old one became a kid's toy and is lost somewhere in the house. I look forward to following this advice to fill our garden with lovely lavender someday. Thank!
You are welcome. I'm your local purveyor of bokeh. Just remember not to overdose :-)
I am trying this now, like the exact method on a wet paper towel with bag and plate i think this will make it easy to have them individually potted than mass planting . Im so excited to see results !
to germinate them. now i will try. i'll keep you informed how successful i am. thanks again
thank you for making this video. i have seeds and have
Love this video amazing Thank you so much One question How often do you have to put water once the seeds or on the cups ?
I just collected one ounce of pure Lavender seeds and it's time to start a farm
I live in Pittsburgh PA and I have had excellent germination with the "winter sowing" method with-in outdoor milk jugs. Leave the jugs out in the elements - no cap. I left mine between my own and neighbors house. I brought indoors once I saw two or three sprouted seedlings, and placed under a grow light. And every seed on surface of that soil soon after germinated and rooted deep. I just thinned them out since I don't need 150 seedlings to transplant and raise.
This worked! Nearly 100% germination rate. Thank you.
awesome. Great to hear that
It totally worked❤️. Thank you, thank you, thank you. In total it took 5 weeks. 4 in the fridge, 1 week on the window sill.
Glad it helped!
How long from planting in dirt before they were ready to transplant outside? Also, how long did you leave them in the refrigerator? I've read a few comments where people only left them for a week and still got germinating seeds
Thanks. I placed 3 different wet papers with seeds in the fridge. One paper, I took out after 3 days and the seeds germinated in about 2 days, another one I left it in the fridge 7 days and the same, all good. For the third paper I planned to leave it in the fridge one month but the seeds germinated in the fridge after 1 week and a half:)). I took them out...I have more than 100 seedlings from heirloom seeds.
Thank you for this information. You were being very scientific. I like that! I think your seed was very fresh. Did you buy it from a store/packet or did you collect it from plants?
suburban homestead I work in the field of clinical trials, hence my approach. I bought them from a local farmer who has an amazing Bio raised bed garden and they are fresh, as you supposed. You can check it at least for the pics (is in Romanian) gardenbio.ro/
That is awesome. I think the fresher the seed, the better germination you have. I'm glad you got so many germinated. you can start your own farm now.
This video is so helpful, i did the same but like in a cup full of soil, let it sit in the fridge for 30 days just took it out a week ago and i have lavender sprouts !
Will try this next yer with white lavender seeds.my dream flower.
FYI I've been working on growing lavender for a while now. I began with seed cells to no avale. I then took my next set and done the paper towel method BUT I used a peroxide and water solution! All but one are sprouting and it's only been days!
Could you elaborate on the solution? Amounts?
Hi! How much peroxide did you use? Peroxide: water
Glad I watched this
I just soaked my in a bowl of warm water. Within a week I can already see sprouts. I’ve learnt soaking longer helps.
As always a great informative video, Thanks Siloe'
I grew really healthy lavender plants from seeds using this method, because I’d seen it on TV once. Apparently, it works!
How wonderful of you to share this ! Thank you !
great video straight to vital info and so succinct .. Let me see if it works for me
Thank you!I am the first time growing lavender from seeds.I heard it's low Germination rate. With your secret,I think I'll have it germinate.
Thank you!I am the first time growing lavender from seeds.I heard it's low Germination rate. With your secret,I think I'll have it germinate.
I have lavender angustifolia from 2007, after I watch your video, I tried three ways, one direct on soil, the 2nd in perlite , the third in perlite then I put in the fridge , within 5 days both the one in soil and the one in perlite started to germinate, the one in the fridge I plan to dry it and recollect the seeds because I have too much seedlings.
Thank you for this video, now I know why I have never been able to germinate lavender seeds in the past.
Thanks for this video. I tried 2 years and now at it again. I've geminated comfrey so i should get this right eventually. I didn't know you had to stratification method for them. That could explain it. Thanks
Thank you for sharing. Great information about placing the seeds in the cold for 30 days. I will try and hope for success.
Some people in the comments had success with 1 week only. You may want to try that also
Hello! I have them in the fridge now and I am not in any rush. I have so many plants and vegetables I am trying to grow. Thank you!
nice content. I like how you educate us. keep on going with your videos. 😊
Im going to try this today!
🙂
It would have been great to watch this video before what I did with my lavender seeds...
I used a different method by put them in a terra cotta pot with soil and water, then I covered them with plastic. But it didn't work...the soil had started to smell bad, and the seed never germinated by this method.
But now that I watched your video, I'm gonna try it next week with new lavender seeds! So, thank you for all your tips!!
Thank you for this! Everywhere else I've read to keep the seeds somewhere 'very hot' and I haven't had any success so far! Can't wait to try putting them in the fridge instead.
Great growing advice. I’m going to check if any of my other seeds require stratification. Also enjoyed the retro B&W movie shots. “Requiem for Weed” poignant title. Very pleasant. 🌱
Just popped some seeds into the fridge, will report back in a week! o7
Update 1: Took it out of the fridge after 8 days. Pinned it on my windowsill, hoping that the sunlight that would hit it in the morning and afternoon would wake it up (5/13 - 5/21)
Update 2: 5/23, none have germinated. It's also been really cool and cloudy around here so that's probably the reason.
Going to just sow them into dirt and see how it goes. (19 seeds)
Meanwhile, I'll just pop in another batch of seeds (47) into the fridge until June 22nd or July 2nd
Thanks! Pls keep updating! I kept mine in the fridge for 12 days. Then out in a bright spot (gets direct sun for few hrs). Hopefully atleast 2 germinate in a week.
how did it go?
i know its been 2 years but I'm curious
Thanks. I am going to try this! (from UK) :))
I was searching this essential video for couple of days... Finally i got it and did it today with your instruction. Hope for the best result. I am facing a problem with Carnation Margarita Flower seeds. These seeds take long time to germinate but i couldn’t make it as a healthy flower tree. Before doing that it died in a tiny condition. So, I need a direction like what time is the best to try for germinate of this flower seeds and how to do it. What kind of weather it likes most. Before that i ensure you, My country is Bangladesh and the weather is temperate. Please answer my questions... May Allah bless you
Thank you so much. I had my heart set on lavendar this season only got one to germinate
I have had great luck with vera and munstead lavender by using a 70% sand 30% dirt or potting soil mix. I just put the seeds on top and leave them outside in pots or put the seeds out in the pots in early to late January. I have had pretty much every seed germinate. I live in zone 6
Great video. Thank you so much. Will be potting my germinated seedlings today.
Love it
I tried every possible method, but nothing worked. After watching this video, I tried and it germinated in a month. Thank you so much.
I took your advice about the wet paper towel in the fridge technique and had AMAZING results so far! Actually, the results were so impressive that the seeds starting sprouting on day 3 of being exposed to sunlight! So thanks so much for this video! I want as big of a yield as possible so I’m going to take out the sprouted seeds that are starting to crowd the others and give the rest of them more time to germinate. I have a couple questions though..1. Did you use regular potting soil when transplanting the sprouted seeds into cups? And if not, what did you use. I have heard mixed reviews on this and you’ve given good advice so far so I figured it was worth asking! And 2. This may sound silly but, which direction should the sprouts be put into the soil? The side the seed is attached too or the root side? My gut is telling me root side down but lavender is notoriously difficult for me to grow but I’m going to keep trying! Thanks again for the great video! 👍🏻
I'm happy to hear that. Yes, the root goes down. (try to leave any green leaves (if any have broken through) just poking from the surface. I used a regular very well draining potting mix, but if you want to get technical they prefer soil ph to be neutral to slightly acidic 6.5-7.3 so peat without lime to counterbalance it would be too acidic.
Will do! Thanks sooo much for getting back to me so quickly ! I really learned a lot from your videos!🙏🏻
Wow! I just found your channel through this video. Awsome find. Thanks for the information.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, I have always wanted lavender in my garden! I´ll try it out! Cheers!
I hope it works well for you
Siloe I love your videos. Thank you.
I've tried growing lavender from seed several times and failed. I can't remember if I've tried stratifying them first. I use that method on a few other things. Maybe I'll give it another try.
Gapeys Grub did it work?
Thanks. Doing the plate method right now.
Your plants look beautiful and healthy! I have to try this method, thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Try it out
Im a beginner at gardening and last few weeks I got my first Lavender seeds. I live in Malaysia and bare with me. Prior purchasing Lavender seeds, I did my research on the tube on how to best growing them, then the seeds came. I couldn't wait and decided to put 5 seeds of English lavender straight to a container full of non stater mix! yes, mix of garden soil coco peat and whatever. The kind of soil that 'gardener' wouldn't recommended for seedling. Water them just about right and keep them indoors for 2 days andon the third day let them naturally outside (not under the sun, under a roof). after 5 days, 1 got successfully germinated/growing like showing tiny pair of leaves, then another one. out of 5 I got 3. So Im happy. But non of my Spanish Lavender Seeds coming out (yet, Ill report back.. maybe they have died of take a very long time). I need an advice on how to grow Lavender where theres no winter fall spring and shit. Just Hot and humid. Anyone?
I was given a lavender growth kid as a gift and was wondering why only 4 of the 25 seeds had popped out. Now I know.
All of your videos are masterpieces!
Awesome!!! And this is why I study before growing
Omg. I so needed this video!
Makes sense. Curious if the fern leaf variety (outdoors zone 9b coastal FL) must also under cold stratification? Let me know if you do. Great vid. Keep up great work.
