Thats a complete blanket statement. Both have their day in the sun. I can honestly say in 15+ years ive had more procution customers get you in and then try to conviently add this or that like its not big deal. You’re already there kinda thing. You give them upcharge and they look at you like you just ran over their dog.
I can also say that in 15+ years of self employment contracting you can count on one hand how many times ive had to do something more than once by request wether its new, remodel, or redo.
You made the statement a couple times that really stood out to me why you avoid those jobs. You are more worried about the money than doing the job right the first time. Mom and pop dont stare over your should where as custom and commercial do.
I dont know you and im not going to judge your work. I’ll just say in 4-5 vids i’ve watched, you have made it very clear to me at least, money is your number one concern. Personally i worry about doing the job to the best of my abilaties and the money takes care of itself. I will and have happily given up $500 on a job because i know they will call me again, along with friends, family, and neighbors. Yeah i lost $500, but i made 10k on the two neighbors and sister.
You also know that there are jobs that you will make $15-20 per hour, and follow it with a job you make $250 per hour. Like i said. Focus alittle more on quality work and the money will take care of itself.

You absolutely correct but I would add you also need to run the numbers and decide if after 2/3 jobs for someone if they are worth your time. I have had clients that start out good and slowly become too demanding. As if friendship equals work for free!

I AGREE. I'M A CUSTOM PAINTER IN SW FLORIDA AND ONLY COMPETE AGAINST PRODUCTION PAINTERS. ODDLY, NOBODY HERE KNOWS HOW TO COMPETE ON ANYTHING BUT PRICE. THERE IS A CEILING THAT PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO PAY. WE’RE ABOUT 25% MORE EXPENSIVE, MOST OF WHICH I SPEND ON A GOOD PRIMER, WITH SW EMERALD AS THE TOP COAT. WE TAKE 2 WEEKS TO DO WHAT A PRODUCTION PAINTER DOES IN 3-4 DAYS. I'VE DONE THE MATH AND I KNOW THE PRODUCTION GUYS MAKE WAY MORE. BUT I HAVE BEEN CONSISTENTLY BOOKED OUT 6+ MONTHS FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS, AND RARELY LEAVE 3 SUB-DIVISIONS. MY CUSTOMERS ARE TYPICALLY 65 TO 75 Y/O, AFFLUENT, AND WANT IT DONE OLD SCHOOL, NOT SOMEONE SPRAYING THEIR HOUSE IN A DAY. I CLOSE ABOUT 80% OF MY PROPOSALS. FROM TIME TO TIME I THINK ABOUT TAKING SHORT CUTS, BUT I LIKE MY PLACE IN THE FOOD CHAIN. MY CUSTOMERS ALL LOVE ME AND I LOVE THEM. I DO NOT ADVERTISE - EVERYTHING IS REFERRAL. I ONLY DO EXTERIOR REPAINTS AND RARELY DO INTERIOR PAINTING. I HAVE A 2 YEAR LABOR WARRANTY ON TOP OF THE LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY FOR THE PAINT, BUT HAVE ONLY HAD 1 CALL BACK IN 6 YEARS FOR SOMETHING THAT TOOK 20 MINUTES TO FIX. I CAN’T SPEND THE PRIDE WE HAVE IN OUR WORK, BUT I KNOW THAT WHEN THE ECONOMY TAKES THE INEVITABLE DOWNTURN, WE’LL STILL BE BUSY. THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE MIKE.

In florida that might be the best market. I would be very selective on choosing my customer and charge the ones you work for to make a fair profit. Choose your customer not let them choose you. If they are assholes tell them your busy then do the ones that pay better. You can still choose your work in the market you are working in.

FYI keep this in mind my buddies that do high end custom only were out of work in 2008 and 2009. everything dropped off. there is no security in anything other than work that is busy in a down market. I made more money in 2008 and 2009 than I didn int he previous 5 years. Keep watching some of the stuff I teach can help even the high end painters. I do some very high end work for high net worth people too but I charge not 25% more I charge double and I get it. Being busy every day can be a bad thing. I work 5 days a month sometimes and make more than guys who work all month. then you have time to focus on getting the better work, and having fun.

I totally agree with you, I do project homes at a low square meter rate and I finish them quickly within 3 days, on the custom homes it can take up to12 days at only double the money ??

I work as a machinist fulltime, paint as a side hustle. I paint for a couple real estate agents that flip houses and try to bust them out fast with 1 other guy. I make more painting then my fulltime job, would love to do it fulltime. It's just hard with having kids and trying to get health insurance. I make a killing in production type work I can't believe what the hourly rate comes out to be.
